As a recent  convert to Indian cuisine take my opinion with trepidation for the experienced or enthusiasm for those who've been missing out.
Built within an old Chinese buffet, India House style fits in comfortably into the old floor plan (with some East Asian motifs still filtering in) with a decent buffet and absurdly large dining area.
First experience was with the very affordable buffet. Selection was more than adequete and a never ending supply on complimentary Nan made it all the better. It is a buffet so adjust you expectations accordingly.
However, arriving for a made fresh dinner is a whole different ball game. Ordered the Kadai Chicken dinner; which was phenomenal. Not much else to stay but check this place out.
The people who say that the best ethnic food these days is in strip malls were right!
We found India House Restaurant on our way back to Chicago from Holland, MI. And I don't know about you, but after a weekend of the fine fare at the xmas parties of Holland, MI, we sure needed a refreshing change, and India House Restaurant fit the bill: we had spicy, diverse food that satisfied meat-eaters and a vegetarian. The buffet was fresh and well-stocked. I tried several preparations of chicken (ticka masala, tandori, and one in a chick-pea curry), as well as lamb (the meatballs were particularly good).
Looking around the restaurant it occurred to us that India House Restaurant had taken over a Chinese buffet, painted a wall orange, and called it a day. I spoke with our server and it turns out that this is exactly what had gone down. They'd been in Michigan City for just over a year.
Again: the food is excellent. Totally worth a trip if you are on the road, and if you live nearby try the non-buffet menu (which we didn't try).
Stopped by India House passing thru as I was going to Chicago. They are located in a strip mall on an inside corner.
The good:
The place looked very nice and the food presentation of the buffet was good. I was so looking forward to trying it after driving all morning. I was ready for a sumptuous lunch. They had about 10 different items including pakoras and vege samosas, tandoori chicken and various stewy dishes both vegetarian and with meat. I noticed lamb meatballs too.
The bad:
Too much seasoning!!! Too salty for my taste. Because of the saltiness everything tasted the same. Reminds me of a Thai restaurant I went to in Detroit where every  dish served was salty. Indian (or Thai) food is suppose to utilize the use of various spices to bring out the flavor of their food. But when they are salted too much all you taste is salt. In addition, I found the palak paneer (one of my favorites) too creamy which became harder to eat. The lamb meat balls did not taste like lamb at all. Lamb has a distinct taste.
It is such a shame. The place is nice and the service was good. I would have given them 5 stars but there is no excuse for salty food. I would go back there if I am in the area but not until they do what is right.
I've been coming here since they opened just over a year ago. No matter if it's the huge buffet or dinner - the food is AMAZING! Â I'm never disappointed. The buffet is a great way to experience a wide variety of foods. Their Chili Chicken was new to me, but is a favorite. Chicken Tika Masala is excellent as are the Navrattan Shahi Korma, veggie balls and the Galub Jaman is not to be missed. Enjoy! Â Prices are fair (buffet $8.99 ea) and service is very attentive.
Review Source:My wife and I were happy to find a good Indian restaurant closer to home. We've been here for both the lunch buffet and for dinner. The buffet has an excellent variety of dishes. I have yet to be displeased with anything I've yet tried. The dishes I've had for dinner are even better than the buffet. My wife and I have quickly become regulars here.
Review Source:The lunch buffet is pretty good. Â Flavors are a bit muted, but that's to be expected when trying to please the masses. Â I love the fact that the naan is made to order - always hot and fresh! Â I've been in twice and both times have been consistently good. Â Â I've never been in for dinner, but I was told by my waiter that that was when the spices are kicked up a notch.
Overall, I'd recommend India House when you're in MC and not in the mood for the same old, same old.
Going to an Indian restaurant is not the same as having home made indian food. On our way back home (Chicago) from Warren Dunes we looked up at this restaurant with good ratings on yelp.
We decided to give it a short after a long tiring day, service was not the best since there was only one person taking care of 5-6 tables.
The food was as good as it gets, not oil dripping typical indian food, just felt like a home cooked meal.
They catered us to our spice level and the roti's and naans were absolutely amazing.
Highly recommend this restaurant. Totally worth for the price
Tucked in the back corner of a strip mall that used to be anchored by Wal-Mart, but is now the home of Big "R", is a large space that housed a succession of Chinese Buffet restaurants. Â India House is a relatively new addition to the Michigan City cuisine, and is excellent. Â We first tried the buffet for lunch (no buffet for dinner) to see how authentic and tasty the basics were.... We were happy to discover that this is the real thing.
We came back a week or so later for dinner and tried the Paneer Pakora appetizer which was a deliciously mild battered cheese finger food that was only $3.
We had a remarkable chicken curry dish (ordered India Hot), lamb Madrasi (a spicy, incredibly delicious dish), and chicken Tikka Masala that had a great tomato cream sauce as good as anywhere we have had Indian food (and that includes London, UK).
We had the tandoori Roti, a whole wheat naan with a spicy sauce and a delicious mango chutney. Â This is a rare jewel of a restaurant in an area not known for its culinary excellence.
Kudos to India House for staying strong in the region despite such a lackluster palate from Hoosiers. My girlfriend and I splurged for around $40. Such a good deal when I compare prices from Chicago to M.C. I had the lamb vindaloo which was good, but wasn't as good as places in the city. Much too sweet. However, my girlfriend had a curry that I enjoyed much more than my vindaloo. We also had some garlic naan with riata that was enjoyable. Once again, not as good as the city but terrific for the region. Will be back again and again. Also, extremely happy they serve beer.
Review Source:Yay for an Indian restaurant in Michigan City/La Porte County!  We'll take it!  Whoever included the Taj  (Chesterton) in their review--it's g-o-h-n gone.  Too bad, the food was fantastic.  India House?  Great choices, all the good, familiar favorites, very quick service for take-away and nice people  My only criticism?  SALTY--not in price, but in spice.Beggars can't be choosers I suppose.  They could leave the salt out and it would be really delicious.
Review Source:India House appears to be in a slightly renovated space that used to be a Chinese buffet. Despite the strange decor, our dining experience was great. Service was very prompt, and we enjoyed delicious Indian food.
I especially liked the naan here. It's a bit crispier than other Indian restaurants. As far as entrees, I usually order vegetarian at Indian restaurants, because I find the meats are often overcooked. But not so at India House. I gave their extensive lamb menu a chance and was delighted with perfectly cooked meat.
And you can't beat the price. We splurged and ordered lots of food for under $40.
Love this place!!!!!! It has a strange location but I'm sure glad I checked it out. The food was fresh, hot, and super good! The staff was attentive and the place was clean...really an awesome place to go any night. It is so hard for ethnic places to survive and thrive in Michigan City...but lets make this place last because its amazing...and I eat Indian all the time...it's a real gem.
Review Source:The other reviewers here are spot on. Â Michigan City has enough fast food joints and chain eateries to tire even the biggest mall rat. Â The addition of India House is a welcome change from that scene and delivers big flavor and great service. Â
Vestiges of restaurants past greet you at the door. Â Don't be afraid! Â There is great cuisine past the old coffeehouse wallpaper at the entrance, and glass koi/dragon dividers. Â They run an affordable lunch buffet, but we were here for dinner, which had an extensive menu full of appetizers, lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes, briyani (think Indian fried rice), and in a few days when their liquor license comes through, beer and wine.
Some of the dishes came out differently than I expected-- the saag paneer was creamier looking than I've had before, and the chicken vindaloo had a darker red color than the light orange color I know from previous dinners.  The taste, however, could stand up to a Devon Ave Chicago Indian restaurant.  The sauces were spicy and the meat was fork tender.  The rice did not come in  fluffy separated grains, but again, taste was excellent.  The garlic naan was a stand-out for me because they didn't skimp on garlic and salt like others places do, and it was appropriately crispy on one side and soft on the other.  It all came out lighting fast too!
We had a samosa appetizer, two entrees (that come with rice), briyani, and a side of naan for $40. Â
We will definitely be back!
We have Taj in Chesterton, and it's pretty good. Â They have a buffet, but it's only during the lunch time on weekends. Â The selection there on the buffet is a bit limited. Â THIS PLACE, though...I really enjoy the flavors in everything, and you have a lot of vegetarian choices as well. Â I've been to only one other Indian buffet, and that was in Kitchener, Ontario, and I don't really want to talk about it.
We might hit this place for lunch once per month, since it's in the town we work. Â Two kinds of rice, the one with spices and veggies (is that saffron?) and plain rice. Â They have a crackery naan, a regular naan, and a fried naan. Â They have something that looks like Saag Paneer and a chickpea dish that reminds me of chole masala. Â I like mixing these two together with rice and the flavor is AMAZING.
Good chicken dishes as well, and the green chutney is awesome. Â Solid service, and I always get my money's worth at $8.95.
Solid Indian joint with above average offerings at the buffet.  It is much cleaner and more friendly than Indian restaurants I've been to in South Bend.  It is on par with Chicago Indian buffets.  They kept a good rotation on the items in the buffet and had a bigger selection than most restaurants you'll find in smaller towns.  I hope they continue to server up great, fresh  Indian food in a clean and friendly environment.  I'll be back...
Review Source:My husband and I loved Taj in Chesterton, so when I heard of a new Indian restaurant in the area I had to try it! Â I love that it is a buffet...very dangerous if counting calories! Â I tried India House last week and cannot wait to go back. Â The restaurant was very clean and organized. Â Service was prompt. Â I cannot speak for the meat dishes because I am a vegetarian. Â There were several things to chose from both with and without meat. Â I wanted more of everything I tried. Â The buffet was very complete including: Â naan, fried naan, mint chutney, tamarind chutney, mango pudding, rice pudding, Gulab Jamun, rice, curried potatoes w/carrots, creamed spinach, vegetables in a rich cream gravy, curried chick peas, etc. Â If you want a low fat meal, look elsewhere. Â If you're looking for decadent Indian food at a great price (lunch was around $10 per person) Â then India House is definitely worth a try!
Review Source:My partner and I have dubbed northwest Indiana the land of the most mediocre food on the planet. Seriously, it's pretty bleak out here. The opening of this new Indian restaurant is a bright spot in the dark (other bright spots: Sahara in Michigan City, Don Quijote in Valparaiso, Aladdin Pita in Merrillville, and Five Star Thai in Crown Point). So far, we've tried the chai, chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, papadum, mint chutney, pakora (cauliflower, mixed veg, Â paneer), tikka masala salad, vegetarian samosas, gulab jamun, mango pudding, kheer, garlic naan, plain naan, and sweet naan with raisins and coconut. The sauces are rich, creamy and full of flavor and they'll make them as spicy (or not) as you'd like. The chicken in both the korma and tikka masala is all white meat, which is aligned with my personal preference. The portions are sized right with enough to take home for leftovers. The service is attentive and we've never visited without receiving some sort of upgrade or complimentary item from the quirky and funny server (who I think may actually be an owner). My only critique would be that the kheer could use a bit more flavor--a few cardamom pods, dash of rose water, and a few almond slivers and it would be perfect. It's so nice to finally have Indian food in northwest Indiana that is consistently delicious and high quality. Don't let its tucked-away-in-a-desolate-strip-mall location dissuade you from trying it. They are open seven days a week for buffet ($8.95/person--DELICIOUS!) from 11-3 and their dinner service runs from 5-10pm every day as well.
Review Source:I literally JUST left this restaurant and couldn't wait to write a review. Our host and waiter was very accomodating. I think he may have been the owner, but unsure. The menu is very descriptive and the waiter was more than happy to answer any questions we had. If you've never eaten Indian food, I suggest you try it here. It is just as good as the places I've tried in Chicago.
We needed more naan and the waiter asked if we would like for him to surprise us with a special naan. We agreed and so glad we did! Â The bread (naan) had bits of almonds and garlic in it and was even better than the garlic naan we originally ordered.
They all were so hospitable. My boyfriend and I walked in close to closing and they treated us like family.
Overall, I will definitely be back soon! Â Maybe even for their lunch buffet!
