I came here with a friend tonight. We are both from out of town. We were seated immediately and then the service went down hill from there. Another waitress came over and asked if we had been helped  yet. Upon learning we had not, a waitress and trainee came over. We had soft drinks which took forever to get. We ordered dinner and it took a very long time. I would give this place one star but the food was excellent. The waitress did not seem happy, kind of blah.. wont be back
Review Source:Daily Planet WAS my favorite place to grab good downtown. I still love it, but had a couple OK dishes last few visits. The atmosphere is wonderful. Dimmed lighting and candles in the main dining area. The solar area is lighted with local artwork and has comfy couches. The bar area is big and has quite a bit of seating. Staff is always friendly, and the establishment has a very local vibe to it.
Now for my food review:
Burgers are great! Mondays they used to have a special burger and beer for $10. Amazing deal. I believe this is still going on, but have not been on a Monday in a while.
The other food I find that I love tends to change with the menu every few months. It's likely to be related to what's in season, and the menu is fairly small so it makes sense. I had a fried chicken dinner there on Thursday. Chicken was very good, and although it was leg and thigh meat, it was boneless. It had a honey glaze that I believe was mixed with Jalepeno. A nice flavor and spice. Sides included veg. and mac and cheese. Mac and cheese I found to be dry and somewhat boring. The visit prior to this I had a lamb special of the night in December. I found the meat to be very fatty and almost unedible. Very disspointing for every other experience I had loved my meal.
Best part of the menu: DESSERT!!!! Pear roasted in red wine and spices served with icecream. Incredible. Another friend had chocolate cake, which was also very good. Never had a bad dessert there.
For being downtown I find prices to be reasonable for being a slightly more upscale establishment. For local and quality expect to spend $15-$20 per meal. I will continue to go back, but not sure I would have had my bachelorette party there again like I did in December.
Daily Planet can be hit or miss.  The ambience is consistently great, despite the restaurant's crowded tendency. The food takes risks, like the wild game sausage board or rabbit, wild boar, and duck-billed, platypus (or maybe it was Elk), and it does exceptionally well. Other times, it takes risks like Southern Fried Chicken with jalapeño honey, and confuses falls short of my expectations. That might be my grandma's fault. The drinks are weak but palatable, and the meat comes from humane and sustainable sources.
Prices are reasonable. Wait staff, variable.
Hit or miss.
This was another place that came highly recommended by our waitress at the Ice House Restaurant. We were headed to Levity for Comedy after dinner and the waitress said, "Oooo, you MUST stop in to the Daily Planet afterward for a Dirty Gherkin Martini"! Ummm.....YES PLEASE! It was more delicious than I had imagined. My friend sampled some of their "infused vodkas" which were equally amazing. My fav of those was the Chai infused. I imagined putting this in my coffee on snowy day (which we don't have in FL, but I can dream). The people at the bar were friendly and the bartender as well. We just enjoyed a couple cocktails and called it a night. Perfect place for a night cap!! I hope to be back one day.
Review Source:Every time I'm in Burlington and my brother and I go out to tie one on, we always seem to end our night here. The bar in and of itself is a pretty typical bar with a good atmosphere.
What confuses me about the bar is the, well, bar. They have a ton of different liquors and all the ingredients to be a great classic cocktail bar. That said, they're not a classic cocktail bar although I'm a classic cocktail snob. As a result, I've developed the following relationship with the bartender who's usually working when we're there:
I order some classic cocktail (sazerac, boulevardier, etc.).
She harasses me mercilessly for ordering such a drink.
She makes some variation of the drink based on the recipe I give her.
I thoroughly enjoy the drink.
She continues to harass me when I order another.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Maybe I'm a bit of a masochist, but I can't imagine a night out in Burlington without ending it here.
2 friends and I stopped in at 7pm on a Friday night without reservations and were promptly seated in the solarium. The server was friendly and politely fielded our questions about the menu. We enjoyed some of their unique cocktails and shared the seafood bourride, ginger beer mussels and tuna tostada. All were delicious and the sharing of plates was welcomed by the restaurant staff. I had taken these 2 friends to Daily Planet 3 years ago and they insisted we go back.
Review Source:Enjoyed myself here. Had a few tasty drinks, some solid appetizers (the fried calamari was sooooooooo good), and enjoyed my entree. I had the shrimp with rice and beans, and just made sure to ask for it extra spicy (which they delivered on).
If you're in or around Burlington, I'd definitely recommend this place as a fun dinner spot!
Burlington's least friendly bartenders paired with overpriced drinks. I don't think so!
So I ordered a round of Jameson Picklebacks. The bartender gave us shots of Jameson paired with shots of what looked live pickle juice but turned out to be the juice that the bar olives had spent the last who-knows-how-many years in. They look the same, so we didn't notice until we did the shot. That was one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted. So we complained to the bartender and he told us that he was too lazy to go get pickle juice from the kitchen before so he had given us that olive stuff. He then got us another round with actual pickle juice. At that point I think all those drinks should have been free. Then I would have gladly forgotten about the whole thing. But no, the guy actually tried to charge us for 2 rounds!!! Really?? Needless to say there was no tip for him.
This is my second time at the Daily Planet and again I was thoroughly underwhelmed. My first meal (over three years ago) was very uninspiring and lacked flavor. For the price, I was not happy.
I decided to give it another shot. I thought to myself, "Why not? I haven't been there forever, maybe it's gotten better!". Well, it hasn't.
I am gluten and dairy free and the menu did not have many options. So I ordered a mixed green salad with toasted pecans, roasted garlic and grilled mahi-mahi. The fish was fine, nothing special. Just grilled fish. The garlic was the best part of the dish. The greens we disgusting. They were slimy, wilted and almost inedible. I was incredibly disappointed. Especially since they're focus is on local and fresh ingredients. It was not fresh and not good.
To say the least, two strikes and this place is out. I will not be going back for food anytime soon.
This is based solely on the Planet Burger.
"Meh. I've experienced better." is definitely how I'd put it. I went with a friend for their Monday night special - $6 for the burger for a $4 savings. The burger comes with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Anything else is an additional cost.
I added the pork belly for $2, but I wish I hadn't. It was overly fatty and flavorless, adding nothing but grease to my burger.
My friend added guacamole, cheese and mushrooms to hers, and it looked a lot better than what was on my plate.
Complimentary bread and side fries were yummy.
Service was great, but the quality of the food overshadows the experience.
this was far and away the best meal i had while in vermont. and i never would have found it if i hadn't asked a local where he would eat. the minuted he described the place as "eclectic" i knew i had to eat there.
i entered with my family of 6 through the bar, and was a little scared at first, because it was so small, dark and loud. Thankfully one of the bartenders directed us into the garden room, where the Hostess seated our large party in a matter of minutes.
Our server, Melody, was so cordial, and welcoming. we were tired, and it had taken us a while to find a place to eat, so there were a couple grumpy people in the group. but Melody took everything in stride. got our drinks quickly, and some delicious bread, and told a few jokes to get us all in a better mood. She was a delight.
and when the food arrived, it was perfect. the menu is not large, a could salads, a few appetizers and 4-5 entrees plus the nights specials. However, they do a lot with what they offer. on the back of the menu is a list of all the local sources for the ingredients, most of which are also organic. These guys are putting things together in new and interesting ways, and it works beautifully. Pickled beets with granny smith apples, over butterhead lettuce with honey-mustard dressing. Fried chicken with homemade mac and cheese and a green apple/plum chutney. everything was amazing, both to the palet and to the eye. the presentation was simple, showed off the food, with out being pretentious. the drink offerings was also spectacular. they have a long list of house cocktails, all very original. i tried the sugar shanty, (gin, vermont bitters, maple and limoncello i think) it was delicious.
the atmosphere was lovely. it was nice and dark, intimate and classic. in the garden room there were hanging plants, and skylights. it's nice that theres a separate bar and dining room. it allows for a more intimate setting in the dining room, while the bar can be a boisterous as it likes. the next time i'm in burlington, i will be back at the Daily Planet. i'm so lucky i found it the first time! its truly a gem.
I went to Daily Planet with a group of people for a friend's birthday. We went at 5p when they opened and were seated immediately. There weren't many other customers in the restaurant throughout our meal, but the service was abysmal. The meal took almost two hours and our waitress was not attentive at all. I don't need someone hovering around me, but it would have been nice if the meal progressed.
Even though the service was terrible, the food itself was actually pretty good. I started with Maura's Salad - a simple green salad with grapes and toasted pecans tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette. I asked for it without bleu cheese and it was delicious. For my meal I ordered the PEI Mussels - these were cooked to order in a delicious broth that was sweet and was perfect for the baguette that was served on the side. My boyfriend ordered the chicken pita which was pretty good. The chicken pita came with fries and they were delicious - I recommend the fries!
HORRIBLE SERVICE, FOOD WAS BARELY ENJOYABLE, and not at all what I hoped for. We ate on the bar side. I ordered nachos, how hard can it be to make bad nachos? Usually this can not happen with nachos but it did. The salad my friend ordered was so overdressed there was a pool at the bottom. I'm not sure what happened the other night, but I will not be back anytime soon!
Review Source:My wife and I went here for restaurant week. Wow, it was all great! Â We both had the ravioli appetizer. She had the flank steak and I had scallops (see my picture). For dessert we split the ice cream sandwich and the chocolate peanut butter. It all looked and tasted excellent.
Nice atmosphere, nice service, nice food.
The martinis are just as good!
Although I graduated from UVM over 5 years ago, I still dream about the "Maura's fabulous salad" which I would double in size (not because I am a bottomless pit but because the appetizer version is small and I like it for my meal) and add grilled chicken. Â I have a lot of great memories here, and hope to come back soon and write another review!
Review Source:A small group of friends and I dined at Daily Planet last Saturday night. Â We made a reservation for 6:30 and were seated immediately. Â With the complimentary basket of bread, we also began our meal with the corn-crusted calamari appetizer, which included "itzamma. Â balsamic reduction, aioli, and fresh lime" ($9). Â For entrees, two of us had the Beef Tips Burgundy , which included "Vermont beef, crimini mushroom, a red wine demi-glace, and herb sauteed carrots" ($16). Â Another entree ordered was the Braised Duck Leg, which included sweet potato hash, roasted leek, and vanilla jus" ($19). Â My other friend had an order of the P.E.I. Mussels (cooked with black garlic and ginger beer, served with a toasted baguette; $10) and a side salad, which was a larger portion than our normal "side" salads. Â
We were all satisfied with our entrees. Â I wasn't expecting a "stew" for my entree, but the flavors were still very good. Â The service was great, and so were our cocktails. Â Daily Planet is a cute restaurant for a date or night with the girls.
I have a long history with t.D.P. .....I actually really enjoy it here, the food isn't too bad, and the cocktails are strong as hell. Â I enjoy the restaurant as a whole, however, it's not a place that I personally could stay and hang out at all night. Â It's an eeensy bit tacky...a place for hipsters to kind of congregate, not exactly my scene, but it sure as hell beats a lot of the other college bars in Burlington. Â On that note, definitely drop by for a drink at the start or at the end of your night... the bar staff is generally friendly, the martinis are strong, and the ambiance is chill albeit the strange crowd.
Review Source:The restaurant sounds more like a newspaper from a Marvel comic, no? There are a handful of restaurants that offer burgers at happy hour prices during the winter to attract customers. Monday is burger night here at the Daily Planet so I thought I'd finally try theirs. For $6, you get their "planet burger," with local ingredients and house fries. For only $3 more, you get a pint of their draught of the night., which was the Magic Hat Odd Notion Apple Cider on this particular Monday.
The burger patty itself was a bit on the dry side, but otherwise well portioned and nice grilled buns to go with it. You get the usual condiments, but tack on a buck extra for mushrooms, cheese, bacon or any other extras. The house fries were surprisingly good and addicting. For $9 total per person, it was a great recession-friendly dinner. Not the best happy hour $6 burger I've had, but slightly better than your average.
Daily Planet based purely for their burger meal is a 3.5, but I'm bumping it to 4 stars for the friendly price tag and the great service. We were seated without any wait time, and the waiter was prompt, brought our food out quickly, and also brought out some bread while we waited. The rosemary bread with olive oil is actually quite tasty so make sure you fill up on that if you're still hungry. The rest of their dinner menu is limited, but the chicken and dumplings sound promising.
I was with a friend's parents from North Carolina and all they could talk about was how much they wanted to go to Daily Planet and how everyone they talked to was recommending it to them...I'd never even considered eating here, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I ordered the Ginger Tofu Stir-Fry and was disappointed that the tofu was fried, but the peanut sauce was tasty and the basmati rice was done perfectly. There was a mix of different veggies (broccoli, cabbage, carrots etc...) in the stir fry. It was tasty, but I wouldn't need to order it again.
2 of the other members of my party had the chicken and dumplings and the other 2 had the beef burgundy...nothing got rave reviews but all it all it was a nice experience.
Definitely not "the place" to eat in Burlington in my opinion, but tasty nonetheless.
I will need to update this once I eat a full meal there, but after a few interesting cocktails and a delicious appetizer, I know I'll be back!
Last night I decided I needed some carbs to go with booze-juice, and enjoyed the pierogies. They are so good, filled with perfect consistency mashed potatoes, served with a homemade apple sauce, creme fraiche and lots of sauerkraut. They had a nice crisp on them from some time in the pan, and for 8 bucks it was a solidly hearty serving. Yum!
I just keep thinking about how rotten my experience was here the last two times. Â So, I have to say this....
-The bar area is great and has an amazing atmosphere.
-If you have to sit in the back part, leave.
-Even if you sit in the bar...don't expect great food.
All in all, my thought is this place is in the middle of an identity crisis. Â The front is so funky and cool...the bad nothing to talk about.
Daily Planet is pretty scrumptious. I don't know if I'd ever eat there again, as I went ALL OUT for supper the time that I went. I mean cheese board, bread basket, a pot of chai tea and a big ol' swordfish filet poached in tomato butter atop seasonal VT veggies. My boyfriend got their Angus burger with Cabot clothbound cheddar and sauteed morel mushrooms. Their french fries are to die for, and their cheese selection was very pleasing. Freakin' OUTRAGEOUS prices for the cheeses, $4 for a wedge about the size of your thumb. Can't say I enjoyed that, but the waitstaff was wonderful and super-pleasant, and the desserts (though I didn't order any) looked fabulous. Atmosphere gets 4 stars, comfy and beautiful. Lots of copper paint. Hard not to love.
Review Source:Excellent food. Their appetizers are great; I recommend a tapas-style meal (but the plates are too big for more than a few on the table at a time.) Great cheese board selections. Like many VT hip spots, it's quite localvore. A bit pricey, but yummy. Not as many veggie options as there should be.
Review Source:I am not sure what has happened with the menu, but the vegetarian options took a major nose dive. Â The tasty sounding 5 grain veggie burger was just a disappointment. Â Served luke warm, with way too big a bun, and sad looking side veggies. Â
Sad times if you are looking for a drink & a veggie option for a burger.
One of my favorite places to hang in Burlington. Â Great food, good prices, great bar scene, cool music, and off the beaten track from the tourists trolling Church Street. Â One of the best burgers around, Dogfishhead 90 on tap, and they can mix a good drink. Â New chef is supposed to be very good, and hopefully that awesome bartender Amanda still works there.
Review Source:A colleague and I were up in Burlington for business. Â The concierge at our hotel recommended the Daily Planet for dinner. Â We arrived around 8pm on a Wednesday and it was pretty hopping yet we were promptly seated. Â The started the meal off right for me.
If you are a person who enjoys a quality cocktail, the Daily Planet has a pretty good selection of unique drinks. Â I wanted something refreshing since we had just completed a 6hr drive and got their adapted version of a Pimm's Cup (who's name slips my mind). Â It was pretty good, a little too light for my tastes so the next time I will ask for the gin included.
Dinner between my colleague and I consisted of two apps and two entrees: Nitty Gritty Corn Crusted Calamari, Steamed P.E.I. mussels, Garganelli and Rock Shrimp, and Braised Blackberry Rock Lamb Shoulder. Â The top choice: the calamari. Â There is nothing better than crunchy seafood. Â The mussels were soft but a little flat on taste. Â The Garganelli and Rock Shrimp is a very creamy dish so be prepared to order light if you are going for this dish. Â The Lamb was very tastey little gaminess to the meat.
The service is fast and helpful. Â They are always coming around the table, making sure everything with your meal is going exactly as you planned. Â The atmosphere is comfortable and warm.
In conclusion, I would come here again, trying new drinks, new apps, and new entrees. Â Grade: B+
I'm a little sad that for the four years I lived in Burlington, I never did get a chance to eat here. What I did do, was frequent the bar with a few friends. The atmosphere here is perfect for nights where you just want to sit, enjoy a strong drink and have a good conversation. Everyone seems to be in a great mood at The Daily Planet and it often leads to conversations springing up between different tables and friends being made. While I like Drink, Ake's, Green Room etc, Daily Planet was my fave place to just be. They also make the best Grateful Dead in Burlington, no lie.
Review Source:Co-written by four folks who are all minor league foodies, two locals, two from San francisco. Â Overall better than average for burlington.
Appetizers:
Fried assoago cheese... Winner.
Mussels... Fight for the broth, worth the effort.
Entrees:
Pork belly with lobster gnochi- really rich, gnochi makes it, hold the onions next time
Rock shrimp pasta, delectable, corn nuts are best addition
Arctic char- risotto was better than the fish
Chicken Caesar- very uniquely good dressing
Wine: both bottles were great, wonderful help selecting from the list.
Highly attentive and enthusiastic servers (Meghan and Lindsey), it's easy to see she really knew and enjoyed the food and wine she described.
"contraption" friendly restaurant that still love local farmers and foods.
We were here over President's Day weekend, and had the most wonderful meal! Â As a New Yorker, I thought it would be hard to find a good meal in Burlington, but boy was I wrong! Â The food was all excellent -- very flavorful and cooked to perfection. Â And the chef buys most of his meat and produce from local farms, which I always consider a plus. Â I would rather eat in this restaurant than many high-end places I've eaten at in NYC!
Review Source:The funky urban vibe lives on in this local yokel bistro sporting a new menu but it's gonna take more than a new gold and silver paint job on the water pipes to get it to the next level. The smelt appetizers were excellent but the entrees lacked zip. At least try salt and pepper already. Announcing that home churned butter is available for a dollar extra was a little tacky and we said no thanks on just the principle.
Review Source:I am sad that I don't love the restaurant, the bar is fantastic. When Tikki Barber was in town, I took him and the NBC crew here for drinks.
The restraurant is a earthy-hip-30's and 40-somethings place. I love the menu selection. Why I give this restaurant low marks is because they skimp on portions making it very pricey for what you are served.
Again, love the artsy comfortable bar area.
I'm really surprised by all the low scores for Daily Planet...this is totally where the locals eat in Burlington & the crowd & atmosphere are just so mellow I dont know how you couldn't love it. The menu we sampled was really tasty...bison steak, tuna, fabulous coconut carrot cake...and really reasonably priced Four Vines red zin...whats not to love?!
The bar here is great too...a wonderful place to grab a drink & catch up...they were playing the beastie boys double album which rocked...and the bartender was SO friendly. Everytime we're in town we go here at least twice...
My all time favorite place in America. Â No really, I swear. Â Great food with a menu that evolves on a regular basis. Â Wait staff that get to know you when you go regularly. Â Nice decor/environment, although I hang out in the bar area or outside weather permitting, and rarely go back into the restaurant proper...although the atrium (is that the right word?) is perfect for a cold sunny day. Â It's like my cheers and I hang out there almost daily when I am back in Burlington.
Review Source:What happened to my FAVORITE restaurant?! I used to adore this place. Aside from the ambiance (which has remained), it's nothing like it was before! No more quality entrees under $14, no more quality drinks made consistently with a decent amount of liquor, no more charming waitstaff. The prices have been jacked up and the food quality comprimised. Daily Planet? I think I'll daily ban it. Go back to your roots, DP!
