Mike and I took our brand-spankin'-new bikes for a 15-ish mile ride on the Arkansas River Trail several weeks ago. After our biking adventure, we got our dog, Roxanne, and hobbled on over to Dugan's Pub for a well-deserved beer and some lunch. We were promptly greeted and let in the side entrance of the patio, and Roxanne got several head scritches from our server.
I typically order the chicken strips - the beer batter is seasoned just right and results in a super crispy crust and the chicken is perfectly tender and juicy; you really should try them. This time, however, I decided to branch out a little and opted for the Anaheim Turkey Sandwich (smoked turkey, Anaheim chile peppers, melted jalapeño jack cheese, sliced avocado, and chipotle mayo on wheat bread), fries, and my absolute favorite beer of the moment, Boulevard Single-Wide I.P.A. Mike was good and ordered the chef salad (what a show off, with his healthy eating habits). Roxanne clearly thought the salad was hers because as soon as it was set down on the table she wanted to snatch a bite of the abundant turkey and ham. She got one french fry instead and seemed content with that.
While we were there, we saw two other dogs with their humans, and everyone was exceedingly well behaved, just chillin' on the patio.
Very disappointed. Â Had the mushroom appetizers. Â They were served on a big plate with wilted lettuce and a handfull of small stuffed mushrooms. Â Mushrooms were okay but the presentation killed the moment. Â Had their Rueben. The corn beef was tender but not much taste to it. Â The burger came with chips, so you had to pay extra for the fries. Â Who serves a hamburger with chips? Â When the wait staff weren't tending tables, they'd go back and grab a bit to eat and then come back out and check on tables. Â I think they forgot about us after they served our meal - had to ask for our check. Â Will not be going back. Â P.S. Â The inside of the restaurant was nice; it has a fireplace and a nice bar area.
Review Source:Actually, I give it 2.5 stars. Just a few steps from the Hampton Inn where I was staying for business, the location was great, and the service was friendly. That's about the extent of the good things I can say. The Guiness pour wasn't particularly creamy, and the food was bland. The atmosphere was definitely about as pseudo-Irish as you could get.
Review Source:We were in Little Rock for a night and since our flight got in so late, our dining options were somewhat limited. Â After reading a few reviews on Yelp, we decided that an Irish pub would do. Â The inside of Dugan's is pretty much your typical bar look and feel-with maybe a couple accents to make it appear to be "Irish", but in my opinion, calling it an Irish Pub is a bit of a stretch. Â The beer selection wasn't bad, the service was ok, and the food was decent bar fare. Â We had the Fish & Chips and the Spicy Chicken Strips with Onion Rings. Â The Onion Rings were excellent but other than that, there was nothing to really rave about. Â However, compared to the lunch we had at Bosco's the next day, this was much better. Â Bottom line-its a typical bar with typical bar food, if that's your scene then stop in for a few.
Review Source:This might be the first review that I'm generally torn about what rating to give. I feel like Dugan's could be any where form a 2 star to a 4 star resturant and I could justify any one of those. I'll start with the objective details:
Dugan's is located about two blocks up from the river in a pretty solid location. It claims to be an Irish Pub, and never having been to Ireland or know anything about the Irish culture beside Lucky Charms and Leperchaun in the Hood, I'll press the "i believe" button. The place was immaculate, and pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon. I didn't really see much Irish stuff, but that wasn't my concern; I was starving.
The waiter sauntered over to our table and mumbled through his greeting and our order. We ordered water, and a nacho appetizer. The water arrived at the same time as our nachos, about 10 minutes later. We ordered our main courses before the waiter could dissapear into the air of indifferce that enveloped him. I ordered the bangers and mash, my girlfriend had the corned beef hash. The food was quite good. The bangers and mash came with 5 sausage links (i said it before, and I'll say it again: I never met a sausage I didn't like. I realize how that sounds, but there is no other way to express that sentiment), and a heap of mashed potatos covered in gravy. The hash was a collection of potatos, corned beef, onions, and eggs, and was crispy and delicious. I imagine the food would have been mush better had it been hot. I watched the food come out of the kitchen, and i watched the surly waiter roll silverware for about 12 minutes before he felt it neccesary to bring it to us.
While the restaruant is clean and neat, and the food is solid, this restaurant suffers from the fact that the wait staff seems more adapt at pouting than waiting tables.
Wasn't expecting much after reading reviews and was not disappointed. Â It was as expected and service was pretty good after a little bit of a wait getting initial service. Â Food was good for what it is and the other patrons seemed to be having a good time. Â Not the best Irish Pub in town but not bad either.
Review Source:Two stars for wasted opportunity - I'll explain. Â
The concept at Dugan's is "Irish Pub," yawn. Â Nothing particularly Irish here at all. Â The standard plug-in flouorescents, Guiness and Bass on tap, vaguely darkish wood colors that appear to evoke what Americans would think Ireland looks like. Â Cookie-cutter.
I have been a half-dozen times. Â Service has generally been below average. Â Drinks take too long to be brought from the service bar to the table, servers aren't prompt in getting out menus, tables remain un-bussed, etc. Â Pretty standard issues that will of course come up in a busy, crowded bar/restaurant, it's all really in how you manage and handle the situation - Dugan's manages it pretty weakly in my opinion.
The food is heavily on the battered/deep fried side: chicken strips, beer-battered mushrooms, fried cheese, fried jalapenos. Â Entrees appear to come directly from the Sysco order guide - defrosted classics we've slogged through umpteen times: Southwestern Burger, Nachos, Chicken Caesar Salad, Club Sandwich. Â
The "Irish" menu doesn't veer far from the fryer, offering the obligatory fish and chips (greasy by the way), and a Shepherd's Pie that inexplicably has ground beef in it instead of lamb...
It's a too-big, too-standard, too-frozen-product menu that has been executed sloppily for the most part when I have been around. Â Replace 2/3 of the menu items with fresh, interesting ingredients and create something I want to come back for.
The outdoor seating and well appointed inside bar and room have a nice feel, the kind of place that would be fun to hang out at with friends. Â There's free Wi-Fi, the bartender has password.
Margarita was so-so. Â I know, it's an Irish pub, what did I expect, but I keep hoping.
I tried chicken strips off of appetizer menu; 4 strips, piping hot from the fryer, big and juicy enough for 4 people.
Bartender was attentive, but not much personality or personal service. Â He was polite, but he seemed to consider customers to be little more than paying seat warmers for the amount of attention he gave. Â He wasn't discourteous, just impersonal.
I rated Dugan's with only 2 stars because of my second appitizer, the sausage and cheese tray. Â About two hours after eating it, I had a severe case of food poisioning that lasted late into the night.
I was in LR a couple of weeks ago for work and checked out Dugans since it was on the same block as my hotel, and probably won't go back next time I'm in town for a several reasons.
1. Â Any place that calls itself a pub should have a decent beer selection on tap. Â Dugan's does not. Â
2. Â The punk bartender who wouldn't change the channel on one of the bigger TVs because he said someone else was watching baseball on both of them. Â He offered to change the channel on one of their smaller screens (looked like a 26" or something), but I said no thanks.
3. Â The food was mediocre.. not bad but not good either.
4. Â Two panhandlers asked me for money (one crackhead on the sidewalk and one fratboy-looking guy driving by) during my short walk from the hotel I was staying at.
Hopefully things will improve because I like the location and the interior of the bar.. but as it is right now, the "pub" doesn't have much to offer.
