Went for an adult afternoon of wine. Very good wine selection but again a poor RGV service review. Sat at table, very comfortable chairs and WAITED for service and only 2 other tables in the place, so sad. Another waiter finally arrived to tell us it might be a while until our waiter was available, REALLY?  I suggested he take our wine order and he did. Our 22 yr old son wanted to have the Soup de Jour and the waiter actually apologized and said it was carrot purée. The wine was good but small portions for a place that is new and the service wasn't rude just bad. Too bad!
Review Source:After reading glowing reviews of House.Wine, my wife and I tried it and enjoyed a FABULOUS DINNER. Â Our duck and brie (listed as appetizer, but my wife selected as entree) were the best we have eaten and the Yahweh (sp?) salads were delicious as well. Â The Happy Hour house merlot ($4 a glass) from a small Napa Valley vineyard was quite good and we chose affordable French wines .. a beujolais (sp?) and a bordeaux... with our entrees. The service was excellent and the atmosphere comfortable, with very nice live guitar music. House Wine is now on our short list of excellent McAllen restaurants. (We live in Harlingen 30 miles away.) The tab was a bit steep for the Valley but worth it ... $108 including five glasses of wine and a tip. (Visited February 2013)
Review Source:Nice little restaurant, relaxing atmosphere and beautiful decorations. But the food was really disappointing. I ordered the smoked salmon fettucini. Â The pasta tasted like it had been cooked much earlier, too many capers overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the salmon. Very litttle spinach was served to balance the dish. Â The flat bread was small and too salty. The service was not very good. I did not enjoy this dish.
Review Source:The only reason this isn't a five star review is the glare from the windows at lunch and the noise level at night.... But that is all worth it for the amazing food with selections you just can't find anywhere else, lovely, attentive service and great wine selection. All in a modern downtown atmosphere. Â One of my all time favorites.
Review Source:For a semi up-scale place in McAllen, this is a pretty good joint. The food is ok, though some of the pricier stuff doesn't live up to it's potential. The risotto i had was pretty good, and the mussels  were delicious, but the Ahi tuna was over salted and the escargot was bland.
The vibe is nice yet trying. A bit high class but can come off as tacky with "upscale" looking fake leather and wood, they do a better job than most other place i've been to in the Valley though, and that's saying something.
Definitely the best restaurant in the Valley these days. Â As a full confession, I graduated with Larry from EHS and have known him for a while, so would be biased if it was not so easy to like their efforts here in the RGV. Â He cut his teeth in Austin with the Carraba's restaurants and returned home to much fanfare. Â My parents eat there all the time as does my brother, but it is now my third ritualistic meal after Ms. G's and before Costa Messa. Â
The Flatbreads are as good as any thin crust offerings to the north and the Gulf Shrimp would make Emeril jealous, BAM!
Amazing place. It's super versatile-- perfect for a romantic (but not stuffy) date night or for a drink with friends. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff is so friendly and helpful! The owner, Jessica, came by to check on us (and all the other tables) frequently and she was so lovely! Â We also got seated at a table that was kind of isolated from most of the others because it was so busy when we came in, but the host offered to move us once some tables cleared up. Â We declined, but we really liked that they didn't just seat us there and forget about us. Â The food doesn't come out super quickly (and I don't think that's just because of where we were seated) but they come by frequently to check on you/bring drinks, and it didn't bother us at all because this is the kind of place you actually want to be in for a while.
My fiance and I ordered the Garlic Lime Shrimp as an appetizer, but honestly, it's so good that next time I might get it as my entree. We also ordered the spinach and chicken flatbread (for him) and the four cheese flatbread (for me). Â Both were outstanding! Â And the wine, of course was great. Â We just had the house brand of Chardonnay and were impressed by how good it was! Maybe next time we'll splurge for something fancier.
My only complaint is that House. Wine. came up on the Yelp late night list and when we came here on Friday at around 11:30, the kitchen had already closed. Â We had to go elsewhere to eat that night but decided to come back the very next night because the place's ambiance made such an impression on us. Â We weren't disappointed at all!
I like House Wine a lot but our most recent visit left a lot to be desired. The service was very confused, we had two different servers helping us and some things we ordered weren't placed and we had to remind the server about them. There was also a wrong entree brought out so one person in our party had to sit and watch the others eat for awhile. Drinks we didn't order were brought to our table, other table's drinks were brought to us...I'm a pretty easy going person but even I was getting annoyed after awhile. The food itself is good although I suggest lightening up on the garlic. If you can still taste garlic in your mouth the next day, that's usually a sign of a garlic overdose, yuck. I used to love their pesto but the overwhelming garlic taste, at least on the night of our visit, ruined the overall flavor.
Review Source:I was there last month. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of the food/service. Who would have ever imagined that you could get this type of quality on McAllen ?
I had the mussels and a great salad followed by the cheesecake with the balsamic reduction. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town.
Let me just start by saying I don't normally leave reviews. House Wine made an impression on me. My husband was in McAllen on business, and our 2.5 year old daughter and I visited him. We chose House Wine to celebrate our 8 year wedding anniversary and we weren't let down. From the friendly, sincere host that met us at the door, to the knowledgeable waiter, House Wine welcomed us. I was overjoyed by their wine selection and the service. I enjoyed a glass of champagne and chardonnay as well as the putanesca. The putanesca was a wonderful risotto dish with robust flavor. I couldn't stop eating it. My husband got the lamb and it was by far the best grilled lamb we've ever had the pleasure of tasting. To finish we all enjoyed the creme brulee. It had perfect flavor, texture and sugar. Yummy! The best part of our evening was the owner. He personally visited our table, not once, but twice. He welcomed us to McAllen and we couldn't be happier with the experience. House Wine is a wonderful place to enjoy wine and food.
The only thing I would say I was unhappy about is that they didn't have a booster seat for my daughter. I understand that restaurants like this may not accommodate to young children, but our daughter is accustomed to fine dining. It's a little troublesome that she had to use my purse as a booster. Other than that, it was a wonderful evening.
I liked this place immediately. Not just because it stood out in the neighborhood it is nestled in, but because as soon as you walk in you know that you're a relaxing atmosphere--with low lighting glistening off stem-less wine glasses on warm wooden tables.
Servers are extremely helpful with their suggestions and we happened to go on a night when happy hour was observed most of the night on their house wine--I tried the chardonnay, which was buttery and light, but not at all dry.
It complemented my entrée-- puttenesca risotto--creamy, buttery risotto topped with a mixture of salty capers, tomatoes, olives, and topped with a piece of grilled salmon. Yum!
I also had to have a taste of the crème brulee--my favorite dessert--creamy and wonderful.
Stop in and have a great dinner.
We went just for drinks, but I keep hearing about how good the food is, must try. Â We sat on couches which were a bit uncomfortable but we were able to enjoy the musician and sit and talk. Â The peach bellini was really good although not much alcohol in it. Â The greeter was friendly. Â Please don't bring your kids/babies here in the evening, it just ruins it for everyone!
Review Source:Great place to drink wine and relax with friends. The wine selection is great. The atmosphere is great. The food selection is great.
The line to get seated not so great
But hey, that's why there's a line in the first place. Its because its a good place to be in.

Location, awesome. Wine and beer selection, again, awesome. Food is slightly overpriced with not many creative vegetarian options. I ordered a house salad and a cocktail and ended up paying $12 plus tip to an understaffed wait crew. Tha'ts just to much to spend on a weekday and at four in the afternoon.
What really made me say, "What the?" was their decorative water bottles filled with McAllen tap water. That was gnarly and deceiving. Good water filters start at $140 and can treat up to 500 gallons per cartridge. Replacement cartridges are just under $50. Restaurants in the valley seem to frequently overlook good water treatment.
I might go back, but probably only with a group that has their heart set on it and not for food, maybe just for drinks. I won't seek it out again our steer a party to go over. The whole tap water thing is a real deal breaker for me.
I don't live in McAllen anymore-thank god ;) - but every time I visit (which is about 2X a year) I come here. This place has an awesome wine selection. There is a wonderful rose wine that at $11 a glass is worth EVERY penny.
The atmosphere here is beautiful, too. The lighting and furnishing creates a wonderfully warm atmosphere. It makes for a perfect  place to have a nice conversation with friends. I find it neat the furnishings are for sale, too.
Despite the upscale setting, the place is very welcoming. I've seen people looking their best as well as people looking uber casual  (myself included haha ) and the service is great and warm for absolutely everybody. No pretentions. Love that. It is one of the many things that keep me coming back to House. Wine.
I will be going back to McAllen in a couple of weeks and look forward to another great visit to House. Wine. I'll definitely try their food, too.
Got married in the valley and had our rehearsal dinner at House Wine. Â Excellent food and service. Â The atmosphere is great too. Â The owner is usually there walking around making sure everything is too your liking. Â I've been back 4 times to McAllen and always have to eat at House Wine. Â Make a reservation or you'll be sorry.
Review Source:Oh how I LOVE House Wine! Â Whenever I go home to visit I insist on eating here. Â The atmosphere in this place is so chic. Â I almost forgot I was in McAllen. Â I had my rehearsal dinner here and the owner Jessica made sure it was perfect for us. Â The staff have gotten a lot better too...the service now is top notch. Â If you go late, it will be packed and if it's packed it's extremely noisy.
The wine selection is amazing. Â Unlike any other place I've been to you can order a glass from ANY of their bottles. For appetizers be sure to try the brie & the ahi tuna. Â The chicken spinach flat bread is another great choice. Â Linguine asiago & the butternut squash rissotto are my all time favorite entrees. Â Be sure to save room for the cheesecake, and order it with extra sauce. Â It's such a simple dessert, but can't be missed.
Oh mah gawd the food here is good! Having seen the photos on "the line," I was surprised at how large this restaurant cum wine bar is. Also how GD loud. So we sat at a large table first and as the late great Sinatra blasted out of the speakers, chose instead to move to a table further away from said noise makers.
We started with the house Merlot (or merrr-lot as my dad says) and some sausage stuffed mushrooms. Happy caps of delight -- overfilled, hot, served with a spicy marinara and so big you had to cut them in half to share. Then we all got the Asiago linguine and shared a proscuitto pizza and lime shrimp. Jaysus -- it was all so rich! We had three doggie bags to go by the time we were finished, or not, as the case may be.
A really pleasant experience -- and one that certainly enhances the Valley's dining options. But for the love of eardrums, turn down the music sonny. And get off my lawn!
I haven't been out to eat in new places in the valley for a long time so I was excited to try this place out when i went home...you walk in and it's chic with warm inviting colors and a friendly staff. Â The place looks nice but I still walked in with running shoes. haha. Anyways we got the shrimp prossuito appetitizer which was tasty and a big portion. Â Disappointed with the mix plate: the meats were good but the cheese portions were small and the hummus and other dip weren't that good. Â While my friends' rissoto plates were creamy and full of flavor I felt like my white bean flatbread was bland. Â The toppings were salty and flavorful but the flatbread itself was cut/made way too thick! Â The white bean paste was also dried. Â My ahi tuna though was well seasoned and tender. Â Although it wasn't the best dining I've had, for the valley I'm pretty impressed.
Review Source:This is a neat place, I would recommend it. Â I LOVED the atmosphere as well as the food & wine, however the food & wine are very overpriced. Â A bottle of wine that is $8 at the grocery store is $40-45 here, although I guess this is typical for wine bars. I would go back, as it is one of the few "cool" places in McAllen.
Review Source:In a place where wine bars are far between, House.Wine. is a breath of fresh air. It's like the superhero of wine bars- furniture story by day, wine bar by night.
The decor is beautiful; you can buy everything in the store. The wine selection is fairly broad and I love that they properly decant your wine. Prices are fair and incredibly reasonable when you bring along friends. The place is cozy and trendy. It's also a great escape from the terrifying scene on 17th Street. So, for a touch of class and place that you can actually HEAR what your company is saying, go to House.Wine.
Thanks Emily for your review! I live in Austin and travel for work so I took my fellow yelper's advice and visited this place because she said it reminded her of Austin she was right! Â It really was like home! The sangria was good and so was the veggie risotto with chicken. I really liked the atmosphere and will definitely come back when I am in the valley again!
Oh and Yelp staff please make this a bar/restaurant because its more that than a furniture store and the address may be wrong because 2 navigation systems took me to the wrong place,
