I cannot believe I lived in Whitehouse for 5 years and didn't know about this place! Â Come on guys - get out there and advertise!!!
Intended to just stop in for a beer and an app. Â Ended up staying for 2 beers a piece, 2 apps and 1 entree b/c the first app was so delicious. Â We had the tuna tartare, pulled pork taco and buttermilk fried chicken which came with mac n cheese and green beans. Â Everything was absolutely delcious! Â
I see that many people complain about the price. Â let me tell you this...you get what you pay for. Â You may be able to go down the road a bit and save yourself $2 - $3 per app/entree but the food quality is not nearly this good and the ambiance is not as classy as it is here. Â Also, this is not the "middle of nowhere". Â Easy access to Rt 78 & Rt 22. Â About 20 minutes from Somerville NJ. Â
You have to try this place out!!! Â Will not be disappointed! Â Can't wait to go back!
Yummy food--I like it best when someone else is paying, though. A bit pricey.
The menu options are very interesting, but somewhat limited. I'd recommend checking it out online before you go to make sure that there's something there that you'll like. I've never had something there that I didn't really like, but there have been several seasons when we just didn't go, because the menu didn't appeal to me at all.
Service is fairly slow. Setting is nice. This is a good place for when you want to enjoy a nice meal, but are also looking forward to spending plenty of time with the your dinner companions for a leisurely evening.
Had lunch here a few times...grilled chicken over spinach with pistachios and blackberries - good, but the chicken was dry and tasted like it was reheated. Not acceptable at a restaurant of this level. Also, I came by for lunch at about 10 minutes before opening (noon) and the woman there basically blew me off when I asked what time they opened....here's an idea: "we open in ten minutes sir would you like to wait at the bar until then?". I ended up going to another restaurant.
Review Source:The atmosphere can be cozy. The food is really expensive and while it was tasty, it didn't live up to standards to justify the price. Went with a friend who highly recommended and I was just satisfied. The french onion soup was probably the highlight of my meal (would order again but not for $11!). The baby greens salad was tasty, the scallops in brown butter with lobster quinoa was decent and the butterscotch bread pudding wasn't too sweet which i appreciated.
May go back if the prices drop.
I ate with a colleague at the Fox & Hound in Lebanon, NJ, yesterday evening.
I had the Oven Roasted Chilean Sea Bass (not an environmentally sound choice, I know, since it has an "Avoid" recommendation from the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch). Â This fish was properly seasoned and cooked - with a good taste and texture. Â The dish came with some littleneck clams, which were fine, and some pasta and green beans. Â The kitchen used too much butter or oil for me, such that the pasta and green beans on the bottom were so drenched in butter and/or oil that I couldn't eat them.
My colleague had the Wild Boar Ragu, which he enjoyed (and polished off).
For dessert, I had the Butterscotch Bread Pudding. Â It was moist, tasty, and not too sweet. Â I'm not usually keen on desserts, but I enjoyed this one.
My colleague had the Crème Brulée, which he said was very good.
The Fox & Beaver has a fairly traditional English pub feel (particularly on the side of the building with the bar, which was where we were seated). Â The service was friendly and efficient.
The prices weren't bad - the total for the two of us without drinks was $74 before tip.
I'd be happy to go back if in the area.
I was very disappointed in this place. Â It took almost 2 hrs. to get our food and when we did it was cold. Â If the service would have been faster (considering is was not crowded at all) and the food hot or even warm it would not have been a bad experience. Â The staff acted as if they just did not care. Â I have a feeling there was no manager there that night (1/9/2012). Â I hope the owner see this post!
Review Source:My wife and I visited Fox & Hound for dinner on Halloween, while we were staying at a local hotel during the extended JCP&L blackout.
We sat in the dining room, although the bar area looked comfortable as well. Â Our waitress was a bit weird and not very prompt with service.
My wife ordered the Angus burger and I had the chicken wrap. Â The burger was almost tasteless. Â However, the chicken was nicely grilled and the wrap was pretty good.
We did not stay for dessert. Â My wife said what I was already thinking...
We won't be back.
Came here for lunch because my dad would not stop raving about the pulled pork tacos. He was not wrong, they are really tasty with just the right amount of kick. Very generous portion for an appetizer. The avocado really makes it. I could have done without the fried shells though. Also got the baby greens salad. Another great portion and very good. Very cool ambiance with good service. Definitely recommend!
Review Source:Should you find yourself in the Central/Western Jersey metropolis of Lebanon, the Fox & Hound Tavern is great spot to keep in mind for a fine meal or a few drinks.
My girlfriend and I were in town for a friend's wedding, and they hosted a "welcome party" for all the out-of-town guests the night before the big extravaganza. Girlfriend and I decided to pop in an hour early to have a light dinner before hand, so that we wouldn't have to constantly accost the hors d'oeuvres carriers. It was a great decision. We shared the fried calamari (mmmm, tentacles!) and split the salmon, which was perfectly cooked -- a nice crispy outside and flaky in the middle.
The party took place on the back patio, which was also really nice. My only complaint was that it was pretty infested with mosquitoes. I guess there's not much that they can do to stop them on an early-summer evening, though. The bartenders were nice, the beer selection was good, and the prices were cheap (compared to NYC!).
Fox & Hound has a great charm to it with its rustic, old inn kind of vibe. I seriously doubt I'll ever be back in that neck of the woods, but if I am, a stop at F&H will definitely be in order.
There are 4 reasons to visit The Fox & Hound: Bill, Bill, the food & Bill. The service overall is very good. Attentive, interested & willing to go the extra mile to make you happy. But that's all pretty useless if the FOOD isnt worth it. It absolutely is, it's consistently good and adjusted to the  seasons with enough creativity to intrigue. I've seen a few reviews complaining about price, I'm not sure where they are eating where the food, wine & service are this good, every time.
(tip: deal with the staff only! never ask for the manager or owner. he clearly has not taken the same course in customer service & the hospitality industry that the staff has)
The wine list is excellent. They had some interesting choices, including an unoaked chardonnay, an albarino, a gruner veltliner -- all by the glass. I ordered mussels (half portion) and it was plenty for a meal and nice tasting too. I had a salad as well, but did not really need that (I have a small
appetite) -- salad was delicious too. I was staying at a hotel down the road and walked there. When the owner (very pleasant and friendly man) realized that I was going to walk back, he requested one of his staff (very friendly person Carrie) to drive me!! It was just a short walk, but it was dark and they did not want me to cross the highway at night. I told them I would be fine because the street was well light and there was a cross-walk and lights, but they insisted. That level of service deserves more stars than available on this site. In fact, service was tops all around. I was alone and the hostess noticed I had a book with me and asked if I wanted a table with a light and she really made an effort to make me comfortable. When I could not decide between two wines, the waitress brought me a little of each to decide. I hope I can come back to Lebanon NJ to dine here again.
My company hosted a conference in Lebanon this past year, and Fox and Hound set our party up in their upstairs dining quarters for our traditional dinner on the evening following our conference events. It would take me about 5 hours to drive here from my home, but I would be a much more frequent guest if it lived any closer!
Everything on the menu looked and sounded wonderful, and everything I tried certainly lived up to my expectations. I thought the food and service were both magnificent, and the staff was wonderful.
Some colleagues and I shared some after-dinner drinks in the downstairs bar area, so I can say with conviction the atmosphere of the whole restaurant is absolutely charming. I will be back.
I would say 3.5 stars is about right...
I have been here quite a few times since it is one of my friend's regular hang out. soooooo... whenever i visit him usually we hit up he fox and hound.
First off... I will have to say that Bill the bartender gets a 5 stars. The atmosphere there is nice too with a lot of regulars there. I only visit my friend once every 2 or so months and always see many of the same faces.
On to the FOOD! :P i guess for me it is always about the food :) it can make or break a place for me. The food here is actually pretty good. Cooked well and quite tasty... My issue with the place is the $$$ PRICE. First off... this place is out in the sticks and the food isn't that incredible for the price that you have to pay. Maybe it is because there are a lot of rich people in the surrounding area that just don't mind throwing away their money for something you can get better quality and better price even in NYC for, i am assuming, convenience. I don't know.... but for the prices that you pay for at the Fox and Hound the meal should be nothing less than orgasmic, which it is not.
if you are in the area and feel like spending tons of $$$ it isn't horrible.... but i would say this is not a place that you need to go out of your way for.
I will be returning though because it is the watering hole that my good friend frequents a lot.
Really great food, a nice group of regulars and a great wait staff. Â The old Inn building has been remodeled wonderfully. On occasion they have live music and in the summer there is very nice outdoor seating and an outdoor bar. Â A bit of a cougar scene sometimes at the outdoor and indoor bars too. If you like the "Tewks", you'll love this place. Â Many regulars frequent both. Overall, great!
Review Source:The Fox and Hound Tavern is a new bonus to my less than frequent visits to my wonderful, 90 year old grandmother. My father first took her to this charming, incredibly well restored Lebanon Hotel several years ago and he came back raving about the food. Of course, i had to try it. Located around the corner from my grandmother, the beautiful building is home to some great food. I have been able to try their specials and their menu is constantly changing (a refreshing change from other restaurants in the neighborhood). I have had incredible grouper, perfectly cooked scallops with brown butter, spinach and lobster quinoa, bbq pork tenderloin with black beans and rice, hummus ravioli. Their salads are beautifully done and quite large. Their desserts are creative and not too sweet. Everything is fresh and the service is great.
Now, if only I lived closer.
My husband and I had a quiet lunch during the week. Â No need for reservations. Â Food was good. Â He has the onion soup was was deemed very good, and we both had sandwiches. Â He had the club which came with home made potato chips - chips were fantastic. Â I had the Reuben which came with fries.. Reuben was very good, but fries were not crisp enough. Â Husband was disappointed they did not give refill on his very small serving of ginger ale. Â I think the entree prices were a little steep for lunch, so we avoided those. Â The restaurant has great lighting, which makes a difference. Â And its a beautiful old building. Â They seem to want to seat people close together, so don't be afraid to ask for a different table if you don't like where they seat you. Â I think that with a few more touches, restaurant could go to five stars.
