I am always for the concept of a microbrew place. I want this place to succeed because of things I will discuss in mere seconds. But seriously, what's with putting them in some kind of mall when you're in the county, especially when you're the only one in that strip? This place could be in one of their abandoned warehouses or similar spaces that have been left for said structures.
Our server was also the bartender, so the fact that he was tending to us at many moments of the evening tells us who's the real boss there. He also knew about all the beers and gave recommendations to me and my friends. They have some interesting combinations (such as my raspberry stout) and other hoppy brews I am willing to try next time I am in St. Chuck!
Which brings me to the location. Again. St. Chuck is a developing place I see, but this is extremely out of place in the area. This place deserves to be in a place where people are there to enjoy their beers, not to play country all the time until the last person who gets drunk. The crowd was unusually older and I felt extremely out of place. Typically microbrew places bring all sorts of people, but even the hipsters are scared to go here simply because it is across the river.
Luckily, I have an excuse to be back so of course I will to have another raspberry stout!
Great place! Â Nano Brewery I suppose you would call it. Â A micro brew spills more beer than they make all year. Â
Stopped in there last night and had my first experience at Exit 6. Â Service was excellent, and the bartender was friendly, helpful, and paid attention to our drink levels. Â We were drinking half pints, and they never went empty before she was right there asking if we wanted another. Â
Met their brew master after he caught us peeking in at their set up. Â He just got done boiling, and you could still smell the malt which is one of the best smells ever. Â He was very friendly, and informative regarding how they create their batches at E-6. Â The set up there is awesome, and gives any home brewer hope that it is possible to make amazing beer yourself. Â Obviously their set up is much more intricate, and elaborate but still true to the home brewer roots. Â
On to the beer. Â First off, I am not sure why people complain that there are no mainstream beer products. Â If you want a glass of bud select go drink at Applebees. Â The same reason you wont get arbor mist at a wine bar, E-6 is geared towards the person who appreciates the craft industry, and the hoppy IPA's or malty stouts. Â I don't blame E-6 for not offering the larger brews... why would you want your patrons drinking ab products when they put the smaller breweries out of business. Â Why would you want your patrons drinking watered down beer over exceptional brews that people have put their blood, sweat, and tears into? This is a beer drinkers bar plain and simple. Â
Back on to the beer... Â I started the night with E-6's own Cream Ale. Â Wow! Â This beer was amazing. Â The cream flavor was similar to a creme soda. Â Light, but flavorful. Â If you want a light beer, it doesn't get lighter or better than this at E-6.
Next two beers were the E-6 Brown Ale, and then on to the Founders Breakfast stout. Â Both were awesome. Â The breakfast stout was strong and malty (I prefer stouts, and porters over IPA's), and the coffee flavor was excellent. Â Also had the Creme Brulee IS which was like candy. Â
My advice is go with half pints because there are way too many beers available, and you don't want to miss out. Â
I'll be back as soon as I can! Â FYI the atmosphere at E-6 is great! Â Don't let the strip mall fool you, its a different world in there... cozy and relaxed. Â They also have plenty of TVs which makes it a great place to eventually watch a Blues game if that lockout BS ever ends.
I had to move away before this place could start brewing their own stuff and there was great sadness in this parting, at least on my part. Â I've know most of the people involved in this venture for many years due to our shared homebrewing habits and have no problem telling them that their beer sucks. Â I've finally managed to return to the area and sample their goods for the first time on a professional level. Â Just Damn!
I've tried their in house IPA and IIPA tonight. Â They were fantastic! Â As a caveat and just to be fair I've moved to Texas a year ago were the local IPAs are usually something between mediocre and over hopped BudLight. Â Maybe I'm jaundiced. Â Go in and try yourself. Â I don't think you will be disappointed.
I'll be making time tomorrow to drop in again and try the rest of their offerings.
To start, I have never written an on-line review. Â I have never been moved to do so until now.
I REALLY wanted to like this place. Â My wife and I were meeting a friend for a drink last night. Â It was close by, and smoke free. Â None of us have ever been, so we were excited. Â The smoke free, beer only concept, decor, and ambiance were very promising. Â We walked in and sat down ready for an enjoyable evening. Â Like I said, we were excited.
The 1 star rating is for the service. Â It was AWFUL. Â Absolutely FOUL.
* The bartender was short with us. Â No smile, no suggestions, nothing. Â For instance, we had no idea that Exit 6 brewed their own beer (learned from other reviews). Â I looked at the list and said "bring me something light." Â Perfect time to introduce me to their brand. She brought me a Schlafleys. Â Even if they didn't have a light in house brew, she could have said "hey this is our in house brand, it's not light but try it and tell me what you think." Â When she brought our drinks she dropped them off and didn't say a word. Â She was heading outside to smoke. Â I had to stop her to find out what I was drinking.
*We were asking questions from the beer list on the table. Â Her answers were "don't have that, Â don't have that, don't have that." Â Then said "That list is old." Â Never pointed us to a current list.
* We had to go to the bar 2x to get more rounds. Â She was completely unfriendly. Â After handing me my beers she walked away saying NOTHING. Â I said "thank you" and she barked "welcome" out of the side of her neck.
* She brought our friend a flat beer. Â Or friend took it back and said said it was flat. Â Bartender said "its probably the keg." Â Didn't offer to exchange it.
* My wife (doesn't drink beer) asked for a soda (diet coke). Â When she came back she asked her "do you still have Fitzs?" Â Bartender (with a short tone) said "you got our last soda." Â Sat it down unopened, no glass no ice. Â And not ONCE did she come back to offer a water or anything else.
*My wife asked for the bill she came back and said "It's $30.00." Â No itemized bill. Â We paid it, and then she (I kid you not ) THREW) it on the table, walked off with not a word.
Here are things we never heard from the bartender:
"Hello welcome to Exit 6"
"Are you folks from around here?"
"How do you like that beer?"
"You like light beer? May I suggest - ?*
"You like spicy beer? Â May I suggest?"
"Are you sure you don't want a beer ma'am? Â I'm sorry we don't have any more soda, would you like a water?
"Thank you for coming"
"Hope we see you again"
Those are the kind of things you can expect to hear at Millstream. Â Which, is where we will go next time we want a craft beer.
This is as craft brew as craft brew can get. Â Exit 6 is an example of a neighborhood brewery that everyone should support. Â Great beer made by the hardest working guy I have ever met. Â Proprietor Jeff Britton and his brews are a great example of what America was built on. Â Rotating taps ensure you don't have the same selection even if you visit twice in one week. Â You can't get any better.
Review Source:LOVE this place. The slogan is "No Crap on Tap" If you are a beer lover you have found nirvana and if you are not a beer lover chances are you will find something that you will like here. If you are not sure what to order ask Jeff, the owner and he makes very good recommendations based on your preferences. I would recommend this place to everyone--you can't go wrong.
Review Source:This is a great hidden gem that is just around the corner from Mannino's Market in Cottleville. I have tried 7 or 8 of the beers that they brewed and I have liked them all, especially the vanilla cream and the IPA. They always have a great lineup of other craft beers on tap (14 or 15 other taps) and a good selection of beer in bottle.
The atmosphere holds them back from getting the 5th star on my review. It can be very loud from the juke box music and the patrons, and there is nothing to absorb the sound (carpet, acoustical tiles in ceiling, etc...) Also, the decorating is very bare and looks like they ran out of money to finish off the space. Â All that being said, I GO THERE FOR THE GREAT BEER!
This is a no nonsense craft beer bar. It is similar to ITAP, but these folks know their beer and they are very happy to help you find something that you will like.
Going to a craft beer bar and complaining about not having any AB on tap for the wife, is like taking her to a cigar bar and complaining about smoke, or taking your vegan girlfriend to Ruth's Chris. Â What were you thinking?
Now that we cleared that up, this is a place to go for GREAT BEERS. Â I get it. You interpret that as perhaps being a little beer snobbish. Â It's really just passion for the artistry that goes into brewing particular style of beer well. Â You don't have to like all styles of beer. Â My wife hates Belgian beers (she loves the Trotter Fox Brown at Exit 6), and alot of beer snobs will tell you that Belgian Beers are the best in the world. Â
Jeff (the owner) has always been nothing but informative and helpful on my multiple visits there. Â I have never seen him display any attitude. Quite the contrary, I saw him once give free sample after free sample to a couple in an effort to find something that the poor guy's wife liked. Â Ultimately, she didn't like any of them. Â What are you gonna do? Â What I have seen many times is people come in and discover for the first time that they LOVE craft beer.
If you are a Hop Head, Exit 6 is the exit that you want to take on your journey to Nirvana. Â They have great Big Hoppy Beers from Breweries like: Founder's, Lagunitas, Arcadia, Bells, Stone, et al. Â They have Big Belgian style beers, They have Russian Imperial Stouts, Double IPA's, Lambics, Wit Biers, Seasonals, you name it. Â The selection rotates, but the knowledgable waitstaff has always been able to help me find something that suits my taste.
I have had probably 5 of the beers that they brew on premise, and without exception, they have been very clean beers. Â Some of them can be eclectic (like the Raspberry Jalapeno - Razmanian Devil), vanilla creme, pumpkin beer etc., so you might just be surprised with what you find there.
There is no food, however local places will deliver, or you can carry it in. Â There are flat screens on the wall to watch sports. Â There is a Golden Tee in the corner, and a sick juke box, with just about any song that fits your mood (no Journey Pleeeeze) :) Â One thing you won't find, is beer snobs. Â Strike up a conversation with the staff, or a fellow patron, most will be happy to help you find a beer that you will fall in love with.
So if you want to take a break from Wine Country, and stop by Beer Country, get off at Exit 6.
The best environment for beer enthusiasts. Unlike ITAP the owner and staff actually know their beer and are great at recommendations and are fantastic about suggestions and answering questions about beer. Their in house brews are some of my all time favorite beers. Now if only they would offer growlers.
Review Source:Great experience! Had his Fixed It!#1 and Trotter Fox Brown and found both to be well above average. The owner cares about his beer and customers. Found a new home! I'll have keep going back till I've tried all his creations. That may take awhile as he's a small batch brewer that constantly changes most his brews.
Review Source:Dropped in on Thanksgiving night with my husband, just to get out and about. I tried two of their own crafted beers - the Vanilla Cream and the Pumpkin Ale. Both were excellent, and I wish I had the fortitude to try all five of them in one night.
The selection of other beer was excellent, and had a lot of intriguing offerings, as well as some familiar ones...yet no AB, Miller, or Pabst. As the sign said, "no crap on tap."
What might be cool is if they eventually offered one of those sampler flights, where I could have tried all five of their own types.
I will be back, though!
I can appreciate that they make their own beers and the owner obviously has made it a passion. However, what do you do about the picky wife ?? Â They don't carry any Bud products. That always gives me the impression that they are trying to be a bit to cool. Â There are no mixed drinks and no food. So, if your out without the lady and want to drop in for a fast beer that's about all it's good for.
Review Source:Exit 6 is a craft beer outpost in the wilderness frontier of Hotshots and Applebees. Five taps are dedicated to beers made on-site (find Exit 6 on facebook to see exactly when the Feds will let them start brewing), and the remainder have a great selection of craft beers from all over the United States. Even more varieties are available in the bottle. There is no food, but you can order in or bring your own. Â The atmosphere can be on the beer-snobish side and please don't walk in and ask for a Bud or a Bud Light. The proprietor doesn't appear interested in guiding you through your first craft-beer experience if you make the error of ordering a MacroBrew BMC.

BREWING UPDATE: Exit 6 has approval to begin brewing. I'll update when they get their own beers on tap.
I had the inside scoop as a relative is a home brewer and gave us the details on this new establishment.
I've gone 2 times, and both times. I've been very happy.
They are all about No Crap on Tap. And I'll say, I've not had any crap since I've gone.
If you want to compare it something, I'd say it's similar to ITAP, in the sense that there is no food. You are more than welcome to bring anything in though. It is centrally located to lots of local eateries.
The atmosphere is nice, Jeff, the owner is really cool. If you don't know what you want, he'll help you out. He's quite passionate about his beers on tap.
They will eventually have their own home brew, but I think they are still waiting to get some approvals on that. But based on some local brews I've had, I'm quite excited.
If you are looking for a chill place to watch the game, or just hang out with friends, this is the place. It's not a let's get dressed out and go out kind of a scene. Low key, come as you are, and drink some tasty brew.
