Great sandwiches, awesome beer selection.
We stumbled in here after a bad experience at another place in town. Our bartender Courtney was awesome. She had wonderful recommendations on food and beer. I loved the Almost Famous Sandwich. They make everything in house except for the bread and the chips. The chips are made for them and they are awesome too. My sandwich was so good I will go here every time I am in town!
Go here if you like food that is made from scratch by a staff who truly cares about the quality of food and spirits!
We passed through Galena while on our way home from Dubuque. Â Strolling down the street and couldn't resist the sign advertising the soup specials. Â I ordered the seafood chowder. Â Holy smokes Batman, was that some good seafood! Â It was chocked full of lobster, scallops, shrimp and some veggies. Â Delicious but not too heavy. Â We also had some amazingly delish bread pudding. Â If you are in the area, it's worth stopping at for lunch.
Review Source:We were staying in the Desoto House across the street. After 6pm in Galena, the only thing you are going to find open are bars and restaurants. We decided we didn't want to sit around the hotel anymore so we went to Embe. We had eaten prior to arriving, so we just wanted to have some drinks. Both of us are martini fans and they had a nice looking selection on the board. We tried a couple, but our favorite when we were there was the "Fat Elvis". It's a Peanut butter and banana martini. Fantastic! Loved it! The prices on the Martini's ran about $10.00 each when we were there. I'll let you judge if that's high or low. I thought it was average for what was being served.
The place itself is kind of small. The bar takes up most of the room, but there are some tables in the front and along one of the walls. They have DJ's and live music at times, but due to the size, it gets loud. I mean LOUD. We were at a small table with another couple and we could barely hear each other. It was that bad. Just be prepared when you go that you may have to yell at each other. We enjoyed our visit and I'm sure we'll go back.
Neat little restaurant in downtown Galena. Wife and I went there for lunch because we wanted a light lunch (like sandwiches or salad) vs. heavier offerings from other downtown restaurants. Â For the $, I would have preferred my roast beef sandwich to have been served with a little nicer bread. They used wheat butter rolls for my sandwich, served with potato chips. Â Not horrible, but could be better...
Review Source:This place ROCKS!!! Here's what I had that rocked my world: A beef sandwich with some insanely good dijon/horseradish sauce(house specialty). And then a Turkey sandwich that featured a Caesar Pesto - a pesto that itself tasted exactly like a caesar salad. The sauces here are so great you could eat them all by themselves. Then came the coup de gras - the bread pudding. It was probably the most decadent and awesome desert I've had in years! Â The beer selection is crazy good, too. I cannot wait to go back :D
Review Source:After reading all the good reviews we decided to come here for lunch. I must say that this place really is hit and miss. We went with a group of 4 people and 3 of us ordered the same sandwich (Embe sandwich with pulled pork, lettuce, pico de gallo, and balsamic vinaigrette) because it sounded so great. Well, the 3 sandwiches all tasted different and I had to send mine back because it came completely soaked in balsamic vinaigrette. My brother in law's embe sandwich tasted perfect, my husband's embe tasted ok and mine was awful. The place was busy and it took them forever to bring me another sandwich. The replacement sandwich was much better but still not as good as my brother in law's. The potato chips that accompanied the sandwiches were really good and so was the appetizer. However, the inconsistency with the sandwiches made me not want to go back. Also, I did not like that there was no apology for my soggy sandwich or long wait for the replacement sandwich and no discount for all the inconveniences. The price range is supposedly $ however for the poor service and inconsistent food, I really thought this place was totally overpriced ($60 total for 4 people--4 sandwiches plus an appetizer and no drinks). Will NOT be going back.
Review Source:Nice place for a quick bite or drink. Â I had a peanut butter sandwich, and I am always happy to find a place with one on the menu. Â Great snack with the tasty chips. Â Nice drinks and a table in the window to see the activity on main street. Â Friendly staff, good menu and all around good experience.
Review Source:We were strolling through the beautiful historic streets of Galena and my stomach began to rumble. We were so caught up in the rest and relaxation of such a small but beautiful town that we had forgotten to eat ALL DAY! Steve pointed out that he saw a menu a few windows back that had a ton of sandwiches so we walked back to find EmBe.
Steve cannot be sure that this was the place he was talking about but we are both glad we were too hungry to go anywhere else. We had the Rare Lisa roast beef sandwich on a freshly baked wheat roll and horseradish mayo. It was beyond fresh and delicious that we almost ordered a second. It came with a side of made-in-house potato chips that a spinkling of both salt and sugar. We followed lunch with a dessert of cherry cobbler that was THE BEST cobbler I had ever had. It was made with a wheat and bran flour that gave it a wholesome rustic taste. I fooled myself into thinking, "hey, it's bran, it's HEALTHY!" so I ate the whole thing. I think my other half only had about 2 bites of it.
This is definitely on our list of places to eat when we hit up Galena again.
This place opened in the first site of the Grape Escape. They made martinis my wife liked and I tried some Galena brewing wheat beer on tap. They had a band in at about 9:30 on a Sat nite, who were decent.
Before that tho, they had some classic rock on the video/stereo that I enjoyed. It featured little tidbits on the screen about whatever song was playing, very entertaining. We enjoyed this place more than the new Grape Escape location.
We got into town at about 10:00 on a Thursday night and NEEDED something to eat and a drink. With no idea what place would actually be good, we settled for whatever was open....and it was good! Â The roast beef with blue cheese was very tasty and the bartender was as nice as can be. A cool atmosphere for the (gulp) older crowd...well I'm only 38 but you know what I mean. :)
Review Source:On our recent trip to Galena, we were hoping to hit the legendary Grape Escape. Â Alas, it was moving locations and closed in the meantime. Â Where we ended up, at their old spot, is where Embe popped up. Â We had no other ideas of where to go, so we decided to check it out.
I'm so glad that we did. Â They were trying out some new drink concoctions, and the Cucumber Collins became instantly legendary; it was easily one of the best citrus-based cocktails I've had in ages. Â My husband was happy to sip Manhattans, and we chatted with the bartender while he was between orders, learning a bit more about the place. Â He was also grand enough to hand us a card for the local taxi company when a storm kicked in (and we had walked there from our hotel).
We ended up back at Embe a week later. Never mind the array of places on Galena's Main Street; my husband had checked out their food menu when we were there previously, and he wanted to test that portion of their business. Â We both had their signature Embe pulled pork sandwich and could not have been more pleased. Â The option to order reasonable vs. obscene portions was both amusing and welcome.
Now I suppose I'll spend the rest of my days trying to make that Cucumber Collins on my own. Â That was some serious bar magic.
