I came here on a random Tuesday after work to unwind. Unfortunately, I missed the live jazz music since they only have the band on certain days of the week.

Walking in, I was impressed by its inviting and warm marble decor.  The lounge is cozy yet spacious enough for the parties not to be too close together.  The bar is classy looking with comfortable couches to relax in instead of the regular tables and chairs.

I didn't order any food, but they make an awesome top shelf margarita.  The service was top notch, so needless to say, it's a definite come back.

This place has great live jazz and deliciously comfortable seating.  I absolutely love the ambiance.

The Poire Martini was divine - but the fabulous music would have made any cocktail dance.

Came here for a happy hour a while ago where they were having a live jazz band playing out in their patio area.

Overall it was an ok experience- the outside area was enclosed which made for a lot of echos and a very loud jazz band where I could not talk to my friends at all.

Food was a bit pricy for happy hour and the selection fairly limited.  Service was slower too.

Not sure if it's different when everything's inside or if they every open up the outside (without it being enclosed) but I'd be willing to stop by again.

I love this bar, it's the closes that I ever felt being home in SF. Downtown is cool, but man after a certain hour it's turn weird. Just saying. Very classy and nice.., I like jazz. The art deco decor is awesome, great place just to hang out with good friends, alternative to dancing downtown. Not sure what some reviewers are talking about seating. Better than other places.

Drinks were okay, food was excellent, service mediocre/poor and the furniture is horrible!  Went there for a friends b'day get together but I doubt I'll go back just because of the seating.

There are much better places in downtown SJ.

I definitely liked this atmosphere, cozy couches, very chill, nice jazz music.  Drinks were good, food was just ok.  We had meatballs which ended up being 2 gigantic meatballs, not expecting that, along with shrimp, again 2 gigantic shrimp with the heads and eyes staring at me, ahh, quite freaked out by that! We had a salad as well which was not bad and ended with a pumpkin cheesecake, also not bad, but not super impressive either. Also for what you get the food is expensive. Drinks are as well, expect to spend $11  for a mixed drink, unless you go to happy hour, then its $8.
I think this is a place I would go back to for drinks and just to hang out, maybe dessert, but I'd definitely eat before next time!

Been to the Hedley on more than a few occasions. It was lust at first sight-- the swanky décor, the dim lights-- the cool cozy furniture. It can be an ideal spot to meet for dinner or lunch.

On a couple lunch hours, I've dropped in and they have had complimentary wine tastings and live music! Woo hoo. Can't beat that.

One thing I can and will always count on with the Hedley Lounge, is no matter how many people are in the room or whatever day it is, it is consistently the same--

5 Star Service- Superb. Always personable and on it. Fast, quick. Know their menu well and all the drinks

3.5 Food- It's great and stays in line with the seasons, but making a dish taste great shouldn't always be left to soaking it in so much olive oil.. (there are so many other amazing spices out there!) I prefer to order a couple appetizers to go with my drinks-- the Brussels Sprouts, Roasted Beets or even their Butternut Squash Ravioli.

5 Star Atmosphere- Any time of day, this place is huge, but still remains intimate and cozy-- using great lighting and placing of furniture-- I could be sitting near a big group and not hear a word they're saying nor even notice them!

4.5 Stars Drinks-- Always the best mixed drinks-- and very generous bartenders!

Love this place for always being on their A-game. Go Hedley. :-)

Jazz is something that I dont generally seek out, but if it's good then Ill end up staying. Or the artist has to be someone like Charlie Hunter, that compels me to go. However from all of SJ's "clubs" and rowdy bars, this actually makes for a good alternative when you want "chill"

We walked in about 9:40pm on a Sunday night. We didn't realize the bar closes at 9pm on Sundays. When we had called in earlier, we were under the impression they were open until midnight. The bartender was there and informed us they were closed. But she said she could make us a quick drink. There were 5 of us and to make it easier on her, we decided to get 5 Sidecars. She said she didn't have the right kind of alcohol to make them. So we asked for 5 Old Fashioned cocktails. Through all this she was giving us attitude. When two people walked in later, she asked if those were our friends. They were not. And she rolled her eyes, and she says see, this is why I told you we were closed. Now they're going see me making drinks and want something. It would have been better if she just had told us they were closed and couldn't make us any drinks. The drinks weren't that great either.

I really like the decor and ambiance of the lounge though. I have been there several times before. Sometimes they have live jazz which is great. Too bad the bartender's bad attitude lowered the number of stars I gave this place.

I gave this three stars because I have to give a rating in order to post this.

This review is only about smoking. Read other reviews if you don't care about smoking.

If you're looking for a place to enjoy a smoke with your drinks, this is no longer it. Smoking is no longer allowed even on the outdoor patio. Do not go to this place if you're looking to enjoy your cigar or pipe. Yelp has it mislabeled.

I left because I was looking for a place to smoke cigars with friends. For all I know this place is five-stars. It just has a misleading reputation and an incorrect listing here, regarding smoking.

I will always have very fond memories of the beautiful and exquisite Hedley Club at the Hotel DeAnza in downtown San Jose.
My husband took me here on our first date in October of 1997 and we literally fell in love while listening to the live jazz-drinking wine at the bar. We still go back and love it even more today!
Great service and great food at La Pastai!

The Pros - the decor and ambience are top notch, and the live music is usually pretty good. The bar menu contains some great classic cocktails, and some nice modern interpretations and inventions.

The BIG Con- the drinks just aren't up to par. The menu is on point, and mixes some classics in with the sweet pseudo-martinis, but the bartenders simply don't have the chops to implement the menu. My old-fashioned came with one of those fake, chewy, high-fructose corn syrup and food dye cherries mashed into it. Using those cherries in and of itself is an unforgivable offense for a bar that is trying to market itself as a place where one can get a fine cocktail.

More generally, the cocktails here are never well-balanced, and the bartenders don't know their craft. They know the recipes for the drinks they've been given and nothing more.

A skilled bartender behind that bar, if allowed to bring in some proper mixers, bitters, garnishes, syrups, cordials, and so forth, could work miracles, and transform the De Anza from a disappointing, yet above-average, local bar into a world-famous drinker's destination.

I've been here a bunch of times (Wednesday evenings) for their jazz jam. There are a bunch of really good local musicians, including some kick-ass high school players. They have a decent happy hour as long as there's not a show at the HP Pavilion. I love the room with the incredibly high ceiling, those huge old-timey wooden ceiling supports and the paintings on the ceiling. I just used "ceiling" 3 times in one sentence.

Live music is hard to find in the South Bay, so my wife and I value this club. The lounge is 1920s art deco with a high ceiling and a fireplace. There are about 20 seats, so we like to arrive well before the 8:30 band start and order off the bar menu or if you ask you can order off the full menu from the restaurant.

The service is good and the food is very good. The music is usually jazz and the bands perform well.

It's the perfect antidote to the "what should we do tonight?" blahs.

This is a great place to come and get drinks!  We didn't have any food other than the slice of cake we got after we had our drinks, but the pizzas they serve looked pretty good!

Their specialty drink menu was varied without being obnoxiously long.  We each had two different drinks and they were mixed perfectly, which is nice because nothing can ruin a drink faster than having things mixed incorrectly!

The inside of the place is super nice, its dim and classy, and once it was cooler outside they opened up all of the french doors to the outdoor seating area and a jazz band set up next to the piano inside, it was all very nice.

I would definitely coke back for drinks again!

During the summer they're having "Parties on the Patio" on Thursdays starting at 5:30. When we went, there was a delightful cover band and a whiskey tasting! I was afraid it would be too swanky and feel uncomfortable, but it was actually very lovely to hang out on the patio with my friends.

The happy hour is probably one of the best I've been to, mostly for the food. Beer is $3, well drinks are $4, wine is $5, signature cocktails are $7, and small bites are $4. We had two drinks and an appetizer each for $15! The signature cocktails were hit or miss, but the French Pear and Hedley Manhattan were good.

We really enjoyed the onion rings and ravioli from the small bites menu; other items include french fries, warm mixed olives, and fava beans with onion and pecorino. We didn't have any of the bigger items such as the pizza, but a server accidentally brought the kale and meatballs to our table and they looked gooood and a nice size.

The drinks at the bar are a little weak, but everything else is out of sight. Best happy hour food menu anywhere. The food it great even at full price. Real wood fired pizzas with genuine leopard-spotted crust. Best butternut squash raviolis anywhere, and only $4 at happy hour!

I love the room and the Orientalist paintings on the walls. The music at night is fantastic. As many favorite places that I've lost in San Jose lately, re-discovering the Hedley has made up for it.

The Hedley Club is my home away from home. I am a San Jose native and worked at the Hedley for 6 years up until I moved to Tampa in 2003. The time I spent working at the Hedley Club was one of the most amazing times in my life that I will never forget. I started off as a cocktail waitress and learned how to bartend from some of San Jose's most talented mixologists. Many of the regulars became some of my best friends that I still keep in touch with today.

There is something magical about the Hedley Club. Upon entering, you will be captivated by the gorgeous decor and beautiful staff. The drinks are not only cutting edge and tasty, they are classy.  The food is nothing shorty of incredible and they have wonderful Happy Hour Specials.  This is the perfect place to go for pre-dinner drinks or to spend a romantic evening after dinner. If you are alone, it is a great place to grab a bite and watch a game on tv. The live music at the Hedley is some of the best in the Bay Area and always features incredible, local talent.

I was last in San Jose last month (May, 2012) and I hate to say, my overall trip was disappointing but my time spent at the Hedley Club was spectacular. My last day in town was spent at the Hedley after my plans to be in San Francisco were ruined. I was feeling a bit lonely and the staff made me feel like I was at home. I sipped on Champagne, enjoyed some appetizers and mingled with some of the regulars. The kindness of the staff was not only genuine, but it turned a bad day into a good one. I have to say a big thank you to bartenders Nicole and Paul who not only make fabulous drinks, they are some of the most hospitable bartenders I have ever encountered.

This place is a gem in San Jose! The Hedley Club will always hold a special place in my heart and in my memories.  :)

Came here for happy hour after work one day with my dept and another dept. Our work was paying the tab so we ordered lots of food from their HH menu.

    Things we tried:
*Fried calamari- they were okay, but I don't like the baby tentacles, I prefer rings or slices
*Onion rings- yummy but tiny portion, literally like 8 rings on a plate
*French fries- eh french fries are french fries.
*Butternut squash ravioli- yummy but only had 4 pieces on the plates (what the...?!)
*Margherita pizza- my fav dish of the night. Not too much crust but good flavor
*Pepperoni pizza- it was good, a little oily b/c of the pepperoni
*Angus burger- didn't get a chance to try this, I was stuffed.

I also had a French martini which they made very well (some places put too much chambord) and tried an extra drink we had, the Nicolette (soo good, it had champagne and tasted like fruit punch).

Prices looked pretty reasonable for HH, between $4-6 for each dish and the drinks were reasonable. I enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and comfy chairs.

I love Jazz night! This is an excellent venue for this. I imagine a Mad Men character drinking and smoking while enjoying the nice jazz tune here.

This is reminiscent of a bar in a SF down town historic hotel. Rich mahogany wood...soft buttery leather couches. Rich carpet and scattering of rugs pulls the whole place together.

Awesome cheerful and on point staff. Good food.

I'd say this has a great potential of a date night place:)

    Thanks Jen C! :)

This place just earned another star!

GORGEOUS lounge! FREE live jazz! Happy hour appetizers ALL NIGHT when there's live music (except if there's an event at HP Pavillion)! YUMMY appetizers! GREAT drinks! Pretty QUICK service even when they're super busy! Big flat screens to watch Sharks play!

I wish they didn't stop happy hour when the Sharks are playing in town. This place is a bit pricey...but I love to lounge on a couch enjoying a glass of wine or a mixed drink, munching on appetizers, listening to live music and watching the Sharks.

I like you Hedley Club Lounge, I hope your awesomeness never goes away.

    I love this place!

It is a breath of fresh air from the "harder" atmosphere that occupies the rest of downtown San Jose.  The inside is decorated beautifully, and they play live jazz thurs-sat evenings.....for FREE!

They do serve alcohol, so it's a great place to start your night before you walk to a bar/club.

Nicest bathroom in all of San Jose, hands down.  Don't you forget.

I was at this venue yesterday for a social event, and enjoyed this place a great deal. I like the laid back-mellow vibe of this place. Also, the Jazz band was pretty good. If you are a fan of ginger, then try the "Moscow Mule" cocktail. Next time I am here, I will definitely check out the patio area as well as the food. The crowd is a good mix of various ages. In all, this lounge is very classy, mellow, and lacking A-holes (Big BONUS). I will be going back.

A side note to the fellas: this is a good place to bring a date, but not to meet an available woman or to mingle/flirt. This venue is still in the "Man Jose" area...so the girl to guy ratio isn't all that appealing to us men.

The Hedley Club Lounge harkens back to a different era and is swanky without being too pretentious.  We came here for happy hour a few days before New Year's Eve and it was pretty quiet and we had our choice of seating.  The happy hour deals are great with $7 cocktails and $4 small bites and make going out a little more affordable.

This place has a great vibe and our server provided some good drink suggestions.  Parking was fairly easy, but I imagine that being within walking distance of the HP Pavilion makes this place a prime spot before any large events.  Otherwise, great place to catch up and grab a drink with friends.

If Don Draper came to San Jose he would spend his night drinking old fashions at the Hedley Club Lounge.

This is not the typical downtown San Jose drinking experience, you aren't going to find a DJ or douche bags handing out fliers for the "big event" they are promoting. Instead you'll find live jazz, quality cocktails, and comfortable seating in an upscale atmosphere.

If you're looking for a place to sit and have  drinks with the boys from Sterling Cooper Draper Price this is definitely your spot.

Lately, life has been giving me a little beating making it necessary to schedule a little happy hour session with a friend .. and what better place to try out than Hedley Club Lounge in Hotel DeAnza in downtown San Jose.

It's such a beautiful, quiet little lounge that doesn't seem to get enough love. Yes, it's a jazz club/lounge.. but you don't need to be older to appreciate all genres of music. When we got to the place, we were the only ones there except for one gentleman at the bar. We were "ooh"ing and "ahh"ing at how cutesy it was, and the plus was there was a big outdoor patio as well!

I ordered a Mai Tai and my friend ordered a pink drink in a tall glass cup. It was a happy hour drink but the name has totally slipped my mind. For some reason I was under the impression that a Mai Tai was a girly, sweet drink.. but boyyyy was I wrong. One sip was all I needed to say, "Dayum, this is some strong sh~t but I ain't complaining!" Haha. I took another sip still in a confused state of mind and confirmed that, yes, it was nasty.. nasty in a good way lol. I felt the effects of the drink within the first few sips.

We ordered the Rustica pizza and shoe string fries. The fries came out and looked extremely disappointing, but I guess we were hungry and didn't think the shoe string fries would be really that stringy. They were sooooo stringy that what meat was on the fry got fried away :( All it was was simply a crunchtastic bundle of crunchiness... a little bit disappointing as I love, love, love fries. But, we still managed to clean the plate teehee! So, it's a-okay.

Anyways, the pizza came out and totally made up for it. Yes, it's a happy hour pizza, but it wasn't as small as I thought it would be since I was assuming from the looks of the shoestring fries :) Mmm, it was good.

My friend ordered another round of that pink drink and I opted for the Side Car.. a martini. Actually, I usually don't like/order martinis but was unaware it was a martini so I ordered it from the suggestion of the waitress. The drink came and I took a sip. Yet another sucker punch from left field.. that drink was dis-gus-ting! She was naaasty. Which equates to: it was strong! But all martinis are, I suppose! I manned it up and drank it all though!

By the time we were ready to leave.. we had only enjoyed about 5 minutes of the live jazz band that had came and set up. I believe live music starts at 8pm. The place got loud quickly so I would suggest turning down the volume a tad so that conversations can still be carried in the lounge. It IS a tiny place after all. Several others were in the lounge now and I'm sure more were on their way.

Summary: STRONG drinks (kudos to the bartender!!), lovely little posh lounge, live jazz music... perfect for a chill night drinking and talking! Oh, not to mention, good, attentive customer service :)

LOVE the vibe at Hedley Club - even without the live jazz. Tons of cozy lounge chairs and sofas, which are perfect for kicking back with one of their signature cocktails. Plus their weekday happy hour from 4-7pm is awesome - most drinks are half price, as well as their pizzas.

If you're into elderflower liquor, Grey Goose pear vodka and grapefruit juice, then you must try the Diving Diva. So smooth and so tasty! And can I give a shout out to the fastest bartenders in the entire bay area? I swear they had the drinks just waiting for me behind the bar. One second I was ordering, and the next, I had a martini glass in my hand.

The art deco interior is gorgeous, and the high ceilings give it a glamorous feel. A perfect spot for some pre-partying, or a late night cap.

I don't drink at all and I'm sick of having to go to all these nicely decored clubs with their super casually dressed patrons and their TERRIBLE music. My music preferences vary, and I love hip hop-but I am sick of the cycle of repetition of Empire State of Mind, Low ("Boot's with the furrrrr....the whole club was looking at hhhhhher!!!" Do I really have to down 8 shots of hen to be okay with their less than stellar music selection?

I thought I'd run out of options when it came to late night down town entertainment. Randomly, I wanted to go to a jazz bar and my best friend suggested this place. We hoped we weren't underdressed (I was wearing a sweater and jeans) and that parking (on a Saturday) wouldn't be an issue. We found parking pretty easily around the hotel, a block away.

We walked in and the bellboy called it: Hedley Club? Walk straight, turn left. Small place, maybe half the size of a ballroom or a little more? Low lights, with the musicians in the corner. Seats were all full, so we ordered some beverages at the bar and milled about. A couple left their seats, and I swooped that as fast as you would for a 50" LCD tv on sale on a Black Friday.

Really great crowd and awesome live jazz music. I think this is the only place in San Jose that I have been in that really understands the concept of LOUNGE. You know, comfortable seats?? Where you can really relax (i.e. lounge?) I had a cran juice and my bestfriend had water that sufficed us for the 3 1/2 hours we were there. We weren't hassled, and everybody behaved as adults do.

They serve food that we were unable to try because the kitchen was closed at 10pm, but the selections sounded yummy! I am definitely going back again.

*Cheap date alert! Go here after dinner and a movie.

This was our official pre-game dinner spot before the Yelp Pley Elite event!     It's been common practice now for the SBC* to have a dinner and cocktails before starting the event.  It makes it easier to comfort the belly and our spirits.  Hedley Lounge was a perfect call for this.    It has a sophisticated (not swanky) atmosphere with their some upscale seats, living room manor décor, and elegant lounge area tables.   The only gripe I have is their low ambient lighting that needs to go up a notch.  It might help while meeting a blind date.  Anyway, let me talk about two of their awesome pre-game dinner cuisines:

    Rustica Pizza
This is screaming with fresh mushrooms.   The cook did not leave any blank spaces.  It was covered with so much goodness of mushrooms that I nearly finished the entire 14" pizza.   Accompanied with Italian sausages, sweet onion, chopped fresh oregano, and Fontina, this was perfect for pre-game meal.  Crust... crunchy bottom and chewy inside!

    Lamb Chops
My friend, Sha B, ordered the lamb chops that arrived perfectly warm and sweating with all the natural juices dripping from the texture.    I was able to sample one piece and let me tell you - the gamey taste of this lamb chop was very slight (the way it should be).   Instead, the tender taste of lamb and this rich punch of herbs and wine sauce harmonized very very well.    I felt like I was judging an Iron Chef battle because I was savoring this bad boy!    If I didn't know any better, I would have ordered this dish along with my pizza.   This definitely going to be my next dish here!

As for the cocktails and wines, I invite everyone to check their unique selection.  <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hoteldeanza.com%2Fmedia%2Fhedley%2520cocktails%2520fall%252009.pdf&s=807ec1eae0802e1c9a586e99dda391211e168760fb7e04623b4c9243b7e83d75" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.hoteldeanza.c…</a>   I haven't spending too much time here yet, but rest assure I will be returning.     Big note to all visitors:  Hedley Lounge is located inside the Hotel De Anza.  You won't see a sign for Hedley Lounge from the street.  You must physically walk through the hotel lobby.     Also, dress up.   The place is sophisticated so no surf or casual wear.

Note to all newbie Yelpers:  Make it a plan to have a light dinner before attending a Yelp Elite Event.    You can't go wrong satisfying your appetite on a light note.   Plus it will get your palettes ready for any samples at the event.

    HAHAHAHAHA!

I do, I do like this place! I went back last week with the crew and low and behold - the food is good and the drinks are even better. It tastes so much better when I hear it's happy hour. Loved the meat and cheese plate... the shoe string fries... the calamari.. and the plate of tasty raviolis was only improved by the crisped herbs that it was topped with.
    *drool

Nothing like drinking your wine/beer while listening to the jazz group performing. And then taking your drink and crew into the back. I can never get enough of the back patio. It's just nice.

    Definitely going back again!

We were in need of a place that was laid back, offered good jazz, and didn't have the "bar scene" that Downtown San Jose is now filled with. Hedley Club Lounge was just that. As the last stop of our evening of de-stress, we couldn't have picked a more perfect place near home.

The lounge is really quite beautiful, though small. The décor has a Spanish Villa feel and gives the illusion that you're in an outdoor courtyard. How clever.  Warm wood tones, fire place and large comfy chairs fill the center area.

It was a bit crowded when we arrived but there were plenty of stools open at the bar. The bf and I popped on over and was greeted by the bartender who turned out to be very hospitable and funny. Since we had just finished dinner, we didn't order any food but everything we saw sure looked and smelled tasty. The wine list was not vast but offered a few choices all with great prices. We settled on a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon at only $32 for the bottle. That's a deal.

The band that night was really talented and played songs that were all slightly reminiscent though we could not place the names. Despite other reviews (or maybe that night was an anomaly) we found the crowd to be quite diverse. Yay!

Overall, it was wonderful and I can't wait to be back.

Hedley's is a fairly typical bar and lounge in mid to upscale hotels.

The lounge is very distinct and separate from the rear courtyard area, but I'll review them as "main lounge" and "rear courtyard".

The main lounge area has a nice central area with deep leather and cushioned sets and large low rectangular glass coffee tables, and the edges consist of the bar (left wall from entry), live jazz corner (Far right corner from entry), a large fireplace (right wall from entry), and additional seating with small seats and small coffee tables.

The far wall is all glass windows and glass doors leading to a great courtyard that has openings to the outside but feels fully enclosed.  The light colored stone floors and fountains and light airy feel are in stark contrast to the darker main lounge area.  This large courtyard area, being technicall outdoors, has large ceiling corner heaters that run horizontally along the crown of the room, and since it's technically outdoors, has several ashtrays scattered around breakfast bar tables.  there are larrger round tables set at dining height seating maybe 6 or 8 people.

Great effort has been made to make this area look classy, but the lounge looks more put together than designed.  Between the bar, the fireplace, the large leather seats, the modern cushioned seats, the orange deep seats, mixed coffee table styles, small cushioned round stools, and the deep day-bed style sofas, there is very little consistency to the lounge.

That's okay....There are many lounges like this that mix things up with whatever furniture they have.  As long as each individual piece or each set looks fairly good, most people don't care.  Neither do I, really, just easily noticeable.

The jazz area was fine too.  But considering the kind of place it was, I was surprised that the music was so unusually loud.  I guess I'm used to more laid back places like the village vanguard in ny where the music volume is a lot lower and you can have some side conversations without screaming.

There did seem to be a few people who were there specifically for the band, and I feel a little sorry for them, as there was a large group of us talking and walking around, other couples and groups as well standing around and moving through the lounge, and kids playing solitaire.  None of this fit with the jazz bar vibe.

Is this my idea of a jazz bar?

    Nope....

Does this work as a hotel bar and lounge?

    Yep....

    Would I come here again?

    Sure.  Why not?

    Was this place A-OK?

    Absolutely.

It was evident from the onset that I was not the typical constituent of Hedley's usual patronage; my attire more gruff and urban than polished and aristocratic, and my company... well... you know how we do.

But critical onlookers aside, the establishment has an air of class and refinement that is sure to leave an impression on whomsoever you might be entertaining for the evening, and the live jazz ensemble adds just the right amount of panache to deem an evening here an eventful affair in is own right.

The plush seating, vaulted ceiling, and a rich and timeless "art deco" influenced design amount to, in my wannabe-artist's opinion, one of the best designed rooms/venues in Downtown San Jose, bar none.

Though I intended to take it easy for the evening and stick to just wine (and the best laid plans oft go awry, yes?), the night started with a fine-though-potent $15 glass of Talisker Scotch; I wasn't impressed with the narrowness of their wine list, but some of their vintages are choice selections.  Scotch just seemed right, under endorsement of Tetsu "SV Best Writer" N.  Most excellent!

All in all, Hedley is a relatively underexposed gem, and I take it the rugulars like it that way.

For discreet solo outings (...hello, cougar!) to unabashed romantic trists (... whoa, couple making face!), Hedley is a striking backdrop.  For an outing on the scale of an SBC UYE invasion, not so much.

I like this place. Nice cushioned couches, not too deep but just enough to be able to sit properly and enjoy the live Jazz music. Its a bit difficult to talk when they're playing but that's normal especially since I came here with a big group of Yelpers.

If I can lie down the couches and snuggle with my loved one while listening to the music, I'll be really happy forever.

Anyway lets get back to reviewing:
The servers are very fast and sharp. I ended up ordering a Shiraz and Pinot during the evening. The decor looks like the interior of an Arabic palace, must be why the tapestries ( are those huge paintings called Tapestries?) all show a well dressed bearded man that may or may not resemble Lawrence of Arabia all over the place. There's also an outside patio which is connected to the lounge (Must be part of the hotel) where you can smoke and listen to the music.

I'll be coming back to this place in the future.
    Hopefully not alone. ..

Went here for a UYE on Friday.  This place is surprisingly nice.  High vaulted ceilings and a classy feeling place with jazz.  It's a pretty large venue with plenty of seating, from couches near the fireplace to chairs and ottomans to regular table seating in the middle and a bar at the end.  Our large group sat near the band, and consequently it was so loud you could barely talk.

The group eventually went to the outdoor seating area which was just as large and totally empty.  We circled around a table that sat 12 until we were ready to leave.

The drinks are decently priced but the service can be a little slow, but this place is for chilling so I'm not going to ding them on that.

I will drop a star for 1) the bathrooms being so hard to find (downstairs around many corners); and 2) the older couple sucking face in the corner not 10 feet away from us.  It made me wish I was drunker.  Ne'er were the words "Get a room!" so close to coming from my mouth.

The ladies - Anna, Kay, and I were back together for the Memorial Day weekend!  Anna and I had a whole evening planned - dinner at the San Pedro Bistro and Wine Bar and then head over to the Hedley Club Lounge for some jazz and drinks.  Unfortunately, our friend's plane arrived late and so we decided to nix the San Pedro Bistro and instead, we headed straight to the Hedley Lounge.  Luckily, Anna being the planner that she is made Kay a gourmet sandwich and so she scarfed that down in the car, "hittin' the spot" as Kay said.

Just as we got seated, the kitchen had closed.  It closes promptly at 10 p.m.  They're known for their mixed cocktails so I ordered the Hedley "Amore-Hito", Anna got the Apple Martini, and Kay ordered a martini but the name of the drink escapes me.  My drink aka mojito was not too strong, just light and refreshing.  Both martinis were a bit strong but had a great flavor to it.

We just sat back in the cozy, comfy chairs and enjoyed the jazz music that was playing.  The room has got great acoustic sound.  Wonderful way to begin the 3-day weekend with my girlfriends.

Went here on Friday and thought it was a great and different place in downtown to hang out. The NO COVER part was a huge plus!

I love the plush couches and the various types of seating available inside. Outside there is also a patio area where people can go and hang out if you don't want to be inside the actual lounge. At first we got one of the individual seats (not the best place to sit if you're with a loved one but good if you don't want to sit too close to the person you're with). The couches on the other hand are a different story (super comfy and a great place to sit and snuggle).

I came on a Friday and they had live jazz that night which was great. Apparently the act normally plays at Yoshi's in Oakland (another spot that I think is great). Lucky for us, no cover is charged at Hedley Club unlike at Yoshi's where I believe I played $20+.

We got the mojitos but unfortunately I didn't think they were that great. The mint tasted a little old and the drink wasn't mixed property. The specialty drinks such as the mojitos tend to run around $10. Beers, I believe, were around $5.

In terms food, if you're there past 10:30ish or so the kitchen is closed so no food. But if you get there earlier, they have a variety of appetizers such as pesto fried calamari and also a good selection of desserts.

There's metered parking out front but if you can't get that, they have a valet as well.

Also like many have mentioned, if you come when a sharks game has just got out, you will find a lot of sharks fans there as well.

UPDATE: 5/11/08- Some friends and I went here again last night to celebrate someone's birthday and Marissa was our server again! So... our server noted that she had read my positive review of her on yelp, and is a fellow yelper herself. What a sweetie, she hooked up a complimentary drink for my friend's b-day! (BTW, the Apple Martini is quite tasty and made with a unique sour apple concentrate, not a sour mix.) I am officially coining the term "6 Degrees of Yelperation" to relate this phenomenon of getting hooked up  or noticed because of a review.

A great place to chill with friends or significant others for free (no cover) and order some excellent drinks, food and desserts. The chairs are ultra comfy and the ceilings have cool, rustic designs to stare up at. My bf has to go to a few jazz shows for a class he is taking and went last night because his professor was performing in a jazz band trio (standard lead guitar, bass, and drums). They were great and they even did jazz renditions of requests like Marvin Gaye's "What's going on", and my request of Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious".

The service was wonderful and our waitress, Marissa was very sweet and accommodated our needs to the fullest. I had to order a dish without pancetta, and she was able to have the cooks remove it from the grilled prawns we ordered. "MOST EXCELLENT", as Bill and Ted would say. Oh, and the cheese ravioli with browned butter and sage were excellent also.

Lastly, we had a great dessert made with a meringue cup, filled with cooked apple pieces and caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla bean gelato. My bf inhaled it, barely giving me a chance to enjoy it.

I must say, the last highlight of the night included a cute couple (in their late 60's/early 70's) sitting on a couch nearby enjoying their dinner and drinks. After the first hour we noticed that they gently went into slumber after finishing their food, drinks and dessert. We amusingly watched them for about 30 minutes before hotel staff eventually asked them to wake up. I'm sure they enjoyed their night! Talk about a chill and relaxing atmosphere!

Have you ever read "Franny and Zooey" by JD Salinger ? It's one of my all-time favourite books, and in it is a restaurant called Sickler's. It's where the steaks aren't that thick (thumb and forefinger held an inch apart), and it's snails. In the first section of this book, Franny and her lame boyfriend Lane go to Sickler's before the big game to order drinks and escargot. In my head, this place is sort of like Sicklers, but with jazz and no snails.

So sometimes I put on a dress that's too nice for Trials and come here. I can't order martinis like Franny did at Sickler's (I'm allergic to gin), but I can drink mojitos. They are excellent here. I wonder if they have a chicken sandwich, because I'm going to need one of those, and a maitre d' to rescue me when I pass out.

I love this place. When I'm here, it's 1955 and I'm not myself. But when I leave, I'm back in awful San Jose, and I've got a parking ticket. Shit.
