I love carrot cake, and Gilhooley's is the best carrot cake I've had in Chicago and 'burbs. I am not kidding. (I saw another reviewer say that their carrot cake was frozen but I don't care!)

The rest of the food was fine--I had a chicken sandwich on a surprise pretzel bun (yum!) with fresh fruit (actually, the fruit was really good for some reason) and the service was decent, but the carrot cake is why this place is getting four stars.

I am working around there now, but Gilhooley's doesn't open until 3 p.m., so luckily, since I'm usually done early, I won't be tempted too often to go there for carrot cake.

this place is just pathetic. the only reason why i've given it 2 stars is because the servers are very nice and friendly.  the menu is about the size of a kleenex tissue. and what little food they do have, it's mediocre at best. i ordered a brownie for dessert and they didnt have the ice cream to put ontop. my sister ordered the carrot cake and they literally told her that it was in the freezer and it may not taste so great so they let my sister have it for free. the ravioli has no flavor what so ever. the service is beyond slow. if you plan on eating there next month, i suggest you put your order in now.. seriously, they're THAT slow. i dont think i'll ever visit there again.

this place would be alright if the food wasn't bad. i was hangin with some of my SXU classmates and we ordered nachos and corndogs.. nachos were ok, but the corndogs were served warm on the outside cold on the inside. despite the fact that we could pretty much eat anything at that point of the night, it wasn't very good. stick to the drinks if you ever pay this place a visit

All around terrible... and that's pretty much all i have to say! Lol...
I attend SXU.. Ive only been there twice in 5 years & that was too often. Service is bad & the food is really bad! Students hardly go there & the food is free for them when using their meal plans!

The prices are high because SXU students can use their meal plan money here.

The service is slow and inattentive because SXU students have no other choice besides here and the diner. The food isn't impressive for the same reason.

I was a student at SXU and it always blowed my mind that non-students would come here willingly. No one should have to deal with this place.

This is without a doubt one of my favorite bars on the south side. I enjoy it for a number of reasons. The atmosphere is great because its not overcrowded and you don't have to yell when your hanging out with friends. I also love their beer selection and they have great daily specials as well. they always have the seasonal Sam Adams and goose island beers as well as good old standbys. also they are one of the few bars in the area to car goose island green line. one of my personal fav's. now for the food. they have a great menu that far surpasses typical bar food.I love the firecracker shrimp as well as the pig skins ( potato skins filled with pulled pork). i think if you're looking for a great night out then i truly hope you try out Gilhooleys.

My food came 8 minutes after everyone at my table recieved their food.  I had a salad.  I was sitting there with my water while everyone was halfway done with their meals.  The ranch dressing is probably the worst dressing I have ever had.  I don't know if they make it in house or buy it off a shelf.  The ranch is NOT good at Gilhooley's.  The salad was good, waitress was nice and the overall place was clean and tidy.

I've been here twice since my friend goes to St. Xavier and brought me here both times. The service is not even respectable, since they had about 3 waiters on a Saturday night and I even overheard a table next to us say they were there for 30 minutes with no service whatsoever. Their menu is quite odd, with appetizers more like entrees and they always seem to be out of something (my friend mentioned to me that they were out of lemons one day- at a bar!). However, the food is actually quite good once you get it. I'd recommend the mac and cheese- very tasty!

Gilhooley's has the potential to be a gathering spot with it's large outdoor patio and "pub in a box" interior, but no one seems to be gathering here.

We were here on a Saturday night and there were only a smattering of people in the place.  Pretty quiet for a weekend.  I laughed that they actually carded us - although I guess this could be considered a "college bar" given the proximity to St. Xavier University but there was not a student in sight.

There is a pool table in the "den" and darts in the back but no one was playing either when we were there.  And the whole "vibe" of the place lacked a friendliness that I expect when I go to grab a beer at a neighborhood place.  Even the bartender acted like he didn't want to be there and was just going through the motions.

We sat at the bar had a beer (cheap) and waited to see if it was going to pick up.

    It didn't, so we left.

I was there for a private party on Saturday evening. Bar was rather empty- poor sign ! In addition- no music ! Further the party room is workable but the DEN has a pool table with broken cue sticks? . The buffet was not plentiful or tasty and the bar set-up .... A JOKE! A hike to get there- I will not be back !

I like it but I wanna LOVE it!  I think this place has a lot of potential because of a pretty cool set-up.  There is a bar in the middle with a crowd on both sides...but one side is elevated above the other.  There are darts to play when there isn't a band and the food isn't bad either.  My problem is the lack of energy on most nights.  Why don't more people go here??  There is a University right across the street and not another decent bar close by so I don't get it.  Ah well, check it out if you get a chance.

I've been doing my internship at a high school nearby, so ended up eating and drinking here a few times.  Food isn't exciting, but not terrible either.  I didn't think it was too expensive, but maybe for the burbs.  Liked the pubby atmosphere - laid back, smelled like college.  Ah memories...

As a college bar, this is pretty upscale. I mean, it's no dive bar; you can converse without worrying about shouting.
The downsides of this bar is that it does last call pretty early and can be pretty pricey. Does it stand apart from other bars in the area? Not so much. It seems like this is the little brother to Bourbon Street.

Nice bar that was recently given to nearby St. Xavier University.  My only complaint is that they shut down way to early, if I'm not mistaken I think last call is around 12:30.
