This is the Goldilocks of pubs. Not too noisy, but not depressingly void. A good amount eclectic wall art, but a respect to not be too zane-y. The beer selection and menu have good options but are not incomprehensibly large or limited. If you want to bull-shit with your compadres or be slightly interested in a sports game - this is your bar. Besides, it's on Ninth St. so if you decide it's too crowded (not often the case) or you just don't like it, you can just walk to the next one without losing much of your insobriety in the process. Clutch.
Review Source:Oh, wow! Â Finally. Â After being in Durham 2 years and looking for a real burger joint, we found it yesterday. Â Extra delicious and excellent service. Â We never understood the hype around Only Burger (went there 3 times before I gave up), but I doubt you'll be disappointed if you try this place. Â The fries are super crispy and yummy (not like the burned and mushy ones from OB). Â But I'll point out 2 things. Â 1- fries are extra (only $1.99), not included as it sounded from when we placed the order, and 2- chips are included (yummy Miss Vickie's brand). Â We'll be going back!
Review Source:The food and drinks were good but the service not so much. We got tots on fire (really good) and I had a garden burger. Also good were my friends BLT and the grilled cheese/tomato soup.
But service was slow and not very friendly. We waited and waited for refills and for people to come see if we were alright- ended up flagging staff down twice. The kicker- we ordered 5 shots and asked for a coke chaser and they charged us for the soda. That's never happened before
I don't eat beef, so I unfortunately have never had a Dain's burger. Â But a lot of my friends will argue (quite heatedly at times) that Dain's is the best burger in the Triangle (or in Durham at least). Â I have no dog in the Bull City Burger vs. Dain's vs Only Burger etc. fight, but I really do enjoy Dain's.
The Good:
* There are a lot of good vegetarian options for a burger place. Â They have a great veggie burger, and the toppings are really good, so it's easy to make your own. Â Plus, the tots are amazing. Â Also have a grilled cheese sandwich.
* The tots are great! Â Either as the ring of fire or by themselves.
* Quite good beer selection - local and otherwise.
* Great atmosphere for a small bar - it's cozy and friendly. Â A great place to meet a friend for drinks.
The Bad:
* The pirogies are awful. Â I think they came out of a bag, and even at that weren't well cooked. Â I could barely force them down, and that's saying something coming from someone who loves potatoes and cheese.
* It's SMALL inside. Â This adds to atmosphere, but it also makes it somewhat awkward to go there with a group, especially if you're planning to eat around dinner time. Â Often you end up awkwardly waiting and hovering over people who look like they're done eating to see if they'll leave their booths or tables - or eating with strangers (which I don't mind, but it can be awkward if you have two 4 person parties trying to cram into a 6-person table.
Living down the street, Dain's has won itself over as my preferred bar that I could stumble home from, no matter the time of day. The combination of a simple menu with quality food, good beer list, and attentive staff makes you confident they're doing what they enjoy without projecting a false pretense of what you should expect. My only complaint is the Tots on Fire are good, but they disappear quickly when put in front of me.
Review Source:Great hang with excellent hamburgers, hotdogs, and other assorted bar foods. I recommend the Dainer. it has everything you would ever desire in a burger. Skip the fries and get the tots. They aren't anything fancy but they are crisp and delicious. Lots of bottles and a decent selection of drafts.
Review Source:Very cool ambiance, and I like their early 90's soundtrack.  It seems to be a big 10 bar with all the paraphernalia up, so that's cool (go IU!).  Concerning the food, it was good, but it could be better.  I've had their defibrillator, and although it was good the hot dog  and chili kind of overpowered everything else, so although there was hamburger, cheese, and bacon all I really tasted was a chili dog. I also had their tots on fire, and although good I probably won't get again. I think the tots would have been much better if they were sweet potato tots, but that could just be me.  I would say this is a very good bar, with so-so bar food.
Review Source:First off, It's good to know I'm in Eagle Country while eating here, nothing puts me at ease more quickly. The menu is clear and easy so everyone is satisfied and can order quickly. The beer menu is extensive and the staff knows it well and always has recommendations.
it would be nice to see a fish sandwich option and the salad could be approved upon. I wouldn't mind paying a few extra $ for a salad that would fill me up.
But I love this place. Whenever my girlfriend and I are thinking of easy a place to eat and drink Dain's tops the list.
Dain's is great. Good atmosphere, nice beer selection and most importantly awesome food.
The Dainer is awesome, nice thick Burger with a nice thick slice of bacon. Also not to be missed the Pierogis (One of few places in Durham, maybe the only place you can get them!) and the Ring of Fire tots. You may be tempted to get the fries, but trust me get the tots. Service is also usually pretty great. Do it you won't be sorry.
I love Dain's. It is hands down my favorite local bar here in Durham. So yes, I guess this review is not without some bias...
But seriously, this bar has got everything you would want in your go-to local watering hole--an extensive microbrews list (including numerous local brews), deep wooden booths, random paraphernalia on the walls, friendly service, and a chill bearded owner. Add in some kick ass trivia, Saturday brunch, and support for the now famous Doughman race and you've just gone above and beyond, my friend!
I've been here for everything including Monday night football, trivia, brunch, lunch, dinner, meeting up with old friends, and sharing beers with the best of friends, and I've had a great time on each of those occasions.
Food wise, the burgers are solid with "The Defibrillator" (made famous on Man vs. Food) clearly being the grandaddy of them all. The tots are amazing and go with any main dish, while you can wash it all down with some Oreos and milk (how awesome is that?). Brunch wise, I've gotten the chilaquiles a couple of times (my staple brunch order wherever it's offered), and have always left full and happy. The portion is more than generous, the salsa verde is popping, and the eggs are done right. Whatever you choose to chow down on, Dain's has you covered in terms of delightful brews to polish it off with. Dogfish Head? Lagunitas? Abita? Highland? Duck Rabbit? Triangle? Great Divide? New Belgium? A hearty yessir to all of the above and many, many more.
I think I love Dain's even more after writing about it.
When i'm having a bad day and craving some comfort food, Dain's is always one of the first places I think of because I am IN LOVE with their grilled cheese. Â I have experimented with a mixture of cheeses and breads, but the pimento, swiss, and cheddar on rye is by far the best combo ever! Â Plus, who doesn't love tater-tots??!?!? Â The staff are always friendly and knowledgable, and they have a good selection of beer for the beer lovers. Â I did not give it 5 stars because besides their grilled cheese and burgers, their other food is your typical bar food and nothing to write home about. Â But definitely try the grilled cheese :)
Review Source:If you want a really great burger in a laid back place, this is where to go.
I was starving when I got there. Not much on the menu and the ambience is that of a small local bar, but I was not disappointed. My burger was huge and cooked just perfectly. A lot of free toppings and plenty of others to choose from. I was stuffed and happy when I left. Best burger I have had out in awhile would definitely eat there again. Good service too.
I can't say enough good things about Dain's Place but here's a start at why this place will always be considered our go to place...
Staff/Servers: Â Always friendly and prompt. Â You get the feeling that you are family or a close friend and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Â They are pretty good about changing TV channels to whatever sports folks want to watch.
Beer/Wine: Full bar with a huge selection of great beers. Â Always local & regional beers on tap. Â Even their wine is good; there's not much to choose from but it's tasty!
Food: Â I WANT TO EAT IT ALL! Â In my opinion, Dain's has the best bar food in Durham. Â If you don't order a burger, shame on you! Â The burgers are amazing and perfectly cooked. Â I prefer a medium rare burger and they always deliver a beautifully pink inside. Â Tons of toppings are available but will quickly increase the cost of your burger. Â You will spend about $10 for a fully dressed sandwich but it is totally worth it. Â Be adventurous and chose tots over fries; the tots are killer delicious. Â I also love the homemade mozzarella triangles with dain's marinara sauce. Â
I haven't tried Saturday brunch yet but I only hear great things. Â Oh and if you make it in on a Monday night you can add Dain's homemade Meat Sauce and spaghetti to your selections.
Dain's Place deserves 5 stars for their consistency, friendliness, great bar food and neighborhood feel.
You know the place you go to once, and it just feels like home? The servers are friendly, the patrons are decent, the atmosphere is mellow and the food is great? Well thats Dain's Place, our neighborhood bar.
The burgers here are great, and the even have oreos and milk for desert! Full bar and the beer selection is more than adequate.
One more thing that really speaks a ton about this place and the kind of establishment they are running. If you are familiar with this area, and spend enough time on ninth street, or the Durham Farmers Market, you will know the man with the longish grey hair who happily plays his guitar for all the passers by. Well he came in and sat down next to us at the bar didn't speak a word and was served oreos and milk. I got the attention of the bartender and asked him if I could cover his meal. I was surprised to find out that my offer was unnecessary because Dain's Place already takes care of him. I wont lie, this brought a tear to my eye, and made me really appreciate where I live and the wonderful people we have around us.
Sometimes it is more than the food, drinks, deserts, or service. This is a top notch business who cares about their neighborhood and the people who reside within. It is a bonus that their food is awesome!
Well done Dain's Place, well done!
PS, Try the Dainer with tots, you wont be disappointed.
PSs, Opened for Saturday morning breakfast.
Went here for dinner last night and fell in love. Our friends have been raving about their burgers and we finally decided to stop in. I love places with unique charm and this has it. Loved the pennies behind the bar and the frames filled with pins and buttons etc...but my favorite was the giant wheel of matchbox cars.
Got magic Hat on tap and it was nice and cold and delicious. Service was quick and pleasant. The burger was big and all of the topings on it were fresh. Â The burger was so juicy and cooked perfectly. It was absolutely delicious. Â The tots were amazing too. I'm a BIG tots fan and they hit the spot.
Was a little on the expensive side for a burger and fries/tots but it was well worth it to me. Will definitely be stoping in again!
The embodiment of what a neighborhood bar should be: low-key, great beer selection, cute and attentive bartenders, greasy yet delicious pub fare. Try the Tots of Fire, you won't regret it. Actually, you might later, but you will enjoy the hell out of them at the time. Outdoor seating is at a premium here, but well worth it on a nice spring day. And the man himself, Dain, is delightful.
Downside: the biker dudes that regularly and LOUDLY roll up and park out in front on their Harleys to go to the biker bar next door.
I LOVE Dain's! I have never once been disappointed at Dain's Place whether I go there looking for a great meal, a few drinks, a basket of tater TOTS, some TRIVIA fun, or even BREAKFAST! It is by far my favorite place in all of Durham. Â It is full of friendly staff and service, delicious food, tons of beer, and a great atmosphere. Â It's hard not to feel at home at a place like Dain's.
It has amazing BURGERS. Â So good I eat one at least once a week. Â They are a great size, cooked just as ordered, with lots of topping selections. Â The BEER menu is also one of the best I have seen in Durham. Â They have a selection of drafts, and over 100 bottled beers which are all from US microbreweries (with the exception of 3). Â They also get seasonal selections which if you are anything like me are great to try a new beer. Â
Dain's Place now also has Saturday BRUNCH and I can honestly say that it is the best breakfast I have ever had. I have gone almost every Saturday since they started breakfast back in august and everything has been extremely delicious. Â The menu changes about monthly so I am always excited to try something new. Â Some breakfast items have included, pumpkin pancakes, ricotta lemon pancakes, breakfast burger (a sausage on a grilled English muffin with gouda, bacon, and pepper jelly), breakfast burger 2 (an open-faced sausage on a sweet potato biscuit with gouda, bacon, and apple butter), French-style homemade donuts, Bananas foster pancakes, a yummy sandwich (prosciutto, goat cheese, fig jam, and arugula on sourdough bread---amazing), chilaquiles, and a variety of other Mexican breakfast options and all for around $9. Everything is amazing so you MUST go and try it for yourself. Â
Every Wednesday night Dain's has Bar TRIVIA which my group of friends and I go to every week. Â If you win, you get a $25 bar tab!
So you should definitely try Dain's. Â I can't think of a better place to be :). Â Who knows, you may end up like me and show up at least twice a week.
This is a great place to get good beer and one of the best tater tots. Â As you can see from the photo gallery, Dain's Place offers delicious sweet, chili, and jalapeno topped tater tots. Â Forget calories count and order it, it's worth it.
I had a Dain's burger before and also had their chicken sandwich. Â Both were cooked right and came out at perfect temperature. Â Bartenders and wait staffs are all courteous and friendly, make sure your beer is flowing and stomach is full.
Place is pretty small and no reservation, so prepare to wait a while to get a table.
Love Dain's! I come here once a week on average for trivia, but may bump up that average because of Saturday's brunch... Have two friends who religiously go to Dain's multiple times a week and they invited me to the Saturday morning special. I was blown away! The whole menu looks amazing, but we only got to try three things. I got the yummy sandwich...there is no better word to describe it! Butter toasted sourdough hugging prosciutto, fig jam, goat cheese and arugula. Perfect blends of salty and sweet! One of my friends got the cake doughnut french toast with chocolate syrup and poached pears, also fantastic! The other friend got the breakfast burger II, and normally I don't like hamburgers, but this one was open faced on a homemade sweet potato roll with cheese and bacon. Mmm.....
The servers are awesome, the beer selection great, the best (extra crispy tots), and now amazing breakfast to boot. Where will Dain's awesomeness end?!
When Morgan Spurlock spoke at Duke, he asked the audience where to get the best burger in Durham. This was the consensus. I really hope Spurlock ate here; I'm sure he would not be disappointed.
The more I eat here, the more I like it. Big, juicy burgers. I always go for cheddar and sweet chili. Their cheese is always melted and their chili is probably the best I've had. Their toppings list is just great.
Fries just out the frier. Always crispy. They go very well with the spicy mustard sauce they have at the table.
The place just has  nice atmosphere too.
Be aware that the place fills up quickly, getting a table here on the weekend (especially with a large group) can be difficult.
Oh, sweet heavens! Bless your little heart, Dain's!
The veggie burger is kick ass, I couldn't kid you if I wanted to. The tots are a perfect complement, though I will admit that I have never had the guts to get them on fire.
The atmosphere is great if you can find a seat and the beer selection is spot-on. These people know exactly what deserves to be on tap.
I never go quite as often as this place merits, which is such a terrible shame. But when I'm craving a seriously great burger, this is the place to be. I also appreciate their grilled cheese sandwich - the freedom to pick three cheeses yourself? Brilliant and much appreciated.
All in all, this place is hard to beat.
If you're looking for a GREAT burger, a HUGE beer selection and a relaxed vibe, try Dain's. You will not regret it.
I seriously have never had a better burger than their signature, "The Dainer". Dain himself is usually manning the bar (the big guy with the beard) and if you're having trouble deciding on which of their 100+ beers to enjoy, he's got some great suggestions. The place is small making it perfect for a date or for a meal out with a small group of friends.
If you don't eat here, you're missing out.
I have to admit that the reason why I rounded up for Dain's Place was the ambiance. I LOVE how adorably quirky Dain's is and how it's dimly lit, but perfectly so. I like the whimsical wall décor and the cozy booths. Definitely want to come back here again - especially because I haven't had the burgers, which is what it's famous for. :O
I got the steak soup and cheese & potato perogies with my roommate to share. They were definitely very filling, so we got quite a good value for our food. (My roommate did comment, however, that the perogies would've probably tasted the same if we bought them frozen. Haha). That said, I really enjoyed the perogies ... even though there were only 5 pieces. =( The steak soup was interesting and good, but since I don't like Mexican food all that much (which it reminded me of), I was not a huge fan of it. I definitely still drank it and enjoyed it, but I wouldn't get it again.
The service was really good, too; they were really accommodating when we rushed in all breathless and said that we needed to be able to order and eat within an hour.
My wife and I are in from out of town. Â Went here based on reviews on yelp and after looking at their beer list. Â I wanted a really good burger and were meeting a local friend for some beers. Â This place did not disappoint.
The inside is pretty small and seating is "you get what you can grab". Â Thankfully it was not very busy when we went. Â They have a nice interior for a bar, it wasn't very dark and the seating was comfortable. Â The beer list is light on the tap side, but heavy on the bottle side. Â I was able to get a great Allagash Dubbel and later a session seasonal.
The food was really good for what you could mistake as a beer specific place. Â They have a pretty descent menu. Â You can pick a hot dog, burger or chicken breast and then load it up with free condiments and priced toppings. Â The burger was cooked well and my toppings were excellent (cheddar, grilled onions, chipotle mayo and cholula). Â My wife had the BLT and she said it was excellent. Â It had three slices of bread, tons of bacon, huge slices on tomato and fresh ice burg lettuce. Â Our friend had the grilled cheese with three different cheeses on it and said it was also excellent. Â The bread was crunchy on the outside with a good butter coating and the cheese was al metled well.
The wait staff was overly attentive, very friendly and also really funny. Â They make you feel like you are a regular from the second you come in. Â
I would suggest stopping here for a build your own burger and a great selection of non-standard beers.
I decided to go check this place out from Yelp reviews and the fact that it was mentioned on Man vs. Food only made things that much better. I knew the place was small, so I wondered what seating would be like at lunch time, but since it was a Tuesday I thought we'd be OK, and we were. It's on 9th Street in Durham near Duke's East campus, so there wasn't much parking at all. It was a pretty nice day so we sat outside. I think there are 3 tables to eat at outside and they are kind of the picnic style tables.
There was just one person covering all the tables in the restaurant, including the bar, but we still had great, prompt service. After reading some reviews me and my 2 friends decided to get the Dainer. No regrets at all - one of the best burgers I've ever had. Nice, thick patty with thousand island dressing and perfectly cooked bacon. I'd definitely get it again. My friend got the tots, so I tried just a couple off of his plate and they didn't blow me away or anything like that. They were still good tots, but I didn't feel like they were any more special than others. Â
The burger is a bit pricey. It cost me about $14, tip included, to get the Dainer and a Coke (chips come with the burger). One funny thing I noticed - the menu says the burger comes with a pickle spear. It does, but it's an inch long gherkin on the side!
I have been to Dain's Place quite a few times. I love the relaxed vibe, the excellent beers on tap and of course, the perogies! I haven't tried their burgers yet, because I usually fill up on the "munchies", but I am sure they are awesome.
Also, the Homer Simpson quote on the fridge always makes me smile! Â :)
I am a huge fan of Dain's Place! My go to neighborhood bar/eatery in Durham.
Only downer is that is very small..but it adds to the charm of Dain's.
The burgers are great and will remedy any caloric deficit that you may have in your diet....The Defribulator is the money! But be warned, be very hungry.
With or after your meal you can enjoy a beer from their wide selection. I have always been impressed with their draft selection. I recently enjoyed a Terrapin Moo Hoo, The Carver Sweet Potato Lager will always have my heart. I even introduced my roommate to it and he loved it.
The ownership and service there has always been friendly. Wednesday night is trivia and the weekends can be pretty busy. However, we met a friend a few weekends ago on a Saturday night and it was pretty chill.
The crowd there is very mixed in every since of the word. Popped collars and cardigans can easily mingle with piercings and tattoos. It is a people-friendly establishment.
Finally made it to the stomping grounds and visited Dain's. Decent selection of beers. Carver sweet potato beer, pretty decent for a light, and Brooklyn's Black Chocolate stout for a dark. Smutty nose is a great porter. Little disappointed they ran out of Terrapin's Moo Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout on tap on a Friday...hopefully they restock often.
Like how they add the Corona and extras in a smaller font, as a side note, if you really have to order one of those...
Tots live up to the fame. Great way to get a basket of fried goodness. Especially enticing with a side of guac (think ketchup container cup size.)
Service decent. Ladies' room entertaining. Good luck finding parking on 9th. Â Oh and yes, tiny booths, get comfy, people will encroach on your space.
The food is excellent, the beers are good, though the place is a little small.
I came out here for a trivia night, which, due to Dain's size, seems to be a little hectic (it's tough to get a seat, and once you do, you definitely do not want to give it up). Â The size of the place is small, so it may not be the most conducive to trivia as a whole.
That being said, the food is excellent. Â I split a burger and had some pierogies. Â Both were excellent and relatively cheap. Â The pierogies were stuffed quite well, and the burger was cooked perfectly. Â Â Their other food (which I sampled a little bit of) is also quite good, especially the tater tots.
Their beer selection is also quite good, with a variety of good micro brews and smaller brewing companies. Â The prices on these are also quite good.
Overall a little cramped, but a nice place to grab lunch. Â Also, apparently my trivia team is really good at trivia :)
So I get this email from my co worker. Â Dude. Â There's a place that was on Man vs. Food and we need to do a tour of it.
I work from home, and live in Wake Forest. Â So this was a 45m drive for me to get to the area. Â We set up a friday meeting and headed that way.
I stared at their monster burger that comes with 1/2 lb patty, chili, and a hot dog on it. Â I debated it and almost went for it but I just wasn't that hungry.
So instead I got the 'Dain's Burger', and I was not disappointed. Â There are very few 'good burger' places that are local down near Wake Forest. Â DOn't know why, but this was worth the drive. Â I'm now trying to figure out how to work this into business lunches as it's not that far from the Triangle.
We got in at 11:30 and it appears we beat the rush, as we walked out about 12:15 Duke must have broke for lunch because it went from being empty to full really, really fast.
As a Carolina grad I rarely strayed off of Franklin Street and certainly not into enemy territory up in Durham. Â Over the years I've gotten a bit better with my Durham visits but stopping in at Dains tonight had me feeling like a special forces paratrooper being dropped behind enemy lines! Â Despite all the Dookies about, the only real danger at Dain's is wrecking your diet and healthy eating habits! Â
Inside Dain's you'll find some tightly packed booths, hi-tops and bar stools but hang in there my tater-tot loving friend because the wait will be worth it! Â I ordered up the two most absolutely, caloric items on the menu: the Defribalator burger along with the Tots on Fire appetizer. Â The Defribalator was covered on Man vs. Food, we're talking about a 1/2 lb burger with slaw, sweet chili, bacon, cheddar and drumroll please... Â a split hotdog! Â Seriously bad and good for you at the same time. Â Thankfully I split this bad boy with my friend April. Â As good as the sandwich was, for some reason the bun stood out to me as really good. Â Moving on to the appetizer, we're talking about really crunchy tots covered again in cheddar, sweet chili and jalapenos. Oh my this was a ridiculously tasty app but you know you're doing some damage to yourself! Â
Tied in with the great food, good beer and friendly peeps, I totally gotta give Dain's Place a big thumbs up. Â Even after our group took a trivia beatdown tonight. Â The only saving grace was that the trivia winner was the team of UNC Yelpers led by John L who crushed all the competition... Â Rock on Dain's Place, rock on!
"Durham bar with great burgers: sides a bit pricey but good value"
Came by here for lunch since I've heard so much about the great burgers. Â I'm pleased to report the reputation was not undeserved- my burger was quite good. Â I got the regular 8 oz angus burger with cheddar cheese and a few fixin's (ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles). Â It was well-done yet quite juicy and flavorful. Â I'm sure it was NOT made "fresh" when I asked, as it must have come out on the plate fully dressed within 5 minutes of when I placed my order. But I don't blame them for planning ahead a few burgers, and again, it tasted great.
Phil G. warned in his Yelp review against getting the melted cheddar, so I specifically just asked for "cheddar", and it was just right- melted, but not "runny." Â Thanks Phil!
A friend suggested I get the tater tots, too, and the MOUNTAIN of tater tots I got was impressive indeed. Â Very crisp and tasty, too- I literally couldn't finish them (rare indeed!).
Some of the other reviews noted the pictures in the lady's room... the ones in the men's room are rather amusing- like a woman looking "surprised" with her eyes pointed at, well...
Overall, happy with my lunch. Â The price was a bit on the high end- my burger with cheese was $7, and I paid an extra $2 for tater tots. Â With tax and tip, the meal came out to ~$11.50, which is on the high end for a burger and "fries." Â That said, I think the VALUE was good- the quality was very high, and the food was literally more than I could finish, even after coming hungry.
Quick warning- the Yelp site says there's outdoor seating, but this seating amounts to two tiny 2-person tables...
Pretty cool place. I've been twice - once to eat at lunch and the other night to drink. Drinking is definitely the highlight of this place.
They carry more craft beers than most other bars in Durham - maybe even Tylers! They have 3 fridges dedicated to the bottles and about 4-5 on tap. Better yet, the bartenders know the beers too! I hate it when I go to  a new bar and there's a whirlwind of possibilities and the bartender can't help me out. Not at Dain's! This guy knew his stuff.
It's located on Ninth St, so if you want to "sit" outside you better get there early. There are only two metal cafe tables, which are absurdly adorable for a bar, but seriously uncomfortable. Otherwise, you'll be one of the few who have to stand around waiting for someone else to get up. It's probably better just to sit inside at the bar and talk it up with the bartender.
Go for the beer, skip the food. And I bet it's pretty good for trivia, I'll have to stop by sometime. Anybody want to go?
p.s. Go to the bathroom while you're there it's pretty cool. In the ladies' room they have pictures of the David and the scientific information about each part of his body. Each. Part. Of. His. Body. :)
I took my dad here before the Duke-Virginia Tech game a couple weeks ago. Â It was a bit tight quarters as it was packed with the pre-game crowd, but we had no problem getting a couple seats at the bar. Â
The bartender was very knowledgeable and was more than happy to let me sample a couple of their beers on tap to make sure I liked what I ordered. Â I forget the name of the beer I ended up choosing (I think it was a Maryland brew as it had Terp in the name), but it was fantastic and refreshing. Â
The food was really good, too! Â They have a long list of toppings (grouped by whether they are free or cost a little extra) that you can add to your burger or hot dog. Â They also have veggie burgers and an awesome salad far beyond what you would expect from a dive bar. Â It had strawberries, sunflower seeds, an awesome dressing and good spring mix lettuce. Â You could also choose from chips or fries as a side. Â It's always nice to have variety. Â
This seems like a good place to hang out with friends watching a Duke game, and I hear that their trivia nights are great. Â Hope to be back for one soon.
I went here for lunch and it was busy, but not terribly so. Â Dain's is pretty small, so I really wouldn't recommend going if you have more than a party of 4. Â They have an awesome selection of beer and specialty sodas too. Â I'm a sucker for vintage sodas. Â Root beer tastes so much better in a bottle than in a can! Â
I ordered their 1/4 lb hot dog with "tots on fire". Â You know a place is legit when they serve tater tots for lunch. Â "Tots on fire" consists of tater tots topped with sweet/spicy chopped jalepenos, melted nacho cheese and need I say more? Â The hot dog was good, but not mind-blowingly so. Â I compare all hot dogs to Costco hot dogs, which I think are the best. Â All others just pale in comparison. Â Basic toppings for both hot dogs and burgers are free - like ketchup, mustard, tomatoes, etc. Â Sauerkraut, cheese, etc. are extra. Â
Service was a tad slow, so beware.  Since the place is so small, not too many people can fit in there = they can't exactly have that many orders going on.  So I was surprised that it took them awhile to cook my food.  Especially when it's just a hot dog.  Not enough of a reason  to keep me from coming back though :)
Great Hamburgers, good beer selection, friendly people and all on 9th St across from the mortuary known as George's Garage. Â
They even have fried peirogies on the menu.. with sour cream! Do you have any idea how hard that is to find in the South? Â The only thing I would change .... get a different brand from Ms. T's
If I lived in Durham, this would be on my once a week list.
