Food has always been pretty good here. Ambiance is nice for a date, and I enjoy the live music. I don't particularly care for the bartenders.

Friar Tuck's is by no means a GREAT restaurant, food-wise, & if we had more choices in the area, we would probably not come here as much as we do.

However, it's consistently the most rewarding dining experience in Nevada City, for the following reasons:

    1) Servers are great. They definitely have that "folksy" NC vibe, but they're not brusque and disinterested as is par for the course in most Nevada County joints. They're the GOOD kind of informal - not easy to pull off but they do.

    2) Food is reliable. No, it's not going to blow your mind, but the burger is actually excellent, and the "light fare" dishes (chicken picatta, marsala, etc.) are - while not even remotely LIGHT (lotta butter, folks...) - consistently well-prepared and tasty.

They also are the only place around that has OYSTERS - & they're pretty decent. Major plus.

    3) They're one of the few restaurants in NC/GV (maybe the only?) that has a full bar as well. Being able to have cocktails with dinner is another major plus, that also adds a degree of sophistication to the atmosphere. They also have a great beer and wine list.

    4) The place is fun. Seriously, it's just a kick to hang out there. There's lots of funny little nooks and crannies with tables tucked into them, the front room has some neat circular booths... it's a comfortable layout.

    5) The bar. There's music in there every night, & the best musicians in the area play here. Plus, the folks who hang out in the bar are just hilarious. It's usually an older crowd, with an interesting mix of funky and affluent, & it always just has that hard-to-put-your-finger-on, welcoming quality that makes a bar great.

Bottom line: The crowd is fun, the staff is friendly, the place is comfy... the vibes are just good in Friar Tuck's. Food-wise it doesn't quite touch New Moon, & it's definitely expensive, but I kinda feel like Friar Tuck's represents the best of the real Nevada County culture (such as it is). It's an eclectic mix of oddball folks having a great time together. THAT is what we love about this area.

We'll definitely miss FT's when we leave.... lots of fun nights had here.

A Yelp of Friar Tucks is a Yelp upon God Himself.

When in early dating, My Wife-to-Be  grabbed me across the  table and   first kissed me there; months later  I tried hard to muster the courage to   propose an offer of marriage to her there but failed ; (  I did it hours later kneeled on her kitchen floor)  the place burned down and has since reincarnated even more magnificent;   Friars is still  it, and we all know it.
OK OK  they are not  as good as they used to be; The beginnings of what we have today involve  Sandy  the Chef  (female demi-goddess of culinary wonder BTW) who designed the timeless menu they still have  from before the moon had craters on it, who left the framework for which the rest of us humble mortals may wander in and for  a small fee partake in truly fine cuisine and I do mean cuisine.
I am going to avoid the deep review on this one.  The only reason they don't get a 5 star is because they aren't what they once were long ago. But the place burned down and the economy has changed! Also there was no Yelp or internet, (or me) back then, but I'm sure back then  they got a five star, for sure.
    Personal recommendations:
    The Entire Menu:  But .....
Southwest Seafood pasta:   I made it my life's work to copy it.
    Bourbon St. Filet
The  Steamed  Clam appetizer -Holy Shit!
The Lamb:  -even if you don't enjoy Lamb
    Fondue:  UNBELIEVABLE!!!
    WINE WINE WINE.

This is the place to eat and drink  in Nevada City .

This is a fun place that we have liked since we first visited Nevada City.  It's a bit of a local institution and it gets points in my book for being a place that has served fondue since the early 70s.  I grew up on fondue as a kid and my family has always eaten it periodically on fun occasions at home - my parents have a few fondue sets - and was excited to find a real fondue place from the 70s.  Other food we've had is good, too.  It's a nice place, too, and is in the heart of downtown - but then almost everything in Nevada City is downtown.   Bear in mind that it is pretty expensive, though, and except for the fondue is a bit on the expensive side for what you get.

    Good food and live music.

Make a reservation if you want to eat in the restaurant.  The bar area is first come first serve with a limited menu.  The food is good.  The beer choices could be better

I really enjoyed this place. After reading all the reviews that made fun of the bread sticks, I knew that I wanted to see what everyone was talking about... and I have to agree with what most people have previously written. This is one of the nicer restaurants in the area and one that is not cheap, so why do they offer such cheesy (not flavored) pre-dinner snacks. I would compare them to cheap bar snacks. This place could easily provide real bread sticks.
I was in a larger group and so I had the opportunity to observe multiple plates and I have to say that everything with the exception of the fondues appeared to be ordinary. Take home message: If you go, do the fondue which is what they are famous for. I did the cheese fondue as an appetizer, the bubbling oil one where you cook your own meat items for dinner and the chocolate fondue for dessert... Do the fondue... if not you will over pay for ordinary food and be disappointed.

We have become "regulars" probably due to the fact there is music every night in the bar.  We generally have appetisers in the bar and have found a new favorite...Mussels.  One has to get there early for a seat.

We have been coming here for years.  Always great food and a a good time.  Here for dinner on the Saturday Mardi Gras celebration.  We had a large group for dinner, fun and a good time  All ten of us couldn't rave enough about our meals.  Especially those who ordered the rack of lamb that was like no other.  The service couldn't have been any better either.  Our server Tina was fun, attentive and a pleasure.

I was soo tempted to give them another star to make it a whopping two star review since the food wasn't gross, just completely underwhelming and mediocre, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it, considering how bizarre our experience was for the prices.  First off, we walk in the door and a hostess is at the check-in desk; as soon as she sees us walk in, she goes into the back without acknowledging us.  No staff is around at all.  Ok, maybe she was called away briefly, so we wait.  And wait.  And wait.  Oh, someone is coming over, oh, not really, they went over to serve the bar side.  Then a patron walks out and comments to us quite cheerfully that we should just leave.  OK, that was weird.  As it has been at least 10-15min now, we are contemplating calling the restaurant from our cell phone just to see what happens, at this point we are more curious to see how bad it will get then how good.  Just then a hostess comes out to greet and seat us as if we had just walked in, no acknowledgment of the wait.  Whatever.

Seated and quite hungry, we look at our menus, we both have different wine menus.  Minor mess-up, but irritating when you are trying to figure out what they offer.  Breadsticks come, oh good!  We're starving!  Wait, just kidding, they can't even seem to do fresh breadsticks;  they're the bland, crunchy cracker ones you buy in bulk from a restaurant supply.  Come on, Tuck, you are a pricey, "classy", local place and you can't even match the Olive Garden's standard of fresh bread??

Food finally comes, very strange flavor combinations, I had a dish that was like a pasta version of nachoes, interesting.  Not wow.  My boyfriend's dish was very bland.  Our calamari seemed to be the frozen, pre-breaded kind, very greasy.

    I could go on, but I won't. I don't think I need to.

Everyone raves about the fondue, maybe that's where we went wrong;  after some mysterious staff issue had prevented our being welcomed or seated.  Who knows.  All I know is, there are so many great restaurants in Nevada City that I don't need to go back and find out.  Spend your money at New Moon or Ike's and get a much better experience.

One of the nicer restaurants you will come across.  Make sure to reserve in advance.

Gourmet food with top notch service best describes Friar Tuck's.

This place is famous for their fondue.  The hot bubbling oil, gooey cheese and bubbling chocolate.  There is also has some great Pasta dishes , Salads, Seafood / Meats and desserts .

This place has a huge wine list and a full bar  -- so get your drink on.  Drink up this might help you see past the high menu price$.  The price paid will end up being worth it ... Spoil yourself!!

I really love the bread-sticks with ranch. The ice tea is great!  And the Maui pie is spectacular.  The onion-bread is a little overpowering, but it is an interesting appetizer worth giving a shot.

Didn't even get to eat here, so my rating is based solely on how absolutely rude we were treated as soon as we walked in.  It was 37 minutes before the kitchen was closing.  I asked, just to be polite, if we were too late to be seated for dinner.  The hostess was standing there too, but a guy who was kind of dressed up, looking like a manager, said "We're actually trying to get closed up".  Where I'm from, people still have customer service skills and some respect.  If you want to eat here, get there a few hours before they close so you're not cutting into their precious after-closing partying time. Sorry to infringe on your Saturday night, Friar Tuck's! On the other hand, I've been wanting to eat here for years and now I have literally ZERO desire, and I didn't have to waste one hard-earned dollar to curb that curiosity.

Friar Tuck's has been a favorite since It opened too many years ago.  I've enjoyed fantastic steak ( smothered in blue cheese) and of course the fondue whenever I have the chance.  The wine list is lengthy, we always find something delicious to drink.  I tried to focus on the potatoes for Potato Girls, but I was too distracted by my great steak.
I always recommend Friar Tuck's with confidence.

This is the nicest restaurant around with great service, great atmosphere, and wonderful food!  They cook their meat to perfection and their fondue dinners are fabulous.

It is gourmet food, so they menu is smaller and prices higher, but if you are interested in fine dining this is the place to go.

We had dinner here last night. For years Friar Tuck's has always been a birthday destination.  We both work in the food industry and have always loved just coming in and having salads and apps.  However, last night was my loved ones birthday. We were seated within 15 minutes like she stated. Our table came with no silverware or napkins this went unnoticed up until after our onion bread (missing it's topping it was dry not the normal onion bread) was finished and salads finally came. It wasn't unusually busy in the dining room we were in had only 3 other tables - finished eating. Just very drunk and very loud. (which we understand).  Our salads were served and we had finally got our waitress back to ask her for napkins and silverware. This was the last time we saw her till the bill came.  We ordered The BUBBLE AND SQUEAK. We love the cheese fondue alot and wanted to do fondue for his birthday dinner. When asked if we wanted to add soup or salad to our meal that set us back a little since it came with our meal the last birthday we celebrated. We agreed to add salads we love the house dressing. I should tell you the BUBBLE AND SQUEAK comes cheese, hot oil and 2 champagne cocktails. I had ordered a champagne cocktail he ordered a vodka tonic. Not once did the waitress ask if we wanted another drink, but also, never offered us the 2 cocktails that come with dinner. She charged us for our drinks and never once before dumping the bill off acknowledge his birthday. Our bill was 91.00 for BUBBLE AND SQUEAK our 2 salads and dry onion bread.  We left so discouraged and disappointed that we don't know if we will even be coming back fo bar service. Felt like the service has gone really down hill and that's a shame Brian the chef is making great food. See we are in the industry and know the chefs, but the rest of the staff has to shine to make Brian's food experience a great one. Saw a newer bartender at kitchen entrance eating food off of other peoples dinners coming out yawning couldn't even cover his mouth. Then as the staff starting getting done they accumulated in the back loud drinking singing loudly (rudely).  Not a great night for us and I really hate saying this because I think Greg and Rona have done beautiful things there. The staff just needs to go back to be bussers and get real servers like they had before. Attentive and courteous servers are always a dining experience plus.
So I am giving our experience a star. This rating does not reflect the food since the only cooked items we had was onion bread and cheese fondue.  Last night was not worth our drive nor our money. Extremely disappointed!

Friar Tuck's is nestled in the heart of downtown Nevada City. It is easy to find, although you may find parking to be a bit more of a challenge. Parking is free after 6PM however.

I met a friend at Friar Tuck's, for drinks. We ended up ordered the escargot and steamed clams.

The escargot was drenched in garlic butter, and they were perfectly cooked. Served with toasted sourdough, it was a delectable treat. The snails were tender, not chewy at all. The steamed clams were well cooked and seasoned. However, they were full of grit, so I do not think they were properly soaked before steaming. If not for this, the dish would have been excellent.

We drank the pinot noir recommended by the bartender, who I assume was also the owner. He was very nice, and took the time to explain a few of the wines, which are all served by the glass. The prices are reasonable, for wine by the glass that is. The pours are full glasses, which I find unusual in NorCal.

The ambiance is nice and relaxing. It is a quiet atmosphere, but there is live music in the bar. The gentleman playing last night was excellent, and the music is not so loud that you can't have a quiet conversation. Kudos to Friar Tuck's for properly managing the sound levels!

I'd visit Friar Tuck's again, if not just to try their main entrees.

Last night I had my best meal so far in Nevada City at Friar Tuck's. We really enjoyed the nice, yet casual atmosphere. It's a lot warmer than Lefty's. We sat in the bar where a duo - Dave and Alice- were playing some excellent acoustic oldies. Our server Josh was exceptional. He was very professional yet made us feel super comfortable. My wife and I enjoyed a Robin Hood's Courage whiskey cocktail before dinner with tons of fresh pressed ginger. It was awesome but not for everyone.
I find it so difficult to find a knockout fish entree at a fine dining restaurant. Even at the most elegant places, more often than not I am served something which is either overcooked, overseasoned, completely boring or just ho-hum. Friar Tuck's prepared my Hawaiian Sea Bass special with tender love and care. It was on the small side, but with a piece of fish of this caliber, that didn't even bother me. The sides of green beans and rice pilaf were also as good as they could possibly be. Nothing about the plate was ordinary. Worth every penny of the $28 price tag.
We also enjoyed teriyaki steak, mussels, escargot and caesar salad. I look forward to going back to try the fondue. I am happy to know that I can get a "big city" meal in our little town.

So many choices in Nevada City!  We chose Friar Tucks because of the menu variety and enticing street frontage.  We were led to the main dining room which was both elegant yet just short of formal.  The tree in the center, 3/4 height walls, gentle lighting all worked to make it a very comfortable setting.

    Servers friendly and efficient.

French Onion Soup had to be sent right back to be heated further, but that happened pretty quickly.  Flavor was rich, a bit too salty.  The sesame breadsticks wait on the table with a ranch style tartar sauce dip, kinda strange, but I kept eating them.

Wife and I shared the spicy plum jam coated pork ribs.  They were spicy, they were plum coated, and they were awesome.  We couldn't finish a whole rack between the two of us - they were very meaty.

All said, the whole was greater than the sum of the parts, so we can't wait to go back.

First time there. Waitress tipped over a martini glass and chatters on the table. She took one dish back, but had we had to ask to take second plate that was also suspect.

We ordered the clam appetizer, and although I'm not a big fan of over buttered garlic bread, I asked for a few slices of "plain bread". We were accommodated, but I was also charged. Give me a break! You impressed me with your serving skills, but charge me for a pound of butter you could wring out in a grease pit on uneatable bread?

Atmosphere with the music in the bar area? If you don't like to talk and would rather shout to each other, then you'll like it.

Straight and to the point for us (then, you compare): we booked a reservation several days in advance (and glad we did). Friar Tuck's is (not only) popular - but a town institution.

Booth seating, bar seating and individual table seating. If you think ahead, ask for a seating location away from the two front doors (can be drafty and certainly cooler during the winter months.)

GREAT bar staff and quite-friendly locals seated at the bar stools. We made new friends ahead of our reservation time. Prices: fair, not overpriced. Full bar and great wines by the glass selections.

Friar Tuck's is noted for fondue. Consider also their various appetizer offerings but don't OVERload on ap/first course/entre. You will not be surprized by portions. We just happen to be a party of 4: 2 fondue request, one prime rib (nicely presented) and one chicken picata entre.

Team servicing us was great. Bravo.

Parking is street side and free/pay lots.

Total bill for four adults: $250.00 including several cocktails and wine-by-the-glass and gratuity.

We, indeed, will look forward to going again. Hope you have a pleasant experience, as we did!

Friar Tuck's is really a mixed bag.  There are some good things and some less desirable ones.

To start with the good the waitress we had was great.  Very attentive and fun to chat with.  The food is OK.  Not great but not bad.  We stuck with the fondue from start to finish.  We were pleased that the wine was reasonable priced.  Not huge markups that turn a $50 bottle into a $120.

It is a nice restaurant to relax in.  Total bill for a full meal and great bottle of wine and two hours of relaxing was $172.00 including the tip.

The bad.. the next night we though we would do it again.  We arrived just as they opened and asked for a booth.  The hostess looked around and then said that was not possible.  The reservation list was packed starting at about 6:30.  We arrived at 5:00 to an empty restaurant.  Plenty of time for us to eat before the crowd shuffles in.

My wife and I looked at each other and said thank you and walked out.  That was another $170 they missed out on.  The hostess was not the least bit concerned that this money was walking out the door.  She still gets paid right?

That really was the best thing to happen to us.  We decided to go to the Blue Moon instead.  Even thought we got there before the place opened they immediate showed us to a table where we have one of the best meals in a very long time.

Our thanks to the hostess that let us walk out of the door and dine at the Blue Moon.

I've been going to Friar Tuck's for about 25 years, since I was about 11 years old. Friar Tuck's has always been my favorite restaurant, even when we moved out of Nevada City. My family would make special trips just to go to this restaurant. My favorite has always been the Abbot's choice hot oil fondue. Sometimes my mom and I would get the Bubble and Squeak fondue which adds a course of cheese fondue.

It was my favorite restaurant...until last night...

Super excited to meet my family up there for dinner, everything seemed fine when we arrived. When we ordered, our server asked us "Does anyone want to add a soup or salad?" Oh? Our dinners no longer come with a choice of soup or salad? We have to now pay extra for that? My mom and I ordered small salads and I was quite disappointed with what showed up on my very small plate when it arrived. You want me to pay $5 for THIS? The highlight of the night was our server noticing my son was very interested in the veggies on my plate and she offered to go make him a plate of veggies. He was quite happy to have his favorite things to snack on as we waiting for our dinners.

When our fondue arrived (hubby and i both ordered it), the amount of meat that came for the two of us was kind of rediculous. It was maybe enough to satisfy one of us, but both of us? Seems like every time we come here, we get less and less food for higher prices. The spiced rice was either old or underdone. Hubby said it was crunchy. I'm not a fan of the spiced rice, and the fact I'm on a low carb diet, I didn't have any to verify what he experienced, but he felt disappointed enough about it to say something to one of the staff. We left feeling less than satisfied by our dinner, and by the time we got home, we were making food just to make up for it.

We ordered the pizza for our son off the kid's menu. We were expecting a flat, round-ish piece of food with sauce and cheese and maybe a topping or two. What he got was a piece of french bread, cut in half, brushed with sauce and topped with cheese. This is the kid who eats everything, and he would barely touch this. The sauce was way too "grown up" even for him and he has a pretty sophisticated pallet for a 3 year old. At least it came with a sizable side dish of fresh fruit (apples, strawberry, grapes).

Our water girl was fairly attentive, but I don't think we saw our server again after our food was delivered until it was time to push the dessert menu. The experience was definitely not worth the price we paid. For 2 fondue, side salad, and pizza for the kid, we paid $74 with tax and tip.

Sad to say this place has really gone down hill. We won't be back any time soon, if at all. If I happen to be in the area, maybe I'll pop in to give the bar side a try since quite a few of you reviewers rave about the bar experience, but I won't be making any special trips up to Nevada City for this place. Sad, since this has been my fav restaurant hands down for 25 years. No more...

Every table gets breadstick crackers and ranch dressing as a starter. Dinner for two will cost about 100 dollars.

    Those are two facts.

If eating cheap dried bread crackers with ranch dressing wets your appetite. Then make a stop here, eat the bread and find another place to eat.

In case you missed the sarcasm, my date and myself laughed out loud when they set the free "appetizer" on our table. The last time I had breadsticks with ranch dip was at my high school cafeteria. The fondue that followed was an improvement on high school food, but for a final bill passing 100 I was expecting some creativity.

The service was adequate, though ruffly half our order was forgotten, thankfully when we asked if we could maybe have a few veggies on the side the water girl looked around and mentioned that a full plate of vegetables was supposed to have come with the order. I hadn't realized,  and had the craving for something other than meet not come along we would have paid full price for half a meal and not even known it.
Anyway, the waitress was pleasant, and mistakes happen, no worries.

The high point of the night, the continued laughter about the cheap breadsticks and ranch starter. How can they think that's a good idea?

Next time I'll save my money and just just eat pickled eggs at coopers..wait they don't have picked eggs at coopers?!

    Or do they...

One of Nevada City's best restaurants. And they have live music what seems like every night. We always sit in the bar/lounge. All the bartenders are super cool and the service is outstanding. The decor is fun... cozy but also has a big tree in the middle so you feel like you're in a "forest."

For food, pretty much everything is good. For appetizers, I recommend the cheese plate, crab cakes, shrimp cocktail, and mussels. For entrees everything is really good... We've had the steak salad, bar salmon, filet, fondue... you can't go wrong with anything.

They have a great by-the-glass wine list and a full bar.

You have to go to Tuck's when in Nevada City!

I've only been once, but the expensive fondu was horrible.  Great wine though.  I'll make it back one day to give them a fair chance and eat the real food, but i'm not anxious to return.

The resturant is beautiful, and they have some really great local artists play music sometimes.  I usually hear rave reviews.   Maybe I'll even be writing one if I ever make it back.

A friend and I went there last night after the dinner rush. Walking in, we were greeted - then ignored. After a few minutes, a gentleman came and seated us (I'm guessing the manager? Maybe owner?). We again waited for our server to take our drink order. This would set the tone of the evening. The service was TERRIBLE. Our waitress made it obvious that she didn't want to be bothered. When we placed our food order, she huffed off to SIT AT A TABLE ACROSS THE WAY. We thought "is this a joke?" She was extremely unattentive, and when we finished with our meal, she tossed the dessert menu on the table, rolling her eyes and plopping down at the other table. I definitely will not be back.

On a positive note, the fondue appetizer was decent.

Wow great Cioppino and good Calamari. The Cioppino was as good as what I am used to getting in San Francisco. The crab was not on the same planet but the flavor and seasoning were spot on. Generous portions as well.
Our friend had an eight bone serving of lamb chops that looked delicious.
I've eating here many times in my life and it never really struck me as good place to eat. I am really glad things do change for the better. Yum

Good atmosphere, excellent service.  Lovely music in the background, very good cocktails. Not so great food and high prices. The fish of the day I ordered came out nearly raw. They were quick to recook and bring me out a new one, but it just lacked flavor and texture.  The veggies on the side were good, but soaked in butter.  My husbands steak was nothing great.
Don't think we'll go back, there are too many other restaurants in town to try!

I've been coming here since before the fire. It is still a restaurant of mediocrity that doesn't know what it wants to be.

The menu, with names like "Sherwood Forest," is in step with the Friar Tuck theme . . . or is it? A Sherwood Forest is a New York Steak! Why not venison or wild boar and charge a few bucks more for something truly special?? And with the Robin Hood thing going for it, why serve Hawaiian? Irony aside, I am completely aware of the reason for trying to please customers with diverse tastes at a reasonable price. But the end result here is a restaurant that doesn't specialize in anything and doesn't do anything especially well. They try to be a Fondue restaurant, but the fondues are meh. They offer Japanese/Hawaiian dishes, but their teriyaki is meh.

Their beef is USDA Midwestern feedlot bovine blah blah blah . . . nothing special. I would love to see and would spend more money for a California free range grass fed beef steak, dry aged, lightly seasoned and seared in an oven at 1400 degrees and then grilled or broiled to perfection. If they served that level of quality they wouldn't have to wrap their flavorless fillets in bacon and smother them in a sweet syrup like TGI Friday does.
I would also love to see some wild game on the menu provided they know how to prepare it well and don't over smother it in salt or an ultra-sugary alcohol syrup they would call a sauce.

The service is adequate, but rushed. I can never seem to relax there.

Even the ambiance doesn't know what it wants to be. The front room is too bright, nondescript, divided and cold, and the back room is too dark with a big fake Disneyland-like tree to make it seem like you're dining in a forest, but one fake tree does not make a forest.

They get a star for a bar with musicians playing acoustic guitars at low volume.

If this review seems a bit harsh, it is because I am becoming more and more disenchanted with every visit to Friar Tucks. Nevada City is ready for a truly fine restaurant, and this one is the best suited to provide that . . . if it seriously reconsidered the menu . . . and acquired a truly talented and creative chef . . .

If you are looking for a fun night out Friar Tucks is the place to go!
The prices are resonable for such great food, but be warned it might be a little expensive.
The service is great and the music is amazing, with live bands playing in the bar right in the bar.
This is a great place for buisness and birthday parties as well, in my opinion this is one of the best resturants in Nevada City.

P.S. Little secret try the Baked Motzarella! Amazing.

Went here a while back with my girlfriend. Had the steak and it was really good. The waiters were exceptional and refills were given almost right when I finished my drink.

Interior is nice and is split into two different parts. On some nights they have live entertainment.

Dessert was really good as we ordered it to go to eat later in the night.

    Love Friar Tucks!
We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here and they were great with all 50 or so of our guests.  We got that awesome tree room for our party which was the coolest.  Everything went smoothly without a hitch, and the staff was outstanding!

We went the full fondue route and it was awesome.

Beef, chicken were great. Followed with desert...all great.

Warning: Our oil got very hot and almost splattered all over us.

The main area is built around a tree and provides great atmosphere.

Friar Tuck's boasts a great down town Nevada City location, it is clean, and it has live music in the way of a singer/guitarist every night of the week.  The wine list varies and is posted on the wall in the bar.  I usually find a satisfactory wine on the list and I enjoy the music.

The food is adequate.  That is all.  After a couple of restaurant experiences, I won't do it again.  It's just not good value.

The bar food is OK bar food, nothing to write home about, but not bad either.

The bar service is hit and miss, varying from alright to shockingly bad.  Heaven help you if the staff is in a foul humor... or they haven't had their Kamikazes, yet.  For best results... go directly to the bar and make aggressive eye contact with your chosen wait person.  I heartily recommend clients pay as they go.

When I go here, it is only to meet up with acquaintances and to hear the music.   The local musicians are really wonderful.

The best features of this restaurant are the decor and the downtown location.  Because its original building burned to the ground in 2002, Friar Tuck's is the only restaurant in town that occupies a 21st century building.  Consequently, the air conditioning works great, everywhere in the restaurant, no small benefit during summer.

It is also convenient if you are on felony probation, because the county probation department's offices are upstairs from the restaurant, accessible via an elevator lobby  that many people mistake for the entrance to Friar Tuck's.

By now you are asking why I do not discuss the experience of eating a meal here.  It is because I regret to say that I don't like or recommend this place.  It is expensive, and the food is nothing special.

There is one remarkable feature about the food that I should mention:  they sneak cheese into almost everything.  I ate here about 4 years ago, ignorant of their cheese worship.  I gobbled down salad with cheese on top, breadsticks with cheese dip, potatoes with cheese, and steak with cheese sprinkled on top.  [Query:  Does a mouse run the kitchen, a la the movie Ratatouille?]  For three days after that meal, I felt as though a bowling ball was resting on my stomach.

Tonight's meal brought back those bowling ball memories, altho I carefully avoided the breadstick cheese dip and the cheese hidden on the salad.  I ordered prime rib and specified "not bloody."  I offered to take an end cut if it would mean that the roast was adequately cooked.  I got the end cut, which was bloody.  I fear the other end of the roast was still alive.

I think management is working on training the serving staff, because they were all attentive and aggressively pleasant, in a "Be nice to the customers or you will be fired on the spot" kind of way.

    Great place.

I went there for dinner before my Senior Ball and got fondue oil on my prom dress.  I should have known then that I'd have a shitty time with the ass I went with.  Oh well...the food is great.

I went there again over a decade later and it was just as good as I remembered.

Yum-my! Whenever we're in town visiting family we try to take the time to eat here. They have a special fondue platter called the "Bubble and Squeak" which is champagne and all kinds of seafood and meats with dipping sauces plus a dessert fondue too. It's great with friends or even split with just two.

It's a pretty romantic atmosphere, great for special occasions but I wouldn't bring small children here. There's also a pretty lively bar scene (by Nevada City's standards anyway). This is a white bread yuppie town afterall.... ;)
