My friend met me at the airport and on our way back home, we called in a pizza order at Durbin's for pick-up.
Now I'm not the biggest fan of Chicago deep-dish pizza. I'm a West Coaster to the core, and when it comes to pizza, I prefer a thinner crust. But when in Rome--or Chicago, as the case may be--I indulge in this heartier pizza.
We ordered a deep-dish pizza with spinach and mushrooms.
This pizza weighed a ton! It was definitely packed with dough, cheese and sauce.
The toppings were plentiful--though not the tastiest. I think I'm spoiled by the bucketloads of fresh spinach available at home in the salad bowl of the United States in central California. I just found the spinach to be a little bland.
The mushrooms were flavorful though, a welcome change from most pizza shops where you get cardboard mushrooms.
The pizza wasn't exactly the most gourmet you'll find, but for a quick takeaway dinner after a day of traveling, I wasn't about to be picky.
At one time this place was known as Henry's. Â It was a seedy hole in the wall that was always packed with regulars. Â It used to be a place where you could go and have a drink and jaw with the bartenders who tended to be like your mom if your mom was a barfly that said cripes all the time.
A while back they were sold and became Durbins. Â They initially tried to make it a dance place but that went over like a lead balloon. Â Last week when I was in there, they are trying to be more of a pizza joint than a bar.
They have a full bar. Â No dancing was evident as even though it was a saturday night, only about a dozen people were in the place. Â My freind and I had a quesadilla followed by pizza. Â Quesadilla was very good, they didin't skimp on the fillings and the chicken was actually tasty as opposed to the sometimes rubbery chicken you get in some place. Â Pizza was a very good thin crust variety, loaded with toppings and very good.
Took one star away for slow service and the flat beer.
Have never been in this place, but I had the misfortune of experiencing their slice of pizza (A sausage slice and a cheese) at the Palos Friendship Fest - YUCK. Cheap cheese - gummy. If you know what real good cheese is then you've had either Giordano's & Palermo's  which are some of the best. Durbins isnt one of them. Pizza Hut and dare I say Little Caesars is better than this stuff.
