I have experienced nothing but great customer service here, and the food has been great.  Even as pescetarians, my husband and I have been able to find food that we want to eat at this German restaurant.  The beers are fun, and the food seems authentic, and the building is amazing how it was restored.  I like how all the servers and staff were German gear (Lederhosen) and also I believe they have a nice big parking lot and shuttle people up to the Britt Festival in the summer---so that is a sweet option.  It is slightly expensive, even for Jacksonville.

Amazing food and fantastic atmosphere!  We are visiting from California and will make this place a stop whenever we are up!

This place has good food. I think I *might* have a heart attack from the grease but it was certainly tasty.

I had the baked trout stuffed with mushroom and bread crumbs (and although it wasn't on the menu, bacon, as well). I had my choice of two sides and I chose the red cabbage (sweet and slightly pickly) and the potato salad.

Friends had the taster platter with bratwurst, deep fried organs and ham. They also had a couple of pretzels, deep fried sausage and a flight of beer.

I've never been to Germany but I bet this place is pretty authentic. The decor is German, German music and tons of German beers available. Plus the setting is very cute in an old schoolhouse in historic Jacksonville.

The servers were VERY friendly and eager to accommodate our vegan friends.

A must-stop place in Oregon for those who enjoy German food and culture. My wife and I stopped by on our way to central Oregon, and we found the place, the atmosphere and the food delightful. Easily the best German food experience we have found outside Germany or Austria.

Wow has this place gone downhill!  Stopped in for lunch the other day, after expressing to our waitress that we were on a time constraint, it took over 20 minutes to take our order, then another 40 for our food to arrive. When this was mentioned, we were very rudely told "this is not a fast food joint, so that was not an unreasonable wait time.  Usually it's much longer". It took one of our party to complain for our food to be brought out, each item was just throw on the plate without care and sloppily assembled - we ordered a variety of their sandwiches off the lunch menu. I won't be going again. Staff was way to rude to warrant another chance.

Having been exposed to great German food by my boyfriend's German father. Having eaten great German food in Germany I came to Frau Kemmling's with an opened and excited mind. I think it's great having a German restaurant in Southern Oregon and was looking forward to what Frau Kemmling had to offer. I was pleased to see the menu lists many classic dishes. They also support local breweries which is a solid star out of the three I gave Frau Kemmling. Half a star goes to the beautiful scenery and location, which was lovely.

The food: I have very particular food restrictions but was able to mix and match plenty of items on the menu for a satisfying meal. I started with an apfelschorle which isn't on the menu and is just apple juice and soda water, a very popular German beverage. I half expected the server to know what this was but wasn't offended when I had to explain it to her. I ordered the Räucherlachs Platte which came with a generous, beautiful portion of smoked salmon (1/2 a star right there), the gurken salat was a nice accompaniment to the salmon. The horseradish sauce was however lacking in flavor and zing. Maybe they could try the freshly grown horseradish grown not too far down the road in Tulelake California? The pumpernickel bread I passed on due to a gluten allergy but my dining companions found it enjoyable. I paired this plate with two sides to make it more of a meal and selected the red cabbage and boiled new potatoes with mushroom gravy. I love red cabbage and have been lucky enough to date a man that makes it often but Frau Kemmlings red cabbage was lacking. This is not a complicated dish to make yet it lacked dimension. It lacked the sweetness from the apple and the slight sourness from the fermented cabbage followed by the mellow warmth of the wine and spices. Mostly it was a bowl of sad limp soggy cabbage. The new potatoes were all wrong. I was surprised to see they had been boiled with their skin on. I'm not opposed to potato skin but I love boiled new potatoes for their shiny white complexion and soft velvey starchiness. These potatoes were drier than than the dirt they came out of. Glad I ordered the mushroom gravy because it was a nice surprise. I was half expecting brown gravy with a few flimsy, soggy mushrooms but the mushrooms were firm, meaty and abundent (1/2 a star!). My boyfriend ordered  Sauerbraten which is a dish that takes days to marinate which is also expressed in their description of it. This sauerbraten tasted rushed and not at all saur. All I tasted in my bite was the starchiness of the flour used to thicken the sauce. The potato salad was bland and not at all vinegary. The white cabbage salad was dry and lacked in flavor. My final half a star goes to the streudel which had lovely layers and flavor.

The Service: I don't expect servers in America working in a German restaurant to speak German but I do give them props for trying which is a fun touch. However we weren't speaking German when we had to ask for a high chair 3 different times.  Our bill was incorrect when it was delivered and please oh please save the kitschy lederhosen and dirndl for Oktoberfest, it just looks forced.

It's really unfortunate, but things have gone downhill to the point where last night will probably be my last visit, of many visits, to this establishment until things improve dramatically.

Came in last night to sit down for a beer and a gyro as I have frequently done for almost two years. Come to find out that not only are there only two beers on tap (there are usually six or more), but Micha, the bartender, Stein Club founder and major "face" of the establishment has been fired for unknown reasons. It might have been just me, but the place seemed much less organized and put together than usual, and the great, homey atmosphere that was such a major part of the place before is all but dead.

A local business owner has informed me that Micha's departure occurred in conjunction with the hiring of a new restaurant manager, formerly employed by the Jacksonville Inn and recently terminated from the same on grounds of personal impropriety. I'm sure there are more details of which I am unaware, but the entire situation is disappointing and, from a community standpoint, reflects negatively on the character of the Schoolhaus' owners.

As I mentioned, unless things somehow improve, I won't be returning, nor will I referring my clients here or attending any future Stein Club events. I'm very sad that things have changed so drastically for the worse and I don't predict the changes bode well for the establishment's future, and I know I will miss it.

I had been afraid to try Frau Kemmling's again because of our server experience and the experience of so many other patrons. However, the draw of sausage, kraut, and schnitzel brought us back this past Saturday evening.

The food was just as good as before (minus the spaetzle, which I do NOT care for here). This time were ordered the breaded and fried sausage as an app and we LOVED it. I didn't discover the tasty kraut underneath it until it was nearly too late. I made up for it though.

As for the service, I can tell you that this restaurant could use a little help in the organization department. I've watched enough Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares to declare that the owner needs to make a plan and stick with it. As it stands, she acts as a waitress, hostess, and boss. This combo does not bode well in the restaurant biz. You can't do it all, lady, no matter how nice you are. Trying only results in a confused waitstaff and lonely customers.

She was our waitress both times and both times it seemed like there was something more exciting going on in whatever room we weren't in. She was nice enough, just absent.

Stopped in for lunch on our way south and were very pleased.  We love German food and couldn't believe we found such a jewel in such a lovely local.  Definitely plan to return for dinner (perhaps Octoberfest?) with it's more extensive menu.  Nevertheless, we enjoyed our sausages and omelet, beer, and wine.  Stopped on the way out and picked up a few yummy desserts to bring home.  Prices were very reasonable and service was very friendly and efficient too.

Frau Kemmling's Schoolhaus Brewhaus is located in the basement of an old elementary school in Jacksonville.  The site is located in the middle of  a schoolyard and play fields,  and the school itself is an old, brick building, and there's even a gym, for special events (e.g. the fall Oktoberfest!).  They have done a wonderful job inside, which includes a luncheon area, confectionery, pub and dining room-all decorated appropriately German style.  Even the wait staff is in costume!  There are patio dining areas front and back for nice weather times.

Had some beers in the pub while waiting for our table; they were great and the bartender was helpful in making our selection.  At dinner we both had a different variety of schnitzel with a couple of different sides.  They were good and the portions were huge. Not a particular fan of German food, I guess I would describe the food food as being in the "comfort food" category;  ample, satisfying and okay on occasion.   It was fun.

Our first time here and will be our last.  Service sucks.  The bartender was terrible and the irish coffee was unremarkable.  My husband's beer was not what he wanted and when he went to get it corrected, the bartender's attitude was unreasonable.

Nice atmosphere, decent food with different choices than the usual place, good beer. Its a little expensive and the service is inconsistent.

Just got back from dinner here. The atmosphere is nice but the service is lacking. My husband and I have given the standard three tries and have yet to have a decent meal. The food tastes like it's been warmed in a microwave. A little better than Denny's with a German flavor. Won't be going there again or recommending. I suggest you go to the Back Porch instead always fresh and wonderful.

This place is pretty unique for these parts. It's a German pub built in an old schoolhouse. It's off the beaten path in Jacksonville, but worth finding. They did a fabulous job renovating it to be a pub, complete with wood built-in shelves, hand-carved wooden chairs, and a great bar. There was live music as well.

We started with the pretzel. This thing was literally the size of a dinner plate-- and so so good. We devoured it. It came with 3 mustards. I will always order this when I come here going forward. We also had some really nice German beers on tap. They offer a good selection!

We got the cheese and sausage platter and it was ok. While I ate most of it, I probably would try something else next time, like the cheese fondue or the German potato pancakes with apples. I'm a bit of a cheese snob and their selection could have been a little more diversified, I think?

We did get the apple strudel with ice cream and it was tasty. I really wanted the German chocolate cake, but my sweetie dug in his heels and insisted on the strudel. Next time, I shall get my way! :)

Overall, this is a fun little joint-- it's different and the space has a lot of history behind it. I enjoyed my time here.

Admittedly, German is never my first choice in international cuisine, despite a great meal I had in Frankfurt a few years ago. Germans just aren't known for their cuisine like other nationalities (it's probably the real reason Germans flooded the new world in droves over time, hehe). With that as my premise, even the best of bratwurst & kraut might earn 3-4 stars. I do like the setting of the Bigham Knoll campus where I believe the restaurant owner's step father owns the property. Alas, nepotism at it's best...the restaurant just seems out of place. A kindergarten, international business school, and a German restaurant? It all has me scratching my head, but you should come out for a try and decide for yourself.  If nothing else, come for Oktoberfest, which seems to be when this place shines brightest.

One star is in all honesty about six stars too many. Yelp really does need to establish a negative star system for me to honestly and fairly describe my experience at this establishment.

I had what was in all likelihood my single worst dining experiences ever at Frau Kemmiling Schoolhaus Brewhaus. It began with a long, awkward and uncomfortable wait, (before finally being seated at a table that had been vacant for the entire time we had been waiting). The experience progressed to food that was QUITE a bit less than fresh (read this as "rotten"), that was served cold (okay, tepid) and wasn't even remotely like the menu description. Their solution? They actually BLAMED ME for not specially requesting that my meal actually be prepared in the manner described on the menu.. That is nothing but a "major fail" in my mind.

I can understand a restaurant having a bad night. I can even come to terms with this bad night happening at the end of a bad week. I can understand a kitchen even being out of some items, and being forced to make some substitutions. I can even understand a place having a couple of staff members that might be having bad nights and having their own breakdowns/meltdowns.. I've done my time in the kitchen (5 years), and as a server on the floor (2 years), so I really do understand that bad things (even VERY bad things) can occasionally happen in a restaurant, just like in any other business.. I really can be a VERY understanding restaurant patron.... But this was way, way over the top.

I was actually moved to send a lengthy letter to the management concerning the absolutely miserable experience my wife and I suffered.. I sent this letter well over a month ago, and I have received no response at all from anyone at the "Schoolhaus Brewhaus". After allowing the management what feels like more than ample opportunity to respond and to possibly address some of my issues, I am now prepared to post this review.

I was sincerely hoping that I could at least add a comment along the lines of 'after hearing of my unpleasant experience I received a gracious and thoughtful letter from the management apologizing for the miserable experience that my wife and I suffered, and I'll consider a return visit because of it', but sadly I cannot, as no reply has been issued. I really can't help but feel that if a customer takes the time to send a four page letter (or a letter of any length) describing the miserable treatment they suffered at the hands of your staff, that the management of the establishment should at least have the backbone to send some sort of reply. Even a curt, brief and nasty note that read 'my staff handled things the way I would have, and I do not feel your criticisms are valid' would demonstrate that the owner/management cared at least some small fractional amount about their establishment and their guests' experiences, but apparently they really can't be troubled to care at all.

So, after being asked to personally shoulder the burden for my bad experience in-house, the concluding implied message that I get from the owner/manager is "I really don't even care about that, or you". Viel glück mit, dass.

One star is too generous for the experience I had there last night. I hope I came on an off night because this was probably the worst restaurant experience I have ever had.  It's going to take me a long time to get over it.

Here it is. We came in the bar entrance and were confused as to where to go to get a table as there weren't any tables in the bar. Finally a staff member pointed us over to the hostess. She encouraged us to go sit in the bar but upon another trip over there, there still weren't any seats. No big deal we put our names on the list.

We waited about 10-15 minutes for a table. Then they put us in the tiny table by the kitchen/pass. We asked for another table as there wasn't much room but the only other table was by a banquet table full of little boys. :-(

It took our server about twenty-thirty minutes to come over to us. My companion asked about the Pilsner and the server kept trying to explain what a Pilsner was. Both me and my companion are well educated about beer styles so my companion kept asking 'what kind? what kind' while the server kept trying to explain what a Pilsner was. No big deal. We got the beer and it was delicious.

I ordered a salami & cheese pizza while my vegetarian companion ordered Gefüllte Forelle. It took a long time to get the food. It seemed like the servers were very disorganized. I never got a refill on my water despite several support staff members walking by our table numerous times. We heard the kitchen say "hot food up and its dying. Can we get a runner over here?" Of course it was our food. :-)

My pizza was horrible. It was cold and the bottom was doughy. I mean like not cooked. My companion removed the skin from his trout and instantly I could smell it. Not like good fresh trout. Like old, fishy trout. We both were starting to get upset at the service and cold food so we tried to make the best of it. My companion squeezed his lemon on the fish and this seemed to make it a bit better. Until he found the trout was stuffed with pancetta.

My companion asked the server why the trout was stuffed with pancetta when the menu description said nothing about pork. I mean it was a good question when you are paying $18 for a fillet of fish. The server explained that they couldn't list all  of the ingredients in the dish. I found this explanation to be rather poor. My companion explained that he was a vegetarian and while he ate fish didn't eat pork, beef, or fowl. The server said that my companion should have requested no pancetta but my companion explained that the description on the menu didn't include pancetta. The server said the kitchen could make another dish without pancetta but my companion was irritated and kept saying no. The server left our table and went over to the kitchen. The chef told her it would take 20 minutes to make another dish as they were slammed. The server came back over to us and told us it would take '10-15 minutes to make another dish.' Once again my companion said 'no. I don't want another one'.

I ate half of my pizza and kept expecting it to get better. It didn't. It was undercooked. The server asked if I wanted a box and for the first time in my LIFE I said no. Then the server said 'your fish will be ready in just a minute'. My companion said "I told you I didn't want it." The server ran back to the kitchen where we heard an angry "Are you serious? It's just about ready." The server came back and said "Do you want to take it in a box?" My companion said again, "I told you I don't want it." The chef was talking so loud about our table and not wanting the fish, that we could hear him. I was mortified. What had we done wrong?

The server walks into the kitchen talking in a low voice. The chef yells "What kind of a vegetarian orders fish?" I was getting more horrified by the minute. I asked my companion to hurry up and finish his beer. I just wanted to get out of there. We could see the chef walking back and forth glaring at us while my companion quickly finished his beer. I had to request my tab from the server who --- get this--    charged us for the trout!!

I was not about to pay for it! My companion requested that a manager come over which she did quickly. We explained what happened and once again were told that the menu couldn't list all ingredients. We were given the bill sans the trout, paid, and got the f- out of there.

I'm a chunky girl. I love food. I don't ask for much. But when you are charging $18 for a fillet of fish, you provide a list of proteins. You provide a description of why I should pay $18 for trout! As a restaurant you also treat customers better than we were treated. It's gonna take me a long time to get over this one. Service sucked, food sucked, and hearing the chef $hit talk you = The worst restaurant experience ever. I'd rather go to Taco Bell. At least I know I'm paying for $hit.

My hubby and I LOVE this place. I gave it 4 stars because they're a little too pricey and that's what holds us back from going there more often. But, the atmosphere, food, and beer is great! The waitresses all have been very nice. If you're not in the mood for authentic German food, their German Pizza is good and normal. My hubby loves their spatzel. The apple strudel is delicious and highly recommended ala mode!

The ambiance is fun, desserts are great, beer is wonderful. Been there for dinner or lunch 4 times, tried different dishes and won't dine there again. The food always tastes a little off. I have been to Germany and had many wonderful meals that tasted fresh and distinctive. Can't quite put my finger on it but just don't care for their recipes.  Asked around town and consensus is go for beer and a pretzel and then eat downtown.  Have to say the wait staff and bar staff are terrific.

Food was good.  Apple strudel especially noteworthy.
Only issue was the wine (described below).  We ate here before attending the Britt Festival, and were able to leave our car at the restaurant as they shuttled us to the festival location.  Very convenient.

Wine list was not only weak, but the Pinot Noir the waitress recommended (claiming a couple had drank it just two nights previously) was "out of production".  So they searched for either of the two other Pinot Noirs on the list.  Took 15 minutes to find a single bottle that was buried somewhere in the store, and it finally arrived after we received dinner.

Poster in the men's restroom was worth almost half-a-star itself.

Wonderful atmosphere, and friendly staff. The food was rather disappointing. I had a poorly butchered fatty rib eye that had not been seasoned at all. My sides were enjoyable The warm red cabbage was tasty, and so were the potato dumplings. My husband got the sauerbraten (a sour roast) and while he enjoyed it the waitress suggested two very sour sides the white cabbage, and german tater salad. A plate full of sour food is not very satisfying.
We were also disappointed by the name. When you hear brewhaus you expect they brew their own beer, but this is not the case they only have German import beers on tap. I also think the waitresses costumes were a little hoaky and demeaning.

Having lived in America for 13 years now I would say this is one of the most authentic German restaurants and the German radio outside adds a very nice touch. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to try German cuisine. The pretzels are amazing and the potato salad reminded me of home.

Great German beer. Mediocre German food. Nice setting overlooking Jacksonville. It can be noisy on a Stein Club induction night and the bar is next to the seating area in back. It is more quiet if you sit up front.
Have a stein of the Dunkel, if like dark beer, along with a pretzel and then head into town for dinner

Ah, the Brewhaus.  I can honestly say that there is no place in town (including Medford) where, like that famed bar in Boston, "Everyone Knows Your Name" after a few visits.  The family-like atmosphere is captured at Frau Kemmlings...especially through their prestigious "Stein Club".

The atmosphere immediatley brings me back to my many trips to Bavaria including the traditional garb of the staff.  The menu is a bit of a Rosetta Stone (German-English Translation Included) of Bavarian cuisine with many items not to be missed.

Their Wurst selection (sausages) is tremendous. Imported from a German Sausage-Maker, now living in the Northwest.  My personal favorite is the Spicy Krakauer! For dinner my favorites are the Wienar Schnitzel (breaded pan fried pork cutlet) and the star of the Frau...the Schweinehaxe (Pork Knuckle with Knodel dumplings).  The Schweinhaxe is only available after 5 PM and goes quickly!

So, whether you are a fan of German cuisine...or want to try something new! I encourage you to visit Frau Kemmlings.   When the weather is nice, there is NOTHING like sitting outside in their every expanding biergarten...  Prost!

I have been here several times. Mostly for the beer and sausages and the atmosphere. We love the spatzle with cheese and ham and  I'm a big fan of the meatloaf. And did I mention beer and sausage and sauerkraut and red cabbage etc etc. All we need now is an outdoor beer garden for summer time. Ein Prosit to the staff.

The German Restaurant. A dining experience under-appreciated by those of us who live on the West Coast.

I mean who planning dinner says let's go out for German tonight or Let's send for takeout-- Knackwursts and cabbage.

When I lived in Reno, we went to Bavarian World and it was, for those who desired German fare, literally the only game, not only in town but within 300 miles of town! My cultural heritage comes from Germany and I love a good Bratwurst, Kohl, Kartoffel, and Bier. (Sausage, Cabbage, Potatoes, and Beer)

So, with excitement, my wife and I headed off to the newly opened Frau Kemmlings Schoolhouse Brewhaus in Jacksonville.
I had no idea this restaurant was in the works, (I drive through Jacksonville every week to visit my folks), and located in a recently closed elementary school's cafeteria, it is off the beaten touristy path.

The owners have done a great job with the ambiance and it is a classy spot. I love books, and the used textbooks on the bookshelf theme for decoration worked well for me. The atmosphere is laid out like a trad. German Beer Hall.

The service was prompt and friendly. They dress in Trad. German outfits and it makes for a fun environment.

They accept reservations and we made one--they were slow that night, but still a good idea to have a reserved seat when you go.

    Now to the food:

I ordered Knackwurst, cabbage, beer and potato pancakes for an appetizer.
My wife ordered the spaetzle and ham.

The potato pancakes were pricey ($6) for a tiny portion. They are artfully served on a garnished plate ala bistro style and are covered in warm applesauce. But something was off that night. I think it was an  error on the chef's part, because they had a very strong spice (nutmeg I think) flavor and I think someone poured a whole bottle of the stuff in and served it. They were borderline inedible.
I would not order this dish again to give a second chance because I felt the price was a tad much for the portion served.

The main course was a lot better. My Knackwurst was grilled just right and tasty. I read that they use a Seattle-based supplier for their sausages. The cabbage needed a little help. I think it was more Sauerkraut than trad. German boiled cabbage. My beer was a German brand ( I forgot the name since I ate here over a month ago) and was good.
I also wish they had a better selection of mustard. (The German restaurant in Reno provided a curry mustard that was phenomenal!)

I had one gripe with our meal: German fare is famous for its fresh-baked bread. Please provide some with the entree. Even if it means raising the price to have a loaf for the table. It is worth it.

My wife's Spaetzle and Ham was good--A little oily and needed some seasoning with the salt shaker--but hearty and a generous portion.

Prices are reasonable for Jacksonville--I think we spent  $35 for two and that included drinks and appetizer.

I plan to go back again. They are the only game in town when I feel my heart beat a Polka rhythm and I have to go and satisfy it with some sausage and beer!
