Great for drinks with friends, outdoor seating, and some of the food is awesome.

Best bartender is Martha, personable, great drinks!!

The only complaint I have is at times they forget that not everyone speaks Spanish, and the music can become repetitive and annoying.

This place seems like a great spot to sit and drink and enjoy a nice summer night but the atmosphere was ruined by the multiple families dinning with little children on a Friday night at 10pm. At first we sat outside until the children sitting at the table next to us started blowing bubbles with a bubble gun they bought from a street vendor in front of the restaurant(which shouldn't be permitted)When we asked to move inside the waitress/hostess was annoyed by our request. However i was not about to eat my food with soap in it like the table next to ours was. The food was beyond bad, bland tasting and over cooked rubbery chicken. The mozzarella sticks tasted store bought and frozen as well as the mashed potatoes tasted out of a box I could make better food at home and I don't even cook.
I would consider going back for drinks only to be outside during a nice warm night. As long as no street vendors are around with bubble guns.

My favorite restaurant on the strip

The drinks are always delicious especially their Mojitos and flavored sangria. I never get disappointed with my dishes. They have the best wings! ( weird right?) I usually order the chicken Francese or the penne vodka shrimp.

The staff is very friendly, if you frequent the place they'll show you extra love

In the summertime it gets hectic especially the outdoor seating because there's always a bunch of nobodies that want to be noticed hogging up the tables instead of eating their meal and going on about their day.

I wish this place would have a brunch special.. And  tiramisu on the dessert menu

    I would give this place a 4.5.
I think they can do better with indoor seating arrangements. I know it's small and the space is tight, but they place table's in awkward locations (such as to close to the bar/or right by the entrance).

The food here is great, I can't complain.
If your looking for authentic Italian food, you don't come to a Dominican neighborhood for it, If that's your mind set you will be disappointed.
The chicken parmigiana is finger licking good, and my friend raved about the tilapia.
Be sure to try their champagne sangria!

-in the summer they offer out door seating.

Came here for the first time to have a late night dinner with a friend. She said their sangria pitchers were awesome so why not try it. Don't have much to say about the ambience, being that it is located on what i like to call "the strip" (im not sure if anyone else calls it this too). What used to be a deserted 3 block radius with maybe 2 restaurants and a park has now become the favorite late night weekend spot of Inwood residents with its sidewalks full of people and hooka smoke. So sitting outside here, all you get is the hustle and bustle of passing patrons. Which honestly, isn't so bad if you like people watching. So we ended up having a passion fruit mojito pitcher. i have to say, it was actually very good. The taste of the passion fruit wasnt too strong which i like and the alcohol wasn't over powering either. So i was satisfied. The first thing to catch my eye on the menu was the chicken marsala and the price didnt seem to bad. I had high expectations for this plate since every other place i have had it never failed me. Needless to say it was delicious. The chicken was super juicy and well cooked. The mushrooms weren't overpowering and they were very tender just how i like them and the marsala sauce, well I say just try it for yourself. The only thing i didnt like about this place was that it was over $100 for just one pitcher of mojito and some chicken and a pasta plate my friend had. I would definitely love to go again and see if my opinions change.

The minestrone, one of the cornerstones of Italian fare, was a clear broth with celery, zucchini, onions, and carrots, so I should've known that the rest of my meal was going to be an Olive Garden-like experience.

Seriously, if you're going to call yourself an Italian restaurant then at least consult an Italian cookbook before you make a dish.

Bruschetta is not pita bread with chopped mealy tomatoes and mozzarella and italian salad dressing.

The one-star is for our waitress. I don't know her name, but she tried her damnedest to be honest about the dishes and did so with a smile and a great attitude.

I live in the neighborhood and fell inlove with this place. Granted I only get the Penne Alla Vodka here... it has been one of the best versions I have ever had. My husband tries everything and has never had a problem. Sometimes they are under staffed; so it takes some time to get your check - but over all it's not bad, esp not for the price and area.

Let me begin by saying I'm a native New Yorker from Uptown Manhattan and should know better about the quality of service of MANY of the restaurants there but always go with an open mind.

First time at this restaurant to meet up with a few friends(all female) and grab a drink. They were there when I arrived and their choice of a sangria type mojito which was ehhh (I've had better).  They had earlier asked for a Hookah because aside from food and drinks this is OFFERED! Unfortunately, the waitress told them they weren't making any at the moment but  they would be first on the list when it started.

Fifteen minutes sitting with them, they asked for a check because they want to go somewhere else to do hookah...then another 10 minutes passed and OH MY BEJESUS ITS A HOOKAH...going to ANOTHER TABLE. After a moment of confusion, we called the waitress to offer a decent explanation...not so good of a job then it's decided to speak to the chauvinistic and sexist so called manager Joselo (ppl note this down) about this situation.

The intention was for a simple apology on the service and possibly mend the situation with a discount, things managers do to make a customer happy. He explains to the party(of Females) that the restaurant is for drinks and food, CONSTANTLY. I think to myself, then why are they passing around hookahs if it isn't part of the deal? Part of a service a customer would pay for? I decide to jump into the discussion (the way we Dominicans do best) and mention its my first time there and I'm extremely disappointed the way he's speaking to the girls (yes, again all female) He replied with "We don't need you as a customer". At this point, I'm ENRAGED a MANAGER of a restaurant would say such a thing to a SOBER CUSTOMER.

Ladies, if you want a Ladies Night Out...definitely NOT the PLACE to GO. The management of this restaurant is AWFUL and need to take courses on Customer Service.

If yelp offered letter grades...they would get a fat big F

I am not sure why the reviews here are so low. Every time that I have come, I have always had a great time. When it gets late the tables get moved a bit and people begin to dance...the food, yes. I always get the fettuccine alfredo, once without chicken and once with, i fell in love. The service can be very slow but I have found everything else to be quite good!

I absolutely love this place due to the fact it's one of the most decent places in the area. The dj is great, the music isn't too loud. The sangria was good once upon of time, but I recommend you stick to the passion fruit mojito. The fact that they offer hookah services is a plus. On a nice day do expect a wait especially for the outside seating.

The drinks were good. The food was not. But the sidewalk patio on a nice day is really the only reason to go. However, do expect a brunch crowd basically every time the patio is open.

Chicken marsala was pretty bland but their fried calamari was edible.
Also they have hookah pipes if you are into that.

Kind of a disappointment.  The sauce in my carbonara was watery. You can tell they didn't make it the way a carbonara is supposed to be made. Other than that the liquor selection was pretty weak.  Luckily they had a playoff game in the background otherwise I would've left right away.  I would try another Italian place before settling for this one.

could be better, but it has no space to grow....

The service is great and drink prices decent, music is good and bartender knows her stuff, but the place is a whole in the wall. So tight and the tables are next to the bathroom door...Nasty
Outdoor seating is decent and goes with the rest of the bars around the area.

PS: i didnt get to try their food, just the drinks.

    - The food is okay, you can probably get better Italian food in the Olive Garden
    - The drinks are okay, nothing compared to Papasito next door
    - The atmosphere is nice, especially in the summer and the outdoor seating

Went there with 3 people - got penne vodka and it was filling. Also tried the goat cheese salad which is so simple and good!  My friend got the margherita pizza which is pretty small, looks like a single size TV dinner pizza and strangely didn't have any basil on it.

Also I have to note -- cleanest bathroom I've ever been in, in Manhattan! Would go back but only if someone else was getting the check.

Having lived in the neighborhood for over 10 years, I saw things before Dyckman was considered a "restaurant row".  It is nice to have places to find good food and Il Sole is a staple for me.  Fried Calamari is usually quite good though the marinara sauce attached isn't anything to scream about.  My fav pasta is Penne Ala Vodka with Shrimp.  Nice creamy vodka sauce with jumbo shrimp!  They make excellent sangria (try the passion fruit version - it's great on a hot day!).

One complaint for me is that for delivery they don't accept credit cards.  They did originally but I am thinking they might have gotten bad ones a few times to stop.  I've asked repeatedly for them to begin taking again but not yet.  In response to other posts I've seen, they've always delivered what I ordered so no issues I've found.

Another strange thing that annoys me with all restaurants up here is they install TV's and typically play sports.  These aren't sports bars and the bar area is small and directly connected to the main seating area.  I don't approve of the TV's but see it as a general sign of our society today (always needing to be visually stimulated).  Ah well, Il Sole will continue to be a place for me.

I visited Il Sole about a week ago with a girlfriend.  We went on a Tuesday evening around 7pm as we were both in the mood to try some Uptown pasta.  There were only a few other people in the restaurant and we were greeted by a very pleasant and accommodating host/waiter.  We ordered a couple of appetizers that came out quickly, and enjoyed every last bite!  The waiter was attentive, polite and informative about the specials, menu, etc.

Our entrees were brought out and we were in heaven! We had the Chicken Parmigiana & the Lobster Ravioli.  Both dishes were served hot, fairly quickly and were delicious.  Our wine was great, the music wasn't too loud, the pricing was fair and I'd recommend this place for a nice date or a fun yet quiet evening with your girlies!  Thumbs up Il Sole! We will be back!

I don't tend to eat out much along the "restaurant row" of Dyckman Street west of Broadway and here's why: overpriced food, indifferent service, noisy patrons, and blaring music, while slapping on a veneer of chi-chi decor to be perceived as "upscale". This is the typical nice restaurant in the area.

Neighborhood scene-y, Il Sole is all of these qualities and more. It's Italian, but I don't think the chefs have a sense of what makes good Italian food. The quality of ingredients is quite bad (the garlic bread with cheese is pretty much defrosted Texas Toast) and the pastas are much too rich. The sangria is good, but you have to have good sangria to be competitive around here.

Most times when I've come here I've had to wait for several minutes just to get someone's attention to put my name down for a seat. This includes during the day when no one is there. Do want my business or would you rather chat with your friend the bartender?

Il Sole, I see your appeal. You can be fun. You have lovely sidewalk seating right across from the community garden. The drinks are good. But why so expensive? Why do you simply not give a crap about your patrons? Always, always, I practically have to grab the waitress to get her attention.

    In a word: feh.

I forgot that one of my first visits to this place was a nightmare because our waitress decided to take a 20 minute break AFTER we asked for the check and before she brought it to us!

But I continued to go and order delivery, and my previous review stands, except that delivery has become a drag. My last order was simple, just two entrees and garlic bread. I'd had a long conversation with the guy taking the order asking him what he recommended. I placed the order, he repeated it, and then he left one entree out completely! When I got my delivery sans 2 entrees I called and he couldn't even remember our long conversation. It had only been like 30 minutes! He apparently one put 1 entree on the order. It wasn't worth waiting for them to fix the mistake.

*sigh* another one bites the dust.

This place is such a nice and relax spot to have drinks, food and hookah. Ill Sole has really good Italian slash Dominican food. The prices are reasonable and the atmsophere is really nice. My boyfriend and I enjoy this spot. In the summer, they have outdoor seating.

I had been to Il Sole before, and remembered having a not-groundbreaking, but enjoyable meal.
This time however, it was the worst meal I have had in years.
    Nothing was good.
    Bread - dry.
    Calamari - rubbery.
Sauce for Calamari - canned tomato sauce.
I had remembered that I liked the penne ala vodka - nope.
    Wine - almost off.
As two hungry people that usually love food and are quite good at finding the positives we both wanted to just stop eating and start over somewhere else!

I felt like I was in a "Bloopers and Practical Jokes" moment (showing my age) and that at any moment someone would come out of the kitchen saying "Ah, We were just kidding, we know that isn't Italian food! THIS is Italian food!" and they would bring us something that actually looked like a meal an Italian (or anyone else) would eat.

Yes, it was so tasteless and un-enjoyable that even though this spot was one of my first food experiences when I moved in a few years ago, and I liked it enough to go back more than once .... I am giving this as many thumbs down as I can!
Shape up or ship out Il Sole.
    Dyckman St. Property is valuable.
THAT is NOT Italian food, or food in any language, it is flavorless tomato sauce covered pasta.

I have been here a number of times and it is the go-to place for Italian food in the neighborhood.  I could probably comment on much of the menu here.

The mozzarella caprese is excellent.  The combination of basil, tomato, thick balsamic, and red pepper is perfect.  Pretty tough to mess a dish like this up, but I typically find the addition of roasted red pepper to be nontraditional and very tasty.

As another review mentioned, the fried calamari can use some work and are very very small.

The bruschetta, as it's named on the menu, is almost more of a bruschetta salad and is quite massive compared to your typical bruschetta dish at an Italian restaurant.  Again, the combination of tomato and mozzarella bits is quite difficult to screw up.

The mussels in white wine or marinara are excellent and taste fresh.  I've never had to chew my way and tire out my jaw through the entire dish.

The two best pasta dishes are the linguine in pesto sauce and mixed seafood linguine.  The pesto sauce is excellent and I will imagine it will be tough for you to make better at home (we tried).  The seafood linguine, while the calamari and scallops are quite small, work very well in a pasta dish like this and the mussels and clams are also very good.

The pizza here is great too and they spent a lot of time and care in its preparation.  It tasted crisp, fresh, and homemade.

If you want to get really full and satisfied, try the baked ziti.  Although it isn't anything too special, it is massive and a great meal to take to work the next day.

The service is extremely friendly, and will usually accommodate any special requests.

The calamari was rubbery and small pieces, the chicken Marsala was nothing special and the mash potatoes were bland an instant. They need to get better cooks. I will not eat there ever

This was one of the first overly styled places to open up in Inwood iirc.  But the chintzy factor did not deter me and I went in there anyway.  The wait staff was nice and very attentive but unfortunately they were tending to drab plates of food.

The bread was pretty sad and the dishes were bland.  I got a bolognese plate and the texture of the meat was strange so I asked the waiter what type of meat was used.  He said he would check with the chef and later came out with a plastic package of sausage so I could read the ingredients on the label.  ??!!??  Maybe it was a language issue...dunno what else to make of it.

Drinks weren't bad and the prices weren't horribly over the top but still I can't see myself going there again.

The people  here are very friendly, and I want to like this place...  Unfortunately, the food is just not good at all!  (Quite like Covo), the food is exactly like very other mediocre Italian place in the City.  Sauces that taste exactly--EXACTLY--like everyone elses (um, can you say CAN?).  And a  menu exactly the same, too.  It is VERY clear this place was opened by someone who really wanted to open a restuarant, but who is certianly not a chef.  In fact, it seems there is no real chef at the helm, just some line cooks who don't know real cooking, either.  Too bad...

I really enjoy this restaurant, but I live in the neighborhood so it's a short walk for me. I'm not sure I would travel to Inwood specifically to eat here, but the neighborhood has plenty to offer and if you're around, this is where you should go.

I have to agree with the others who have said the portions are massive - I have actually turned 1 serving into 3 meals. I've tried a few different pasta and chicken dishes and have enjoyed them all, although they can be a bit salty. I'm a big fan of salt, so that's a plus for me.

I agree that mixed drinks and sangria may not be the best way to go, bit I've had a an excellent bottle of wine and would recommend going that route if you'd like a drink with the meal.

The brunch portions weren't as large, but it's a decent meal. I'd say the menu is pretty typical - eggs, fench toast, etc.

Service isn't really a make it or break it deal for me, I care much more about how the food tasts. I've never had any complaints here though.

Came here after an evening performance of Dracula in Inwood Park. (I could have gotten the name of the park wrong...this part of town is definitely NOT my expertise). In any case, we just wanted a bit of food and a drink. I had their sangria, which I would give a 5.5/10. Just OK, felt a little weak. For food, I got the pesto linguini. I was pleasantly surprised, actually! And it is HUGE, it comes out in a big bowl so make room in your fridge if you get this guy.

Generally it was good and I would suspect one of the hipper joints in the area, considering it's Inwood and all. But the neighborhood has grown up a lot since I was last there a couple of years ago...thinking places like this are making it happen...

Please be careful when ordering booze here. The food is averagely priced and so is the wine but the pitchers are INSANELY priced for weak,  ready mix crap. The sangria is watered down and there are no prices on the cocktail menu. We got stung bad. Should have gone downtown.

I held off on writing a review for this place because I had not been there in a while. But having gone last week, I have to say that I was a tad disappointed with the quality of the food. The service is still good, but the food has changed for the worse. The portions are smaller - which is usually a big mistake - and not as tasty. When this place opened, the portions were generous and the food tasted fresher. Now, the portions are smaller, the prices are the same, and I feel as if the quality has dipped. I hope that they reconsider these changes, because they are the only Italian eatery in the neighborhood and it is a shame that they should be associated with mediocre food.

Four years ago I LOVED Il Sole. Now the prices are higher, the portions smaller, and the food is worse. Every once in a while I get a craving for pasta and it makes me very sad that I can no longer assuage that craving in the neighborhood.

Wow!  Is everyone kidding?  I ordered food from there with my boyfriend and his dad on 1/31/09 and each of our three dishes were not good (chicken parmesean, chicken marsala, and chicken fussili w/ artichokes).  The food was pretty bland and tasteless.  I had the chicken fussili or at least that is what I ordered, but the chicken chunks were so small I could not tell at first that chicken was even in there.  Big dissappointment as it would be nice to have a place to go in the neighborhood when you are tired of cooking for yourself.

had been thinking of going for a while, but nervous because there isnt much good italian in the neighborhood, saw the menu, and we thought this may be the place.... apps came, the clams were pretty solid, and thats where the good ended, the calamari tased frozen, there were no legs, which adds to the belief that it was frozen.  i had the seafood linguini, which tasted as though the sauce was off the shelf from the grocery store, my friend has the spaghetti and shrimp, and felt the same way about the sauce.  asked for some pesto on the side, it was just a bright green puree, you coundn't see the basil. it looked like something in a cartoon.   than asked for shots of patrone, and were given somethign along the lines of cuervo, but charged for patrone.  being in the spirits business we knew of the mistake and mentioned to the manager and she basically told us we were wrong, there is no way anyone in her restaurant could possibly make a mistake, so with that we left and will never return!!!!!

Generally solid food. Simple pastas, so-so apps, nothing too special. Best enjoyed in summer when the front doors open and people watching is best at the bar. If you live in the neighborhood it's a decent place but I wouldn't hike all the way uptown for it.
