I LOVE the horseshoe Restaurant.  Super friendly owner & staff and delicious food.  I discovered this treasure on yelp (THANK YOU, Yelp!) and every time i have to make a trip to NC and pass South Hill,  i stop at the Horseshoe. If i'm with folks i tell them they're in for a real treat.  I'm ALWAYS glad i make the stop.  I get the fried green tomato sandwich - so yum!  On the return trip, this time,  we stopped in for dessert and OMG!  I had the Chocolate Chess pie. Delicious doesn't quite to it justice! It was so good i ordered an extra slice  to bring home to the hubby. I highly recommend it for gooey chocolate-y goodness.  Also tried a bite of the Chocolate Walnut pie which was also delicious, but i've found my fave with the Chocolate Chess. Â
So check out the Horseshoe Restaurant and be sure to leave room for dessert (or plan to take a slice to go)!
Friendly staff. Stellar food. Love this place! Even my 2 year old son who never sits still in a restaurant behaves here.
I had the fried green tomato BLT. The sandwich is packed with lots of flavor and was a joy to eat. My husband ordered a bison burger which was fresh and delicious. Afterwards, we delighted ourselves with a slice of chocolate chess pie. It was divine!
We recently moved to the area and the Horseshoe exhibits all the friendliness of South Hill with the extra special bonus of serving exceptional food.
My husband and I recently stayed in South Hill while we were finishing our SCUBA certification and after a long day were looking for a local spot with good food. Â This is the kind of place that welcomes you from the second you walk in the door. Â In our case, before we walked in the door. Â It had just started to pour down rain so my husband dropped me at the door and one of the waitresses met me there to open it. Â My husband was wearing one of our restaurant's t-shirts and a man whom I'm assuming may be the owner immediately came by our table with one of their own shirts that said "Stay Calm and Have Some Pie." Â We started out with crab dip which was really good (coming from the beach I was a little skeptical). Â My husband had the fried catfish and I had some kind of turkey, bacon sandwich with a cranberry dijon. Â It was delicious. Â Everyone was very friendly and I'm so glad we chose to go a little out of our way. Â It was well worth it.
Review Source:LOVE this place! Â We found this place on yelp while driving through the area. And we couldn't be happier. Excellent food. Excellent service and atmosphere three in one combination. Â Fried Green tomatoes excellent. Clydesdale Burger and Danville burger both were excellent. Taking homemade pies to go home - even better! Â Even our six-year-old gives this place two thumbs up. What a gem for weary travelers or locals alike! Â Every time I think of this place it brings a smile to my face!
Review Source:This is exactly what I wanted to find. Great Food, Great Staff. Â Comfortable and relaxed and a lot of history behind it. Â A lot of attention is spent on local sourcing.
And home made pies!
Mind you this has a diner like feel. Fried Green tomatoes abound. Â Old south in tradition but experimental. Â it was a discover for me, as it is not the road i often travel thru South Hill, but it is on US 1 business in downtown. Â Well worth the few minutes diversion from the Highway 85 bustle. Â
I will now stop every time i go thru South Hill.. a great menu to still explore.
Made the mistake of stopping here after reading all the rave reviews. We sat at an unbussed booth and waited 15 minutes to be acknowledged which happened only when we asked for menus and the table cleaned.the waitress took our order and asked how we wanted our burgers cooked. We dont know why though, they came out well done anyway. ( we ordered med and med rare) She served the onion rings after about 20 min and then another 15 passed before the overlooked food came. We had to ask for silverware, napkins and condiments. The sweet potato fries were good! We had to remind her about our pie order at least twice.... But the chocolate walnut pie was amazing! Definitely recommend the dessert but that is all.We were there for one hour and fifteen minutes....most of it spent waiting.
Review Source:South Hill was, as I assume it is for a lot of people, a stop for a meal on a drive down I-85. We decided to venture off of the strip of chain and fast food places closest to the interstate and head into town for some authentic southern food, and really enjoyed the Horseshoe.
It has a diner feel, with very friendly waitstaff that is attentive. The decor features old pictures of the area, and an entire wall featuring an article on Machine Gun Kelly (not the famous one, but apparently another criminal named Kelly in the 30's) being arrested in the restaurant. Certainly an odd sight in a restaurant, but it added to experience of really being somewhere that was part of the history of the town.
The menu is a step up from diner food with southern features as well. We started with Fried Green Tomatoes and the Fried Pickles. Both came out of the kitchen seemingly from the frier, so be warned about eating too much too quickly, lest you burn your tongue. The fry was perfect, and the breading was delicious. The ranch dressing for dipping was flavorful and a good offset to the dill of the pickles.
My friend had soup and a grilled cheese and finished all of both rather quickly. A standard diner feature, but the tomato florentine soup was not something out of a bag or box.
I had a turkey club sandwich. The bread was tasty (always the start of a good sandwich) the turkey juicy, and the bacon crispy and delicious.
A most excellent slice of brown sugar pie finished the meal. It does take a little more driving into town compared to the plethora of fast food options and the Cracker Barrel, but for some honestly good food, this is the place.
For starters, I discovered this place while poking around in YELP while in the hotel. With the great majority of reviews being positive and detailed, we divided to give it a try. The place has been around for a while and the place is clean and the servers are very pleasant. Most of the diners seem to know each other and when the lady at the next table overheard that this was our first visit she politely offered some encouraging recommendations. The potato and bacon soup was great and we enjoyed the chicken salad and the club sandwiches. We wanted to try one of the dessert pies but just couldn't handle any more food.
Thanks to those of you who provided the helpful comments.
Talk about stumbling across a gem. This little diner is outstanding simply put. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the food is great. The quaint small town feel just adds the the whole mystique of this great simple diner.
It has served food since the 30s so it truly has the pedigree of an actual diner, not one built recently or converted from an older building. You feel it the minute you walk in from the horseshoe-shaped counter to the Formica tables and green booths. By the way, it's called the Horseshoe Restaurant because the building was originally a blacksmith shop in the 20s.
The food: you must get the fried pickles or the onion rings. I say or because the portion sizes are generous and can feed 4 people easily. Great breading on these apps. Most if not all of the meat comes from local farms. The burgers could be elk or bison. The Hamburger Steakburger dinner, which my colleague ate, is chopped steak shaped into a large burger smothered in gravy, onions and mushrooms. Think Salisbury Steak all grown up. She loved it. I had a very good turkey, bacon and Swiss on ciabatta bread. No complaints about anything.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot the HOMEMADE pies! Many flavors to choose from but the Brown Sugar pie is the specialty. I imagine you can't go wrong with any choice.
What a great find in this small town, not too far off the beaten path. A great place to meet my mom for lunch. Good food, interesting history, and great people owned/worked at the restaurant. Service will smiles all around. Â The food had that home cooked quality to it, and everything we had was really good. A nice mix of traditional American diner (but up a notch) food and some more contemporary options, for example a grilled chicken panini. Also love the chalkboard door listing the desserts and specials. Will definitely go again!
Review Source:About 6 months ago, we passed through South Hill late in the evening looking for somewhere to eat. We were tempted to stop at the Horseshoe, but when we arrived at about 8:30, the parking lot was empty and we realized they would be closing soon. On that trip, we moved on to another restaurant so we wouldn't delay the restaurant closing. Â However, on this trip we hit South Hill about two hours earlier. And, after the dinner experience we had, we're happy we made the trip off the interstate!
The Danville Street burger was topped with smoked Gouda, bacon, an onion ring, and BBQ sauce. The burger wasn't your typical diner burger. It was thick, juicy, and cooked to order. The fried green tomato BLT was exactly as expected based on the menu description. A nice layer of pimento cheese is added to the sandwich to give it that something special. We ordered both of our sandwiches with a side of fries. Chips are also an option and while our server didn't mention them, we saw sweet potato fries as a side on one plate.
Other things we saw that looked interesting appeared to be fried pickle spears and an insane burger with mashed potatoes on it and gravy covering the bun.
For dessert we split a piece of brown sugar pie. Tasty, but super sweet! We're glad we split a piece. Other pie options presented were lemon, chocolate walnut, and chess.
The next time we pass through South Hill at meal time, we'll be back to try some of their other dishes!
The Horseshoe is a great place/ The restaurant has been here longer than I've been alive but I just recently started to visit. I love their Bison and Elk burgers which are fairly prices and huge. The service is great, the employees make you feel at home and welcome. I'd eat at this place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I could.
Review Source:My daughter and I found this on our way home from South Hill. I knew they were closing soon, but they did know rush us. The owner had lived in RVa and decided to settle in a small -town. The food was great and it was worth the 1.9 mile drive off of 85. I enjoy finding local businesses and supporting them. Â
They are famous for their Brown Sugar Pie, however, they were sold out when we were there. We had to settle for Chocolate Pie. :) Yum!!
I have been to the Horseshoe restaurant several times and guess what? Â The main counter is shaped like a...horseshoe! Â But there is more to this place than just that gimmick. Â
It is a small, some may say quaint, historic restaurant with a diner-esq feel that serves good  sandwiches and burgers along with a limited entree selection.  All the food here is of excellent quality.  I have had their burgers and grilled chicken entree all of which have been tasty.  A lot of the dishes here lean toward the higher calorie side...but then you don't come to a place like this on a diet.  The service here has been friendly on all my visits and the pricing reasonable.  Unfortunately for me, none of the dishes have ever really stood out but I do enjoy coming here at least once a trip.
Oh, "Machine Gun Kelly" was arrested here on New Year's Eve in 1938...which makes this place cool with that fact alone.
