I've never been to Headliners, so I don't know what kind of conditions this bar/venue was in prior to my visit (attended The Jamboree this past weekend). I think this place is destined for heavy shows - dirty floors, broken down buildings, bare rafters, huge venue space. There's no insulation, cooling, or heating system. The bathrooms are what you expected - dirty. The food and drinks were moderately priced, just remember to bring cash.
I don't know if it was just for this particular fest, but there was barely any security. I walked in with a tallboy, two flasks of whiskey, and snack items without fear of being frisked. It's a good thing for responsible attenders, just don't be the jackass who brought in and flashed his gun during Every Time I Die's set which resulted in a abrupt and early closing.
Went last night for a Get Up Kids/Saves The Day show and it totally brought me back to my college days for two reasons: 1. awesome tunes that I listened to between classes and while churning out papers at 4am. 2. A total lack of air conditioning like my freshman year dorm.
Well, that's not true. There was plenty of air at the venue....in the back of the room by the bar. But that's not really where the throngs of people were during performances so...yeah. It was hot as hell up there by the stage. Sticky people, rock and roll energy, etc....I feel totally unpunk rock saying this but alas I'm not a spry 19 year old anymore able to deal with crappy conditions. Instead I like to be cool and comfortable while I listen to music.
The rest of the venue wasn't bad though. It was clearly an old warehouse transformed into a venue with the painting of black walls and the building of a stage. The bar area was actually pretty nice (and cool!) with booths and video games and a few tvs airing the bachelorette (....?). They also had these super awesome sassy bartenders what I genuinely loved watching as they were totally taking the piss out of all the drunk dudes stumbling up to them. I actually applauded one gal's sass towards a dude who blanked out on paying her for his shots. WELL DONE.
If a band I really loved were playing here I'd probably make my way down there for another show in cooler months but if it's another summertime date I'm pretty sure it would take a lot of love for me to go.
