I have been to Coral Gables before as our family has a summer home in the area. Â This time around we had a party of 10 to include 5 children. Â Since it was dinner time, I was concerned about the wait but was told 20-30 minutes. Â I asked the hostess if she was sure because we had 5 children with us and was told "yes and you can wait in the bar". Â We decided NOT to wait in the bar but out in front...after 30 minutes I was told the party of 10 they were waiting on to leave was still seated. Â Over one hour later we finally sat down and was told by the waiter that the kitchen was backed up. Â Fine, we wanted to order the kids food right away but he insisted on getting our drink order first. Â
After our drinks arrived, we ordered all the food and 2 appetizers. Â 1/2 our later our onion blossom and mozzarella sticks arrived and we were given (2) since we had to wait. Â At least 30 minutes later our food arrived...including the mac n cheese that was ordered for the kids. Â I ordered a beef sandwich which you can tell sat under in the window for awhile at the meat was hard/crunchy, my mother' meal was completely wrong and our waiter did not offer to change it for her AND they did not bring out the 4th kids meal (chicken fingers). Â We had to wait another 15 minutes for that but in the meantime, we were all giving my son portions of our meal as it was 8:30 by this time.
Having worked in the service industry..the kids meals should have been brought out right away...I am sure boxed Mac n Cheese does not take an hour to make. Â I did not see the bill but it was evident that we were not taken care of like the waiter said we would be and since he automatically added gratuity, don't think he really cared.
This is a resort town and they should be used to being busy after being in business for over (50) years. Â They should really care about their service and their customers that may frequent the area more than others. Â I would go back to have cocktails on the deck and listen to the live music but never again for dinner.
We had lunch on 7/13/2013 the food was excellent. Â Best filet that I have eating. Â The service was excellant. We always enjoy eating at Coral Gables when we are in Saugatuck. Â We set on the patio and was able to listen to the music from the bar next door. Â Â With the good food and view it was an excellant experience.
Review Source:food in all fairness was OK. Â but attention to detail (served wrong entrees not once but twice for lunch, and only two in our party) and waiting 1 hour and 10 minutes for a grilled chicken salad and Coral Gables Club sandwich with fries kind of tells the story.
we have been coming to Saugatuck for a decade and Coral Gables has slipped to the lower 10% of places we would recommend for lunch or dinner.
humbly, skip it and go down the block to The Mermaid. Â pricier, but a much better overall experience.
Dude. Great place for pan fried perch and a view. Try the pan fried perch with a craft beer and sit outside watching over lake Kalamazoo and all of the boats parked and moving around. Also grilled salmon and any salad. All good here. Best of all the service is the great. If you're in saugatuck, come here.
Review Source:This place is only good for the view, which was nice but everything else left something to be desired to say the least. I paid $8 for a glass or warm white wine that you would spend $5 on in the grocery store for the entire bottle. Yikes. And the server was rude and never even checked on me.
Review Source:Ate here on a Friday night in June at about 8pm. Â We were one of only about 4 tables of people in the entire restaurant area (the bar area was a bit busier). Â Maybe that should have told us something, but it was a lovely evening and we were enticed by the waterfront patio seating. Â Service was mediocre. Â Beer list was mediocre. Â Burgers were less than wonderful. Â Fried perch and fries were delicious! Â I would go back simply because of the location and for the fried perch. Â We enjoyed the lovely evening, the live music from the patio next door, and a great view of the sunset.
Review Source:This review is for the Corner Bar which is part of Coral Gables, located at the water level, waterside. It is separate from the main restaurant and has it's own menu. The server was very nice and polite, though is took a good 20 minutes for us to receive our Baja burger. It has jalapeno cheese on it that is a soft runny cheese like you might get on your nacho's in a theater, with jalapeno's in it. The meat was dry. It was really mediocre. Make sure you lean over your basket so the cheese lands on your fries and not on your lap. I was asked to meet here by a customer for a business meeting, and although I'm okay with that, most people might want a little more of a business appropriate setting with a broader menu to hold a professional  meeting. Love the area and love the view, but if I return I'll try somewhere else.
Review Source:Ok, so yes, a lot of these reviews are 100% correct. Â The decor is outdated, and the food is less than impressive! Â Both need a complete overhaul. Â Don't go here for dinner, as there are much better choices. Â However, I cannot give less than 4-stars because I live in Saugatuck, and know exactly what to expect from Coral Gables. Â For us, it is a place to go and sit on the water and enjoy the most delicious Margaritas you will ever have! Â Yum!
Review Source:I'm giving this place 5 stars, even though I can totally understand all the lower star ratings. We walked by this place on a Sunday and it was a madhouse. However, my high rating is based on visiting the place on a quiet Monday mid-afternoon. We parked literally right in front, walked right in and were seated at a nice table out on the balcony. We ordered drinks and appetizers - the appetizers were better than expected (based on all the reviews) and we just sat there eating and drinking and chilling and  soaking in the ambiance and watching the boats go by. Service was friendly, prices were fine for the drinks and appetizers.
I'm sure my rating would be lower if I had waited in line, sat inside, ordered a real meal.
This place is obviously somewhere for the locals to hang out all day/all night and drink until closing time. I was finishing my drink at the bar when the "gentleman" sitting next to me fell off his bar stool face first into the floor. His group of old cronies and the bartender seemed totally unfazed. They basically propped him back up and ordered him another drink. Keep in mind, this is only 7:30 in the evening. I could not believe what I was seeing. Disgusting; I will never set foot in this place again!
Review Source:3 stars if you are looking for a place on the water. Â We were. Â It is super casual and probably great at night for drinks. Â We were there for lunch, the service was great the food was okay but pricey for what you get. Â I was underwhelmed with the food but the deck over looking the river on the main drag in Saugatuck was great.
Review Source:Great service, but this place seems confuse--the menu features fish and pasta dishes you'd find in a nicer restaurant, but the staff is dressed in shorts and tee shirts and the decor is from the 70s.
I can overlook all this if a delicious meal follows, but my family agreed that the best part of our $100 dinner was the bread basket.
This place is definitely stuck in a certain era BUT that is the charm for me. Â It isn't new and sleek but it was slick when it first opened. Â It is what it is and embraces it. Â Beverages were fresh and tasty. Â The artichoke dip tasted store-bought but the coconut shrimp was great. Â My whitefish was honestly pretty forgettable but my wife's steak was FANTASTIC. Â A good steak isn't as easy as most would think. Â This is mostly classic American family style dining. Â Chicken parmesan, salads, fish, seafood, etc. Â I think the pasta and seafood dishes would have been a better bet. Â My kids had steak and chicken tenders and seem pleased with their meals. Â The view of the water is nice and they were very kid friendly. Â The staff was warm and polite. Â Charm goes a long way and offset some of the food the was lacking. Â Plenty of seating but I'm guessing the place fills up at night (we went for late lunch).
Take the family. Â Get some steak and pasta. Â Relax and look out on the boats. Â Don't over-expect from Coral Gables and you won't be dissappointed.
Stopped by for a couple of drinks with my crazy family so I have a feeling that added to my not so great rating. Â The space of this place just seems way too big. Â We sat on the patio and listened to an awkward band perform. I didn't try any food but it didn't look that great. Â I would look around the area for a pretty place to go next time I'm in the area.
Review Source:Go for the drinks and revery; not the food. Â Service is friendly, but let's call this place what it is: an oversized party (read: WATERING HOLE) spot for the boating set. Â Keeping that in mind, this place isn't so bad! Â
Great spot to unwind, listen to canned Jimmy Buffett, sip a Bell's Oberon or two and people watch (this is particularly excellent here). Â Don't hold your breath on the eats, and you'll walk away without too much disappointment.
Pretty underwhelming experience overall. I left the restaurant feeling like I wouldn't need to return next summer. Sure, the view is pretty - and with out the view this place would be a complete write-off - but the dirty and ancient decor combined with an unimaginative menu and a staff that lacks enthusiasm makes for a less-than-mediocre choice.
My two stars do not pay tribute to the view or outside patio space, but to their sweet potato fries. Oh my god... They deserve five stars on their own. I wish I could transplant those fries into a another venue... If you find yourself coaxed in to going to Coral Gables, treat yourself to the sweet potato fries - they'll be the highlight of an otherwise forgettable experience.
Coral Gables is definitely a "bar" destination and not a "dinner" destination. They have several levels of decks outside. During the day they had a fun band and people were dancing.
The crowd was mixed, it was interesting to see some "older" folks getting wasted, like they missed out on college spring break or something. People were dancing and taking shots along w/ their blood pressure pills and rubbing on aspercreme after dancing.
At night there is a "club" atmosphere inside. Bartender was really friendly and had some creative drinks. The crowd was mostly locals since it was a Sunday night. There were some literal GRANDPAS dancing their asses off and macking on the young girls dancing. It was a riot to watch.
Overall- good drinks, decent band, decent dj, friendly bartender, crappy food.
i see the overall rating for this place is already 2 stars and thats just about right. The only thing this place has going for it is the outdoor seating on the water front, the extra start for a total of 2.
staff was rude to us and other patrons as if we were "bothering" them. i overheard a waitress complaining about patrons that "everytime she turns around people ask for 29 more things". ugh...you're in the wrong business honey...
saugatuck has been nothing but a great experience with the people and staff at other places I'm really suprised to see how grumpy staff are here. My suggestions dont eat here just order a simple drink like a beer to have minimal interaction with staff and enjoy the outdoor deck and view.
the inside is run down and straight outta the 70s.
when we first walked in this establishment we were hoping for the best. marrows was still closed cause they don't open til 5 pm and we had someone in our group that was hungry NOW! We saw Coral Gable and thought, well why not, we haven't tried this place in the last 6 years we have been visiting and we visit saugatuck about 4-5 times a year.
Upon entering your greeted with with a sense of discombobulation! nothing matches, looks very outdated, circa 1970 mint green walls with navy blue accent walls and grey carpet that probably hasnt been shampooed since 1970's ...with extremely uncomfortable seating.
The wait staff were all 15/16 y/o's who had no idea what they were doing, when we asked what the wait time for a table was they said for outside it was around 45 mins, but yet we saw plenty of tables empty. hmmmm so we asked what about inside? she said 10-20 mins. maybe she wasnt sure! Our friend was hungry and bitchy and we needed to shut him up so said fine, we then went to the bar where we were greeted by a very messy dirty looking bartender that was slower than two snails f-cking! i mean, it should not take you 10 mins to make 1 bloody mary! FOR REAL! It took our bartender about 10 mins to get all our drinks made and right when they were handed to us our table was ready! WOW! thats how slow this guy was!
We get to our table...right by the window with a nice view. fabulous! Our waitress ( should couldnt of been older the 16 ) Â brought us our water and asked if we needed drinks, um no we have full drinks in front of us but thanks. she walked away as we browsed our menu. we didnt see her for at least a good 20-30 mins before she came back. She took our order easy enough and we didnt see her again for another 30-40 mins.
our food comes out and i swear to god no lie my food was a frozen dinner served on a plate! the rice was uncle bens minute rice and the chicken was so bland i couldn't use enough salt & pepper on it to get taste! Â Everyone else in our party was rather disappointed as well. it was just plain yuck!
after we left ( still  hungry cause no one wanted to finish the meal is was so gross) we wound up getting ice cream then back to our rental and ate. this place is absolutely one of the places you HAVE TO STAY AWAY FROM!
BEWARE! Poor service, poor staff, poor food. nothing was fresh at all! Absolutely disappointing and horrendously disgusting!
There's a theme of disappointing dining experiences in Saugatuck emerging with me this year, and unfortunately what will likely be my last dinner there of the summer season did nothing to change it. Our first choice was Marro's, but since it was early and they weren't open yet we decided to eat here instead.
The decor was not far from the original 1950's-era construction, updated sometime in the 1970's, which was also probably the last time the carpet was cleaned. Furniture was cheap, uncomfortable, and the tables appeared haphazardly placed. Upon entry, the hostess (who looked to be about fifteen) informed me that there'd be a 30 - 40 minute wait for the patio, but she couldn't estimate the wait for an inside table because "all the waitresses were running around" (they looked to be of high school age as well).
Against my better judgement, my party of four decided to wait at the bar-- where we were served by a fellow who looked like he might have just finished participating in a Hell's Angels motorcycle trek across the South. Not long after being served our drinks, we were paged to the hostess station to be seated.
Our waitress was nice enough, but this job clearly wasn't her calling. We ordered a "blooming onion" appetizer first, which was greasy, poorly-seasoned, and uninspired. Our food took at least 40 minutes to arrive, and we watched helplessly as the waitress walked past our table and almost across the entire length of the restaurant to retrieve a serving stand for the tray containing four meals, all of which she had to do by herself. Amazing nothing was lost in the process.
Sometimes you can tell how the food will taste by the kind of plates it's served on. Our meals were presented on cheap, unmatched plates that looked like they came from the cafeteria in the same high school that the hostess and wait staff spent their weekdays. My spaghetti was horrible: bland, overcooked. The pasty noodles kept the watery sauce company in shared misery. At least the mushrooms were fresh (although some at my table disputed this-- and perhaps they were canned after all, and just seemed fresh compared to the crappy pasta).
I almost forgot: My meal was advertised as including rolls and butter, but neither was presented until I reminded the waitress-- and then they didn't arrive until the meal was over. Always a sucker for a warm roll and sweet creamery butter, I looked forward to trying one anyway. I shouldn't have bothered: It was as bad as everything else. I would not have been surprised if they had been picked up from the local Aldi a week before.
I didn't taste any of the food the other members of my party ordered, but I think it's safe to say no one from the group will ever return.
The Blue Moon in nearby Douglas Michigan was one of my favorite restaurants of all time, and unfortunately has gone out of business and is now a bank-sale special at $1.2 million. I am tempted to raise the down payment and buy the place myself if only to show Coral Gables how a dining experience should be. Any other victims of this place want to join me?
While wondering Saugatuck on Venetian night and checking out all the art stands, my family and I decided we should grab a drink on the water because it was a beautiful night.
Pros:
-A huge outdoor seating area located on the water and near the boardwalk. Â
-Lots of fun people and a fun environment for drinking and socializing.
-Being able to have a cocktail and stand on the sidewalk if all the tables are full.
-Cheap drinks.
Cons:
-Rude bartenders and crappy service.
-Only one size, super small, beers and drinks.
-Not a wide variety of alcohol.
Obviously the pros are all directly related to a cool place to sit and a cheap place to get drunk. Â That doesn't sound too bad huh?? Well, the problem was the shitty service and rude bartenders. Â That can make a good time into a bad time, quick!
I went to buy my grandma and aunt drinks at the bar and the bartender rudely told me she had to see all of their ideas. Â Granted, I understand the law, I've bartended and am currently a server, but they all look well over 40. Â Not to mention, my grandma can't walk too well and I was not about to make her get up and walk into the bar. Â After I argued with her for a few minutes she finally gave me the drinks.. which were mediocre at best.
I didn't eat here so I can't rate on that, but I'd assume just from the interior of the place that it would be OK at best.
To keep this short and simple, it's awesome if you can get a table on the patio and drink.. because you won't spend a lot of money.. hopefully you'll have better service than I did.
I only went once and food was just okay. But my seating was right by the window and I could look over the river, it was very nice! The service was also very good.
The actual restaurant is great for families. There are several different bars in the building and even a piano bar. It is the best place for drinks (from all that I have heard of).
I thought the food was okay but it wasn't grand. Kids do love the place though. And families will find it a fun place to be no matter what time of day.
Also on a note, in my opinio it is NOTHING like the Mermaid bar and grill (which is 10x better).
