To me this is the epitome of a dive bar, you will walk in and get hit by the smell of cigarettes in the air like a ton of bricks. Honestly if it wasn't for that this place would probably get 5 full stars. I recently paid Helga's a visit over the weekend to play some trivia while I was in town.
Despite the fact that this is a full blown bar, they do offer some food which is posted throughout the wall of the bar with colorful construction paper which kind of gives it its own character. Their menu varies from chicken wings, shark fin?, cheeseburger with really good fries, chicken strips, and tater tots to name a few. I have had their burgers before and they tend to be pretty tasty for dive bar standards. On this particular outing I had their chicken tenders basket with fries which were pretty good but nothing to rave about.
They have some pretty good beer selections and they post their beer specials on the wall. Their selection varies from Dead Guy to Bud Light so you really have your pick here.
They usually have trivia here on Thursdays and Saturdays, but expect it to last forever as they wait for teams to turn in their answers even past the length of a song. They host general kinds of questions which range from history, science, sports, to current events. I used to go all the time as their prizes for the winners are not bad at all. $50 bar tab for first prize and they have second and third place prizes as well.
The crowd that tends to frequent this place tends to be regulars from either MCG or Augusta State and some people that live in the neighborhood. Either way its a pretty good crowd. This is probably one of the places that I miss the most about good ol' Disgusta.
