We were recently in Excelsior with a collection of great friends for dinner and drinks. A few of those friends were Excelsior locals/regulars and knew the area well. When we left the dinner establishment I noticed our crowd migrating around the corner and down the street. Not knowing the area well, I inquired as to where we were all headed. The response was "Haskell's" Â in a tone that (oddly enough) made me feel as though I should have known that.
After hearing many different stories of Haskell's over the years I was glad to finally be able to visit. The bar was busy but not overcrowded, and they had live music. Just about everyone there looked as if they'd had a few, but the vibe was pretty friendly. Our drinks were cheap and came out quick. I can't say much about the patio since it's November and they had it closed. I also didn't order anything to eat, but I'd expect the menu to be a complete assortment of the typical upper Midwestern bar fare.
Since it overlooks Lake Minnetonka, Haskell's probably isn't what some would expect to find in Excelsior - and that's definitely not a bad thing! I think most of the Haskell's reviews intend to advise yelpers against setting expectations too high, and I certainly echo that sentiment. Don't get me wrong - it's not a trashy establishment or anything to that effect. Just a cool local bar to have some drinks and some laughs with friends.
Cheers!
