Hunan Garden

Hunan Garden, in Malverne,, is your average place. Nothing to write home about but the food is decent. It's a small place and what Nick H says is true as far as their decor and being cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Price-wise Hunan is also decent and they will customize an order for you somewhat. The delivery man, David, is the greatest guy in the world!! Just dealing with him is worth ordering from Hunan. He's a sweetheart! My family has been ordering from Hunan when they were owned by previous people to present. Give them a try and quite frankly,, they are not as "disgusting" as Alison claims. Are there better places? Yes, but Hunan isn't all that bad. She may be used to better and that's OK.

Disgusting. My chicken wasn't even made of chicken, my lo mein was slimy and flavorless, and my wonton soup was the color of urine. Some of the things we ordered were vaguely edible once sufficient amounts of hot sauce were poured on them.

Hunan Garden is a standard Chinese take-out place. The key word here is "take-out," because chances are you will not want to eat in the small, skeevy dining area, although I have many times and enjoyed every second of it. I don't know why exactly, but I really like Hunan Garden. I think it has a lot of spunk - it's sort of the Rocky Balboa of Chinese restaurants in the area, and I respect it for not trying to be something its not. It's not offering a formal dining experience with a koi fish tank or tranquil lighting, nor is it offering a cutting edge dining room with swanky decor and house music emanating from an expensive sound system, Hunan Garden simply offers regular, greasy, heartburn inducing Chinese food, and there is nothing wrong with that. In the winter this place will be freezing cold and you will see the cashier bundled up like he was traveling to Siberia, and in the summer the lone fan in the room blows enough hot air to lift a thousand balloons into the sky, and there is nothing wrong with that either. Once in a while, when placing an order for delivery, they do mess up the order and forget something, but you know what? I've ordered from some of the more expensive places in the area and they too have screwed up something. Either the delivery took way too long or they forgot my egg roll.

Take my advice - go to Hunan Garden, order a nice General Tso's combination plate for dinner, and save the Tums for dessert.
