We have been to gators twice now in two weeks. Â No, it's not fine dining but it is very, very good American food. I can give five stars because it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Service is excellent, drinks are great, prices are great and portions are incredible.
Tonight I had a land and sea special. It was on the menu as an 8 ounce filet topped with lobster and bernaise. In reality it was closer to ten ounces with the meat from 6 (yes I counted) lobster claws as well as some pieces of tail. That came with salad, loaded mashed taters and corn for $21.99
My filet was a perfect medium and the lobster was excellent. It can get chewy if not treated right in a sauce. Oh, almost forgot the free all you can eat popcorn and bread. The bread had station is cut your own with regular and flavored butters. We had the the same server both times. Attentive without being annoying and very pleasant. She was one of the best we can ever remember having.
The decor is outback meets sports pub in a time machine. One table has 2 sleds, a picture of fenway, a Packard thermometer and a sombrero. Â Decor means absolutely nothing to us but it is important to some.
If you are expecting something from iron chef, go elsewhere. Â If you want good food and drinks while not paying for pretentious atmosphere go to gators. Try it, you know you want to.
Decent food and I've found myself there late plenty of times to eat I think they serve till 11 which I like. People complain about the locals but if you can't handle bar people go sit in the dining room. I never have a problem. Good food, cold beer. Can't go wrong, plus plenty else going on with the volleyball and stuff. It's really pretty good for such a small town
Review Source:Maybe because I live in Providence, Gator's isn't really my scene. As has been mentioned before, it's more of a local watering hole. But Gator's has a lot of things going for it that make it hard for me to dismiss entirely.
The volleyball during the summer is a lot of fun to watch/partake in; plus, the outdoor seating has been nicely redone. There's a couple of pool tables in the rear, as well as a pinball machine up front.
All of the drinks are stupid cheap, and fairly decent. At last visit, I got a 23oz Guinness for $6... Which is typical for a pint most places in the city. On Sundays, they have a special on wings ($.50, but they're double wings, so it's essentially $.25) - the Buffalo style are decent. I wasn't a huge fan of the Parmesan-Garlic wings. The rest of the food is ok, but pretty good for a bar.
The service was good enough - not overly sunny, but by no means rude.
I lived up the road from Gator's for years and my parents still do so I have been coming here forever. They have good selection of appetizers, sandwiches, dinners, and specials.
The food has always been good and the service has never been an issue. If it was the owner is very attentive to customer satisfaction and will always try resolve any issues. They have free soup at lunch during the week and a bread bar at night. They also have a great variety of beer for a good price. On Wednesday nights they have an All You Can Eat Pasta Bar with a variety of toppings and sauces. You can even just make a plate to take home!
Parking at time can be an issue especially during volleyball season but even if the parking lot is full there never seems to be a wait for dinner. At Gator's you can get away with a good meal and drinks for a decent price. Stop by if you are in the area or try a pizza from their sister business Lumberjacks (located in the same building).
Got lost in the area a few years ago and wandered into Gator's Pub to call my cousin (this was before cell phone service in the area) to help me find my way home. Years later, I still can't get him out of this place. In fact, I think he works behind the baah!
Wicked good drinks! Ask Q to mix you something special!
Definitely a locals bar... but seeing as I grew up a mile away that really isnt a complaint. I can see why out of towners hate walking into a locals bar because they feel they dont get the same treatment but in the defense of the wait staff and bartenders they build a relationship with people who go in there week after week and know that they are still going to be there next week where you might not be. I know that isnt a great way to run a business but sometimes thats how things are.
That doesnt just happen here but at a lot of places, I have experienced both sides of it.
As for the food/drinks. I am not a big drinker but I really like the "fish bowl" because its tasty and they throw some swedish fish at the bottom for you. That way when you are liquored up you look silly trying to stab your swedish fish with your straw and try to slowly bring it up the sides just for it to fall back to the bottom. Very sad. I sometimes find the food to be a bit salty but that just might be me. The wings are always good and I also enjoy the nachos. Very basic bar/pub food. As for meals, I like the burgers and clubs.
The first thing to remember about Gator's is that it's generally a locals pub. There are regulars there all the time and they come in droves. Luckily, the atmosphere tends not to suffer for it and the food is stellar.
The food is excellent. Portions especially for appetizers are very large; I come home with leftovers most of the time. I highly recommend the nachos, soups, and anything buffalo flavored. Beware of the nuclear sauce though; this veteran buffalo aficionado can't even hack it (yet). I prefer hot but there's a very tasty mild option as well. The black diamond steak is among my favorites in the area. It's unexpected that this would come from a pub at a reasonable price but there it is.
The bread bar and popcorn are complementary, always fresh, and tasty.
The bar is a bit cramped especially on volleyball or big sports game nights. Drinks are worth the short wait both for price and quality. Most on the bartending staff have been working there for more than a few years.
Dining room seating is small but not terribly cramped. The pool room is more for pool and drinks than pool and dinner as the tables are small and few. The patio is a great place to eat or drink if your party intends on having just one tab. At last check, they will not split checks outside. Inside, I seem to remember that they will, however.
With a little more space inside, out, and for parking as well as getting rid of the annoying check-splitting rule outside, Gators would be a 5 star pub for me.
Great place to hang out and relax. Â Yes, there are a lot of locals there, but Ive never had waitstaff/bartenders be anything less than friendly and accomodating! Â The drinks are always good (the Sandy Beach is a personal favorite), and my friends who like beer and wine are always happy, too. Â The food has been consistently good on my visits, plus there's a bar where you can cut your own fresh bread! Â Bonus for tonight: Â every single TV was on the Stanley Cup Finals... even if the B's lost. Â :-)
Review Source:I've been going to this place for about four years. It's really the only casual place around for miles and they tend to have a decent beer selection on tap.
The problem is the people. The locals are, as others have mentioned, not very friendly. It's not a dive, though. I am not a fan of the local football team as i'm originally from another state. During a play-off game, I cheered when my team scored a touchdown and a guy across the bar threw a coaster at me! He wasn't dangerous, but are you kidding me with that? It gives you some insight into the mindset of most of the locals: outsiders not welcome. Â There are exceptions, of course, and a-holes are everywhere.
But here's what's worse, though: the bartenders barely give my husband and I the time of day even though we're big tippers and we've been there countless times for years! They are very attentive to the locals, although I don't know what their system of classification is for that honor.
If you want some pub grub and a really big draft beer- go. If you're looking for warmth or some fun on a weekend, go elsewhere.
Only gave it 3 stars as it tends to be a local bar. Food is good, beer is cheap. It is a locals hang out for North Smithfield and Burriville area people. Two pool table in the back hall with a separate juke box. Bar is pretty good size, seating can get limited though during busy times.
They have a very large volleyball court that is really nice. They pride themselves on there summer volleyball league. It is a nice set up. Plenty of parking.
We stopped here one night on our way home from dinner in Providence to have a few drinks. Â It was OK. The bar is really small, and it seemed like everyone there is a 'regular'. Usually I don't mind this type of atmosphere, but the people weren't very nice.
They were having karaoke, which I LOVE, but it didn't seem like anyone there was in to it. The best part was when my husband sang 'Barbie Girl'. lolololol..
Their drinks were drinkable, but nothing special. I might try it again, but probably not.
