We stopped in at The Hickory Pit for dinner while in Savannah a while back because it was recommended as one of the best BBQ places in the area..
If this is the best Tennessee has to offer for BBQ I need to open a restaurant down there. I love ribs. I cook them all the time at home. Juicy, tender, fall off the bone, tasty ribs. These weren't those.
I have no issue with a dry rub BBQ, but the rub needs flavor. Lots of flavor. Not much there. They did have sauce in a squeeze bottle that you could use. And since the ribs were terribly dry I thought I'd give it a try. The first was a sweet BBQ sauce. All I could taste was honey and sugar. It was more like a sweet sauce for sweet and sour than a BBQ sauce. So then I tried the hot sauce.
Hot sauce should be hot. And have flavor. This was sort of hot, but had almost no flavor worth commenting on. This left me mixing the two sauces trying to come up with something that I liked.
On the other hand, the portions were large, the service was great, and the place was small and clean. But I'm not sure that I would go back.
