I have to say, that i adored this place.  A friend of mine and i rode our horses today about 2 miles to get to the Hideaway and then we tied them up at one of the hitching posts outside and walked in to a true L.A. time warp.  Thank God a place like this still exists!

It was about 2 p.m. on a Friday so there weren't too many people in there (Bonanza was on the tv)  but it felt friendly and the girl working the bar was real nice.  We each ordered a bowl of chili with cheese and onions and i couldn't believe my ears when she said it cost ONE DOLLAR.  I thought she meant the addition of cheese and onions was $1 but the whole bowl with everything was a buck!  And it wasn't bad!  Since it was really cold  and windy out - 50 degrees at 2 p.m. - i ordered a shot of sambuca to warm me up - $4.  I'm used to paying double that at any other place so that was great too.

    Can't wait to go back.

Used to be great place. New owners couple years ago and went to heck. They can't fit the new dart boards cause ceiling is to short. If there's more then a handful of people it's standing room only. Oh yeah even the neighbors hate it.

Turn off the paved road of Kagel Canyon to Don's & Cyn's Hideaway and you've now entered California Western, circa 1900's.  The outside front is wooden, a wide boardwalk flanking the dusty street, a few wooden hitching posts, all that was missing were swinging entrance doors.

The Hideaway dive bar is quaint, maybe 9 comfy stools, and a small second room with more seating and stage for live music.

I wouldn't attach the name grill to this place simply because theres no kitchen.  A small neon sign displays the grill "menu" offers 3 items: Nachos, grilled cheese and tomato soup and is easy to miss!

I couldn't help but notice we were the only ones that ordered food.  With that said the nachos were far from memorable, Ive had better nacho's in a movie theater.  I was hungry, didn't want to waste the food & so I ATE IT and washed it down with a cool brew! :X

What kept me at the bar was the music, I enjoyed listening to some Blue Grass over a Stella!  Also, the untraditional upside-down Christmas Tree was pretty clever!

Not friendly - treat us like strangers who are unwelcome even though we live in the neighborhood.  They would have made a lot of money off of us had they exhibited enough class to be welcoming.  Prepare to be glared at by men in large, dirty cowboy hats.  Part of the ambiance, we get that, but then we were ignored by the bartender.  Might be because we arrived in a nice car.

I love this place. The best Dive Bar. The bartenders are real sweethearts. They have had some hurdles with noise, so the patio closes at ten and they need a security gaurd when there is live music. But all and all, I'm a canyon resident and am so happy to hav thirs hidden jewel only a five minute walk frotm my house.

This place is terrible. If I could give ZERO stars to it, I would. It's really unfortunate that a bar like this exists.

Came here with my brother one night via taxi, and the taxi driver warned us about going here...something about "KKK" and "right up the road"...I didn't catch the whole thing. But, we were trying to be as optimistic as possible. But now, we wish we took heed of his words.

The night started off with us walking up to a Hispanic security guard (there were only 3 Hispanics within a 3 mile radius...me, my brother, and the security guard). He told us its "regulars night", and we were cool with that. We pass the security guard to another door, which was locked (by this time, it must've been 9pm). We knocked, and this crazy bitch opens the door, looks at us, yells at the top of her lungs, and slams the door shut. At this moment, my brother and I are ready to go home, but we decide to stay. Once she walked away from the door, we managed to sneak in and play some darts. We walked to a "crowded" area where the dart board was, and immediately, people around the area walked away as if we smelled bad. Seriously, we have good hygiene and we aren't THAT ugly. Long story short, we arrived there, had 2 drinks, walked 2 miles home, and went to a REAL bar where REAL people can have REAL fun.

Fuck you, Hideaway. I hope you go out of business, you pathetic waste of space.

Truly a secret hideaway in the Canyons.  I've been in the area for almost two years now and had no idea this was here.  We went on a thursday, and there was nothing going on.  Just a couple of regulars and us first-timers.  The place was quaint, very homey, kinda like Cheers, but on a much smaller scale.

They have a full bar and the beers were relatively cheap.  I liked the place for what I needed after work--a quiet place to just chill and have a couple of beers to unwind.  But if you want bustling, loud environment, this place may not be for you.  The one thing I noticed was that, we got there maybe around 7, and by the time we left at 830-ish, the 'Closed' sign was on.  So I don't really know what the hours are.

The food was alright.  Nothing spectacular, but good accompaniment with beers.

K.B.'s review hits the nail on the head. Bands - if you want to play here - keep it quiet.  They should rename the place Whispers.  There is a 90 decibel tolerance level - and if you don't adhere to it - get ready to be chastised.
And if you're in the band and you're thinking you get to drink for free all night - think again. Each band member gets one free draft or a well drink. All this for a total band take home of 180 dollars - that's 45 dollars a member.

It really is hidden away, and without the help of a couple of regulars we would never have found the place.  That being said, I loved the Hideway.  I've never been to a place like this, but I have to say that after my first visit last night I am an instant fan.
It's small, and according to local historians used to be the original stagecoach stop for the area.  It has character, that's for sure, as well as cheap cocktails, great live music and a cast of regulars that is a cross between Cheers and Deliverance (to acknowledge the review below), sounds unlikely but once you go you'll understand.  Best people watching spot ever, but don't bother going if you're looking to fly under the radar.  Everyone knows everyone in this bar, so if you're new, everyone will know.  An old-fashioned country music honky tonk, with a few real cowboys wandering around the perimeter.  The music was amazing, the people were friendly in a non-LA way, which was refreshing, drinks were inexpensive and the bathrooms were passable.  We arrived and left on the early side, and it seemed to be changing up a little as we cruised out around 11pm, more people who were comfortably past their second cocktail in a very small space - loved it.  I'm going to go back soon,  hopefully to check out the late night crowd, although that canyon is a little intmidating late at night...
It's a destination, not a pitstop, and leave any attitude that you might have back in Hollywood, it's not a place for snobby-dobby's.  But if you like a slice of life from another time and place, filled with real people who have real lives, none of whom know a thing about the entertainment industry or IT, then it's a very cool place to hang out. Wear jeans, not the ones with rhinestones, wear your Wranglers, with a cute t-shirt and boots. Again, forgo the rhinestones, you'll see why.
Have fun, don't annoy the bartender and enjoy what has to be the most original place in southern California.

I was back at The Hideaway this past Friday (8/14/09).  My second visit.  I still stand by my claim that the place is cute as can be, almost like something out of a movie.  You just don't see places like this in Los Angeles.  However, I think I should have left well enough alone and stopped after one visit and I would still be smitten with this place.   But thanks to the bartender(s), my infatuation with The Hideaway is over.

To the bartender who complained that the band was too loud - don't hire a live band if you want it THAT quiet in the bar.  And no, the band was not loud.  Believe me.  I hate loud music and carry earplugs to all live shows and even I didn't have to use my earplugs this past Friday and I was easily able to carry on a conversation without having to raise my voice.  You also complained about the band being too loud when I was there on my first visit.  I chalked up the first incident to you maybe having a headache or just being in a bad mood.  But on the two occasions I was there, you complained about the band being too loud.  Why have live music?  Just use the jukebox.

And Ms. Bartender, it is customary to not charge the band for coffee and/or sodas, yet you wanted to charge one of the guys $3.25 for a cup of instant coffee.  Huh?!    Most bars don't even charge for coffee because they figure the person drinking the coffee is the designated driver and the bar is just doing their part to make sure everyone gets home safe.

Yes, my complaints are tiny, but my husband is a musician and these things are probably more irritating to me than to others.

This bar has been here since the 1920's, when Kagel Canyon was a mining community.  It still retains an authentic rustic air, yet the people here are a wide assortment of lawyers, students, moviepeople, homeless, regular folks and horse people.  You might even live next door to an ex-porn star, too!  While The Cowboy Palace at the other end of the San Fernando Valley has the "I Love This Bar" title, it rightfully should go to The Hideaway, surely one of the most diverse atmospheres in all of L.A.  Country, rock, blues, jazz... you name it, they play it here!  Up and coming bands are plentiful, as well as some that are going places.  The drinks, by comparison to just down the road in Hollyweird, are pretty darned good, and there is often a pot of free chili or soup for paying customers.  There is often a birthday party going on, and it's a great place to stop by late when you don't feel like going home just yet.  But the very best part, is on Sat. and Sun. afternoons, when the locals stop by, the weekend bikers tool in, and all the folks on horseback tie up at the hitching posts to come in for a cold beer or two.  We'd like to keep it a secret, but need more and more folks to come by, as this way of life is in jeopardy... newcomers "complain" about the noise of a bar (why move next to one, then?) and about horses clopping down the street at all hours.  Hopefully, all those who enjoy this place can drown out the voices of the naysayers ... for now.
