Couldn't resist a picture fake sitting in the gold miner's pan

Back, back into time. Some of these slots are oldschool. The place is really rustic Vegas like. Sweet video-like BlackJack Dealer Game, no real dealer!! didn't mind it there, but it was $5 more to stay in Prim and they have 24/hr food...

As your driving on the 15 N Freeway and you see this hotel, you'll know you Vegas is just a few minutes away. I'm surprised this hotel is still in operation and it was planned to be torn down just like it's neighbor hotel, "Nevada Landing" was and be replaced with a new hip and modern hotel. But then the economy tanked and here it still stands, aging gracefully in the middle of the desert with it's tacky Victorian theme.

This Hotel is a trucker's paradise since it provides the basics for travel like; food, a bed and a shower. The quality of this hotel is on par with Whiskey Pete's on Primm, The Hacienda Hotel near Hoover Dam and The Quad in Vegas but that's on the Las Vegas strip but the quality is just the same.

Inside you'll find a smoke filled casino and the grouchy hotel and casino staff because they hate their jobs working in a dive hotel and casino that is, "Gold Strike Hotel and Gambling Hall". The one thing that makes it old school is the smokey casino that reminds me of Casino Royale and the now closed Bill's Gamblin Hall (Formally Barbary Coast ) on the Vegas Strip and I don't know how long that will last.

What I like about this hotel is the fake mini town and and twinkling lights at night all around the tower and Gold Strike sign definitley remind me of old school Vegas and of course the coins dropping in the slots, very classic!

THIS is old Vegas. This is old-timey, smoke-filled, coin-paying Vegas. Thirty minutes away from it.

Why five stars for this dump? Easy - because the gas comps rack up fast (even on the Craps machine, unlike ALL the big casinos on the strip). I play to my hearts delight to get all my slot-fever out, relish in carrying around buckets of nickles and quarters (sometimes dollars, if I'm lucky) and then play some craps (we're too shy to play on the strip) then head out.

We've spent a night or two here before - the rooms are sketch, but if you need to lay your head down somewhere for the night, this is your spot. When that crazy traffic kicks in, then you'll be grateful for this place. Arcade and snack spot too for your little ones with pretty yummy ice cream - milkshakes.

Again, this place is no Aria, Venetian or Bellagio. It's a relic, it's an old-timer and I hope my future kids get to see this place in it's state - an old icon of what used to be the "glamour" of Vegas.

Fairly big casino, nothing special. Seemed kinda dingy and dated...not unlike many of the patrons. Looked like it got hit by a flood the week before we got there and had large areas roped of with fans...that could have added to the dingy aspect. Why anyone would stay here or even gamble here is beyond me. It's kinda low brow and Las Vegas is less than 30 minutes away.

This review is for the casino only. I did not stay at the hotel since I have a motor vehicle that is currently operational.

Stopped by here on the way to Cali from Las Vegas. Had never been here before, so we stopped by to hit the facilities, grab a couple chips(I collect them), and just check the place out in general.

It was okay. It was like stepping in a time warp to the early to mid 1980's. At least the place seemed clean and the few people I came across were nice and pleasant, especially the cage cashiers.

I would say that I'd check out the hotel one day, but unless my car takes a sh*t right by the place I just don't see that happening. Not that its such a bad place, but more because it is just 3 miles east of BFE!

The bathrooms were cleaned and I got my chips so it served its purpose.

3 stars and the benefit of the doubt

EPIC weekend in Vegas. Super tired and hungover. Time to drive home. Horrible traffic. You know the deal!

Except this time poor boyfriend was too tired to drive. We needed somewhere to go or something to do to wait out this traffic! Everyone passes by Gold Strike on the way to Vegas, but I've never actually known anyone to stop by. We thought we'd give it a try and wow, well... It was entertaining (but not in a good way).

FIRST of all, the decorative outdoor walls with the fake mini town and the fake signs and the fake different buildings are very deceiving. There is no ice cream here!!

Boyfriend wanted to sit down so my friend and I explored the place. The entire casino floor is gross. Old. Dirty. Very old. Not pleasant. Even the air felt old and stale. The buffet was closed, but there was a small snack bar... which looked worse than my local movie theater's concessions stand. The lady working there was extremely rude when my friend and I asked for cups of ice.

My friend and I saw a big sign that said ARCADE and we both got VERY excited. But as soon as I walked downstairs... Are you kidding me? I felt like I went through a massive time warp. Like I walked into Flynn's arcade from the original Tron movie except 1/8 the size and not as cool. Maybe smaller. The air was thick and heavy and the lights were dim. There might have been a couple ghosts in there too.

Gambling here is cheap & penny slots are okay. Again, this whole place feels like a major time warp.

During our my entire exploration with my friend, my boyfriend napped at the chairs in front of the gift shop. After waking up with a little puddle of drool and with the aid of an overpriced energy drink from the gift shop, we were finally ready to head home.

Overall, good place for a nap... and maybe free cups of ice. Nothing much else!

My review is based on the prices paid. The room on a weeknight was $39.95 and the breakfast and lunch buffets were $6.99 including beverage (the beverage is usually extra at many casino buffets). The $6.99 breakfast buffet was good for the price. The Steak House which is open Wednesday through Sunday is a very pleasant place with very low prices - it is probably best to order prime rib or chicken. My chicken marsala dinner was good.

This casino is owned by MGM Resorts and is huge. It was built in the late 1980's for the California drive to Vegas crowd. With the huge expansion of Indian casinos in California, the drive to Vegas market has contracted substantially. Much of the Gold Strike hotel/restaurant areas are closed - the coffee shop and the snack bar are closed.

My room was clean and spacious. The bed was good, lots of channels on the TV (many casinos have just a few channels), lots of free parking including an area for RVs to park. No resort fee that is a hidden charge at many Las Vegas area casinos. The towels and bedding were clean and of decent quality. My room was very quiet. These rooms are priced less than a Motel 6 and the room has a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, and facial tissues which Motel 6 does not have. Sure the place is worn, but for these prices you do not get the MGM Grand.

Jean has a very good small airport with glider and skydiving operations - fun for those so inclined. You can go skydiving or take a glider ride. The airport is about a quarter mile walk on a lighted concrete walkway from the hotel. The terminal building has offices for the skydiving operators. I stayed here because weather precluded flying to my destination. This sure beat flying into Henderson and renting a car or taking a taxi to get to a high priced casino hotel.

We manage to somehow find ourselves stuck in an outrageous amount of traffic leaving Vegas on a Sunday afternoon at 3pm, where the freeway was literally a parking lot. So what better way to remedy this then by killing some time by stopping by a casino? ;) We've always driven by this place but never bother stopping by because... well people usually just stop in Primm before and after Vegas. So it was a no brainer: traffic to die down and gambling.

This place is a bit awkward to find (yes you can see it from the freeway but once you get off, it gets a bit confusing). Plenty of parking spaces, and I mean PLENTY! Once you go in, it's not a big casino from the looks of it. Its decor reminds me of Downtown Vegas' Main Street Casino, but older... not as well maintained.

Onto the gambling! For those who like the old school coin dropping out of the machines, this is the place for you! Grab that bucket and scoop it up~ But don't get too excited now. For the 2 hours that I was there, the machines had the "call attendant" and/or "pay by hand" more than seeing coins fall from it. As for the newer machines, like "Sex and the City" or "$1 Craps", the only form of payout would require you to wait for an actual person to come to your machine to hand you your winnings (where as in other casinos a paper money voucher would print and you take that and cash it in and be on your merry way.)

Players' Reward Club: Forget about it! No promotions AND the line to sign up for the card is the same line as hotel guests who are checking in/out of the casino.

I'm glad I got a chance to stop in this casino since I see it all the time. But I don't think I'll ever be returning here again. Keep on driving folks! You ain't going to find no gold here, I can promise you that!

This place has just really gone downhill just in the past 6 months alone. Yes, I am one of those "dreaded truckers" that some of you rather snobby Yelpers tend to look down your noses at, (If you could only see my W2's), and I have stayed here many times over the years. While I appreciate the accommodating nature of the hotel staff as far as giving us discounts on rooms, the rest of the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. The casino has been virtually gutted and who CLOSES their restaurant ? The only thing available as far as food is one of the worst "buffets" I have ever experienced. Even then, try arriving after midnight and the so called breakfast buffet is extremely poor. Everything from the rooms to the elevators are in serious need of maintenance. MGM/Mirage resorts (the owners) obviously have not, nor will not put ten cents into this place and it shows. This place used to be kind of "old school", but comfortable. You could get that cheap Vegas prime rib at all hours and a decent room after driving all night. Evidently, not any more..Heck, even the Vons drivers don't stay there anymore.

I was tempted to give this one star, but since the bathroom was quite clean and that was the reason for my stop, I gave it the coveted 2 stars.

As soon as I walked in, I was overwhelmed with smoke. It was awful especially with so few people there.

I can't understand how this place can continue to operate. With so many better alternatives south and of course, north, it's a wonder that this dinosaur still exists. But then, where would I stop for a bathroom break after visiting the last spike historical sign along the railroad tracks north of the Gold Strike?

I do not have a check in because Yelp was down for maintenance.

Keep driving! It gets better I promise.

A bathroom break was in order so we took the nearest exit off the hwy and reluctantly entered the Gold Strike. My lover had an upset tummy and headed straight for the men's room. I knew he would be a while so I went to the bar and ordered a Mandarin Orange Vodka w/ soda water. The lady bartender said they didn't carry that flavor of Vodka, or ANY flavored Vodka. That kinda took the wind out of my sails a bit but I sucked it up and ordered a Gin & Soda w/ extra lime. I pulled my card out to pay but was then informed by the bartender that it was a cash only bar. WHAT?!? In Vegas??? My mind was a little blown by that. Luckily my boyfriend emerged a few moments later and we skedaddled back to civilization.

Had a good time but the place is tired and in need of a facelift and remodel. It was built it the early 80s and hasn't seen a coat of paint or upkeep since then! Clearly the place is running for it's life....just trying to survive! I'm sure it will close at some point....kinda sad. The employees are nice people. I would actually stop in again and stay a nite or two. It's got kind of a quircky vibe to it. The buffet was slightly above average and the room not bad. My only complaint really is the "cigarette smoke"....the place just reaks of cigarette smoke. In this day and age it's shocking that any establishment supports smoking. But I guess that's the demographic they are targeting (uneducated smokers and drinkers). The place is located 35 minutes from Vegas out in the middle of nowhere and its very quiet and away from the crowds. There is NOTHING in Jean, NV......and I mean NOTHING. There is (1) Shell gas station, (1) post office, (1) highway patrol small office, (1) injection molding company that molds containers and (1) small building called the "Justice Court" (obviously for speeders to pay their fines)....there is a womens prison on the hill above Jean...but that has long since been closed down.....the Goldstrike is the only real draw to Jean.....everything else has been closed and torn down.

The place is owned by "MGM Resorts" and I always wonder why they don't put some money in this place? It needs to be fixed up and not let to fall apart.

I give the place three stars because it's eclectic and my stay was ok.

I'd stay again.

This place is cool if you just want to gamble outside of Vegas and get a decent payout (if your are lucky of course). They have inexpensive blackjack tables and decent slots. The hotel is old and could use a fresh coat of paint.

Whatever you do, puuhlease do not eat the lunch buffet. It is Disgusting (with a capital D). They had some sort of steak that after a chew or two, made you wonder what you were REALLY eating. The desserts were horrible (old and stale), and most of the food looked inedible. I loaded up on salad and left quite disappointed, however it was $6.99, so I did not complain.

We stopped here for breakfast after making an early getaway from Las Vegas. This review is solely for the breakfast buffet and general condition of the place. It's a dump. We should have turned back when we saw the filthy door handles and glass doors at the entrance. The casino is dingy and overall decor probably didn't even look good in the ''70s.

The $9.95 breakfast buffet was pitiful. A poor choice of dishes. No yogurt. No milk for the cereal. Scrambled eggs that looked and tasted like the powdered variety. Foul coffee. Dirty cutlery. We left most of our food and beat a hasty retreat.

I made the mistake of using the restroom. The towel dispensers didn't work. The hypodermic needle disposal box said a lot about the regular clientele.

It deserves zero stars, but gets one star because the egg counter chef was cheerful and churning out good looking plates. The ancient lady who brought our coffee was the only other good thing about this place. Somebody else commented on the nursing home kind of smell that pervades the place. They're right.

If you're headed out of Vegas early I recommend that eat before you leave town or at Primm. I doubt that Kitchen Nightmares or Restaurant Impossible could sort the place out. This place needs to be demolished.

Stayed here one night! And that's only because we tried to book on the strip last minute. We didn't realize that they close the damn reservation lines at a certain time. So we were assed out. We were on our way to Vegas with no where to stay and not a clue what we were gonna do when we got there. We left like about 10:30pm Friday night and ended up getting to state line like around 2:30am. So we tried booking again and no luck any where in stateline. We were tierd and sleepy. Really needed a place just to crash. So here we go and say let's call Gold Strike and see if they book this late just for this night. And what do you know, they did and had available rooms. So we said F*** it, let's book the room! When we entered the casino it was kinda lonely, but didn't look that bad. There were only old people, we were like the only young ones. So we go straight to the room and I walk in busting an Orkin man looking to see if any bugs checked in before we did. Room didn't really look bad, but it look old! So I go pull sheets on the bed to the side looking for any bed bugs or any nasty sh**. Bed looked ok, except for women hair here and there. I rate this place a 1 star cause the bed was hard, not comfortable at all! Tossing and turning all night! Our shoulders were aching the next morning! Didn't get any damn sleep! When we checked out we decided to eat brunch at the buffet down stairs before heading to Circus Circus, which we booked a room after all. Now let me tell you the brunch was not that bad! The food was fresh and good. I actually enjoyed my brunch. But any how don't plan last minute, and try not to stay here. I know we will never stay there again...

Rating the hotel, not the casino or food. For 30 minutes out of Vegas and $25 dollars a night, Gold Strike wasn't as bad as I imagined it could be but was far from gold.

I dig the classic casino look of the flashing bulb signs and grand brass hanging lamps in the lobby. But the rooms need help. Not only have they not been remodeled in 30-40 years, but they are not very clean. For example, the sheets were clean but the blanket between them and the comforter was in need of a serious wash to get other people's hair and who-knows-what-else off it. Gross.

Gold Strike is a great example of an establishment that has a lot of potential but loses customers due to neglect. Reinvesting in a remodel and cleaning up the entire building and grounds would cost an arm and perhaps both legs, sure, but would get people other than truckers in for the old Vegas look and wanting to stay

I want to give this place a better review, but right now it's a shadow of a former self. Of a future self, I hope.

We got sucked in with the $6.99 lunch buffet...

You get what you pay for, nothing over top, but enough food to get you through to the next meal.
Place is old-school all around even the employees.
Table limits are at their lowest and not too many people were present on a Monday afternoon.

If you're accustomed to higher end accommodations then this might not be the place for you. If all you need is a quick, economical place to stay while on the way to/from Vegas, this'll work. Just lower your expectations to a bed, clean sheets, no frills. The people at the front desk were very nice, too.

Ok.. i know what your thinking. Why 4 stars for this old place. My review is also following "It's the little things"
Also this is not review on the Hotel as I didn't spend a night here.
I just ended a weekend at the Mandalay bay and went shopping, saw a show and had dinner at the Venetian. So I was enjoying my self in Vegas, however we were hungry and needed to eat on the way home. and I didn't want to stop at a Denny's. So our hunger made me pull over and try out the food at this place. We Enjoyed the lunch buffet which was OK, but for $6.95 a plate there is no way anyone can complain. It was great. also had great Pecan pie! and I was dying to try the free arcade but I didn't have time to find it as I was enjoying my self on the $1.00 roulette!
However I was most impressed with Casino itself. It has a beautiful classic Casino look and feel. Almost as if time stood still there. It smells clean, no cigar or dirty wet carpet smell, and it is just so classic.
The Table dealers all wear old style Dealer uniforms, you get a feeling you are Wyatt Erp gambling.
The people staff are really friendly, feels like a mom and pop shop. The staff looks like they've been there for over 20 years, so you get a warm comfortable feeling.
Ok and the slots pay in coins! what tha!! I forgot what that was about or why it is such a big deal, but there is a fun feeling when your machine pays coins and your walking around with a bucket.

So i decided I may not stay the night here, but it will be a stop on my way to or from vegas.
If its to Vegas i may stop for that prime rib do some gambling and if its away from vegas i will stop for the breakfast and $1.00 roulette. Maybe i'll get a chance at the free arcade!

Bottom line, i hope this place stays around forever I'd like to see this place saved as an antique.

We stopped here after a bad nights stay at Primm. I didnt dare try the food at Primm so saw the Gold Strike and stopped in for breakfast. It was not bad. I had the Prime Rib breakfast with eggs, hashbrowns and pancakes for 9.99. The quality of the food was above average and I really didnt have any complaints. The service was excellent and I was in and out. The cut of steak was average, thats why it got 3 stars, but for 9.99 it was a true vegas experience.

$1 roulette! Can't beat that on your way out of town. Casino is dark and feels dirty, but its not so bad. Bathrooms are kinda gross so beware. But otherwise a fun place to stop for some cheap gambling!

Anybody spending the night at this DUMP for any amount of money or even FREE is out of their mind. Think 1970's casino hotel with ZERO updating and VERY little cleaning done in the past 40 years.

The only thing good about this place is the $9.99 prime rib meal which is actually pretty decent and comparable to a $15.00 prime rib special at a Vegas casino cafe. It aint Lawry's quality, but it also doesn't cost nearly $60 a plate either.

This casino is not the place to go if you are sensitive to the smell of smoke! We stopped to eat and the buffet was dissapointing, to say the least. Salty...yes! The rice was half raw...the meat was dry, the green beans were way over cooked. The tamales were okay, as well as the corn on the cob. Desserts looked okay but were sitting out too long. Maybe lunch would be better, but don't go at the end of the dinner hours. We did not enjoy our meal... =P.

I stayed here awhile back, however I don't think I'd go there again given the option.

The rooms were nice and huge, the bed a good size. However, the blankets...well I have a fear of the top cover in hotels now because of them.

They brought us six different covers, and they all smelt so bad I wound up going and buying a blanket of my own and asking for fresh sheets to make the bed myself with.

The place is in the middle of nowhere, and I mean it.. It's a good way from both the state line and Vegas...

This review is more for "It's the little things...."

The drive from California back to Vegas is fairly boring, no matter the time of day. I thought that I'd be able to make it from latter half of California to home without having to stop, but that last soda was telling me otherwise.

You have a selection of the casinos at the state line, Gold Strike in Jean, and really, those are all your options from state line to Vegas proper. I thought I could make it. I finally gave up.

The casino is out in the middle of nowhere. If you're at the Gold Strike, that's it. That's the only thing around, especially since the Nevada Landing got wiped out two years ago. But it looks old-style western inside, and while not busy, is kept up enough.

So why the 4 stars? Seeing the sign: "Free Arcade Play on Most Games 24/7". "Certainly not", I thought. "There's probably some catch".

While I could go on and on about the increasing decline of the the state of arcades these days, sure enough, they were true to their word. So not only was I able to put an end to my "Pee pee dance" (which is "an amazing and well choreographed production" according to recent reviews), I was able to play a few rounds of Ms. Pac-Man before I continued my trip home. So while I merely came in to get my business done, I found a unexpectedly small pleasantry that ended up giving me a chance to stretch my legs and put a smile on my face. Thank you, Gold Strike and Ms. Pac-Man.

As I said, it's the little things....

4 big stars for their Gold Rush Cafe. Saw their prime dinner for $9 sign from their freeway and wanted to try it out.

So worth it, came with the prime rib (which was good), a baked potato (sourcream chives butter for free), a corn, and a tasty soup.

My friends ordered similar entrees and loved it. I appreciated the good service and old school decor. Next Vegas trip, I'm definitely stopping by Gold Strike for a prime rib visit.

Gold Strike is like a piece of history, a time capsule sitting in the middle of the desert. Slots all pay out in coins (no ticket vouchers). Decor is like 1970's old western films. Is a charming place to visit and walk through on your drive to Primm. Believe it or not, they have a nice little arcade hiding downstairs for the video game fans.

My family would stop by this roadside casino, and it's twin sister the Nevada Landing(closed), all the time during our trips to and from Vegas. We'd stop here to grab something to eat, use the bathroom, or do a little bit of gambling(Not for me, I was a teen at the time) or last second gambling if we're on our way home.

My last three trips to Las Vegas(2002, 2004, 2007) as an adult, I've either stayed here or at Nevada Landing(before it was closed). Unlike the new, megaresort casinos, the Goldstrike is relatively small and layed out in a straightfoward manner. So as soon as you enter the casino floor, it is easy to know which direction to head.

The rooms are cheap as hell. On weeknights you can get a room for under $20 for certain months. But so what? The rooms are clean and basic. After a day of fun, you just need a big bed to crash in. The money saved can be spent on other things. Another thing I like about this casino is that the parking is easy. Unlike the big hotels with their confusing indoor parking structures, the outdoor parking space is large and straightforward.

I've been to their buffet a couple of times awhile back. Small selection, bland, and low quality. Mostly I've eaten at the Gold Rush Cafe. Each time I order their Prime Rib dinner which is a great deal. Usually $7.99 or $8.99 for a large Prime Rib with all the sides. Taste good too.

The casino tables are usually kinda empty and there are very low limits. The people who work here seem low energy and uninterested.
Whatever, doesn't bother me. Old school casino is what this is. Might not be around for too much longer. So I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Stopped here on our way home from Las Vegas.... barrrrf! We paid $11.80 each for our "Holiday bruch" since it was Labor Day... We barely made it for the breakfast portion which consisted of, gross eggs, french toast that was still frozen in the middle, sausage, bacon, potato cakes which were actually good, oatmeal, grits, and salad... By the time we got up from our first less than stellar plate the lunch items were already out... "teriyaki chicken" which appeared to be dry baked chicken with teriyaki sauce somewhere nearby, potato wedges, canned corn, tortillas, ground beef, and some funky variety of salmon that looked white... They had quite a few scattered desserts to choose from as well as one of those soft serve machines...

When we first walked in we attempted to find a table for the 8 of us since they don't seat you... we were told the bigger tables were in the back... we went over there and they didn't have ANY big tables clean, they had two back to back one and a half of them occupied and were going to seat us there because it was "easier" after we stood there and the guy didn't come back for a while we were wondering what happened to him... He came back and told us it was really busy today, even though most of the customers were actually the maids from the hotel eating lunch... then he stuck two tables together that weren't the same height and called it a day... He got our drinks.. the orange juice was horrid and watered down and the coffee was burnt...

If you're hungry, don't stop here! Especially if you're easily carsick because that food just begs to come back up! Bad times!

The website can tell you a lot about this place. http://www.stopatjean.com is named so because no one in their right mind wants to stop here since they just stopped at the much nicer state line and can't wait til the strip.
I can tell you that you don't want to stop here, and you should listen to me and your natural instincts.
Sorry, the hotel is disgusting. So disgusting that I just stayed on the casino floor all night long. I didn't eat anything because I didn't want to throw up all over my friends. I'm sure **39** dollars a night sounds very tempting on a Friday, but I'm telling you that if you value your life don't stay here. Walking down the corridor to your room is like walking through a run-down haunted house. There was absolutely no one there and I felt like I was going to get sucked into the badly painted walls via some hidden passage. Don't do it.

Not quite Vegas...but close...

This was my first time to Jean, Nevada (you know...the casino stop in between Stateline and Lost Wages) and I must say...I was very happy with the Gold Strike Casino. You'll see the giant lit up billboard announcing a $6.99 prime rib dinner & $.99 cent biscuits & gravy as you're traveling to LV, pull over and get some. Surprisingly...the food is good. The rooms are reasonable and clean as well. Gold Strike reminds me a lot of the way Las Vegas used to be...glittery and a little seedy...a nice diversion from Las Vegas' current amusement park atmosphere.
