Decided to take the wife and two kids out to lunch today, Coal Vines seemed like it would be a good experience. Â It was just that, good... Â not bad, not great... Â
The woman that greeted me was not extra friendly, just asked where we wanted to sit then off she went. Â Greeting someone is like the first impression, c'mon, get it right guys... Â Greeting - C+
We sat outside and waited until our male server finally came out and greeted us.. Â He was nice, nothing special... Â just nice... Â not extra nice, not friendly. Â Service B-
We waited a while for our server to come to our table, his visits were very cold and he seems to be ready to leave us and get someplace...
I don't know why, but from the time I walked in this place, I felt like I was getting on their nerves...
THE FOOD
The food was good, I ordered a pizza with Gorgonzola cheese and it was very yummy. Â My wife order a sandwich and really enjoyed her food as well. Â I would normally give a place with good food high markings, but the service was so sub par that I can't give anything here higher than B-
Typically shops at Legacy is above par, these guys have some growing to do and it's a shame since they have good food at decent prices.
Yawn, NEXT!!!
I ordered to-go for a work day meet up and was so pleased with how quickly my order was ready. I ordered a small pizza and spinach salad. The pizza was a mix of sausage, peppers, mushrooms and feta. I am a fan of Coal Vines in Uptown and this Legacy location is just as good.
Small restaurant front with generous patio seating. Great wine selection and mood lighting/music that would add fun to any date night or fun night out with friends.
Pizza tastes noticeably better than Fire side Pies (competitor around the corner). Service was fast and friendly. Prices are commensurate with with the size of pizza ( a large is really large) quality, service and ambiance. Noticed a good wine selection compared to competitors Mellow Mushroom and Fire side Pies.
More upscale than the others. Good place for a date and people watching.
Discovered this place after booking a lunch on the request of my manager. Â Never heard of a Coal Vines so I had to Google it. Â I was intrigued by the menu and gave it my first try in May of 2012 for a birthday HH and dinner.
They only serve wine so beer drinkers and those that prefer cocktails might be disappointed. Â
We ordered wine and were able to try several while deciding. Â The wine was really good and while I don't remember exactly what we ordered on this visit, it was all very good.
Since that fist experience I've been back several times for brunch. Â Cannot beat it. Â The food is excellent and the price is right. Â The mimosas aren't weak either. Â ;)
On the last brunch visit we got pizza to go, a Margarita and a BBQ Chicken. Â The BBG chicken was just meh...not my style, but I think it's just a preference thing.
I've always been greeted at the door and service is always friendly and fast. Â
I've had both sweet and savory dishes for brunch and all have been very, very good.
They have a semi private area in the back of the small space that is great for private parties. Â
Bathrooms are always fresh and clean.
I waited until after my 3rd visit to write a review. I guess the fact that I have been back twice in 2 weeks since my first visit is an indication. I like this place. I like the atmosphere and the pizza is about as good as I have found so far in North Dallas. Crust is very good. On my second visit, I had the meatballs in marinara sauce appetizer. It was basically my meal and it was delicious. This is becoming one of my favorite hangouts.
Review Source:This place is a joke compared to the one in uptown, which has a nice atmosphere and reliable/well mannered servers. I visited this location on the evening of Thursday, January the 3rd, despite my sisters previous warning of sub par service. Â After sitting momentarily, I ordered a glass of red wine. The server, a female (hope manger sees this and addresses this issue) asked for my I'd, as expected. I accidently handed her my debit card instead of my ID and she condescendlly replied "nope, dont need your bank card, Honey!" You should have seen my boyfriend's face.... oh buddy. The server then quickly poured me a glass of wine without ANY presentation, she didn't even offer I sip and try it. Had it not been that I caught a glimpse of the bottle as she turned to leave, I might not have seen that she did not pour me the correct wine I had ordered. So I immediately called her on it, i asked her what she poured me and why it was not what I had asked her for. She told me that they were out of the wine I ordered and this was similar and she was sure I would like it the same. I did not. And I sent it back. How scandalous! Later when my date and I ordered 2 pizzas, one gluten free and one regular- they were out of gluten free. I can live with that, those things happen. I ordered soup instead which was ok. Â I still can not get over our server and her lack of etiquette or propriety. Did they hire her off the streets??? As en extension of Nick and Sams and after the wonderful service we've experienced in uptown, this visit was unacceptable. Will not be returning, ever. Should have taken my sisters advice from the start... Ya live and learn, I guess
Anyone considering visiting coalvines, hit your "trend" option at the top of the ratings section--- apparently the average rating is 2 stars for the last year, enough said.
tl;dr version: Not vegetarian friendly.
I've been to Coal Vines twice. The first time was with a large party of ladies for an evening social gathering over appetizers and drinks. The waiter we had was friendly and attentive. I arrived late and being a vegetarian, the girls thought ahead had already ordered a roasted pepper appetizer pizza for the table. I ate a slice and it was pretty tasty, even though I don't care for peppers. At one point we had a round of shots that I believe were called Lemon Drops and they were very tasty.
A couple of nights ago I decided to return with another vegetarian friend to get the full experience of the place. It was fairly empty as we arrived well before prime time at the Shops and we were seated quickly. I decided to ask whether their soup of the day happened to be vegetarian and she told me it wasn't. What surprised me was that she also informed me that none of their pizzas are vegetarian as they brush all of the crusts with prosciutto oil. She said they make their crusts in advance and that that making us a pizza brushed with olive oil instead wouldn't be possible. She was very friendly and informative, but we decided to take our business over to Gordon Biersch across the way (which by the way has a full vegetarian menu available upon request).
I gave the place three stars based on the friendliness of the staff and the fact that I can't really speak one way or another to the quality of the food. It's incredibly disappointing that there are no veggie options however, particularly since pizza is so easy to do on a vegetarian diet. For good pizza I'll be sticking to Cane Rosso's, Olivella's, or a big floppy slice at Greenville Avenue Pizza at 1am.
I couldn't love a pizza place more. This is my own personal 'Cheers.' I work in the Shops right by it (and 8 other food options) & eat here 3 days a week. I get a different pizza almost every time. The crust is the only kind I like - super thin and crunchy. And the toppings are cooked perfectly into the pizza so that they don't fall off, unlike other places nearby. I am obsessed with the romaine hearts salad and the lemon vinaigrette. It's a great compliment to a slightly greasy pizza. I've branched out to the pastas and I actually crave them now.
The bartender knows my order before I sit down at this point. They're so accommodating above & beyond what I deserve. I appreciate it as a thank you for loyal patronage. Every employee is so great.
I don't like the white special. Too much goat cheese. And I don't like the salmon app. Too much cream cheese. But that is just personal opinion and reflects nothing on the restaurant.
You know the pizza is good when you find yourself thinking about the pizza days and days later. I think they have one of the best pies in the Dallas area. I also love the atmosphere at the Plano location - since I can hear my lunch companions as opposed to background noise. The service is excellent too.
Review Source:This was my first time to eat at Coal Vines and we sat at the bar. We were greeted by a polite woman, but after that it was all downhill. We were handed a dirty menu, ordered our wine, and after that were ignored for almost 15 minutes. I was super hungry so I finally asked another worker that happened to be behind the bar if we could order. She called over another bartender and the woman literally rushed over and when we asked if we could order she simply said "ok!" then looked at us with attitude like we were inconveniencing her. My sister ordered a small pizza and the bartender sighed out loud, and asked "have you eaten here before? The pizzas are to share" in a condescending tone. It was very strange. I ordered the baby spinach salad, which was heavily dressed in a creamy, almost mayonnaise consistency type of dressing. Gross. As my entree I ordered the baked eggplant, which wasn't bad. Throughout the entire night it was hands down worst service I have ever had. I had to flag down a bartender to order another glass of wine. They never offered or even glanced our way. Fireside has way better food and service. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars is because of the relaxed ambiance and other patrons, who made the experience more fun.
Review Source:I'm usually generous but if I can vote half a star or no star at all, I would have done so for Coal Vines. I've only been to Coal Vines for dinner and the atmosphere was great reminding me of something off of the Lower East side restaurants in NYC. They were busy so we practiced patience from the greeting to getting sat but my experience here was shattered the moment I was given a glass of wine that was fresh of the hot stove and they poured a Cakebread Cellar Cabernet. I was unaware how hot my glass was because my husband did the tasting for the bottle. I was last served and did not realize it because I touched my glass after I Â let the wine breathe for a minute. The bottle of Cakebread Cab was not cheap and it was one of my favorite wineries when I visited Napa. I think for us to consider this a wine bar has lost me in the concept that they pay less attention to serving wine and not being able to keep up with the tempo of the guests coming in. They should just call it "Pizza" and leave the wine bar to stop the misrepresentation. We told the server about the hot wine glass but he took too long to get our orders out and I was left with a 4oz wasted dirt wine while the rest of my compadres enjoyed the cab I recommended for us to order. Â I was so blinded in thinking they were awesome because they carried a decent selection in Joe's Private cellar with our fave blend Cinq Cepages. I thought, wow, they know what they're talking about in wine but NO. Â I live nearby this place and I have not stepped in to Coal Vines nor have I recommended the place due to the service I received. Maybe I whined about the wine but paying over $135 for a bottle of Cakebread was a little ostentatious with the intention that we really wanted to give Coal Vines a splurge expecting greatness and wanted to support their local business.
Review Source:I've been here several times for brunch and liked it. Â Once for dinner before and it was fine. Â I like the atmosphere, think the place is pretty, find the staff to generally be friendly/nice - with some exceptions. Â Last night, however, I had some truly awful food. Â We started out with a Salmon Tartar appetizer. Â Sounded light for a hot summer evening. Â What we got was the ugliest pile of salmon, guacamole and cream cheese I've ever seen. Â Served with very delicate and breakable chips of some sort. Â I think they were attempting something southwestern, but it was a terrible, gelatinous mess. I really don't understand at all what they were attempting to do.
I followed that up with grilled shrimp and scallops spedini (on a skewer) served with mesculin greens. Â Again, sounded light and yummy. Â The shrimp and scallops were delivered to the table so charred that I could not get the taste out of my mouth for the rest of the night. Â It was inedible. Â The salad was fresh and tasty though. Â I nibbled on my husband salmon, which was fine, but didn't want to reorder because I didn't want to wait for another meal. Â In the end they gave us a 25% discount on my dish because of the burnt factor.
Oh, and they used to play old Sinatra and Dean Martin music. Â Last night they were playing Amy Winehouse and ColdPlay. Â I like both of these artists, but for this place I liked the old school atmosphere better.
If they had been wonderful most of the time and this was an outlier it might be one thing, but they are simply mediocre most of the time and this recent visit might be enough to keep me away...but considering the crowd that was there even on a Wednesday night, they are probably fine with that.
Good wine selection and I love their baby spinach salad. I get their basic pizza plus Basil and sometimes meatballs. Their crust is unbelievable. Bartender just added her own recipe of sangria. Its not full of sugar, just the perfect blend of sweet and slightly tart. The perfect refreshing drink for these summer temps!
Review Source:We had a party of 6 that ate at Coal Vines on 6/30/2012 - a very busy Saturday night. Â The review is very average because of the impact of very poor service on what was slightly above average food. Â Our waitress was very mediocre - managing to mess up simple items like refilling water glasses, setting out plates for appetizers, pouring wine, etc. Â We were there for a friend's birthday party and notified the waitress - after spending over $200 you would expect some sort of recognition. Â After dinner, everyone decided on the Heath bar cheesecake. Â 15 minutes later we flag down the waitress to ask about our desserts. Â She informs us that the cheesecake was still frozen, and it was taking a while to thaw out! Â This was still early in the night as well.
The appetizers were excellent, the pizza slightly above average, and the service incredibly disappointing.
Like the general pizza + wine concept in a cozy environment. Â We dined here for a surprise birthday party and ordered a variety of pizzas, appetizers (calamari was our favorite), and had to get a salad to even out the healthy/unhealthy. Â Wine wasn't too bad and the sangria was pretty average. Â I'd have to say that the tomato/cucumber salad and the calamari was the top 2 dishes of the night.
But one complaint during my visit: Â Restaurant does not take reservations (even though Yelp lists them as taking reservations). Â So I arrive early to wait on a table for our party of 13. Â Hostess communicates that she will ready 2 open tables for us. Â However, when the tables were set, she stated only 1 table would be given to us as they needed the other table for a separate party. Â Just wasn't a fan of the bait & switch.
Overall takeaway: Â not great for larger parties but good for dates and double dates, average pizza, a bit pricey, cozy space but a bit too tight for volume of business they're trying to do, inattentive service/hostess. Â If it's crowded, unfortunately, you'll end up waiting outside in the heat.
I have tried all their appetizers and salads and have yet to find one that is at all satisfying. Â For good apps and salads go to Fireside Pies next door, they knock those out of the park.
But what I am giving 4 stars for is their pizza, it is great.  The white special is fantastic.  I have tried almost all of them and they are all great.  The atmosphere is good, small and intimate.  And we have always had good service, minus the one time we sat outside on the patio and not one person came to wait on us until the manager did himself.  Great wines and good happy hour specials if  you can make it in time.
Well, let me start by saying the food and servers are fantastic. I am giving this place a low star rating because of one person. I had booked my sons 18th Birthday here this week and was told it would be fine and all taken care of.. I had spoken to the general manager who was great and so helpful. Well our group was about 19 people. That night ( Which was a Friday) the manager on duty...ALBERTO...was not so nice. Almost as soon as we came in he kept asking when would we be leaving. Ummm...I dont know yet..and then he said you need to have your whole party here NOW!! I was so embarressed. He really was not wanting us to be there. He wanted to turn the table so badly . So we finally finished at about 8 pm after being there maybe 1 1/2  hours . When we finished  they  had so many open tables. What Ever..Alberto... learn from your staff how to treat customers. They were way better than you. If this was my restuarant you would not be here long.
Review Source:Good atmosphere, average food at best.
New place at the Shoppes of Legacy so we thought we'd try it. I'll save the details and cut to the chase. The appetizers tasted like we were at Friday's... Yes we went there once, which is as many times as we will have ever been to Coal Vines. The nuts in the spinach salad stuck to our teeth. And the pizza at any corner pizzaria is as good as if not better. The atmosphere was cozy, but not warm. We sat two tables away from the door and all felt the blast of cold air every time someone came or left. Disappointed.
After raving over Dallas' location a friend and I went to Plano in hopes for the spicy chicken pizza. Needless to say, Plano didn't have it but the waiter made up for it with his personality. Â He made no excuses about the menu and just went on about what was good. Â Great pizzas, salad, wine and service!
Review Source:I was so excited when they opened a Coal Vines up north. I had fallen in love with the one in Dallas, and was very sad to move north. Now that there is a Coal Vines within the 10 miles radius from our home, I could not be any happier. I have been a couple of times since it has opened and it has not disappointed at all. Love the WHITE PIZZA!! Â A MUST HAVE!!
Review Source:A friend and I had dinner here the other night and it was such a graceful evening. Â We shared a large Coal Vines regular pizza with pepperoni added. Â The pizza was one of the best I've ever eaten! Â We also shared a bottle of Malbec at the bar after dinner to continue our girl talk in the perfectly dimmed restaurant. Â The ambiance is superb and the staff will make you feel right at home. Â I know that I can have many more good nights here and am looking forward to it.
Review Source:First let me say, this review is location specific. I have been a HUGE fan of Coal Vines since my very first experience about 5 years ago at the original location off Fairmont and Maple in Uptown. A few weeks before Christmas this year, I found myself bragging to my BF, a pizza expert, in my opinion, about Coal Vines killer pizza and the great Caesar salad. We happened to be extremely close to the Plano location and debated making the 30 min drive to Uptown. I wish we had.
I want to point out again that it was a few weeks before Christmas. We walked right into a shoulder-to-shoulder holiday party that took up the main dining area. People were standing with cocktails and bumping up against the other patrons who had been unluckily seated in that room. Why didn't we turn and run? Well, in my experience with the Uptown location, which is always packed in this manner, the company could handle the traffic. And we got lucky and snagged the last table that happened to be in a second dining area within minutes of walking in. The table was a little too close to the kitchen (noisy clanking, gathered servers chatting, and view of bulk storage - not ideal) but at least we were seated. Whew! The place was busy, to say the least, and service was a little scatter-brained due to the party, I think. Well, I hope. Understandable and forgivable. For example, drink orders were slow to arrive and water were requested was forgotten until after our salads were served.
I love CV Caesar salad. I say the dressing makes it. This lettuce, sadly, had little brown edges on some pieces affecting the flavor despite the dressing that I have come to crave. Maybe they pre-cut the lettuce that morning knowing what was to come that evening? The croutons in the salad were extremely oily and way too salty leaving a greasy texture on my palate. Regardless, it was underwhelming but not bad enough to send back. We were hungry so we chomped down anyway and I started to wish I hadn't talked the place up so hard since I couldn't truly vouch for this location. I was crossing my fingers hoping the pizza would redeem me in the eyes of my aficionado dinner date.
Having the holiday party in the room next to us wasn't all bad. There was a cool bonus! The servers assigned to pass appetizers and pizza slices at the party made their way around to the tables, too. We were able to sample things I wouldn't normally order like Smoked Salmon Tartar with goat cheese, avocado and pomegranate vinaigrette. They brought by a whole pizza to sample a slice but we had already ordered our own so we passed.
A sign that our own pizza was soon to arrive, a metal stand landed between us with two plates on top, along with three ramekins of toppings that I love - parmesan, dried oregano and crushed red pepper. Â The pizza arrived shortly there-after with great toppings I knew I could count on. Pizza guru complimented the look of the pizza and noticed that there was a perfect amount of dried oregano already sprinkled across the top of the pizza. Most pizza joints don't take that level of care. We each took a slice and started in. I noticed the pizza was warm, not hot, firm on the edges but limp in the middle almost like it could have cooked a little longer. It still had the same great flavor I have come to expect from Coal Vines with the bouncy crust and tasty coal-baked delicious spots on the back, excellent sauce, same great quality wild mushrooms and who doesn't love pepperoni? We each ate two slices but by the second slice the pizza was cold. Whatever - cold pizza is good, too. There were two slices left over for lunch and our hunger was sated.
We asked for the check and a to-go box and the pizza was whisked away. The check came, we paid and chatted for about 5 more minutes before leaving. Walking to the car we realized the to-go box with our leftover slices never arrived. Ugh. Did I mention service was scatter-brained?
I still love Coal Vines pizza. And I can forgive the Plano location for whatever they were going through the night of the holiday party but I don't imagine I will be back and won't suggest that friends go there unless they refuse to go south of 635. When I want the real-deal CV experience, I will make my way to the Uptown location where they have been able to handle the packed room since day one, where I have been to at least a dozen times from brunch to dinner and countless pick up orders. Their brunch pizzas are amazing - Smoked Salmon pizza, Eggs Benedict pizza or Sunny Side-Up pizza with cracked eggs on top and perfectly runny yolks.
A fresh salad, better service and leaving with our to-go slices would have gotten the Plano location four stars because the pizza quality was still there.
having heard all the hullaballo finally made it to Coal Vines. Â All I can say is meh.
It's ok. Â If you want to have some wine and spend time with your friends, there are worse places to go. Â If you want to eat good coal oven pizza, there are many better places. Â I judged this place on their regular cheeze pizza and their "white pizza".
Neither pizza came to us piping hot. Â Cheeze flavor was only mediocre. Â Not worth the price. Â Fireside and Grimaldi's are both better chains, and some of the newer mom/pop coal/brick oven pizza are a cut above.
I am a Pizza fanatic and this place is one of my favorites. Â
We were given complimentary zucchini chips made fresh daily--yum.
Hubs and I split  a fresh Spinach salad with finely shredded pear, candied walnuts, and Gorgonzola cheese.  The cheese was a little strong, but overall delicious.
We ordered a small Sausage & Red Pepper pie--six big slices and we ended up taking a couple slices home.
The ambiance was very small-bistro with Sinatra playing in the background. Â A little tight for big groups, but it was perfect for two. Â
I am a fan of fresh toppings and thin crispy crust and CV's does it right.
I'm not a huge pizza lover but Coal Vines is de-lish! Â The bartender was ever so pleasant and willing to serve. Â The margherita pizza was loaded with fresh basil and the crust was so yummy and crispy. Â They are very generous on the wine pours so don't be afraid!
5 star food, service, and atmosphere. Well done.
I have never been here before but one of my regular client told me about this place. So i decided to go there for dinner since it wasn't so far from my work. This place is really busy and extremely loud. Seating was kinda close together. They have a huge selection of wine for you to choose from. Â Almost every table ordered pizza, looks good and smell good. So i ordered a large Coal Vines Regular Pie and Coal Vines Calamari. Both are very tasty and the pizza crust is perfect. The service is wonderful, they make sure you have your water filled. I will be back to try others in the menu.
Review Source:I know what you're thinking: a wine bar that serves pizza and has a populated patio/nightlife nestled in proximity to Ra and Seasons 52 in the Shops at Legacy - surely you will never be able to eat there because between everyone's ego and "look at me!" attitude, there won't be enough room for you to get near the place. Â Well, I'm here to tell you I also had the same fears and not only did I live to tell the tale, I was pleasantly surprised by how big a misconception the previous sentence was.
I met a friend for this place based on her recommendation. Â She had been here several times and since I'm willing to try new (legal) things, I decided to give it a go. Â The place itself is not quite "hole in the wall" status but you could easily walk past it. Â It's sort of across the street from where the old Legacy Books bookstore used to be and what will soon be Razor's Edge after they move. Â You'll see the sign above the door, about eight tables on the patio and then an interior that stretches a pretty good distance back with a bar on the left side filled to capacity with wine bottles of just about every variety you can think of.
Before we went, my friend said we had to split the white pizza because it stood head and shoulders above other pizza in the area, despite the fact I have yet to find pizza in the Plano/Frisco area that has either a head or shoulders. Â We were greeted promptly at the door when we arrived and told we could sit anywhere we like. Â We grabbed a patio table by the door for a couple reasons: it was a great night outside but I also wanted to be a part of the "outside Shops at Legacy nightlife" to see if the pretentiousness had permeated from other nearby establishments and would give me a great evening of people watching to entertain us both. Â Our waitress came over and took our drink order with efficiency and gave me a detailed run-through of the menu since I had never been there.
I'm not going to pretend I came here and downed wine while eating pizza. Â That's just a goofy prospect to me but I was very pleased to hear they have a decent selection of beers (which are not on the menu and I probably insulted the integrity of the place by even asking for a beer so by the time you read this review, I will be blacklisted on every wine bar in the 75-mile radius for failing to properly enjoy the atmosphere, or something equally ridiculous).
My friend got a Caesar salad appetizer that looked a great size for a before-meal meal and when our large white pizza, with half sausage and pepperoni, came, I understood what a great size truly is. Â They aren't kidding about the "large" description on their pizza. Â This thing eclipsed our table and I'm pretty sure I did some stretching before attempting to lift a piece to my plate. Â It was worth it, though, as the meal was delicious. Â I'm proud to say the two of us couldn't finish it and if we did, there's something wrong with both of us since that would involve a marathon of eating. Â I'm less proud of the fact that my after-dinner cup of coffee was more akin to a shot glass of coffee as it could be downed in one gulp if you really tried and didn't mind singeing the back of your throat. Â I also never got a second cup of coffee because apparently after our waitress took our check with her tip, she retired to the dark recesses of the place where she presumably went into a deep slumber until further notice.
The inside of the place is kind of crowded, with the bar on the left, rows of tables in the center, the kitchen along the back and the bathrooms in the far corner. Â I could see where the atmosphere in there could be stifling but on the patio, it oddly was a very enjoyable and drama-free experience. Â No vacuousness to be found, no obnoxiously intoxicated people. Â I thought perhaps I was in the wrong shopping center for a few minutes.
And I don't know if we came on "Awesome Music Night" or what but Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" among many other songs? Â It's like someone had stolen my iPod and hooked it up to the speakers.
Bottom line: Sal's may be your average pizzeria and Fireside Pies may be a pizza place that tries too hard but Coal Vines hits the mark just right.
I wish there was an option for 0 stars. While arranging a business dinner for 30 people, I called around town to find a place with a somewhat private dining area with a fun, casual vibe and reasonably priced options.
The man that answered the phone was extremely rude and said that there was a $2,000 dollar minimum on a Thursday night. At first I thought I had misheard him and maybe he said $200. Â But no, he literally laughed at me and said "No it's $2,000". Â For their food and service? Â On a weeknight?? Is the pizza gold plated? Â Diamond studded? No thank you!
We will be going down the street to Fireside Pies instead. Much nicer and friendlier staff... And no ridiculous minimum!
I really enjoyed the pizza and the light romaine salad with lemon vinagrette and black pepper.
Staff is friendly and fast. Good wine list and great deals on the chalkboard. Try a pizza with half and half toppings if you can't decide. The white pizza is my favorite. They have patio seating on nice nights and the wait isn't bad when you have the shops to peruse!
Man, I'm so glad this place opened in The Shops at Legacy. Â I admit - I'm an all out pizza snob...and I was prepared to be less than impressed when my husband and I decided to give this spot a try. Â Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised.
The spot had a great vibe and feel with a cool layout, bar, and picture of Sinatra and Martin on the wall. Â (Though, personally, I could do without all those try so hard Plano types...do we have to wear the whole John Hardy jewelry collection and get our hair done to get a slice of pizza? Â But I don't hold that against establishment.)
I had a great $8 glass of Cab (wine was flowing all around for sure) and Baby Spinach salad with creamy gorgonzola, pears, and candied walnuts to start. Â The dressing was kind of eh - nothing special and a little bland. Â The walnuts were a little too soft for a "candied" salad accoutrement. Â If there was pear, I actually don't remember it. Â So, I probably wouldn't order the salad again - but no big deal. Â Hubby started with the soup of the day - a veggie minestrone. Â I had a taste and thought it had a great simple veggie flavor. Â
We also ordered a large pizza - half white (ricotta, mozz, parm, and oregano) and half bolognese (tomato sauce, mozz, bolognese sauce, and bechamel). Â We went halves because we couldn't decide which sounded better. Â That was a a good call - because I think both were good and a nice complement to each other. Â I can see why the white pie has been proclaimed a favorite in reviews for other Coal Vines locations. Â It had really great simple straight forward clean flavors and the ricotta is D-LISH! Â The bolognese had a nice tomato-y, meaty flavor and a pleasant spicy kick. Â The crust was a nice crispy thin texture and slightly chewy...I think they claim NY style, but I think it leans a little more toward the drier cracker like crunch (what is that Sardinian?) than the subtle doughy-chewy NY style - but that's just me. Â The white pie toppings and crust were perfectly paired. Â The bolognese sauce was a more full flavored slice, but the bolognese's heavier texture ever so slightly overwhelmed the crust.
In all honestly, I would generally give this place 3 stars - but because I haven't had pizza anywhere near this good within the remote vicinity I'm bumping it up a star. Â I know we'll be back because the pizza's good and I'm a happy camper when there's pizza pie and vino!
Also worth noting, this place has good service. Â There's a crew of restaurant veterans hustling around, prompting, and pointing the greener new servers in the right direction. Â The energy of these mangers (I'm guessing) was evident and fostered a feeling in the restaurant that this place had been around and in the family for years...even though this location had only opened maybe a week before we dined there. Â It leant an "old school" vibe and it's clear it's not their first time at the rodeo - especially from how well everything seems to be going in a busy spot that just opened it's doors.
The poor reviews on this place sadden me.
After being a loyal patron to their uptown Dallas location for the past few years, I was especially excited to see them bring Coal Vines to my neck of the woods.
The restaurant belongs to a chain of restaurants that includes Nick and Sams steakhouse and N&S Grill. But Coal Vines stands alone.
Properly greeted and welcomed in at around 6pm on Saturday evening we felt the warm vibes we knew and felt from before. After being promptly seated we put in our drink orders to our attentive waitress while we chose our mains. A few minutes passed and we had chosen.
Started with the spinach salad with onions, pears and walnuts; it was a delicious and light salad. Also my dining companion ordered the greens salad and the only complaint was that the dressing was a bit too oily.
We decided to split a large pizza (8 HUGE slices) which was the original pie and a white pizza. The thin, crispy, well seasoned crust gave way to a multitude of toppings including fresh mozzarella, ricotta and basil. The new York style pizza is huge and a large could easily feed a family of 6.
Come here and enjoy the wonderful patio or the bar wine a wine list sure to please.
We will for sure be back.
I have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant in my life. The manager actually yelled at me because I corrected him when he brought me the wrong salad.
I went with a group of five people on Saturday night. It's a very small place, but they have a really cute patio. We were seated in about half an hour, but they put us at a four-person table in the back, so my friend had to sit off the end of the table. Every time a server walked by they would bump him in the back. The hostess even said "this isn't going to work," but didn't move us. We also had to ask the hostess to send a waitstaff over to our table to take our order.
When the waitress finally arrived, we ordered the bruschetta for our appetizer. The bruschetta never came; and when our pizzas came out we told the waitress we didn't want the bruschetta anymore. After that, she came back and asked us twice if we still wanted it. There was no apology given.
We also all ordered salads before the pizza. The manager delivered the salads. He got my salad wrong (he brought a Caesar with the dressing on the side, and I had asked for the italian vinaigrette with the dressing on the side), and when I corrected him, he literally yelled at me for not knowing the exact name of what I ordered. He did bring me the correct salad after a heated argument, but again, there was no apology. I complained to the waitress that the manager was rude to me, and another manager came to our table and apologized on his behalf. Â
The pizza was cooked unevenly and there was nothing really special about it. The bolognese sauce (meat sauce) on the pizza was unique, but not good enough to make up for everything that happened during our visit. After all the mishaps they didn't even give us a discount off of the bill. Appalling. Â
I will never go back. Go to Sal's or Fireside Pies for your pizza in the Shops.
