Never again! AWFUL service. We waited a half hour after placing our order for any response. The place was empty. We had to track down our waitress, who was busy yapping in the corner. We ended up leaving without dinner... NICE anniversary ...Thanks for crap service...

In an area not exactly rife with excellent dining, Gladstone Taven is a very solid option. The service is consistently friendly and efficient, and the food is moderately inventive and very tasty. My most recent meal there was on Easter, and I was very excited that they had the full menu plus specials rather than a truncated holiday version. The lamb entree was juicy and flavorful, as was the carrot-based cocktail. The crab tots are forgettable, though they carry the "signature" moniker...opt for a different appetizer.

Had dinner here with a friend, and was quite impressed. The owners did a masterful job with the make-over here, from the previous Chatfield's. The bar area is cozy & hip, while the dining room is beautifully done & upscale but also comfortable for families and kids. This place strikes just the right balance between upscale food and casual but hip atmosphere. Food was delicious. I highly recommend the lentil soup and the pork tenderloin. The latter was tender, perfectly cooked and flavorful. While the GT is not inexpensive, at least they give you some nice accompaniments with your entree (unlike some of their competition at this price point). They also offer some very nice wines by the glass and delicious margaritas. They get busy on weekend, so reservations are advised, but this is a great place for a date or a family meal. Both were in evidence on the night I went, and all seemed to be having a good time. Service is a little on the slow side, but sometimes it's nice not to be rushed through your meal.
Oh, I should mention that if you are a fan of exotic cars, this is a great place to spot a few Bentleys, Porsches, S-edition Audis, etc.

Food is very good and consistent. Service in bar depends upon servers. Most nights are packed and great. Would NOT recommend  nights when Jasmine is in charge unless you like looking at her back, being ignored and waiting 15-20 minutes to get her attention. Not a great experience when dinner and drinks easily run $100+. Management is oblivious to the problem.

Okay, they got me at a weak moment with a lobster croissant (basically a very good lobster roll) with fries for a lunch special. Service was great too.

Bottom line -- a great place to make another run to in the future.

I've been to the Gladstone Tavern many times over the years, and I've never had a really bad experience, but it could be so much better. The menu is nicely diversified, with something for every taste. The quality of the food is very good for the most part. However, on a recent visit, my boyfriend ordered a shrimp entree and he had to search for the three (yes, three) small shrimp! For well over $20, this is inexcusable. When it was brought to the server's attention, he said that's how the entree is! The bill can easily add up if you're a wine drinker.....their wines by the glass are ridiculously expensive, and they're very stingy with the pour. There are many very nice people working there, but sometimes the service can be lackluster at best. One of my pet peeves in a restaurant is being seated then ignored. This has happened here with me on many occasions. The restaurant is very kid-friendly; this could be good or bad depending on your situation! The burgers are very good, and their fries are the best around. But whenever I've had an appetizer and entree there, I always feel a little over-charged when I get the check. I used to come to this restaurant at least once a week, and I was considered a regular. Not once in all the years I've been coming here have I ever gotten anything on the house. That's just bad business. A complimentary drink or dessert every once in awhile is not going to break the bank for crying out loud!! If you're in this area and you're looking for this type of restaurant, try Delicious Heights in Bedminster instead; it's a much better restaurant.

Looks nice, but the food is terrible and the service is even worse. Avoid at all cost.

If you are in the mood for poor service and overpriced food then you have found your utopia. I guess what did it for me is seeing the male manager slap one of the female waitresses on the backside with a checkfold.  He thought he was pretty cool as I watched his demeanor during my extra long poorly staffed lunch.  I suppose if you live in Gladstone you don't have much of a choice and probbably think this place is the greatest thing in the world but I wouldn't drive over 2 miles to eat here...seriously folks there are a lot better restaurants nearby with more attentive wait staffs, better food and managers who belong there and not at a fast food place.

Another restaurant I've been wanting to check out for a while now.  My husband and I had reservations and got seated right away.  We waited for quite some time before someone actually came to wait on us.  The service left much to be desired as some of the other reviews stated.  Our waiter was not much help when we asked him questions about the menu.  We like waiters that say things like...'well i've not tried the tilapia but I can tell you that the strip is amazing and I've sold a bunch tonight'  stuff like that to help us when making a decision.  This guy would say things like...well, it depends on your mood.  ANYWAY, we finally made our entree choices and were so disappointed with the LONG wait for the food to arrive.  The food however was excellent!  My husband loved the strip he got and I loved the lobster cobb salad.   The dessert we ordered (banana split) was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!  the banana was sliced in half longways and lightly battered and fried.  This was probably the best dessert I've ever had in my life!   So overall we left happy but we felt the service needed much improvment!  We will def go back though!

The Good:  We have been here about 10 times and the food has been consistently delicious each time.  The homemade guacamole is really tasty and a great starter.  Nice menu selection, everything from burgers to full entrees.  We have yet to pick something that we did not enjoy.  Diverse beer and wine selection to go with any meal.  Because we have enjoyed quite a few meals here without incident, I am going to chalk the past 2 "so-so" visits up to what seemed like staffing issues.

The Bad: Past few visits have been really disappointing as far as service goes.  Long waits for service and food, even on a Saturday afternoon for lunch.  Hostess sat us and no one came to the table for 20 minutes.  Staff not really too concerned about it and not real apologetic.  One waitress (serving another table next to us) saw us sitting there and never once offered to help us or let management/hostess know that no one had even come to offer us drinks.

The bartender and possibly manager(?) was a little rude on our past visit which was kind of disheartening.

We have brought friends and family here over the past 2 years or so and really started enjoying this place.  We take the 45 minute ride because the food has been worth it.   We are not ready to give up on the Gladstone; but, we hope that reviews like this will cause them to take a look at whatever is happening and make some changes.  This would have been at least a 4 star or even 5 but for the service.

    Better luck next time.......

Three meals over three years.  Each lackluster in their own way.  It's expensive, service is choppy and the bar tending finesse leaves much to be desired. May I suggest a copy of Gaz Regan's Mindful Bartending?

We arrived last night after reading a glowing review in Edible Jersey, unfortunately what is printed on the page in their review and what was experienced certainly felt like two ships passing in the night, one with passengers enjoying their perceived, robust food and the other, our ship, incongruously void of personality and charm.

We were seated in the "living" room area of the restaurant and presented menus by Jose' who introduced himself to us in an apologetic manner.  Harried and obviously stressed out by a table of nine next to the windows, he was covering this room pretty much by himself.  Sure there were back waiters who ferried the food out, but he was essentially alone.  We sat for about 10 minutes without water or even bread( more about this later) and called to a bus-boy to find our waiter.  He took our drink orders.  Bonny Doon Rose' was about 9 dollars per glass (a bottle in the store is about 10, so the prices are unreasonably high for the quality of the wine.  I ordered a Daiquiri cocktail.  Usually a Daiquiri has rum in it.  This one was bitter, sour and had no evidence of rum or liquor of any sort.  I sent it back and ordered a Hennipin Beer- our waiter set it down on the table without pouring it.  Not good form.  At least pour it half way.  We continued to wait to give our order. Another 10 minutes.  Tables around us seemed to be in a similar situation.  Waiting, waiting.  The music seemed to be a melange of Blackploitation movie music (Theme from Shaft, strangely out of place in bucolic, staid-Gladstone) moving into a series of 60's and 70's music.

Finally bread was placed on the table.  As a chef, I believe if you provide good bread when a customer sits down, all can be good.  This hockey puck portion of bread was under-proofed, scattered with bits of salt and raw (cold) in the middle.

Decent olive oil was on the table, butter came in a small ramekin when requested.  (nice touch)
Salads arrived.  Mine was the wedge of Iceberg with "slab" bacon and Maytag Blue-Cheese dressing.  If this dressing was made in fact from Maytag Blue Cheese I failed to taste any of the signature spark and sour of the cheese.  It may have been from a jar with bits of cheese mixed in.  The bacon was cooked into hardened lifelessness and the tomatoes needed more ripening.  Message to kitchen, plum tomatoes work better until the Jersey Tomatoes are ripe.  Spring Salads were fine yet lacked character.  Tables around us that came in after us got served first.

Timing is a major issue with some waiters walking in circles.  A floor manager (tall guy with shaved head) seemed to talk down to people in his charge.  Directing them rather than helping in the day to day work of a restaurant. I don't think I saw him ask any of the people dining if they enjoyed their food?

My dry rubbed brisket was just that.  Dry.  Flavorless.  The plated sauce tasted of bitter coffee.  Do they make their own stocks and sauces?  Doubtful, but for the price charged this should be a scratch house. (everything from scratch).  I looked ruefully at my dish of cold frizzled onions and dry brisket and.. well didn't eat much.
My dinner companions had no major complaints with their entrees, my wife's lamb lacked seasoning (but she likes mostly unseasoned food) and mom-in-law just gets everything cooked into oblivion- this was easy for the kitchen with a heavy hand at overcooking.
Desserts were forgettable.  Coffee was "nothing to write home about" the last thing on your palate is the coffee.  May I suggest Black River Roasting?  I know they would deliver to you because they used to deliver to the (failed) "New" Gladstone Market next door.

Dinner for three almost 200 dollars for pretty bland, basic faire without any memorable dishes.   I'd like to say if you enjoy country club style cooking or camp cooking, you'll be very pleased with the Gladstone Tavern.

the place is bright, modern inside with a nice porch for outside eating.  The lunch was good but very slow (over 25 mins to get our food and we ordered off the lunch menu).

They had good iced tea and the bar looked very nice as a place to meet people and wait for a table or have some bar food.

I had fish and chips which was good.  My friends had a Cobb salad, salmon salad and brisket.  Everyone liked their food.

Three for me means a place i would go back to if i were in the area.

Had dinner there last night for the first time.  I have to say the food was fabulous - we each ordered two appetizers and shared the squash soup which was heavenly.  We both had a salad to start - Fall and Serrano Ham Salad - Serrano Ham Salad was great - I was sad when I was done with it.  Next appetizer was the Crab martini - expensive for an appetizer but well worth it - tons of crab!  Service was not what I would expect when spending this kind of money.  First the bar - not crowded but I waited over 5 minutes before getting service.  Table - waiter was friendly but not too attentive after taking our order.  We were not done with our salads when they brought out the appetizers and soup all at the same time.  Sitting at a table for two didn't leave much room for all the dishes.  They took away our salad plates after a few minutes.  After that - never saw our waiter or the bus boys!  We had to ask our waiter to take away our soup bowls so we had room to finish the appetizers.  Maybe it was just an off night, but i would definitely go back for the food and hope the service is more attentive next time!

The Peapack-Gladstone, Bernardsville, Bedminster area has two options: diner like atmosphere & the food to match, or a recently renovated inn/ tavern place where they charge $20 for a glass of wine and $45 for an entree. The Gladstone Tavern is the exception. Yes, it's still a tavern, yes it's refurbished, however, they have managed to leave the ridiculous prices out and the staff creates an atmosphere of "glad you came".  The food is good, the cocktails are great, the wine list is spot on, the facility is nicely decorated & the restrooms are always spotless (I always resent pricey restaurants with cheap & unkept restrooms, here it's not pricey and the restrooms are very nice). Sit and enjoy your dinner, dessert & drinks as long as you want, you will never be rushed -- they really are glad you came. Leave the Bernards Inn, Pluckemin Tavern & Tewksbury Inn for the days you feel like spending unnessecary cash. If you just want to have a nice meal, with a good glass wine, in a great atmosphere, head to the Gladstone Tavern.

I came here to celebrate my Birthday, as it was close to my Family and a good meeting spot.

I waited for my Family to arrive, and headed over to the bar to have a drink while I waited, and quickly realized, that this place was a little pricey. However the bartender was attentive so I was OK with that.

We were seated and our order was taken. We ordered the GT'S Signature "Crab Tots" and Crispy Fried Squid as appetizers, which were very good. The sauces complimented the food very well, and each had a distinctively different taste which made the meal very appetizing.

Than our main course came out which took which felt like and eternity. 4 out of 5 of us were happy with the food, and actually were very pleased, however the one dish, was very undercooked. When asked to replace the meal, the staff was very quick to try and alleviate the situation and asked what my brother would like instead. The Wait staff was not the most attentive staff in the world, and there were too many on the wait staff which there first language wasn't english.

We had Dessert here, seeing as it was my birthday, which was very good. The meal was good, however for the price, there shouldn't be anything that needs to go back, nor should there be any staff who has trouble understanding questions.

Hit or Miss.  I think if you stick with going there for lunch you would be happier.  The dinners are expensive for what you are getting.  The bar area  is very nice, the music they play is usually pretty good, drinks are good, they have a drink of the day and it's usually decent, which must be difficult.  Again, they don't give their bar away either.  The kids menu looks pretty reasonable and the kids seem to enjoy it.
I think part of the problem with the Gladstone Tavern is not their fault at all.  If there were something between the Tavern and Dominick's price-wise in town, it would be ideal.  When you come home from work and don't feel like cooking or cleaning up and you just want to grab a decent bite that won't sting the wallet, this is not the place.  I figure two adult entrees, a pre-dinner drink and a couple of glasses of wine...you are pushing around $100+ bucks after tip.  That's not super expensive but it's also not something you want to do every week.  And in the summer, a couple times a week and then role in to the weekends with real dinner plans.  There's got to be a happy medium somewhere around here.
Overall...I have had very good meals and very average meals here.  I don't mind spending money on value but there is no guarantee you will find that here.  I would say, give it a try, you may hit instead of miss.  Also, some of the people who work there are very nice, including the owner, which definitely brings me back to try again.

My family and I came here to celebrate my aunt & uncle's 50th Wedding Anniversary, and it was a truly memorable affair.

First, the entire staff was more than accommodating as well as being extremely friendly. Serving a party of 11 at a somewhat upscale restaurant can tend to be a challenge at times, but the staff really stepped up to the plate.

All of the orders came out timely, were correct and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the Atlantic Salmon with garlic spinach and grit cakes, and started off with a dozen oysters on the half shell. The food was fresh and flavorful.

Though it's a bit of a hike from my apartment in Manhattan, hopefully I'll find another opportunity to bring myself back to the Gladstone Tavern.

I had been to the Gladstone Tavern once before and had a beer at the bar.  Nice decor, friendly service.  My wife and I came here for dinner this past Tuesday, and had quite a different experience.  While the service was excellent, the food went from bad to worse.  We started with some stale bread, quickly moving on to greasy Calamari, then finishing with a dry portion of Halibut on top of a rock hard piece of pancetta, all perched on an unidentifiable and tasteless fried object.
    Wine was excellent.

Not impressed.  It's a beautiful building with an outside patio for summer dining.  Service was poor for an upscale establishment.  Our waiter, while seemingly attentive, was forgetful and easily frustrated - dropped the F-bomb several times, not acceptable.   How many times must you have to ask for (fill in the blank)?
Food was marginal, some of us liked our meals, others did not.  I had the Hanger Steak and thought it was bland and not properly cooked.  Pricing was as expected for the area.  I wouldn't recommend it.

Nice, quaint, friendly tavern. Sat at the bar with a friend and just had drinks. She ordered the house red. She had 3 and I had 1 draft beer...$50!!!! Needless to say extremely pricey. Looked at the bar menu and the fried were $9...whoa!  Definitely a nice place but pricey. Bartender was very friendly.

Went here for dinner on saturday - there were 6 of us and we ordered the crab tots (like mini crab cakes, come in a martini glass), and the fried calamari to start. Neither were that impressive. The best was the garlic bread they brought out because they were debuting the san gennaro festival menu. Anyway, so far, we're at 3 stars...the drinks were good - the blueberry spiked lemonade was really tasty and they had dogfish on draft so that was good. for the mains, I got the NY strip cooked medium rare, which i must say was absolutely cooked perfect. Often times you go to even the best steak houses and the cooking is inconsistent. this steak had a perfect pink center all throughout and was really tasty. There was a bit of gristle but what can you do. steak came with potato wedges and string beans - netiher of them impressive. Jen's salmon was just ok, and i could tell she was not impressed. The filet looked good, but filets usually are.

The dark chocolate ice cream was also good. The decor is very nice.

We've had the Gladstone Tavern on our "list" for a very long time of places to try, and I'm glad we finally went!

I agree with some of the other reviewers about the wine list.  While the beer list is pretty great for a nicer restaurant, I would have certainly liked to see more options for wine.

As a self-professed cheese lover, any time a cheese plate is offered, I have to test it out.  We had the Wisconsin Artisan Cheese plate as an appetizer, and it was a great portion.  Not only did it come with three decent sized cuts of cheese, it also had plenty of grapes and apple slices.  Major credit also for supplying enough baguettes to go along with the cheese!

As an entree, I had the hanger steak in a cabernet sauce.  It was pretty good, not cooked specifically to my liking, but a decent steak nonetheless.

The main event of The Gladstone Tavern for me was dessert. I'm usually less than impressed with the dessert selections at restaurants these days.  How many different versions of creme brulee and chocolate molten cake can a girl try?  The variety here was fantastic and there was something for everyone.  I ended up with the Peanut Butter Sandwich, and I was not sorry!

We sat in the dining room, and I was having a hard time figuring out the usual dress code.  We were in work clothes, as were a lot of other guests, but some were in jean shorts or jeans.  I would say for the dining room, err on the side of business casual.

    Looking forward to going back!

First I should mention that Far Hills is a wonderful place and filled with lots to do .. but when my parents moved us out here I thought I would DIE.. literally die!

The Gladstone Tavern is just one of the many great places out here that make it worth the drive.

Right now I am craving their tender juicy fillet glazed with blue cheese and paired with garlic mashed potatoes .. if only you didn't make my cholesterol jump.

The place is modern, clean and great for the neighborhood. I love that the new owners kept the GIANT horse out front (and while it is weird to see a cast iron horse dressed up for Halloween .. it gives the place character)

The service is great, the wine selection while not extensive does boast some great choices, and I absolutely LOVE the steak with blue cheese. So much so that the husband to be and I have ordered it as take out .. and it is NOT a cheap meal. But then again nothing in Gladstone/Far Hills is cheap.

Overall I say leave the kids at home and come enjoy the day in Far Hills; stroll down Main street and end the day at the Tavern. Indulge in the fillet , savor the red wine and then walk over to the exotic car shop around the corner for dessert. I promise it is worth the drive.

FYI .. the Far Hills train station is a half block away (about 60 minutes from NYC by train), by car you can make it here in 45 minutes.

First time at the Gladstone Tavern.  Our family went with another family, for a total of four adults, one teenager (with a sophisticated palate) and three eight year olds.  We were seated upstairs, in a room that had (mostly) large tables.

Service was prompt and efficient despite our being in Siberia.  The server's suggestions were helpful and her descriptions were accurate.  She seemed to know the menu, including the cocktail menu, well.

The food was uniformly good.  It didn't rival the Bernards Inn, but the prices didn't, either.  My skillet chicken was moist and flavorful.  My  wife's rack of lamb was good; she and one of our other companions thought it was too sweet, the rest of us thought it was fine.  My son's duck was on the sweet side, although it was perfectly cooked. Everyone else was very happy with their main courses.

We only had a couple of desserts.  I had a ridiculous chocolate confection with peanut butter cream and marshmallow fluff that made me wish I could bake. Basically, I ate it with my spoon and defended it with my fork.

Good booze, good food, good desserts, good service at a good price point.  I guess it's a good restaurant!

After an extensive renovation to what was an old hangout for locals-Chatftield's, The Gladstone Tavern has the look of a trendy restaurant. The food and service are above average and the bar still attracts a good crowd on weekends.

Its a very nice place.  Sadly it has a bit of a generic feel to it, which is sad because i hear its predecessor had so much personality, but the food is good, the service is fine, and they have a very nice outside seating area.

But its nothing to rave about.  Honestly, I cant' even remember what I ate.

Finally made it here. This used to be Chatfield's and was closed down for a long time... Long enough to forget about the place. Anyway, we stopped in for lunch this weekend and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. It is a very clean and well lit establishment that has a 'cozy' feel to it. Has a nice front porch where you can sit when the weather is in agreement and has a large patio off to the side of the building for nice summer outdoor dining, much like Chatfield's had when it was open. Inside, unlike most restaurants, is very homey,  the walls are covered with black and white pictures of the area from way back in the 1800's and early 1900's. Very cool stuff and really peaked my interest.

We sat at the bar...shocking. The bar is very nice, not too big or not too small...very clean, well lit and surrounded by windows so you know it is day time when you are there.  They have a great beer selection on tap as well, which was a nice surprise. Any place with Dogfish 60 Minute on tap is a win in my book and the fact that they do not offer the 'usual suspects' via draft beer is very enlightening too. Someone there is definitely aware of us beer snobs. ;) They also have a vast selection of top shelf liquors and single malt scotches, which was nice as well.

The lunch menu is great. You can get anything from a garden salad to a filet. I went the burger route as that is my general baseline for a tavern...and as expected, I was pleased. Burgers are nicely sized, cooked just right and dressed well. Their hand cut fries are also a nice touch (although, mine probably could have been cooked a little longer, a non issue). We also had the crab tots (crab fritters) to start, which were delicious, heavier on the crab than breading. I probably could have eaten ten of them if they were there.

A plug to the staff as well....very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend stopping thru this place. You can even take the train here if needed. The Gladstone station is about a block down the street.
