Pulling up this Yelp business listing sure did catch me off guard. Why? Well, those first few photos sure don't look like the food that comes out of this kitchen! These moments frozen in time display food that is masterly prepared and presented with with precision on the plate. In reality it generally looks like it was pulled directly from the microwave and half-heartedly tossed onto the waiting dish. Ten years ago Elephant Bar would have been a strong four star rating for me but it struggles to even reach three at this point.
Here's why...
It wasn't until I migrated South that I realized that Rancho Bernardo is a bubble. A bubble full of strip malls and stock restaurants serving the masses. The inability to attract well trained chefs has left this town full of restaurants like Elephant Bar. These places thrive off of coupons delivered to the front door of senior citizens waiting for the next place to save a few bucks. With this being said, the food suffers. I once though that E-Bar had decent ribs... until I actually had a rib cooked correctly. The bad part is that over time it seems to have only become worse. Typically the service is on par with the quality of the food here and the atmosphere almost drains the life from you. Do yourself a favor and get the hell out of RB and see what food actually tastes like - you may be surprised!
They have tried to stay current and update the menu, but for me it just doesn't cut it. For RB this place is a four star, for the rest of the world it lives in the realm of three with the likes of Chilli's and Applebee's.
We live in RB and used to come here pretty often. However over the last 9 months or so, things have really gone down hill. Seems like there has been a big turn over in wait staff and many changes to the menu. Several of our favorite items have disappeared and we do not like the replacements (we did try them). My husband and step father used to ALWAYS (I mean EVERY time) order the ribs, but both say they are no longer baby backs ribs and not good anymore. Service is slow and the quality is gone- at least at this location. Looking for a new, favorite place to take the family and out of town visitors. Hard to find a good family restaurant in this area! Bummed!!
Review Source:For the viewers who said that they were ignored is so spot on! First ones in the place today. Got seated only to wait and wait for one beer and one iced tea. Really? Server came by and said they were 'getting our drinks together'. Um, ok. I got up and went to the restroom; and what did I see? My beer sitting on the bar. Just had to take off the cap and bring a glass. Refills were slow coming for my friends iced tea. We had to ask. Server came back and asked one thing that I had ordered. Remember we were the first table. One other one next to us. And why do they sit you right next to someone else? All four booths were seated like that.
Food is just okay. I wouldn't drive out of my way for it. A bit pricey for the sandwiches. The music is always up too loud. Older bus person walked by our table twice without taking one thing off of it. His tray was empty both passes. Oh, and just one more thing. One of the towel holders in the bathroom was totally empty. Great way to start the day...
Look around and find somewhere nicer to have lunch.
Came here for Wednesday wine specials
A couple of things I have noticed
Slow service in food and drinks
I feel bad for the server, maybe it was not her fault but running a restaurant is a team effort.
It took them 25 minutes for some prepared salad. Apparently it was rocket science.
I probably will not go back.
The menu is extensive and many of the items are great. Â The tomato bisque is one of my favorites. Â The service is hit and miss. Â We've had great service there with manager even stopping by to see how things are going, and we've had servers who disappear for long periods as we wait for drinks and food. Â We ate there last week for lunch and were charged $12 .50 for a glass of wine and a beer and none of us had anything but iced tea. Â Be sure to check that bill before you pay.
Review Source:This was an odd experience because The Elephant Bar is the sort of place I want to like. Â It's pleasant and quiet inside, which is very different from the usual hubbub of other chain restaurants such as Cheesecake Factory and anything ending in -'s. Â
Unfortunately my experience here was underwhelming. Â The food was tasty yet strangely unsatisfying. Â It's odd because the food reminded me of the food sold inside hotel restaurants which has that same
blah" feel. Â My husband and I used the 2 for $20 coupon that came in our mail, and looking at the menu I'm glad we used the coupon because the prices are quite high. Â Expect to spend $13.95 on your main dish without the coupon.
My husband and I shared the chicken lettuce wraps and then he ordered a grilled chicken and pork ribs combo plate and I ordered the chicken marsala. Â Again, everything tasted pretty good and was by no means bland yet we both still left the restaurant hungry. Â In fact, my husband ate most of his plate and half of mine and he was still hungry. Â Not a good sign. Â
So on the one hand I would like to give this place another chance, but on the other hand, I know other places that have a similar non-coupon price and yet I leave full and happy. Â Our server told us there were new menu items coming out but the items he described didn't sound that exciting. Â
Aside from the food, the restaurant had a disused feel to it. Â The hostess was kind enough to seat us as far from the other guests as possible, which was great, but I saw plenty of cobwebs while I dined, which wasn't so great. Â
Bottom line: I know a place in Rancho Bernardo where for $15, you can get a massive wedge salad with a side of the most amazing barbecue beef and you will feel stuffed to the gills, but the place is noisy as hell. Â Choose your priorities. Â
Last note: I honestly wouldn't mind spending a little bit extra, say a 2 for $25 or even 2 for $30 deal, if the food was more satisfying. Â Also, and this is just my random musing, I think it would be awesome if the restaurant took on a more British Colonial attitude and had a menu based on cuisines of British influence. Â The sort of food an author of "Traveling the Ganges with a Tobacco Tin and a Spear" type memoir would eat.
Elephant Bar a good watering hole with a decent happy hour and drink
specials.....the menu has change but still alot of good choices...thank goodness the lamb shank was still on the menu one of my favs it comes 1 or 2 shanks portions.. fall off the bone goodness.... stay hungry my friends....
So disappointed. We had the calamari as an appetizer. Now I know that calamari strips are suppose to be a bit chewy. But these were fried rubber bands.
We had surf & turf for dinner. The steak was supposed to be m/r and it was borderline well done. Now i could live with a miss cook. However, it was also dried out and flavorless. The coconut shrimp were fried so long i could have used them to chisel out of prison. And the grilled prawns were also over cooked and not cleaned. The green beans were practically raw and the mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from powder.
The server was pretty good though. Could have used a 2 minute check back. But he still got a 7 out of 10.
I've had microwave dinners that tasted better. My suggestion, find another restaurant or stay home.
Date night! Â We got a great coupon for 2 for $20. Â We ad the option of sharing the wok fired lettuce wraps or fish tacos or the creme brulee dessert. Â Then you got to pick one entree from a choice of 6: Petite filet, 5 Spice Chicken Arugula salad, Korean Chicken and Ribs, Chicken Marsala, Blackened Tilapia or Crispy Honey Shrimp. Â
We were given a 10 minute wait which was spot on. Â Once seated, we got lots of good attention from Morgan, our server even though he was super busy. Â I ordered a 16oz Blue Moon. Â Speedy and when we old him about our coupon, he wasn't annoyed. Â He just asked what apps we would want so he could get them started. Â We ordered the Wok Fired Lettuce Wraps. Â AHMAZING!!! Â Tender chicken, coconut, macademia nuts in butter lettuce wraps with a mango citrus salsa on the side. Â Super yum and I highly recommend!
We were nervous to get our entrees because the app was so good. Â But even our entrees were good. Â I got the Marsala and I asked for a sub on the mashed potatoes. Â They brought sauteed garlic spinach (yum) and green beans. Â Good stuff. Â Husband got the chicken and ribs (big surprise!), Â with brown rice and sauteed veggies. Â All solid choices. Â
All in all, very very pleased with the app (5 stars) and Morgan (5 stars) and solid 3 1/2 -4 stars on the entrees. Â Definitely worth a visit!
We have been going to the elephant bar for the last 9 years   We usually go at least 2 times a month or more.  Last night's experience was so  bad I don't think we will return.
The service and drinks were great.
The food was terrible - inedible! My wife ordered the SHRIMP AND CHICKEN JAMBALAYA. She tried it and said it tasted like it was spoiled or had been left out for a long time.  I tasted it and agreed.  I usually get that entree but this tasted nothing like the ones I had before.  she sent it back and got the TEMPURA SALMON ROLLS which I had as well.  These also were not as we had remembered them.  I was so hungry I drowned them in soy sauce and continued to eat them.  My wife couldn't eat hers, thought it might taste better at home and she had wrapped it to go.  Our 2 kids then called and asked to bring sushi for them so we ordered 2 more orders of salmon rolls to go.  When we got home and our kids tasted the salmon rolls and both would not eat theirs -they said it tasted "vile" (teenagers).  We don't know what happened to this restaurant - it used to be so good.  There are so many other good restaurants in San Diego.  We will just need to find a new favorite!
I love the happy hour menu! My favorites are the Jose Cuervo $5 margaritas. They're perfect, strong, and tasty. There are so many options for food. I love the Korean beef tacos...they even give you a lil side salad to go with it. I love the chicken lettuce wraps, hamburgers, quesadilla, and ahi tuna. The service is great too. Fun place to go for happy hour. :)
Review Source:I am a regular along with Patrick whom posted below and I have been a loyal patron of the Elephant Bar for about 4 years now since I moved into the area... mainly because I can exploit their great happy hour prices and walk home and make it home alive. Â I would recommend the burgers, french dip, buffalo tenders and if you're feeling really saucy would also recommend their steak and jumbo prawns.
Their prices are on par or maybe even a little better than most other places. Anyone looking for a fun time with very personable staff should visit Elephant bar.
I am a good-looking patron of the Elephant Bar in Rancho Bernardo. My buddies and I are borderline "regulars" at the eBar since we live so close to it and I think everybody needs to know how wonderful this place is. There are a couple of small reasons: Reason #1 is the buxom Ashley. She's a credit to the service industry. She is witty, knowledgeable, always remembers our regular drinks, puts up with my awkward advances, she's friendly and ALWAYS gives her customers personal time to make them happy and comfortable at eBar. Reason #2 is the menu variety. I don't know too many places that do wings (tenders, they're called tenders!!), steak, pad thai (when they had it), and Italian food with equal skill. Reason #3 is the drinks. Thank god for alcohol and the bartenders at eBar, who I've never met, but I do enjoy their work.
I think Ashley, rad food and good drinks should be enough for the majority of the Bell Curve. If that isn't enough to convince to you come spend your hard-earned money at eBar you shouldn't be going out.
Worst service we've had in a long time. Â We were a guest of good friends, so we did not want to say anything during dinner. Â The food and hot drinks were cold, we had to chase down our waiter often to get service, and he was unfriendly and discourteous when our friend said something about her food. Â I concur with the other reviewer, Denny's has better food. Â Never again. Â There are plenty more choices and better restaurants nearby.
Review Source:I had been intrigued in going here since moving into the neighborhood a little over a year ago. Was looking forward to the time we set aside to finally go here last week. It was very disappointing and we did not have a good experience overall. I wish I believed the many negative reviews on yelp about the Elephant Bar Restaurant rather than having given this place a chance.
Food was OK, nothing special. Denny's has better dishes than the food here. Chicken in two dishes was overcooked and chewy.
Worst of all was the service. Our server Morgan must have been having a bad day because he had a bad attitude and was snappy at us the whole time for no reason. When my wife kindly asked if we could order a small baked potato for our baby son to eat he said that the restaurant does not have potatoes. He didn't care to even try to offer any alternative for our hungry baby (not even plain bread) and immediately walked to the computer behind me to enter another table's order. I turned and nicely said "excuse me" to ask for another option, but before I could say anything else he slammed his hand down and gave me a dirty, annoyed look. My wife, in-laws, and I all had bad vibes with this server and were not impressed with this place at all. Â
I didn't even want to leave a tip, but decided not to stoop to their level of mediocrity. Â Typing this up is actually making my blood boil just remembering our bad experience at this restaurant and I don't want to rant. In a nutshell, believe the many bad reviews on this place and don't even waste your time or money going here to eat.
A neighbor  told me how he loved elephant bar... However I should know better considering he as big as an elephant. And will think anything edible is good
Heard about the jambalaya. Which is one of my favorite foods. But it is terrible here! And expensive too! Bad seasoning and the rice it is served over is bad too.
I also tried a steak meal it wasn't good either,
Save your money. If you want a place for good ambiance and good food try cheese cake factory. It is the same restaurant style but it is real good.
Pricey and not worth it.
I used to really like this place, until tonight! So the food is still decent but man did I have a experience like I've NEVER had before! So our waitress was kinda a space cadet all nt, forgetting my friends wine, chatting it up w other tables while we wait on end to order but what really set off the night was when we were paying the bill. We asked her to split it in half, when we got our checks I noticed my friends bill was charged the entire bill. While mine was charged half our bill. We were upset and spoke w the manager, we felt that a fast one was trying to be pulled over our heads. She apoligized and gave us discount cards and grabbed the receipt to which my friend was charged the entire total and ripped it up---um shady!!!!
My friend who has worked in the restaurant biz says "mistakes" like that don't happen. Im bummed bc I liked that place. Oh well. Always take a second look@your bill diners!
This is one of the three places that my coworkers and I used to go to after work for happy hour. The food is a lot better here than at the other happy hour spot one block from here. Like a lot lot better. Maybe even a lot lot lot better.
The trade off? It's slightly more expensive than the other place, but it's not so much so that I would mind.
For me: almost always the calamari. It's simple and tastes good. Nothing special but it's good. One time I got the burger. It was ok. The fried chicken whatevers were ok. The coconut shrimp's not bad. We don't actually eat dinner here. It's just food to go with the alcohol :)
Long island iced tea. Really the point is to get kinda tipsy, maybe even drunk if your day was not that great (or even if it was). Their LIIT is fairly potent. Three of those bad boys and I'm feeling it. I've had some of the other cocktails, but they're a tad too sweet for my taste. The mojito was not as minty as I wanted it to be.
Anyways, fair happy hour place. I'd give it 3.5 stars, and I'm rounding up.
Parking can suck sometimes. You have to come at like five or so to get a decent spot. One time I can at like 5:45 and it took a good ten minutes to find a spot. Still made it to happy hour though!
If in RB and need a place for a happy hour, not a bad place to be. Good outdoor seating, decent sized bar area.
The parking situation is a bit of a mess though. Tight squeeze, and it doesn't feel like a lot of space. Also, getting back towards the highway is always a bit of a trek, since you have to first drive away from the highway and eventually get yourself heading back in the right direction.
Foods your standard E Bar food. Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable. Not many healthy options.
I had the sandwich and soup plate. My "soup" was a mac n' cheese instead. Wasn't bad.
Came here for a nice dinner for a good time in san diego but it
seemed like they didn't even have a chef. The menu's had food on them and the waiter did not bring us a second round of drinks . The food was absolutely horrible as if it came out of cans and frozen for weeks. We paid $100.00 for food no one ate .
I came here for lunch one day and it was pretty packed! The parking was really packed and the spots are pretty small.
I guess they have 2 sections, a lounge and a dining area, and we picked the dining area. I got their chicken marsala medallion lunch special and it was DELICIOUS. I can't believe I finished it all.
It was also my friend's/coworker's birthday so I took her out as a birthday lunch. She got a salad and sandwich and they were going to bring us out a free dessert but unfortunately we didn't have time for it because we had to go back to work.
The service was great. The waiter was extremely polite and attentive and deff didn't make us feel bad for leaving after having gotten us a birthday dessert.
I'd love to come and try out their happy hour! :)
I have been to this location for a several times, and always enjoyed it. BUT yesterday I had the worst experience ever.
It was a late Saturday lunch around 1 pm. The waitperson didn't bring our drink order after we Dan finally see he wondering around like 20 minutes after taken our drink orders. During meal time my friend asked for more peanut sauce because she  had finished all she got, the waitperson confirmed by repeating the request, but never return with it. ????? When the check(s) came, my credit card was charged not only our meal but someone else's too. Seriously, it was not even a busy lunch rush hour. Can someone or the manager be actually working. The waitperson was lucky that my friends offer to leave the tips as I was treating them. They were a lot nicer than me I wouldn't leave much tips for the service that I received.
I had always LIKED this place as the food has always been decent, and service has always been fine and pleasant. So I have always liked to come here. NO MORE!
Our party of 5 which included a kid arrived at 730pm on a Monday. Â We seemed to get the last parking spot, but the restaurant was only about half full. Â We had made reservations about 15 minutes prior, and were taken right to our table.
The waitress came right up and got our drink orders, I also asked for a round of waters (since here in Cali they save water and don't give it to you unless you ask). Â She came back many minutes later with 2 drinks on her tray. Â She came back many minutes later with the rest of the drinks, and no waters. Â We gave our orders, which was a little shotgunned, random, and changed a few times, but she seemed to get it all.
We got the garlic bread with sauce and sweet potato fries as an appetizer, both were alright, the bread didn't seem like it was too fresh. Â More like several hours old.
Our food came out a bit later, didn't take too long - which it better not since the place was half empty...or was it half full... Â I had the mac-and-cheese and mozzarella-and-bruschetta plate. Â Other plates were kids burger (we got fries even though we ordered veggies), shrimp and mahi noodle soup (tasty), sweet and sour chicken, and some other plate that I didn't notice. Â My mac and cheese was plain - it could have really been pumped up if it had chunks of ham or bacon in it. Â I think they put it through the microwave, since the croutons on top were rubberized. Â The mozzarella and bruschetta was good, although the bruschetta (tomato, onion, spice mix) tasted a little off. Â Almost like it had only 1 more good day before it went bad.
Good thing my son was driving so I could enjoy my tall Blue Moon.
The waitress was nice but seemed off her game. Â I had to ask for waters about 3 times, straws, ketchup, etc. Â Things that should come naturally. Â Yea, I know, First World Problems.
I'm not fond of places that have 40+ items on their menu - there's no way they can produce that much and keep it fresh. Â That means lots of frozen, pre-cooked, and re-heated stuff. Â I prefer specialty places that have just 1 page of items, I'm more confident it will be fresh.
I have a theory that works in some eating establishments: if the salad/appetizers are very good, then the main dish is okay; but if the salad/appetizers are okay, then the main dish is great; the elephant bar really great appetizers & cocktails :) entree- not so much.
I got the salmon roll app. & shrimp scampi pasta. My hubby got grilled shrimp app. (which they were awesome enough to do- per our request :) & Mongolian beef.
We switched 1/2 way through.
So why 4 stars you ask?
Sometimes you want really fantastic drinks & appetizers. This is THE place for that in my opinion.
Two words: garlic bread. The rustica baked garlic bread was by far my favorite dish of the night and the reason why I bumped this review up to four stars. The bread was seasoned and baked perfectly and practically melted in my mouth. The marinara sauce was flavorful and I also asked for some ranch to dip it in. I like to mix it up.
We also split a 3 cheese macaroni which was decent but maybe could have benefited from a couple more cheeses. It needed more of a kick. I then tried the Moroccan skewers, which was a new experience for me. I'm not very familiar with Moroccan spices and the new flavors threw me off. The chicken is served in a bowl of couscous, which is also new to me, and not my favorite. My boyfriend had the Korean beef tacos combo with a strawberry margarita.
I've been to the Elephant Bar a couple of times and I do enjoy their happy hour. The hours are long, which is nice, and the menu is rather diverse.
Got the hand breaded chicken tenders with mac & cheese and a side of coleslaw. Our service was a little slow. The place wasn't overly crowded and there was plenty of parking today (Monday evening). I've come before and could not find a parking spot. It's not a big lot and gets full and hard to find parking sometimes. It's located on the corner of West Bernardo Drive and Rancho Bernardo Road.
The food was average. Nothing really outstanding and most of the dishes are over $10. The chicken tenders were nice and crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The coleslaw was very bland and the mac & cheese was kind of meh! The server was okay, just seemed to be slow getting our meals and then we were delayed because our server gave one of our meals out to another person at another table so we waited to eat out of courtesy. One of my friend's had cold fries (even when it first came out). She didn't want to complain, but I will here! I had water to drink and was not asked if I wanted a refill (I did), but I shouldn't have to ask!
For the prices you have to pay, I would expect more for my money.
Their burger combo for happy hour is the best - it's really good and you get a beer, burger and fries for just $6.50!
For some reason their patio service is pretty bad - Â we've been here 3 times for late night happy hour and each time we've had to ask the servers multiple times for utensils, mustard, ketchup, to turn on the heaters etc.
Also not sure if it's the servers or the kitchen who screwed up almost every order we had (onions when we asked for none, burger cooked well done when we asked for medium, etc).
I like this place but something really must be done about the servers out on the patio - I don't think it's because they are swamped because it wasn't that busy all the times we went.
I like this place...I have been there now three times to meet my fiance for lunch. Â Because of the location (near work), the outdoor seating, the light lunch items, and the sidecars, it is becoming our go-to place whenever we are able to arrange a lunch meeting. Â
A sidecar is one of my favorite drinks and can be hard to find....especially at random restaurants in suburbia. Â Here, they do a great job, and I always have to have one, even at lunchtime! Â The food isn't the most exciting in the world, but they have quite a variety. Â I enjoy both the shrimp and ahi salad. Â Next time I plan to try the lettuce wraps. Â Anyway, for decent food, decent service, fun drinks, and outdoor seating, this is a pretty nice spot!
The cooks running the show at Elephant Bar Rancho Bernardo are apparently my clones.  Whenever, I venture into my kitchen, it's a hit or miss, mostly miss, and so are the culinary creations of  Elephant Bar RB's cooks.  My most recent deals were hit, but the past is filled deep with misses.
Two recent dishes, *Quick Seared Ahi Tuna Salad* and *Szechwan Shrimp & Chicken in Spiced Garlic Sauce* were so nicely made that for a moment I forgot my previous experiences. Â The Tuna salad comes with a Japanese touch: seaweeds, edamame and sundried tomatoes. Â Just remember that Ahi Tuna is an acquired taste (it's not my cup of tea, my wife loves it!) Â Szechwan Shrimp & Chicken dish is a new item. Â It tasted very good, mild with fresh flavors of broccoli, chicken and shrimp, and comes with rice--highly recommended.
These two dishes should have garnered them four shiny stars easily, but the taste of past ballpark-level dishes is still lingering--it takes time to erase old memories. Â Those Pad Thai stuck in my molars sucked; I vividly remember that dish made with no-love at all. Â But, I have learned one thing: stay away from what most people don't order here, and maybe it is Pad Thai. Â Stick to your drinks and Szechwan .

When you have a party of 6 and only 1 person is even partially satisfied with their meal, that's a 1 star restaurant.
Two people ordered some beef plate which came with rice. Â The rice was crunchy. Â They sent it back and got more crunchy rice in return. Â Not acceptable and the manager came out and apologized.
My sandwich was pictured in the menu with two LARGE pieces of fresh mozzarella cheese on it and some decent looking tomato slices. Â What I got was a stale roll with a tiny piece of cheese that I couldn't even taste, an even smaller tomato and the driest and most flavorless chicken I've had in a long time. Â
The Mac and Cheese looked appetizing in the picture in the menu. Â It looked like something which had been sitting in a bowl overnight and was microwaved. Â Disgusting.
In the end they did not comp us anything or give us a free dessert despite our many complaints. Â What a waste of money.
Frankly, I will never pay for another meal from this crappy place.
Don't waste your money, just get your food at the gas station next door, it can't be any worse and it'll certainly be cheaper.
Went out with two friends from work at the recommendation of another co-worker. Â We were expecting an actual bar, but when the booth next to us had kids, we were sorely mistaken. Â They were well behaved, so it didn't spoil the mood too much.
Atmosphere aside, their food was good. Â I grabbed something Shrimp Adventure, which had a good dozen pieces of shrimp cooked in different ways. Â Also on the menu was a Jungle Colada. Â Best version of a Pina Colada I've ever had.
Their food was tasty, but pricey. Â I think for those two purchases, my part of the tab was ~$25. Â Take your family here... but I wouldn't recommend this to people actually looking for a stereotypical bar. Â At least their bar does have a TV.
