This place used to be a decent place to go to for some asian cuisine and some drinks. Right now if it wasn't for the live music it wouldnt be worth going. I prefer to get my food elsewhere. Its dark and the decors definitely dated... I dont know what happened and why it went downhill. Its truly sad.
Review Source:Had lunch and was not impressed. No ambiance...dark, dingy, dated. Could really use a makeover. Bathroom is tricky to get into and out of and seems way to small for size of establishment. As for the food...nothing special. Shrimp in my dish was tough and tasteless. This place could use an update across the board.
Review Source:Had a http://restaurant.com coupon, ordered some takeout, Coupon stated that I only needed to spend a certain amount ($15.00.), nothing about dining in. I got to the restaurant and was told coupon was only good for dining in. After much deliberation, I offered to include an 18% gratuity, even though I was not sitting down to eat, The seating lady called her boss, wanting to charge me the full amount, I informed her that this was not fair, and she could eat the food herself, I was not about to be bullied into paying full price, we deliberated 5 minutes over a small discount. Why offer a coupon?, if your not going to honor it? Food is 70's style chinese food at best. Mediocore food I can deal with, just don't try to screw me. An embarrassing moment for all involved. If you can't trust the front of the house, should you trust the back???
Review Source:My first impression regarding the place was not good because the place is so tasteless with funny lights, insufficient illumination and the ambiance. We went there for a jazz concert. Before the concert, we had chinese food which was not very special, only two stars. The service was terrible. Despite that, the music was very good. There are two salons at the restaurant and it is funny to hear the karaoke singing coming from the other saloon when the group stops between the songs. Â Therefore it is not easy to rate the place, for the particular performance I would give 4 stars, the singer, the vocalist and the band were very talented and I liked the music very much. But I would never go to Woonsocket from Providence to have chinese food.
Review Source:This is a Rhode Island institution. Â Most noted for it's live entertainment, especially jazz and blues. Â Heard about this place 25 yrs ago, and finally stopped in for a Sunday night dinner. Â Not very crowded, but this wasn't a night where there was live entertainment. Â Decor is typical Asian, with some cool blues artwork mixed in. Â
We got some of their dinner combo plates. Â My first observation of the dinner plates was the lack of interesting combinations. Â Seemed like you could choose rice and appetizers, lo mein & apps, or chow mein and apps. Â I would've liked some sort of entree dish (like kung pao chicken or beef with broccoli) with rice and one or two apps. Â Portions were good sized, food wasn't bad, and the prices were reasonable. Â
I wouldn't make a special trip there, but overall not a bad place.
This place is a DUMP. The food is so disgusting that I did not even finish any of it. The food was covered in MSG/soy sauce and Ginger. The only reason I know to use so much Ginger and MSG would be to hide the flavor of bad meat. We did not even make it home before I started to get sick from the food. Avoid if possible.
Review Source:I recently started a job in Woonsocket and was excited to see that Chan's was so close, after hearing about it for so long. Â I'd heard their jazz club was fantastic and the food was great. Â Well, I still haven't been to a show, sadly and, even more sadly, I'm sorry to say that the food I've had from there was pretty bad.
I love Asian food. Â Even 'bad' Asian food (i.e. Americanized stuff like crab rangoons, etc.). Â But this was bad-bad.
I've called in orders several times, hoping that another chance will redeem them, but after the last order, I'm done. Â The wonton soup had always been pretty good. Â The spring rolls were fine. Â The fried shrimp were huge and promising, but doughy, drenched in oil and flavorless in actuality. This last time, I thought I'd order a few things for lunch and take the leftovers home for dinner. Â None of them made it past the trash can.
Walking into the restaurant, there is an odd, almost overpowering smell of what seems to be a mixture of mildew and gas. Â Not pleasant, to say the least. Â The last time I went in, I had to wait for quite some time and couldn't wait to get out once I had my food. Â I knew the food had been hit or miss (mostly miss) before, but I thought ordering super easy staples like veggie noodles, wonton soup and chicken & broccoli would up the chance of satisfaction. Â I mean, how can you go wrong with those?
Well... the noodles were tough and like rubberbands. I'd had them before and they were fine, but on this day, they clumped together and were flavorless. Â Then I got to the chicken and broccoli and the wonton soup, which had chicken in it. Â Big florets of broccoli, lovely white chicken breast-- it looked and smelled great! Â One mouthful told me otherwise. Â
To say the chicken was rubbery wouldn't come close to describing the travesty I had in my mouth. Â IT SQUEAKED WHEN I TRIED TO CHEW IT. Â No, I don't mean that it came alive and clucked or anything, but it squeaked as if I were chewing on a rubber bouncy ball. Â I have never in my life experienced this sensation and I'd be happy never experiencing it again. Â I almost screamed. Â I threw away the noodles after a few bites and then the chicken & broc after picking out some of the broccoli. Â I then moved on to what I thought would be the one tried-and-true staple, the wonton soup. Â The broth and veggies were good, but one bite of that chicken and SQUEAK!!!!! Â No thank you. Â Into the garbage it went.
For the rest of the day, my stomach rumbled and tossed. Â NEVER AGAIN. Â It's too bad, because I really wanted to like it and it was great having it within walking distance. Â The drivethru in back also seems really convenient... but not worth squeaky chicken.
I've heard so much about Chan's before ever stepping a foot onto Woonsocket soil, that I was totally psyched out to try their food. Â Sadly it took two tries to actually get the opportunity (on the first, I was told of a different closing time than what they actually closed at: either that or they just didn't answer the phone).
I gave their delivery service a try one random weeknight ordering the beef ho fun and the chicken wings for Charlie. Â Total cost was over $22 bucks and they took nearly an hour and a half to actually reach our dining table.
The beef ho fun was actually -really- good although they kinda skimped on the beef a bit. Â The chicken wings were pretty tasty as well. Â Still though, nearly twenty-four big ones for wings and ho fun (which is one of those dishes that is usually $5 at hole in the walls) is a little concerning. Â I suppose that the ambiance of dining in may make up for it, but as a business, this same quality should translate in their other services (ie, delivery). Â Either that or amp up the beef!
Overall, it's uncertain if we'd order from here again: I certainly wouldn't mind more of those delicious noodles but seriously folks, us Asians so know it shouldn't be that pricey. Â 'Didn't blow me away quite enough to pay up when there are plenty of other options around.
The Servers are old - and seem quite miserable. The food is mediocre. And Refills are not free which is disgusting to me. The Restaurant is also dirty. This place is a woonsocket staple due to its Jazz roots but it is little more than a crappy chinesse restaurant. You be better served to go to Ho Kongs, The only tiki style chinesse restaurant in RI. Serves good food, and Great drinks.
Review Source:Probably the worst Chinese food I have ever had, and I've had alot.
The sesame chicken was a glob of undercooked chicken. The chk fried rice was tasteless unless your drowned it with soy sauce. The chk fingers were so undercooked and under fried that the batter was barely hanging on.
The crab Rangoon was so/so. The only thing that was bearable was the white
Rice. But how can you screw that up?
Never Going there again. Wonder how it's still in business.
Food was overly salty. Â Not tasty at all. Â The fried rice was drenched in Soy Sauce...could not taste the rice nor the other ingredients. Â Â Chicken dish was overcooked, horrible. Â Â
I cook Chinese and it is not difficult to make nice tardy dishes. Â Â What a disgrace !
What really bothers me is how the owner can run a business like this after all these mediocre reviews and still continue running the place without any improvement nor care. Â Â That does not say much about him.
Went here with a friend last night---first time for both of us, but we went based on several good recommendations.
As previous reviews have said, the service is very, very slow, despite going on a weekday evening and there being hardly anyone else in the restaurant. However, our waitress was very sweet when she did show up.
The egg rolls were basic, but not bad. The sesame chicken was disgusting---so much breading and sugary goop that it was like eating a chicken-stuffed glazed donut, and not a hint of spice, despite the menu saying it was spicy. The fried rice was greasy and almost black and yet lacking flavor.
My friend got vegetable lo mein and wonton soup. I sampled her soup and it was pretty bland. She said it was the first time she's ever had to salt Chinese food, so make of that what you will.
Very disappointed with the overpriced buffet. I always order off the menu, but decided to leap without looking. Â Stay away, far away from the Buffet. Â No chicken fingers, no teriyaki, no duck sauce, no egg rolls, general tao's was sludgy. Â There was also salad as a choice. Â It was very dry and overall tired looking. Â There was also a sold out Jazz show tonight and you would think a lot more attention would be given to the quality and choices in the buffet. Â Lastly, $12 per person for a substandard buffet was the final insult when the bill came. Â The waitress we had was good and very attentive! Â I will go back but must warn anyone to stay away from the Buffet. Â I feel like a "sucker" after I grabbed the first plate. Â Buyers remorse
Review Source:Before an awesome blues show last week I enjoyed a filling meal of the spring roll appetizers and the ginger beef entrée over white rice, accompanied by a few bottles of domestic beer. My companions enjoyed a couple trips to the dinner buffet and had no complaints. Service was polite, though hard to come by on a busy night, and while the food was far from gourmet (my entrée was served on a bed of wilting iceberg lettuce and the ginger sauce had the all too familiar goopy quality that plagues many Asian restaurants of the West) I had no complaints about the flavor or the value of my value. 3 out of 5 stars are well earned.
Review Source:I have no idea about the band/performance room, this review is for the food.
I would NEVER eat here again, ever since my grandmother got 5 cigarette filters in her chop-suey when I was a kid! From what I can see from other people's reviews, is that they haven't changed much since then. If they were in Los Angeles, they would have gotten an 'C' rating and got shut down! They deserve to be closed down. I definitely don't recommend this place. Chan's is disgusting as all of my friends and family know all too well. AVOID 100%. If I could have given a NEGATIVE 5 stars i would have.
I usually hit up Ciro's when I'm in downtown Woonsocket, but a few weeks ago with my girlfriend and friend from out of town. I thought the staff was friendly, the food was typical Chinese-American, the inside was very...... flamboyant(?), and apparently Mr. Chan has had a ton of famous people roll through here. I guess there is live music on some night which is pretty sweet. It was as neutral an experience as there is, I would normally give it 3 stars.
In all respects, Mr. Chan should be a proud, secure man given that he is the owner of one of the few hot spots in Northern Rhode Island. Why is he such a boorish jerk? Why does he feel the need to yell at his employees in front of his customers (no, he isn't speaking Mandarin)? Why does he need to threaten to tow someone's car who was probably confused by the location of his parking lot? Why does he put up flimsy tape around the parking lot, knowing how windy New England is? Trouble at home or are you just angry Mr. Chan? Well if you ever need somebody to talk to, I'm here.
I don't usually write reviews unless I have something really good to say...but... I'm writing as I eat this awful, overpriced lunch. I ordered sesame chicken, you know... I thought it could be average....WRONG!!! its 4 large pieces of boiled chicken covered in nasty thick batter, sprinkled with sesame seeds and NO SAUCE!! dry, greasy, nasty. Fried rice is all gooey and salty. Egg roll is decent, at least I'll eat something! I can't believe I paid $10 for this! Ugh! They've been around for how long? 100 years? damn...someone please help them with the recipe book.
Review Source:We went here on a quiet, random weeknight. Â There weren't many people in the restaurant. Â
I have a lot of food allergies so Chinese restaurants can be dangerous. Â I always ask about ingredients - wherever I go - before I order anything because that's what you do if you want to avoid a trip to the emergency room or an injection of an Epipen in the restaurant. Â
I ordered something basic and my boyfriend ordered something else that he would have liked to share with me. Â When we asked the waitress if certain ingredients were in it, she snapped at us and said, as if quite put off by the question, that she didn't know. Â I clarified that the reason I was asking, is because I have severe food allergies. Â Again, she said she just didn't know what was in it. Â I finally had to ASK her to ask someone. Â This has never been a problem for me at any other restaurant - Chinese or not so I was kind of surprised (and a bit hesitant to eat what they served). Â
Eventually she did tell me that there was nothing it that I had allergies to and we ate. Â The food was decent - I've had better, I've had worse. Â But I would not go back because of the service. Â It would maybe be more understandable if it were a really busy night but there was absolutely no one in that restaurant besides us.
I'm sad to report that my experience at Chan's left a lot to be desired. From food that many of us ended up not eating, to service that left a lot to be desired. The rice, which is so basic, tasted like really bad tap water. And the severs were quickly overwhelmed. Unfortunate, especially because so many people said so many good things before.
Review Source:So I've been in the area over 10 years, and had tried Chang's once a long while ago, before the was a yelp. Was back this weekend to see Johnny A with my family and thought I'd post my thoughts.
Lets get past the good part- Â Johnny A was great, the music room is small and an intimate setting to see an act. If you want to hit this place up for music - especially a band you like - do it. BUT this is a restaurant review and so the ugly reality must be addressed instead.
To be real, the food was the most horrible Chinese food I've ever had. Slow service, heavy sauces, overcooked ingredients - just complete junk. For a place that's been there for over a 100 years as the owner proudly announced before the music stated, they should be ashamed of themselves for the terrible food. And pretty much everything we had was disliked from the apps (veg tempura, calamari, rangoons) to entrees including a fish dish, General GSOs (or GAUs I forget) chicken, and Orange beef.
Everything had bland flavor andor thick gooey nasty sauce drenched over it. To top this off, service was very slow, they got the one special order we asked for (leaving out mushrooms and water chestnuts) wrong - thankfully this was not an allergy issue, and they strangely brought out one appetizer at a time instead of all together.
So I would tell anyone to seriously think twice about even considering eating here, and to the owner say that your food is worse than a bad Chinese buffet, and it's a shame because it ruins what otherwise could be a great diningmusic venue. It's not that hard to make decent if not fancy food - why not put the effort in and show customers you actually care.
Strongly not recommended for dining.
By far some of the best Chinese food I have ever had, period. You gotta love a Chinese restaurant the has live jazz music playing in the background. WTF? are you saying right now, yes it is true live jazz music, lol. My favorite thing on the menu is their Chop Suey, prepared in any of their ways. I could eat there chop suey by the bowl full without thinking twice about it. Chan's offers the traditional American style of Chinese cuisine, but done the correct way. Unfortunately I live 3,000 miles away from this place now, but believe you me if I was still in that area, I would totally be there at least once a month!!
Review Source:The Best Place to see National Blue's Acts.
Small Club great sound, eat chinese food while you watch the show.
I Recently Saw Johnny A and he played for 3 hours straight, an awesome show.
Before that I say Paul Rishell and Annie Raines perform their new CD
A Night at Woodstock. Â Annie jumped up on a table and wailed on the Harmonica everyone was standing and clapping along.
Chan's "Fine" Oriental proves to be false advertising. I did not enjoy the decor, as it seemed as if a bomb shelter was filled up with cheesy looking oriental knickknacks. The menu had some good vegetarian selections and had plenty of traditional selections like sweet and sour chicken which my wife enjoys. That's where the good ends.
The service was HORRIBLE. I had to find my server, as after 10 minutes no one acknowledged my existence. I ordered ice water, which had to be returned twice due to an unclean glass (Hello - food safety!). I ordered a tofu vegetable dish, which by far was one of the worst things that I ever eat. Bland and soggy, I ate about a quarter of it. Do the cooks at Chan's know what spices are?
I know people love going to Chan's for the entertainment, but the food was just pathetic and awful. This is the place you'd bring someone that you no longer wanted to date. Save your time and money...there are far better Oriental restaurants in the Woonsocket/Blackstone Valley area (Fortune House in Cumberland, the Asia Grille in Lincoln, etc.)
Service was ok, food was not good at all. Â I went with a group of 4 and we all agree the food was horrible. Â Now I eat a lot of Chinese food and Asian food in general, I live down the street and would not order or think about eating here. Â I drive by sometimes, and wonder what everyone eat these days when they go to Chans for Jazz nights, :) . Â Take it from me, if you're looking for good Chinese food, this place isn't it.
Review Source:This is the place that you go to when you want to lose weight.
I use to go there when I was a kid and the food was ok. Â My aunt would take us there when the Autumnfest came to town. Â For some odd reason, it has gone downhill.
It reminds me of a place wher e the Nazi spies in Indiana Jones would go to have a secret meeting. Â I think they were going for retro...but they missed.
I order the boneless spareribs and the rice with a scorpion bowl. Â The meat was tough as leather, the rice was scooped out with an ice cream cone scoop and to top it all off; when I was finished with my drink I found an insect at the bottom of it. Â I told the server and she took the drink off my bill. Â Gee thanks alot sweetheart.
I wouldnt go back here again even if you gave me a lifetime coupon to eat there free
Born and raised in RI and never been to Chan's? Crazy. Â I went for the first time last Sunday to see my boyfriend's band play. I imagined it would be typical RI Chinese food, meaning white rolls and butter before your chow mein, but I was pleasantly surprised. I opted for the buffet and enjoyed the vegetable lo mein and scallion pancakes, while my sister-in-law chowed down on spare ribs, and my parents got drunk off the scorpion bowl. Â Cute place, friendly service, and good times. The only complaint we had was with my friend's mom's dessert: freezer burned ice cream. She had to use a knife on it! That's not right.
Review Source:I have no idea why I haven't been here before but now that I have I am so glad that I did! Â It is truly a Rhode Isalnd experience, no it is totally a Woonsocket experience. Â We were greeted at the door by the owner shown to a table in the most overly decorated Chinese room I've been in an years. Â Hanging on the wall over out table was a portrait of Myles Davis. Â We were handed menus and a drink list. Â The waitress was a nice chick from Woonsocket and honsetly said she didn't really know much about Chinese food but "people liked it." Â We ordered what we thought sounded good and it was! Â I had Beef with Tomatoes and hightly, highly reccomend it! Â Some local Jazz ban was playing loudly enough we could hear it without paying the cover and the lounge was filled with a great mix of customes that only Woonsocket could supply.
Afreak show and a great meal what more can on ask. Â Hmm come to think of it we may well have been part of the freak show. Â The best part is we were in Woonsocket on a Saturday night and parked DIRECTLY out front.
After reading the reviews here, I thought it would be a great idea for my girlfriend and I to go to Chan's first before adult fun later. I was really looking forward to some great Chinese food as we both have a passion for it. Â Found the place pretty easily from the directions on the site. Â Cute outside look to the building. Â We walked in and was met by the owner (he had a portrait of himself up in the foyer so I figured he's has to be the owner right?) and he asked us if we wanted lounge, dining room or jazz room. Â I wasn't sure so we opted for lounge. Â Very quiet in there. We were the only ones. Â I figured it was like that because it was almost 8? hmmmmmm.
They have this huge room inside the restaurant that is closed off with doors where they have live bands, jazz bands I think. Â It was packed in there and didn't think we needed that for the night but if you're into jazz, check it out. It's very popular locally I take it.
The decor...definitely was oriental in flavor and yes campy in areas. Â The walls were done in oriental colors and style. Â Very nice! Â But over the bar they had this paper dragon that was well...kiddie style...like the kind for a kids party. Â It just didn't go well with the decor. Â Weird......
We ordered mai tais and they were strong and yummy. Â Ordered a pu pu for 2 and crab rangoons, vegetable fried rice and vegetable lo mien as sides. Â It was hit or miss on the food. Â Spring roles were extremely good but the crab rangoons were not (I have had much better crab rangoons elsewhere). Â The fried rice was good, the lo mien was good but the pork was tough. Â The chicken fingers were good but the beef teriyaki was just ok...little tough but the sauce was fine. The chicken wings were the best.
I'm not sure if the trip here is worth another trip here. Â I can get better food locally so I think I'll pass, thanks. Â I tried to give it a 3 star, but it just didn't feel right but 2 doesn't either. Â Sooooo, 2 1/2 is the right one.
Went here just once this past weekend, and got VIP treatment from the very gracious host! Â
The establishment is well-maintained. Â The decor is impressively elaborate, albeit a bit campy in a retro-cool-ish way. Â (Among a few things, note the placemats decorated with the Chinese zodiak.) Â The walls near the entrance and in the hallway are covered with interesting photos and paintings. Â Be sure to check out the beautiful watercolor paintings in the hallway separating the main dining area and the banquet room.
The banquet room where the restaurant frequently hosts performances and gigs by renowned bands and musicians is colorful and festive. If I lived in the area, I'd be sure to check out the schedule regularly.
Conclusion: Chan's is not just a good place to eat, but truly seems to be a fun and romantic place for folks of all ages to enjoy great music and entertainment.
I have craved good Chinese food ever since I left Rhode Island --- I guess I should clarify what I mean by good. Â I'm talking about the type of Chinese food I grew up with. Â The kind that has pork fried rice without egg in it -- the kind that has crab Rangoon and appetizer platters.
Chan's has the best crab Rangoon, pork fried rice and General Tso's chicken in my neighborhood. Â Each trip back north requires a stop to this establishment --- oh yeah and who doesn't like scorpion bowls!!!
