We had a marvelous lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered wine, a cheese plate with goat and sheep cheeses and sandwiches on gluten free bread. We also took gluten free cookies to go. All of the food was very fresh and yummy. The owner's parents were there working and were very friendly. We will stop again when visiting the wine country.
Review Source:Just had lunch today at the Horse Radish in Carlton with my family. Â The spot was recommend to us by someone at a winery and we thought we would give it a try. Â The place was very good and I would definitely recommend it for lunch. Â I had half turkey sandwich and salad. Â The name itself doesn't do it justice. Â The turkey was pepper smoked and yummy with avocado. Â The salad had cranberries, hazelnuts and feta cheese with a creamy vinaigrette dressing. Â I made all gone. Â My husband had the brie quiche of the day and my daughter in law had the grilled cheese of the day. Â A good time was had by all, and service was very good.
Review Source:So I was lured here with the promise that the beer I desperately sought was once again stocked. This was not a lie.
For the record, its Hirschbräu, doppel-hirsch. That's German for awesome.
Last night I again ordered the pastrami, and once again I confirmed it has no equal. The wife ordered the salmon dip as her main entree. On the side she got the evening special of mac & cheese (so decadently good) and a caesar salad. For dessert I believe she ordered the salmon dip.
Her love affair with that evil sauce really is an obsession. Last summer we bought a meat and cheese plate for a picnic, and a small container of the salmon dip to go. She accidentally left it in our car overnight. The next day I had to drive back to purchase more just to calm her tears of rage.
I can no longer in good conscious hold that 5th star hostage. In fact, this is the only local establishment I would rate a 6th star if it were possible.
My addict of a wife raised her fist in the air and still demands they open up later on week days though.
I've eaten here a handful of times, always get a sandwich and I'm almost always thrilled with it. Â This last time the bread was a little stale. Â The music was loud too. Â Don't go after 6:45 on the weekend if you expect to have a conversation! Â The staff are always great, and the owner is very charming. Â My cheese eating friends were impressed with the quality of the cheese.
Review Source:I will have to go back in order to give it another try because I imagine that this place really deserves 4 or 5 stars. Â At this time I can only give it 3.
I walked in with a friend and all we wanted was a cup of coffee. Â We were greeted warmly. The place was maybe 1/4 occupied. We settled onto a cute settee and comfortable chair. Â
The lovely server brought a large to-go cup and asked for $4. Â She did check back with me on several occasions to make sure I had enough cream, she put the cream into the cup behind the counter rather than letting me put the cream in my cup.
$4 for a to-go cup of plain boring coffee is silly.
The decor was comfortable and the staff seemed friendly.
We had such a good experience here.
Amidst a day of wine tasting we needed a little something-something to go with our next round. Â We bopped into the Horse Radish and were greeted by stellar service, a variety of meets and cheeses and even half gluten free bread and half regular, to service all members of our party.
Next time we'll plan ahead and do a proper meal with wine here.
Sat down and had a wine tasting at our table, nice meat and cheese selection, bruscetta that was OK, and 2 nice baguettes. Didn't have any hot food or dessert so I can't comment on that. It's in wine country so its not cheap. I would gladly go back and hopefully will get the chance to.
Review Source:We were in a hurry, and had about five minutes get some food for the road. The woman who owned the place totally got this and prepared us an excellent cheese plate to go. Five different kinds of cheeses, all different, all well cut, all in a very short period of time. She was great!
The place seemed nice, airy and decent, but the service shone through. Cheese was hella good as well.
Yelp rarely steers me wrong, and this was no exception. After a very long afternoon of drinking in wine country, one tends to need food... and maybe a little drinking that occurs while sitting down.
We ordered a large meat and cheese plate ($18.00), and while the portion was not mind-blowing, the fun of choosing one's own meat and cheese was. The options were fairly overwhelming, but at last we settled on Truffle Stack cheese (ooooh, yes!), Â and four other items. Delicious munching ensued.
We also ordered a flight of local wines, and it was nice to savor without the imperative to buy, buy, buy when we were done.
The place was deadly quiet when we were there (mid-afternoon), but I doubt it's like that at a normal meal time.
The server was attentive without being too attentive.
Highly recommended.
Had lunch there today! What a lovely breath of fresh air.......nice decor, spotlessly clean, and roomy. We had the pastrami on artisan bread which was warm and fresh and delish, and shared a portion of their quiche which was the best ever!!!
They have a wonderful beer selection, not to mention the very best of the local wines, and a fantastic selection of cheeses.
I cant wait to go back to try all the other lovely items on their menu
It was a nice day over a long Veterans Day Weekend. Â I came back from the beach prominently displaying my pink "Peace, Love, Party" sweatshirt. Â I thought what are the odds that I will run into anyone I know in Carlton.
Well, actually, pretty good I guess as I tried to cross my arms in front of my silly shirt and chatted with a couple of people from church. Â Perhaps, I'm too old for the frivolity of an ironically themed shirt, but I digress here.
The Horse Radish is a low key wine bar and has many little spots to sit which remind you somewhat of a living room in some areas and a pub in other areas. Â The back room has a couple of pool tables if you want to partake in that sort of thing.
We started out to sit on a couch and then found some bar stools with a view of the Boise State game in Hi Definition. Â We ordered a couple of flights of their red wines. Â They came out with about six glasses and we both tried some of each one of the glasses of various reds and noted the ones that we liked. Â One of the ones I really liked that day was a Pinot Noir from Biggio Hamina Cellars.
The lighting in the bar is a low and the wood dark it makes it a nice place to hang out and sip wine. Â
We had some sandwiches while we were there as well. Â A huge turkey sandwich on focaccia bread was tasty and helped soak up some of the wine.
I'll be back to try it again, it looked like there was some seating out front for nicer weather and the staff was friendly and kept checking back with you.
Don't think some of your Portland friends won't be there because they will. Â Leave the Peace, Love, Party shirt at home.
I saw a magazine cover that named Carlton the "Winetasting Capital of Oregon". Â It's probably right, and Horseradish plays right along with that identity. Â You can taste a good (not stellar, but good enough for me) selection of wines, get some cheeses/meats to go along with said wines, get a sandwich and soup if you're hungry, watch the game on TV if it's on, or play some pool in the back. Â As with the rest of Carlton, it's pretty chill, folks are friendly, and I'll definitely be back. Â Oh and the food is quite good too.
Review Source:Great wine (and beer!) selection? Â Check.
Nice atmosphere? Check.
Delicious cheese and meats? Check check.
Amazing dessert? Â Crap, I didn't get a chance to try any - but the menu was impressive!
What's not to like about The Horse Radish? Â Absolutely nothing! Â Julie and her staff are super accommodating for groups. Â I staffed a casual gathering there over the weekend for my university's alumni association. Â It was our third year meeting there, and I can say with certainty that we'll be back next year.
I love The Horse Radish!
Great little spot to stop and have a bite to eat while wine tasting. Â They offered artisan cheese plates, upscale sandwiches, and salads. Â The atmosphere is unique, they have a sparsly decorated space, that is quite large and the seating isn't crowded at all. Â Some people were sitting on sofas, while others were perched up on stools next to tall tables. Â There were even a few tables in the back on a patio.
Review Source:Fantastic atmosphere in the heart of Oregon wine country. Great cheese selection, strong wine list and happy, engaging owners.
Loved the live music the two nights I was there.
Also went in for lunch, and the smoked ham with fig jam was stunning.
If every town had a Horse Radish, the world would be happier.
Horseradish is a great little wine bar and snackatorium right in the heart of downtown Carlton. It provides a great respite from the ardors of marathon tasting days and a good place to get off your feet and refuel with grub. They also offer plenty of wine if you need to keep drinking after the tasting rooms close at a woefully early 5 or 6pm. Plus they offer live music on some nights, a pool table in the back, and a patio out the back side of the bar.
For wines, the focus is mostly local with some offerings from Washington as well. On the food side, think small plates like hummus, olives, almonds, meats, cheeses, etc. The cheese list is actually pretty impressive, with stand out options including the Rogue blues, Humboldt Fog, Cougar Gold, Roaring 40's and more. For meats, a fairly short but sweet collection of soppresata, capicolla and various other cured pork and beef.
The service is friendly but laid back, and at least when we visited on a Saturday had some sort of tasting going on at the wine bar itself. The seating consists of tables and some comfy, lounge-y couches.
While a day of wine tasting might usually leave me wanting a bit more substantial small-plate offerings (almonds and olives don't soak up much vino), it's better than what most tasting rooms kick out. This is definitely a nice little oasis in a sea of pinot.
The Horse Radish is a very nice although slightly chaotically run restaurant. If they get a bit business confusion seems to rein however they seem to pull it out of the fire in the end.
Not surprisingly they have a very good selection of wines. Their food is excellent. We had an artisan platter of meats and cheeses that was fantastic. A brie and smoked salmon sandwich was top flight with fresh bread and smooth creamy brie.
The atmosphere is low key and comfortable. They have an outdoor area in the back. Nice spot to eat between drinking at all the surrounding wineries.
Absolutely love this place...this was our second time in...we had not been in since our first visit in Feb. Â But low and behold, Julie recognized us and greeted us as if we went in every day!
As before we had a great meal....we had the salmon dip with a warm baguette which was awesome. Â We tried some meats and our new favorite cheese(rosemary cheese).
We had a couple of sandwiches as well with wine and local beer.
Played a little pool after, watched some golf and chatted with Julie some more.
I love the place!
I dropped in last week for a quick bite, not knowing anything about this restaurant. Ordered a BLT. It turned out to be an amazing surprise. Everything about it was wonderful and it was probably the best BLT I've ever had. The tomatoes were amazingly fresh and sweet, the bacon done perfectly with salad greens a wonderful sauce. The final touch was that it was on toasted focaccia bread. It was served very simply with thick-cut potato chips.
This is a great stop for lunch on any tour of Oregon Wine Country.
The Horseradish is the perfect pit stop in your tour through wine country. Â They have lots of cheese, sliced meets, wine, beer, and the option to put peppered or candied bacon on anything. Â They also have one of my favorite foods: Â Dipping something delicious into something else that's delicious.
Review Source:Reed, Â get a clue. Â It's February. Â I, for one, am thrilled that we have a place like this here in town, and even more thrilled that they are open in the offseason. Â
The live music on the weekends changes almost every night, and no, you aren't going to hear the next Nirvana. Â What you are going to get is Blues or Jazz or light Country.
You are also going to get all sorts of great local wines, a great selection of cheeses, and a nice variety of small plates if you just want something light. Â
And it is a place where you will see a lot of local winery people. Â I was introduced to a group there last Saturday that included 4 winemakers at the table. Â Now THAT is pretty cool.
They are, of course, also open during the day, and are a very god option if you don't have alot of time to hit the wineries, but want to sample things from multiple wineries at one location.
Glad to have them in town, glad they are open over the slow season.
This little wine bar caters to the spotty wine crowd that meanders around the county looking for the latest wine craze. It's obvious the owner has deep pockets as the customer base would never cover the costs here. In any case they do have live music which is to their credit... although they aren't very venturesome with their choices and seem to hire the same old blues crooners week after week. Check the place out for a grin sometime. There's a dive bar about a block away if you get bored and run out of money.
Review Source:I just adore this place... they are a cheese and wine bar in the heart of downtown Carlton (okay, Carlton is only a one-block downtown so everything is in the heart). They have a great selection of wines, and a nice little cheese menu with some artisan meats, and some other little goodies to satisfy the tummy while drinking all the great wines.
This past weekend, they had Doug and Joy from Anthony Dell wines pouring some of their wines... and they were wonderful - both personality-wise, and wine-wise. The staff there is very knowledgeable, and friendly, and there are a lot of other wine-folks lurking about that you can strike up conversations with.
The atmosphere is just fantastic, and the location is great for a little wine-drinking break from all the wine-tasting that you have to do... sometimes it's nice to take a little break from the running around, and be able to drink a full glass, and relax for a few, and this is the place to do it. I just wish that this place was a two-block walk from my house... wait, no I don't - I'd be there all the time spending money that I don't have!
