My son and I decided to try it after passing it many times while shopping at Raley's.

We got the appetizer combo, an order of sweet and sour pineapple chicken and veggie chow mien (soft noodles).

My son had the pot stickers and an egg roll from the combo while I had the fried wontons with the other egg roll. They were all fabulous and I was very excited to try the main dishes.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed as both the chicken and chow mien were not very good, I won't be ordering them again.  But the fried wontons and egg rolls, they are worth going back for.

My family and friends have been going to the Hong Kong for sixty years. My brother drove in from Colorado last night and invited me to join him at the Hong Kong. The Pork Chow Mein with it's crispy nest of deep fried noodles cannot be found anywhere else. The noodles are exceptional and it is the one thing on the menu that has people coming back, over and over. My brother is addicted to the crispy noodles. He has them sent to him in Colorado. The gal that serves most of the time has been there for thirty years. The original family sold the place seven years ago and spent a month teaching the new owners how to make the dishes they have served since opening sixty years ago. Laurie L.'s review so adequately expresses my memories and dining experiences at this restaurant.

I only been here once and i said to my self never again. I came here with two of my friends. the food was not that good, it was way too greasy. I order the mu sho, the pancake was cold and the dish itself was like cover in oil (so digesting). my friends order there specials, i guess. and the soup was like water and msg. there was only one waitress working that day, and it was not at all busy, but for some reason it took her a long time to even take our order, get us drinks, etc.

This place was a bit overpriced for chinese food. I tried it yesterday with my boyfriend and we just ordered take-out. We were like the only ones there so I told him I'd rather go home and eat. We had the beef chow fun, sizzling black pepper steak, and hong kong fried rice. Personally, it was too greasy than I'm used to. Don't get me wrong, I love chinese food and I know it's usually greasy, but this was just covered in oil. The beef chow fun was a bit overcooked because the chow fun, itself, was mushy. The meat was alright, I guess. The sizzling black pepper steak had more bell peppers and onions than actual steak. I felt like this place was a rip off. I heard a lot of great things from people, but when I got here to experience it for myself, I was disappointed.

Yes this restaurant has been in Merced for over 60 years. We've been going to it for the past 30 yrs. Live in LV now..We've flown to Fresno (Allegiant Air) just to have a long weekend and dinner at Hong Kong. Food is great, just as good as it was 30 yrs ago. My fav...pork chow main. Served on a bed of crispy noodles that I've yet to find anyplace else, crunchy veggies, sliced pork with a gravy/sauce I've yet to see replicated. Menu is varied and you'll find just about anything you want.
Service is fine, very friendly and pleasantly paced....Enjoy

This was a great place to eat Chinese food, little or no msg, and the food was still delicious.  I really enjoyed the hot and sour soup, which is slightly different from the hot and sour soups I order from the bay, but the unique combination of ingredients made it quite tasty. Its only mildly spicy, so if you really like it hot, you'll need to special request it.

Other than that, I really liked the ma po tofu over rice.  Again, not too spicy but the flavor was good.

4 star rating - I was pleasantly surprised that the food did not contain high amounts of MSG, salt or grease.

The pricing is pretty steep for some chinese food. The food is not even on par with panda express (yea, really).

No Joke, family owned and operated for over 60 years, my mom is 70 and her parents dined there with the kids every week, and then my mom carried on the tradition with her family! The Hong Kong moved from old town out to the Raley's shopping center, I miss the old location as does my mom. We miss the big lazy-susan in the middle of the tables, the privacy of partitioned seating, the Chinese lanterns with big red tassels, the juke box, and the life-time of memories the old place held, but the one thing that never changed the GREAT FOOD!

We have long since moved from Merced, but when in the area we hit the Hong Kong hard!  They make dishes you just cannot get anywhere, believe me I have tried.
The pork chow mein has long lean thin strips of pork unlike I have ever had anywhere else but what really makes it unique is the bird nest of crispy noodles they drape the chow mein over. These noodles are hand made and deep fried and formed into a big noodle nest, their so special people order extra to take home (we have many times). When your plate comes you think how am I going to eat this giant mountain? No problem, everything thing they make travels well, reheats well, freezes well, you name it.

Their soups are amazing, and if you love vegtables order the chow-yuk, I know it sounds bad with the word yuk in there, but it's amazingly gooood!
