Awesome location on Main St. right near Brighleaf Square. I work in downtown Durham and play in a kickball league on Sundays who meets at Devine's after games, so I've been there  few times.  Devine's is a classic sports bar, burgers, fries, TV's and beer.  They have a decent outdoor patio with a corn hole and sometimes there is live music, although I haven't been there to see it yet.

The food is decent, and they often have good local beers on tap. Their burgers are probably the best on the menu, with a side of cheesy fries. A nice, healthy lunch :-)

Staff is very attentive, even when they seem to be short staffed. It's never busy during the week at lunch, so you'll never have trouble finding a table.  Stop by sometime. With the warm weather approaching, you will be able to start enjoying their outdoor patio. Although they do not have the outdoor bar like Alivia's this is still a cool place to hang out!

Love the double bar and the patio.

I go here to watch basketball. Lots of TVs, good beer on tap and always seating for my friends. The food is bar food so I am not usually here for that reason but it is definitely a go to for game viewing!

Best wings in Durham.  Large, crispy, juicy, the way they should be.  The second best burgers in town.  If it's not crowded, they are very accommodating on changing channels to the sporting event you wish to watch.  The place is bordering on dive status though.  I do like the place.

I came to Devines on the strength of the burger reviews, and I was not disappointed.

I had the Cajun Burger with some mayo and was extremely pleased. They really nail the toasted bun, which I've always maintained is a key ingredient of the perfect burger.

The fries were good, if a bit generic. Nothing that some salt and pepper won't fix!

Also PBR bottles were $1, prompting me to order 2 despite looking forward to an afternoon full of work.

Service was prompt and friendly. My only complaints are the country-heavy soundtrack (completely subjective) and the low light that prevented me from getting a picture that truly captured my burger's deliciousness.

Also, seems like a good place to catch your sporting event of choice. Bonus points for repping the Hurricanes.

I am such a jerk. I'm guilty of talking trash about Devine's without ever giving it a shot. I mean, its Main Street/Brightleaf location is awesome, but you can do a literal side-by-side patio comparison with Alivia's--and Alivia's will obviously win because of the fire pits, outdoor bar, heck--even the paintjob. But Devine's deserves a chance.

While not as pretty as Alivia's, the patio is really comfortable. There's a TV out there, a cornhole set, and sometimes live music, too. The other patrons were friendly and warm; the servers are attentive; it's gay-friendly--all good (GREAT) things.

As for the food, I had a really solid bacon cheeseburger with a side of deliciously crispy fries. I was really bummed that my tomato slice was way more pink than red, which is inexcusable during tomato season. What gives?

Despite the tomato shortcoming, I was pleasantly surprised with Devine's and apologize for all the trash I talked in the past.

I've been here a few times.  The wings are excellent, the service is pretty good, and it has a nice, laid back atmosphere.  Great place to watch a Duke game too.

We went to Devines on Christmas Eve for dinner with our 7 year old.  He and my husband got the wings and cheese fries, while I got the tuna sandwich and a Guiness.  The sandwich was tasty though the bread was toasted a bit too hard.  My guys thought the wings were delicious and loved the fries.  We really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the waitress was friendly and helpful.  We'll definitely go back here.  They have gluten free options for the guys and dairy free for me.  That's a plus.  I would give it 4 stars but my little guy insisted that I give it 5.

I would like to commend Gene Devine and his staff, and all the volunteers for the fund raiser that  they put on for Tony Odom on August 13th.

I stand by my previous review overall, but a few things to note.
    (1) Last time I was there I was craving chicken fingers and was disappointed with theirs -- they tasted frozen food-esque.
    (2) The condiments didn't help: watery ranch, questionable honey mustard, and mayoish-tasting bleu cheese. (I ran the whole gauntlet of them looking for something workable and came up emptyhanded.)
    (3) Lastly, I think the beer prices are on the spendy side: $4.50 draft is on the high end of comparable bars in the area, and close enough to the Joyce, the Fed and other bars that I tend to go to the others when I'm just in the market for a good place to get a beer.

Burgers, onion rings & sandwiches are good (see earlier review), and of course a good place to watch games.

I'm surprised that this place is rated as high as it is.  I guess if you are looking for a place to watch the game, then Devine's is your spot.  If you are just looking for a place to have a cocktail or beer with friends, you should go elsewhere.  When I was there, I had to pay a $2 cover to access an empty place, and there was a $15 credit card minimum.  A friend tried to order a drink with a lime, but the bar was out of limes.

I do not plan to return to Devines.

Fun place to grab a drink, eat some bar food, and watch a game on tv. It's your standard neighborly sports bar.

I have to agree with Dave L's posting.
Wife and I originally wanted to try out The Federal but it was packed and we were hungry. So 2 doors down we sat and ate outside at Devines.

Inside - Typical watering hole, nothing that would impress the lady. Does have variety of TV's so probably great place to watch the game.

Outside is where we placed ourselves. Nothing fancy here but nice space out front of the restaurant with quite a few tables.

It was Thirsty Thursday (so the sign said) and when we inquired about the specials...we found out there really wasn't any. Guess it is just that...a Thirsty Thursday...so um...well...drink here...just because.

I had a Guinness which wasn't bad, but I've had better. Honestly though, I wasn't expecting it to flow from the Irish Springs here...it was good for what it was, I'll leave it at that.

Wife had a Pepsi...just had to throw that in. Was tasty she said. This is when I told her of my new Yelp hobby (at least for today...hopefully I can keep up the momentum). She pulled out her BB (Im an Iphone guy myself) and read my Goodberry's review and promptly pointed out my spelling error. Dang..I try!)

Back to subject. Both of us had Burgers. Fantastic burgers and inexpensive. Pleasant surprise. Fries needed some salt.

Service was excellent. Very friendly and on top of it. All in all very chill place.

Great place to drink.  Wings are great.  Cheap drinks, two can drink all afternoon and stumble home with a 30$ tab.

Devine's is a great downtown Durham hangout in a great location, just next to Brightleaf Square. There are lots of TVs showing sports, great beer specials, good service, and cheese fries made with Cheez Wiz...

Seriously, the cheese fries are pure, sweet, processed-cheese heaven! But I digress. Personally, I love to sit in the back room, behind the bar: it's more intimate, you've got a great view of the plasma TVs above the bar, and you'll usually be sharing the room with the owner and a couple of regulars having drinks.

Last time I went to Devine's it was the Monday night Panthers/Buccaneers game. There were probably 25-30 people there; not packed but not empty either, but every time the Panthers made a big play, the whole place would erupt into cheers.

To me, one question defines a good sports bar: during a big game, how many of the people there are actually watching? At Devine's, the answer is everyone.

Nutshell - Truly local Durham sports bar that should appeal to any Duke fan.

Devine's is a great little sports bar located right next to Brightleaf Square.  There are plenty of televisions showing a variety of different events.  You have your choice of bar, booth, table or outdoor seating.  The burgers are actually pretty darn tasty for a sports bar, though the fries leave me wanting.

    What I like
    ==============
    1.  The burgers are really good.
    2.  Outdoor seating is plentiful and spacious.  Great lunch place on a nice day.
    3.  Located in downtown Durham and is really a local place.  That kind of thing appeals to me.

    What could be better
    ==============
    1.  More Terps coverage. ;)  Sorry, had to go there.
    2.  Sometimes the service can be a little slow.  (x2 if you sit outside.)
