Stopped in the "G-man" for our first afternoon location on our bachelor party bar tour. Â It wasn't crowded, just another group of about 30 students on a bar tour. Â Pitchers of Coors Light were $5 so we ordered 13 pitchers for the group. Â Came quickly as did the food we ordered. Â The staff was fantastic and were happy to accommodate us. Â They put up with our crazy shenanigans after we explained we were there for a bachelor party and didn't give us a hard time about getting a little rowdy. Â A few of us ordered food which was delivered quickly and hot, but it wasn't the best. Â Typical college bar food. Â The bar was clean as were the bathrooms, although they were small. Â Would definitely stop in again.
Review Source:The Gman is pretty much the most legendary bar at penn state. Walk in Any Tuesday, Friday or Saturday and you'll find this place bumpin. The Gman is also the spot on Saturdays for game day if you dont have football tickets.
Make sure to try their mind eraser or Long Island ice tea pitcher, for food pizza and wings are always a good call. The service here is top notch, be sure to ask for Dutch if youre grabbing a table or jenny if you're getting served at the bar.
This is a tale of two bars. That are actually one bar. But that one bar has no flippin' clue what it is...
Wednesday evening. I stroll into G-MAN and my jaw drops. The place is deserted at 9:45PM. Usually not a big surprise, but when they're serving Leiney pints for 1.50, I expected to fight off hoards of people. I do not want to mention the karaoke, sigh. Just sad. Good beer = good tap lines, but beyond my taste buds, nothing else was jumping up and down.
Saturday evening. Line AROUND THE BLOCK. 3 dollars just to get through the door. Masses of people crowding in for shots and beers. Whoa. Its loud. No chairs. No service. No floor. All I can see are bobbing heads.
Both of these experiences might sound OK to you, I appreciate that. But for me, the G-MAN is a sad place lacking character. Sad, sad, sad.
so i was djn an event for my sister on a friday so a friend of mine and i decided to roll into penn state thurs-sat and go bar hopping. my sister recommended me to check out this place and wow it was soooooo much fun. had a great time! they had some awsome drink specials which at the time i thought were great but i cant remember them now, lol... def would recommend everyone to check out this bar. only thing i didnt like was the next day(friday) i met my sister and few of her friends here for lunch and we couldnt have any alcohol on the table because they were under 21. i thought that was wack since they are in a big college town but i guess it prevents underage drinking? Â def will b back to check this place out every time i go back to penn state
Review Source:Above average bar food and decent drink prices are the strength of the G-man in State College. Â I was here for lunch on a football Saturday and seated at the bar. Â The service was OK depending on which bartender was serving us. Â I am a fan of their wedge sandwichs which are a cross between a sub and a stromboli. Â When in town I wouldn't hesitate to grab a drink or bite to eat here.
Review Source:It's your typical sports bar. Â A decent menu filled with a variety of options. Â You will almost assuredly find something that you like every time you eat here. Â
I've been there to watch some games, and it can become a pretty good atmosphere. Â They filled to capacity during the Alabama game. Â But other times I've been there, its been completely empty. Â So it really just depends on when you go.
A lot of people like going on Tuesday nights. Â Also, Team Trivia every Wednesday is usually a big hit.
Great Bar for College students. Â A very large menu with many options ranging from burgers, wings and pizza, to salad, entrees, and desserts. Â Many drink options with some good specials. Â Ive eaten there for dinner 3 times and there are rarely people there which is weird to me. Â Big, spacious place, but i've seen it packed during big sporting events as it is a sports bar. Â Good atmosphere. Â Service is pretty slow, though... even when it is empty. Not a bad spot though!
Review Source:Perhaps this place only deserves one star, but I feel a bit apprehensive of casting that judgement...
I went to the Gingerbread Man twice. The first time was for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. It was alright. The food was okay. The service was passable. There just wasn't anything that stood out, and I saw no reason to ever come back again.
Nonetheless, I did return two years later on a Wednesday(?) night. It was trivia night, and that sounded sort of fun. My friends and I apparently arrived too late to partake in the trivia, but that was alright. We just thought we'd listen and hang out for a bit. The drink specials weren't very special at all--cheap crappy beer for an alright price. The service was horrible though, and the atmosphere wasn't very enjoyable. In between trivia questions, the MC blasted random music way too loud for any of my friends to be able to hear each other. I don't know how this place stays in business. I would recommend walking across the street to The Deli any time of day.
Honestly, a bar that has specials that include $5 pitchers of Jack and Coke? And $1 Bacardi/bac-flavors drink specials? Holy college town haven, batman!
Wednesdays seem to have both trivia and karoake which I assume get preeeeetty interesting.
Drinks are strong, food is cheap (and served in mammoth portions) and weeknights aren't too Frat-tastic. Â If that's what you're looking for, G-man is your spot M-Th. Â If you'd rather pop your collar and travel in packs of white-hat wearing bros, come in on a weekend.
The "original" Bill Pickles, so to speak. Public lunch/dinner catering to cheap students and families, changes into a packed bar at night.
Unlike Pickles, lunch at G-Man is actually legitimate. Okay prices, used to get spinach artichoke dip and one of their cheap cheese pizzas. Typically walked out only paying 8 a person for 2 people with leftovers to bring home.
The bar on the other hand is swamped with standard frat types during prime drinking hours with specials and happies that I can only assume were chosen by a schizophrenic. I mean, what the hell does "MOST" mean during happy hour? If they are insinuating that I actually ask a bartender what that means during a packed to death happy hour and understand them, they must be nuts. Regardless, specials are an overall meh. On the other hand, they do have team trivia twice a week. I'd say give it a look at least.
G-Man trivia wednesdays were the best part of my week in SC. It was always the beginning of my weekend. Drink specials were always good, as well as the waitresses. Always had very strong drinks made! Food was generally good, typical bar food. Sandwiches and wedges were the only things I've had, but all were up to par. If you're going on the weekends or during the week, it can be very Greek/Fratastic. Get there early for a table on Wed. trivia night!
Review Source:I must admit, I'm a pretty big fan of G-Man. Sure it's a little fratastic at times, but just get over yourself and you'll have a good time here. Like all of the bars in State College, this place has great drink specials and the food is your typical bar fare, but decent nonetheless. I think that the Penn State bars are the only places where it's socially acceptable to order a pitcher of beer for yourself and drink straight from it without looking like a complete degenerate. What I like best about this place is that there always seems to be seating (at least there has been every time I have been here) and if you're lucky, you can sit in the patio area during the warmer months. Don't expect any kind of micro-brew or anything like that; this is solely a place for your standard domestic light beers. Like I said, a good place for a night out, not for everyone and not a lot of common middle ground in the realm of public opinion.
Review Source:Wing night is on Sunday. Wings are half priced. Best Wings in town.
But since they're only open on home football game weekends, Sunday 11 to 4, they're wing night is during the day. Even the employees were puzzled by this. They need a week night wing night - say maybe Thursday?
Wing are regularly 70 cents each - and with the daily drink specials makes it cheaper than eating at Champs, Damons or nearly anywhere else in town.
better than average, 4 out of five stars for the wings, one of my top three wing places in town, enjoyed the drink specials.
Parking is located close and across the street making it more convenient than most other stops in downtown.
update - don't go there on Monday, you'll be the only one there, they are closed.
Depending on what time of day you visit the G-Man, your perception of the restaurant will be totally different. From lunch through dinner, the restaurant is pretty quiet. The food is good for the price you pay, but the restaurant stays slow on most days since the main crowd are the bar-goers. Kids eat free on Sundays and there is plenty of room for large parties.
After 9pm, the restaurant is either packed to capacity or dead-quiet. I'm constantly amazed at the lack-of middle ground between the two scenarios. The crowd is usually loud and drunk, but that could be because of the great drink specials (most drinks range from $1-3 during happy hour).
Any complaints you read about slow service is due to the sheer volume of people in this place at times and you can't fault the servers for having to fight their way to get to your table each time. Give your server a break and be patient. During the day, the servers are friendly. At night, they shift gears and become purely efficient. Check the place out and even if it's slow, grab a bite to eat.
There's a live band during the school year on Tuesdays, and a DJ with music videos on Friday and Saturday. Also, Team Trivia packs the place on Wednesday nights. Lastly, the G-Man went smoke-free as of August 2008.
Not a bad spot to start the night. The crowd at Gingerbread Man (G-Man) is boisterous (like most Penn State bars), music is good, and on busy nights, the entire place can get packed tight, including the dance floor. Last I checked, the dance floor was a rather small, slightly elevated, area in the corner. Service is friendly and fast, just like their bartenders! I've only ever been here for drinks late night. By the time anyone gets hungry we've moved on to another bar or end up at The Diner.
I'm pretty sure that this place is a chain, but don't take my word for it. There's one in Carlisle and I heard there's also a location in Lewisburg (Bucknell).
