We just had the worst meal I've eaten in a long while.
We went in late - around 8pm. The sign said it closed at 10, so I don't know why it annoyed the staff so much that we walked in. If they wanted to close, they could have just said so. There were three other tables eating food, so we weren't the only ones in the store.
I ordered the enchilada verdes and my friend ordered the rib-eye. The enchiladas seemed to be literally scraped off the plate of another customer. They were cold and piled onto the plate. The steak wasn't a rib-eye. It looked more like an overcooked, skinny t-bone. I had a piece and it was tasteless.
The waiter was rude from the moment we walked in. I wish we had turned around and left. We obviously hit it on the wrong night, but I have no desire to give them another try.
It feels like I'm back in Texas when I walk into El Jaripeo's. The feeling is like all of the small Mexican joints I used to go to when I lived in Texas, the best kind small and great food!!! The room is not like a chain full of some junk placed to make it look real! The food is what makes it real here, simple down to earth Tex Mex at it's best.
Remember to eat well and live well! And please no chains!
There are several El Jaripeos around the metro Indy area, but this is my favorite, mainly because it's close to home.
Here's what I like about El J.: simple decor, fabulously friendly staff and emphasis on good hot food and cold, delicious drinks. I am in no way a margarita fan or regular imbiber, but I love the frozen variety here as much as I love Adobo Grill's tableside-shaken version....it's like an alcoholic slushy, only better because it's super smooth and just sweet enough to go down easily, perhaps too easily! When I drink one, I'm reminded of a childhood fondess: mashing up lime "Pop-Ice" and eating it with a spoon :-)
The salsa is very tasty here and the chips are fresh and crunchy. But, the best part of the mandatory pre-dinner snacking at El J. is the creamy white sauce that comes in a separate dish with the chip basket and salsa - I don't know what's in it, but pairing a dollop of it with a dollop of the red stuff on a single chip makes for a little fiesta in your mouth!
I like everything I've tried here so far, but my personal fave is probably any combo with a chile relleno, tamale or enchilada on it. Also an excellent choice: the vegetarian fajitas or the carnitas.
