My first time here was 6/7/13. I stopped by around 8:30p to pick up two tickets to the 10p showing to see Grant Cotter and Samuel Comroe. (Which both were amazing to watch live!) Â I found the sign but couldn't actually find the venue. After walking around, I seriously thought I had lost my mind. As I started to walk back out the front door to the warehouse type building it's housed in, I happened to look up and see the small Flappers sign upstairs and to the left. Â We walked up the stairs towards the check in area. There wasn't anyone at the desk, so I wasn't sure what to do, however, after waiting a few minutes a gal came out with menus and asked if we needed help. We purchased our tickets to the 10p show and asked a few questions, which she was more than happy to answer.
At 9:45p we headed back to the venue to get in line for our show. There were still available booths outside the front doors to the club. After the previous show was cleared and cleaned we were lead inside to what was a very small but quaint room. We were seated practically in front of the stage and mic. I was a little nervous about that!
Overall the experience was pretty good. There weren't many occupied tables during this particular show, but it was nice because two of the comedians were really able to interact with the audience, and get the crowd going. And.not.in.your.face.going.to.embarrass.you.kinda.Âway which I am thankful for. I can embarrass myself on my own thank you very much. I wasn't thrilled with our waitress, who's name I didn't take note of. But I had to request a water three times before I was finally served one, and I would have like to enjoy another glass of wine, but she never came back to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. The other waitresses serving on this particular evening seemed very on top of things however. Â Alcohol wise it appeared to be mostly a beer/wine bar, no mixed or fancy fruity drinks were seen on the menu. We didn't order food, so I can't comment on that. But it is a two item minimum, as most comedy venues are.
I will definitely be keeping my eye on the calendar for another show I'd like to attend. They have a Sunday comedy show for families with children, and it sounds pretty entertaining, I might just come back and check it out. Â I think Flappers is a great little venue, and in a great part of town too! I look forward to another visit in the near future.
Awesome place!!! :) Last night was my first night at a comedy club! & I'm so glad that I picked this place hahaha.
I got this voucher for buy one get one free ticket so that was a good deal for me already! (But there's also a 2 item minimum per person)
This place is located INSIDE this "indoor mall" type of feel. Right before Hip Kitty, you go inside & there's all these arts & crafts store (which makes me wanna come back because I wanna check the place out when they're actually open) and then basically you go upstairs & on your right.... there it is!
When we first got there, the lady was super sweet & got us all signed in so we were just sitting around until the show started. Our saturday night show was performed by KT Tatara, Drew Lynch, Erik Escobar & this MC named Joanie? Anyways, all in all it was a fun time! The comedians were sooooooo hilarious I laughed the whole way through!
At the end, they did 3 raffle prizes! However, I didn't win anything :( Oh wells. Oh! & the drinks were soooooo good! We got Sangria & Lemon bubbles! Both delicious and got me buzzin haha. & we also paired it with a wedge salad. I wish they had more food items on their menu because most of the stuff wasn't too appealing to me. So our 4th item was a coke.
But I would definitely come back here again! :) Loooooved it.
I go to Flappers in Claremont quite often. Yes, more so since they got the new manager. She makes the place light up when she smiles. Always rushing around to try to make everyone happy.
I go to Saturday shows at 7 and Sunday shows at 7 because I have to work all night after those shows. It's good to go to work with a smile and chuckle on the inside.
I love the buffalo wings. The wait staff are adorable and at least for me always polite.
Zach Miller is a funny yet crude dude but makes no bones about that. He has been in the biz for a while.
With the raffles, there is always a GOOD chance of winning tickets to a show. Win 10 tickets and bring some friends. The world is too serious these days.
Bottom line, new management, so don't pay too much attention to the negative reviews. Go there for yourself and check it out,
Cool place. Â Came here on a first date and was pleasantly surprised. Â I didn't know what to expect, but it was definitely a hidden gem.
The venue is a nice close-knit space for comedy. Â But the location is kind of odd. Â Located in a shopping center-esque mall. Â Also, they should get some food and drink options that would make it complete.
I would come again
Who doesn't love stand up comedy? My boyfriend had two free tickets, which prompted us to have a date night at this location. I've been to a few different comedy club venues and this one is about half the size of the Improv. Everything is well kept. The waiting area is indoors, which was good for us since it was raining the night we went. The service was great. They have a few craft beers and some of the standard beers you find everywhere. We both got the veggie sandwich, which was def fresh and yummy! I definitely see us coming back for future dates!
Side notes:
The bathroom is shared with the rest of the building. It's well kept, but there will be a line since it's only one bathroom.
They have an option for a life long membership that's about $1000, if you like this place enough it's well worth the price!
Me and a group of 10 friends went here last Saturday night to celebrate my 30th birthday and another friends 40th. My girlfriend made a reservation for us to eat at 6:30 and then enjoy the 8:00 comedy show. We get there and the guy that runs the place ( tall, flamboyant, constantly making jokes) tells us that we don't have a reservation, perhaps we made one for the Burbank location, but come back at 7 and he'll take us in. He even asked us what kind of cake we would like to make up for it. Â So we ran to Casa Moreno in downtown Claremont and thank God they had a table for us available on a Saturday night. We ate quick, came back and watched the comedy show. The show was fine, this review is for the gentleman running the place.
We get sat and our cake never came. Neither did the champagne toast my friend ordered for $25. I guess it all must have been served at the Burbank location? The tables have these little table lights that must be worth fifty cents that attach to the table so you can fill out orders. After we spent probably $300 at the place (would have been more if our dinner reservations weren't screwed up) and we are downstairs making our next move, the dude comes out yelling at us for stealing table lamps. First off, he jacked up our evening royally and these were pretty big birthdays and we don't get baby sitters often. Second off, how freaking tacky to come chase us out for some lame table lamps that we didn't take.
The next day, the 40th birthday boy was so pissed about the whole situation that he called the head quarters and they told him that we DID have a reservation and that the guy was just running late and lied to us. Lets just say, we won't be back. Ever.
Small and intimate seating, literally. Passed on dinner tix (thank God, read on) so got sat up against the stage. Very, very cramped and tight. I asked to sit our party in the booth-backed seats and was told those seats were for dinner guests and the show was sold out. What a total LIE!!!
The show was only half full and there were other better seats everywhere! The midget headliner was great, but the two openers sucked! Both openers were barely funny and wore what looked like their laundry day clothes to perform. The comedians were literally less than two feet from me and my neck got cramped staring up at them. Also not to mention you literally get spit on from being so close.
Food and Service. Both sucked as well!!! You had two or three waitresses running around like chickens with their heads cut off. They were so busy forget having them check back on you. For every drink or need we had to literally wave a waitress down several times before getting any service! And they were only half-full!
The website brags about the food so we first tried the shrimp appetizer. Epic Fail!!!! The shrimp was still frozen, you only got a few and to make it worse the cocktail sauce came in a small plastic sealed cup that was frozen solid as well! At that point we said forget the food, it is all pre made, frozen and by the way, even if we wanted to order more food we could not get any service so why bother. And they were only half-full!
There are so many other comedy clubs with much better comedians, seating, food and service why bother going to this rip off! I know we WILL NOT be going back!!!
And did I mention they were only half-full!! LOL!!!
BTW, it's practically free to get in this dive for a reason. That is your first clue as to the quality of acts, food and service that you are NOT going to receive!
Let me start off with a joke. Why did the chicken cross the road? To run into traffic and end his life by getting ran over by a Claremont College hipster's Volvo 240 because a night at Flapper's drove him to commit suicide. I should of known this place is a stinky turd by visiting their website first. My God it looks like it was made in 1998 when you had to manually enter everything in HTML code. It took like 20 minutes for the girl in the front to process a credit card purchase for the tickets then half way through processing she said the machine was broken and pointed us out to an ATM. We finally get in and there's like 6 other people in there. I felt like I was going to watch my six year old sing Yankee Doodle Dandy at her elementary school cafeteria. I think the MC of the show was drunk.. he was holding a beer and sort of slurring his words. The comedy blew. I wonder where they find these comics? Do they ask the guys working the window at Del Taco drive-thru if they want to do stand up? I asked to speak to the manager whom I think was named Dick or Mick. I couldn't really understand him. He was a total anus. I wanted to see if I could get a refund or at least free tickets. He told us to pretty much kick rocks. I will never be back here unless I get totally smashed at the Back Abbey and stumble over here so I can heckle the "comedians".
Review Source:Well, this place got a whole lotta stars last time for great comedy and attentive staff. Â This last time, we actually pre-paid and got the worse service ever! Â The manager even apologized for putting us in a make-shift seat way in the back and said we'd get tickets to the next show for free. Â Ugh, where are those tickets? Â Actually, we don't want them anyway! Â Just go downstairs to the wine bar for a much better time and amazing drinks & food!
Review Source:I returned to Flappers for a Sunday night show.  They do have a liquor license now and their kitchen is working.  The whole check in/pay for tickets process is a little slow and awkward.  The process needs to be streamlined.  Once you are inside, everything is fine.  I only had  a glass of wine and a bottled water.  Maybe next time I will try a food item.  The comics are hit and miss, but that's to be expected. Â
I used to avoid this place at all costs, but I am more willing to go now.
Flappers is a great little place for a few laughs. The people are very helpful and the comedy is well...not for all ages. Haha. It is definitely a place for adults.
The server was very attentive the entire night, despite being the only one serving during the show I went to. She was polite and always sure we had something to drink. The comedians were out there. I had never sat in the front before, so I was a bit nervous about being picked on and lo and behold, my boyfriend and I were almost part of the show, just like two other couples in the front. It was all in good fun though. It was almost like having our own private show with how small the club actually was, which was kind of nice. It was like a little party with people you never met. Haha.
I did like how there was a little raffle at the end of the event and people won various items and coupons for shops in the area. I didn't win anything, but the prizes were decent enough. I did, however, win free tickets for up to 10, for any show I want to go to later that week in a weekly drawing they do. I have no problem going back, but maybe for another show time so I can get a broader sense of humor. =]
Flappers Comedy Club needs some improvement, but it is okay for a fun evening. What is nice about the place is the size and intimacy of the club: very small, there probably isn't a bad seat in the place.
The service, however, is not up to par. Our server hardly came to check on us, our food took waaaay too long to come out (I actually didn't order food, but the two people I was with did), whenever she came out on the floor she didn't pay attention to our table, and I had to try and wave her over a couple times. Now I understand the food taking a long time to come out is not really the server's fault but more due to the cooks/kitchen. My two friends each ordered an entree. One of my friends finally got her meal 45 minutes after we had ordered. Then, nothing. ....What about my other friend's meal?? Fifteen minutes later she finally receives it. How is it that they couldn't bring out both of their plates at the same time?? Especially when one of them was a salad. We had to ask our server a couple times where the food was, and she was not apologetic at all. I don't care if the late-coming of the food is not her fault, but she still needs to display good customer service, which she did not do. She also gave us another table's bill at the end of the night. This place needs to either hire more cooks or develop a better system in their kitchen, as well as teach better customer service and waiting skills. I can't tell you how the food was since all I personally ordered was a couple beers, but my friends didn't say the food was bad or great.
Other than the poor timing of bringing food out and poor service skills, the place is a good little spot for seeing local and obscure/unknown/underground comedians. It's in the Claremont Village which is a nice area.
Hopefully Flappers will improve more with time.
Flappers is on the low end of a 3 star rating for me. Â 3 stars for the layout of the venue and the headliner, 2 stars for the service.
It's my personal belief that people are funnier once you've had a few drinks. Â But, when you sit through almost half of the show and the cocktail server is stopping at every table but yours, it's frustrating...not funny. Â And then when she finally got to us, her excuse is "I'm sorry, I didn't even see you there". Â Really? Â You're a server and you don't scan your section for new customers? Â We were sitting directly in front of the stage, how could you miss us?
Anyway, I like that Flappers, like most comedy clubs, is very small and intimate. Â Clear view of the stage and NO minimum drink purchase....or, if they do have one, it wasn't enforced when I went. Â Not sure about these other reviews that say Flappers doesn't serve alcohol. Â If they didn't before, they do now.
Like I said, the headliner was GREAT! Â The opening acts were hit and miss. Â I think they misjudged the audience a little bit when booking them though. Â Quite honestly, as a black person, you probably shouldn't book black comedians in an area where the main demographic is white suburbians who are 45+. Just sayin'...they may not be able to relate to the material.
Despite the poor service and the awkward opening acts, I think I would give Flappers another try...just wouldn't go out of my way to do so.
Flappers is a close to home hot spot thats easy to get to and if you go on just the right night.. it can be a blast. Â Boyfriend and I have gone a few times. Â First time was great. Â Even though they did not serve any alcohol.. we dont drink anyways..we paid for over priced soda and water but got a free ticket. Â We went again on amateur night.. the laughs were hard to come by but still a nice night out.
Review Source:We bought our "tickets" to the comedy club online with Groupon. (Two admittance for $10)
I thought it would be a deal, but I also thought this was a legitimate comedy club. We get there to find the 10 o'clock show will be starting at about 10:30 and they don't have alcohol. Honestly? Is that not a huge requirement for a comedy club? Especially with a bunch of unknowns.
But to make it worse, as others have said was the TWO ITEM minimum, and the prices of a soda $4 a bottle of tea $6 or the "deal" of three items for $10, so as the attendant put it "only $20 for two people" Sorry, not going to be raped.
WE just left and came home to watch bad TV, certain we were still happier than if we stayed for the show.
NEW news, the main office called me back and offered us free admission to the Burbank facility. I appreciate their offer and look forward to trying again, even if it is a further drive. (I still would never return to the Claremont location)
I've gone to this place since around the time it opened and each time it's drastically worse. From loosing their liquor license, to making you pay three times the price of concession snacks, to having 12 people at a show. Â It's turned into a running joke, "Let's go see a show at Flappers."
Review Source:This is a real small place.. The food is real good. The food is a bit pricey and kinda small but soooo good.
My friend and I came here only cuz we were wondering around the little packinghouse and came across it.
It cost like $20 for me and my friend to get in. I liked that it was cheap to get in.
For it being a small place I didn't expect the comedians to be that funny but I couldn't stop laughing. I had so much fun that night.
Friends and I were bored in Cmont this past saturday, so we looked up what there was to do and this came up, so we said, hey, why not.
It was 9:30ish though, so we were late for the 9 showing, but the guy at the front desk said he would give us a student discount (which he said consisted of buy 1 get 1.) The first thing that caught my attention was the little sign that said "Tickets $15/person & 2 concession or dinner purchase"...I've never gone anywhere that charges you an entrance fee and requires you to buy concessions or dinner. But get this, I got a Snapple tea and had to pay $6 for it! My friend paid for my other friend's yoohoo and it came out to $13! WTF? I cannot fathom how much a dinner would be there, seeing as how 2 yoohoos cost $13, so I guess it's a good thing their kitchen isn't even up and running yet...The guy said that if we got the 3 concessions for $10/person offer, we'd get a ticket for another Flapper show worth $17...so.....where is their profit? In the concessions butt raping?? At least he said he'd let us into the 10 pm showing for free, so I guess we got our money's worth...right?
Moving on...so we get in, and get a table in the back, since we were late, and over all, the 2 comedians that we caught were pretty good. However, when we went back for the 10 o'clock showing, most of the place was empty. That, and the fact that all of the comedians except for the two ladies were 18 year olds or kept forgetting their jokes really made it awkward. We tried to laugh out loud out of pity, but you know...awkward. That, and the groping-happy couple in the front row were being dicks to the comedians, so it was both awkward and obnoxious. I guess that's why they let us in for free, right?
I enjoyed the concept, and if it wasn't for the ridiculous ticket & concession crap, I'd probably go back, but seeing as how I already got a taste of a comedy club, I think I'm pretty much set, but I do recommend the 9pm showing to others who might enjoy it more than I did.
Even though my wife and I loved the venue and the comics, I have to give Flappers a lower rating because of management. Â We arrived at 7:40 for the 8pm show. Â We found one woman who was doing BOTH the ticket selling and the concessions. Â There was also a manager who was there, but instead of helping out at one of the stations, he just starts chatting it up with some of the people waiting in line. Â I mean, doing PR is fine, but not when you are understaffed. Â (To be fair, he did help about 30% of the time, but that woman needed someone 100% there). Â Needless to say, it took FOREVER to get seated and the show started about 30 minutes late. Â
Kudos to that Heroic woman. Â We later found out she was also the sound engineer!
The venue itself is very nice. Â The tables are nicely spaced, not crammed elbow-to-elbow like other clubs. Â We noticed everything was very clean. Â It's located on the 2nd floor of the Packing House; park at the free public structure directly east of it. Â
My wife and I will return again and update the rating if things have changed. Â Good luck, Heroic Lady!
Came here to see Jeff Dye. They show started about 40 minutes late which had some people in the crowd a little peeved, but worked for us because we came 15 minutes late! I thought he was pretty funny but my boyfriend was laughing so hard I thought he was going to fall over and die. I kept looking over periodically during the night to see him literally bent over, clutching his stomach in uncontrollable laughter. He said later he laughed so hard it hurt and that he couldn't remember the last time he'd had that much fun! PLUS the show was "dry" (no alcohol served), so it was ALL due to Jeff Dye's awesomeness!
Not being as big a fan of stand-up (I like improv/comedy sketches better), I enjoyed the show, but to a more moderate degree :). I feel like humor is so unique to each person, plus the show here is constantly changing which means it's hard to make a blanket statement about this place. I'd recommend looking up the comedians you're interested in on Youtube to see if you enjoy their humor before purchasing tickets. Jeff Dye was great! Really understated, slightly awkward, geek humor. I think my bf has a man crush on him. ;)
p.s. There's a two-item minimum so that even when the tickets seem really cheap, you end up paying probably about the same because you have to buy a $4 bag of chips and a $3 soda. But the two-item minimum is pretty standard at most comedy shows.
We were a party of 8 for the comedy show on saturday evening. The place is nice --small & comfortable the "opener comedian" wasn't the greatest---but the "headliner" J. Connally was GREAT---really enjoyed him--BUT I have a HUGE issue with the "club"---we were told we needed to buy, each"2 items"--O.K.-- they have no alcohol drinks now ---so they "DING" you $4.00 for water, soda, & more for other drinks---also the "candy bars",pieces of cake & other items are terribly OVERPRICED at $4.00 & $5.00 dollars apiece---that's a really "rip off"---PLUS we bought the items(didn't want to) and people behind us said they didn't like anything & were let in---even a couple in our group didn't purchase anything---no problem. If you have a RULE of 2 item purchase--it should be ACROSS THE BOARD !!! We felt TOTALLY "ripped off" paying $14.00 for a can of soda, water & 2 candy bars----I'd rather pay more for tickets to cover cost than to be "CHEATED" !!!! Don't know if we'll go back?????
Review Source:I went there on a Saturday night expecting a bunch of claremont hippsters , but to my surprise it was a small nice crowd,
the owner gave us a military discount and was really nice almost too nice.
the show featured a hispanic comedian can't think of his name but really funny, there was a two drink minimum not bad drinks were decent.
nice saturday date idea
I was noted to be on the guest list initially but they could not find my name, they were nice about it, and let us in for free, as it is a 2 drink minimum.
The place is nice. Seating is very close to the stage, nice people, and clean. Â
The show started a little after 8:00 on thursday, as they were waiting for others to arrive to make a crowd of about 30 folks.
The comics were good, honest, blunt, and carefree. Â Lets face it, it is a true comedy place. Â If you are looking for some fun, this is the place. Â They struggled as the crowd was small, but eventually more people showed up and they had the laughter going.
I am glad they brought it here to Claremont, but to keep it, we  need to give them business for them to stay.  Invite your friends!
GREAT PLACE!!!
My girlfriend and I decided to take a risk on a Sat. night and check this place out. We both thought it was awesome!!!!
The headliner was Karen Rontowski and there were a few other comedians that night too.
The staff was super friendly, drinks were priced normal for a comedy place, and we were able to buy our tickets online which was cool because I think we saved a few bucks!!!!
To top it all off we won free tickets for another night!
I would definitely go back and not just because I have free tickets! LOL!
Was in the Claremont VIllage for dinner and drinks for a quiet date night with the boyfriend. We parked in The Packing House and walked out, and this lady handed us 2 for 1 tickets. She was the owner of a comedy club that just opened on the second floor of the Packing House. She said the evening's headliner, Tom Clark is hilarious (as if she would say otherwise). Pretty much promoting the club.. there's a show at 8 and a show at 10. We just barely missed 8, and were going to eat dinner first. So we went to the 10pm show.
Tickets were normally $12 each, but we had the 2 for 1 ticket. Just like any other comedy club.. two drink minimum per person. The drinks and food all come from the Hip Kitty Jazz and Fondu place downstairs (where we were originally going to go after dinner). The drinks were STROONG.. yum. :) I wonder if they made them stronger so the jokes would be funnier.. but, seriously, though.. they were pretty funny, or maybe I'm just easily entertained. There were only about 15 other people in there with us.. probably slow because.. it's Claremont and this place just opened.
The opener was Wendel Duppert.. He was sooo funny! Things were looking pretty good, and I was glad that we spontaneously decided to come to the show. Wendel is a gay comedic, and of course he took a number of jabs at himself.. Having a gay best friend especially helped me appreciate all the jokes Wendel had up his sleeve.. He spoke to the crowd a bunch of times, but wasn't one of those annoying, "I'm going to insult everyone single person in here." Then, Tom Clark came up.. and he was just as, if not funnier than Wendel.. I hate explaining stand up jokes because they're all usually a bad version, you just had to be there. I would definitely come back here.. Especially since I live so close. Glad to see more nightlife happenings in Claremont. (Oh, believe me.. the comedians also made fun of Claremont.)
