What a disappointment! This use to be one of my favorite restaurants and the service has gone down hill recently. They dripped wine in our food and forgot to order the dessert. To make it worse, when the cheesecake came out there was MOLD on it. I let waitress know and all she did was offer a different piece of cheesecake. No manager came over to apologize nor did they offer to take the dessert off the bill. What a horrible experience.
Review Source:A divine dining spot, for sure. Ambiance--very nice. Food--GREAT. Service--excellent. Â What's not to love?
Been here a handful of times and never disappointed. The filet is the best and I like that it is available in two "sizes".
Love the 'triple' as it gives you choices and makes it fun.
Oh yeah, we'll be back.
This place is Awesome... from the moment you walk in you are greeted with such nice gals to the end of your meal when your fabulous waiter hands you the tab!
All waiters here are great but JAYME M is by far the MOST fab!!! He is super friendly, nice and will do anything for you to make your experience grand!!!
Great service, great atmosphere, great prices for superb food! We have NEVER been disappointed!
I will say this is a place to relax and enjoy - It takes a good hour to an hour and a half to eat, it is NOT the fastest place - But I think this too makes this place by far the best!!!!
I went over last night for my birthday dinner.  That's right, they sent me an invite and my entree was free.  So I started off with crabcakes.  Apparently I've never had them there because they were scrumptious!  Two cakes separated on  the plate by small chunks of pinapple and surrounded by two different sauces.  For my main course I ordered another dish I hadn''t tried; a small filet pan roasted with poblano style spices.  This was served with roasted potatoes and mushrooms.  For dessert I had a piece of pecan pie.  A great meal!!
Review Source:Why the mixed reviews?! I enjoyed my meal here. Conveniently located right next to my hotel, and on top of that, GIlbert's has a deal where hotel residents get 20% off their entrees, I couldn't say no!
Free appetizer with Yelp check in, and ordered their special Cajun Filet Mignon done rare with a carafe of cabernet - yum yum yum. The Cajun Filet Mignon was interesting--not really spicy in the habanero kind of way, but more in richness in flavor. With a side of shitake mushroom and potatoes...I'd recommend it, if that's what you're really asking.
Ambiance: yes, it's for older folks. I felt I was the youngest by 20+ years. And yes, its rather romantic ambience made me wished my girlfriend was with me. But oh well, I was here on a business trip and made $2g that day. Can't complain. :)
All in all, I'd recommend. Killer happy hours too.
Went with a group of 12, service was excellent. Â We ordered before the normal dinner time, 5:30. Appetizers with crab cakes, called Maryland, I lived in Annapolis, MD for 6 years, these crab cakes were very good. Lump crab, just enough filler to keep the crab together. Chicken quesadillas were good, had a good spice.
Ordered the 6 oz. filet medium rare with scallops. The filet was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Â Nicely seared, good pink inside and tender as butter. Ordered mushrooms as a topper- excellent! Â The scallops were cooked perfectly, with a nice seasoning. Â Wow! Â Came with 2 sides, had green beans (fresh) with pecans and Caramelized onions, baked potato with sea salt on the skin. Â very good.
All of the dishes were served hot and at the same time. Â Very nice atmosphere. Planning on going back with my wife.
A great steakhouse that happens to do seafood quite well! Â We came here for a date night (our second time). Â
Ambiance: dimly lit romantic atmosphere with cushy leather benches and some "western cowboy" decor. Â If John Wayne were a mobster that conducted his business out of a restaurant
Service: Â I'm from Vegas, so my standards for service are quite high. Â J Gilberts certainly met my expectations. Â My drink was never empty, they stopped by just enough times to check on how we were doing, and we did not feel rushed between apps and entree
Food:
Warm sour dough bread brought to the table with regular butter and "pastrami butter". Â The pastrami butter is the seasonings from pastrami (no meat in it) giving it this smoky salty yummy flavor. Â
Seafood Durango $12 - 6 juicy shrimp covered in a tomato parsley salsa. Â Shrimp were tender, not overcooked or fishy. Â The secret is dipping the sauce with the bread. Â It's like having bruschetta with your shrimp. Â The server actually stopped by to pick the plate up, but saw all of the sauce we had left, and brought us fresh bread so we could enjoy the dish to its fullest potential.
Filet (4 oz) with Georges Bank Scallops ($29... $37 for a 6 oz filet) - filet cooked perfectly with a nice sear on top and tender pink center. Â The real surprise was the scallops, they were tender, and cooked to the second between raw and terribly chewy.
Truffle butter $3 - worth a try if you love the aroma of truffles
Drinks:
Impressive scotch menu. Â Beers on tap range from $4.5 - $6. Â Nice selection of both reds and whites. Â I had the Daughters Moscato $7/glass and it was delightful.
This place is great for getting drinks and small plates in the bar area during happy hour. I usually come here with my brother and his wife when we want to start the night out right.
If you check in on Yelp, they bring you chips covered in blue cheese for free! Their drinks are usually good. I like their mojito, but it's served in a double-old fashioned glass, and it's not too strong. Their margarita is better, and they have a lemon-basil Manhattan that's very good. For food, the filet and lobster tail is a great dish because it's just enough food at just the right price. The shrimp durango comes with a tomato-basil salsa (they should give you good grilled bread to sop up the extra sauce). Their onion rings are big slices of onion fried crisp, and they come with three good sauces for dipping: mustard-thyme, parmesan garlic and steak sauce.
Way overpriced and average food, service was poor. Â Four of us went here for New Year's Eve dinner, first time there. Â All started out good, the calamari was very good. Â The salad was boring. Â I had the filet combo. Â The filet mignon was bland and tiny. Â The scallops were very small and only 3 were served, wow. Â I can't believe the small amount of food in front of me was a 40 dollar plate. Â Another friend had the grouper, it was okay, a little fishy. Â The server did not bring us any bread, in fact we didn't even get any until another server asked if we needed "more." Â The sourdough bread was very strong, tasted sort of like dirty socks to be honest. The server was friendly at first, then not so attentive and even forgetful, and finally, very slowwww. Â Finished eating, then around 45 mins later finally able to leave... due to waiting forever for her to bring the check, run the cards, etc. Â On the way out the ladies at the hostess station did not even speak to the four of us, nor did they offer us what everyone else was given: a coupon for our next visit (no worries) with a cute cookie cutter attached. Â Needless to say this will be our first and last visit. Â Should have gone to J. Alexander's instead.
Review Source:Excellent service from the bartender.
I asked about the price of a non-alcoholic lime mojito and the bartender gave it to me for free-- maybe he assumed I was a broke student on a tight budget given how close the location is to OSU.
So sweet of him. I am happy to pay but I hate paying the same price as the alcohol-containing version so I always like to know the price ahead of time to avoid the sticker shock. It was sweet of him to make it on the house.
I am sad that I don't remember his name but he was an older gentleman. I wish him and his family the best :)
Will definitely visit this place again when I go back to Columbus.
We were driving through Columbus and needed a place to stop for dinner. Â I read the Yelp reviews of steakhouses in the area and were attracted here. Â Making a reservation on Open Table is always a plus. Â Location is a bit hard to find in an office building. Â Once inside, nice ambiance. Â Accessible seating. Â Booths, tables and private dining rooms. Â Nice menu with steak, seafood and even vegetarian items. Â Most meat items are priced with sides. Â Also has a price fixe menu that has popular items and will at worst give you a nice dessert to take home. Â Wine list is fairly large and diverse. Â Our server was pleasant and attentive. Â Salads were appropriately sized, and the crab bisque was flavorful. Â Appetizers were interesting and nice sized. Â Steaks were prepared to order. Â Seafood was well prepared as well. Â Portion size was appropriate to price. Â None of us could clean our plates. Â Don't expect to rush through a meal here, but I wouldn't expect that to be the case. Â Overall, I really like this place. Â Not ostentatious, not intimidating. Â Just a well balanced upscale steak house. Â Will make this a future stop in trips to Columbus.
Review Source:Great food made even better with amazing service from Donny (I'm sorry if I spelled your name wrong!).
Food: The calamari and wedge salad were delicious and well-portioned between two people. Â I had the scallops with mushroom risotto instead of the lobster risotto. Â My boyfriend had the half rack of lamb. Â Both dishes were incredibly delicious. Â The scallops were tender and not overly-drenched in butter, which I loved. Â The dish came with 6 scallops which I appreciated because most restaurants will only give 3-4 for the same price. Â The lamb was cooked exactly as my boyfriend ordered it: rare. The flavor and quality of the lamb was also very excellent.
Drinks: Best manhattan I've ever had! Â They did not skimp on the alcohol but it was still made well enough that I didn't feel like I was swallowing down pure ethanol. Â Yum!
Service: Hands down, the best service I've ever had in Ohio. Â Donny was attentive and very personable. Â I almost wanted him to sit down with us and have dinner! Â When he learned that I was dabbling in bourbon as my choice alcohol, he offered small glasses of the Woodland Reserve and the Jefferson Reserve to me and my boyfriend to taste and compare. Â He did this all on his own and at no charge to us. Â This level of attention elevated what could have been just a nice dinner to an amazing one. Â
Bottom line: Expect to see us here on a regular basis.
Wow! What the heck happened since we were last here???? Â The bread was only some sourdough no pretzel. Â The prix fix menu was the absolute same, nothing new there, same wine list (but that isn't necessarily a bad thing) but what made it go down the tubes? The overall experience was decidedly lacking for the price paid!!!
The food itself was good but nothing that made either of us sit up and take notice. Â Tender steaks - yes. Â Flavorful steaks - not really. Â The lobster mac and cheese was good as was the mushroom risotto. Â So where did they tank? The service!!!!! Â Horrid.
It wasn't crowded so there is no excuse there. Â The service we received was poor, very poor. Â We had to wait and wait and then wait some more too many times. Â Had to wait for drink refill, had to wait for steak sauce. Â The servers team member brought us our food and then when hubs asked for the sauce the guy never brought it. Â When the server showed up again she says to us "Oh, I didn't realize they had brought out your food? WTH??
Most of our dinner involved waiting for the server to show up (we didn't even see her walk past to any other tables to call her over even) and when we were raring to get out of there we had to - you got it - wait for the server to show up and handle the check. Â
What we paid and the dining experience did not match - not at all. Â We left not happy and not in any hurry to return.
J Gilbert's has been our favorite "nicer" steakhouse/restaurante in Columbus for over 10 years and it has never let us down. Â They have a great promotion if you sign-up for their email notifications they will send you a birthday discount each year. Â
The Maytag blue cheese potato chips are a must have appetizer. Â We went most recently as a family for my birthday. Â They usually have a Prix-Fixe menu, where you can link a selected main course with a salad and a dessert. Â I had the Wedge Salad with the Petite Filet & Scallops and creme brulee. Â The salad came with a chilled plate and fork and had just the right amount dressing and Maytag blue cheese. Â The filet and scallops were cooked to perfection and came with grilled asparagus and yukon smashed potatoes. Â My wife had the filet and crab cake combo. Â The crab cake was one of the best we've had outside of the east coast. Â
The restaurant also has a kids menu which contains delicious chicken tenderloins, grilled chicken a petite filet, salmon & beef sliders. Â Our kids have always loved their food. Â
One of the best features of J Gilberts is the wait staff. Â They have always been top notch & friendly. Â They go out of their way to make your meal the best. Â
Lastly the wine menu is very extensive and contains options from bottles, carafes, glasses and also tasting flights. Â Also tried an excellent chocolate martini's....A+.
J Gilbert's has consistently been my favorite steakhouse.
Maytag chips, love them love them love them.
My favorite is the filet, always comes out with a very creamy texture and flavorful. I order it every time and have yet to be let down.
This last visit I was very disappointed to find out that they had discontinued service of their fries which were basically a large potato cut in quarters. Tried the asparagus and it was decent but didn't quite replace what I loved about the fries.
I've found myself going to Hyde Park instead of J. Gilbert's now that I don't have a side I absolutely love.
A first visit and certainly not the last
Our experience was exceptional. Â The atmosphere was casually elegant -- condusive to good conversation. The food was cooked to perfection and served piping hot - Ribeye, Strip Steak and halibut. Â All with great flavor and presentation. Side of mac and cheese with lobster was delicious - the Ceasar's salad was good, but dressing could have been improved - anchovies wonderful.
The service was the best - our server was pleasant, attentive and helpful, but not overbearing.
Loved it! Â Will definitely be back!
2.5 stars. Â Dinner was just okay. Â We ordered the shrimp app which was really good and for dinner the filet and KC strip. Â They use mesquite wood chips when cooking the steaks and I really didn't care too much for the flavor, tasted like a campfire. Â The scallops were good that came with the steak. Â Service was excellent but overall I would probably not come back. Â I would rather pay a little more and get a steak at Eddie Merlot's or Hyde Park.
Review Source:Pleasantly surprised by this place, as I had low expectations given that it's located at the bottom of an office building in a commercial area of Worthington. Nonetheless, the atmosphere was elegantly casual and quite cozy with the low lighting. Best part? I walked in wearing jeans and didn't feel underdressed at all. Win.
For dinner, I ordered the swordfish special, which came with asparagus and a lobster mac n cheese. The fish was cooked to perfection, which is hard to do with swordfish since it's a tougher filet. The asparagus were a bit wilted and overcooked for my liking (I prefer it somewhat fresher/crispier). But oh, em gee - the lobster mac n cheese was TO DIE FOR. Hell, I'd go back and just order a massive plate of that decadent, cheesy goodness.
Now. What I really DIS-liked about this joint was the demographic of the diners. I'm 30, but nearly everyone else dining there was 40-50+. Not exactly a hip n happening crowd. But, that's my fault for living in the 'burbs, I suppose.
Overall, a nice dinner. But the lobster mac n cheese wasn't enough to keep me coming back and put up with the older crowd. I'd rather hang in the Short North.
This is my first time to visit J Gilbert's and I must say I am an instant fan. Since I travel on business I usually sit at the bar and tonight I was waited on by two of the best customer focused bartenders I have come across in awhile! Sue and Steph were great!
The Yelp check in special, Maytag potato chips, was really good. Thinly sliced potato chips served smothered in blue cheese. If you like chips I strongly recommend them.
For my entree, I had the top sirloin with pecan green beans and lobster mac-n-cheese...! When the meal was served it was perfect: a nice medium rare steak with the crunch of the sautéed green beans and creamy goodness that is lobster mac....simply delicious!
For dessert  I had the chocolate lava cake with candied raspberries. This was simply awesome....and when you order it a' la mode with vanilla ice cream it just doubles the enjoyment!
All in all, great meal with awesome service! Â The only complaint....no Wi-Fi? Â That little oversight needs to be corrected.
I've been to this location twice. Â The first time was fine, but didn't leave a strong impression. Â This second time was Valentines Day, and I fully admit that it's not very fair to rate a place based on the craziness they have to endure for V-Day. Â So there's my disclaimer.
My friend and I decided to take ourselves out for a Forever Alone Valentines Date, and we opted for J Gilberts because their prix fixe menu sounded like a great choice.
The maitre d's seemed completely frazzled when we came in. Â This was mostly my fault - we had a reservation at 6pm and walked in around 6:03. Â The woman ahead of me was 20 minutes late for her 5:45 reservation, so this probably threw the girls off, and then I was a tick late for mine.... so I'll slap my own hand. Â
The waiter seemed a little nervous and overwhelmed, which again, I'm chalking up to V-Day craziness. Â It took him about 15-20 minutes before he took our order, but at some point during that time he brought out some bread, so that wasn't a major deal. Â As the meal progressed, he seemed to settle down and cracked me up with some joke about the mashed potatoes, so kudos to him.
Food:  The clam bisque was yummy.  The smashed potatoes were seriously some of the best taters I've ever had.  I'd go back just for them.  They were that good.  My friend wasn't crazy about the scallops, but said that they were fine.  My filet was a bit of a mixed bag.  It was super tender and I love flavoring added from the wood grilling.  I ordered the steak medium rare.  The edges were cooked to a perfect temperature, but the cut of the meat was very thick, the middle came out very nearly raw.  That was a disappointment.  My friend liked her Crème Brûlée.  I wasn't wild about my cheesecake. Â
I'm willing to give this place another shot, mostly cuz I will be dreaming about smashed potatoes.
My husband and I went here for an early Valentines date. Â We had a reservation and were seated quickly. Â The restaurant is very cozy and romantic. Â You would never guess you were inside an office building. Â
The service was decent and food was delivered quickly. Â The wine list was extensive. Â The waitress seemed but off when we ordered the three course meal. Â I got the crab bisque which was good. Â I also got the wood fired filet. It is cooked over a wood grill and it tasted burnt and dry. Â The house steak sauce was great however. Â The mashed potatoes were fine but nothing to rave about. Â The asparagus was seasoned well (and I am not usually a big fan of asparagus) The creme brule for desert was good but again not spectacular.
There was nothing that was "wrong" with our dinner or food but for in the price range I would go/ prefer other places.
Overhyped for the price. I thought this would be a special place for the wife and my anniversary. I was right about the romantic atmosphere at least but the rest, not so much.
We started with the onion rings which might have been our favorite part of the meal. I really liked all four sauces they came with. The steak was good and tender but needs a serious seasoning addition. My wife didn't like any of the sides, and I thought most of them were below average. The lobster mac was very bland and I ended up picking out the lobster pieces to eat and leaving the rest. I liked the asparagus but I think I got maybe 6 stalks in total. The wine list was impressive but most were out of my price range. I settled for a mediocre bottle of chardonnay that tasted like could have been had for a few bucks at a grocery.
Dessert was pretty good creme brulee but nothing to write home about. I'll take the creme brulee at Figlio any day. Also they got our order wrong the first time and brought my wife an incorrect side. For two people, the bill came to about 100 bucks which we both felt bad for spending given the quality. Will not return.
Well lets see. Â I've been here at least ten times. Â The food is always delicious, and generally a good deal in terms of steakhouses since the sides are included (I mean really, who is going to order just "steak" anyway). Â
Their service has been going down hill and now it is so bad that it is not even worth going because we get too upset. Â We went this summer and our waitress totally forgot about us while out smoking or something and after asking for our drinks three times we had to ask management to bring our drinks. Â Then last night we had a reservation, yet still had to wait 40 minutes to be seated and the horrible service just continued on all night. Â Horrid. Â Don't go!
How far can a restaurant fall in just one visit?
The wife, kid-unit, and I all went to JG's for our annual New Year's Eve fete with our good friends. Â This has been a tradition since before the kid-unit would even eat steak.
There was very little "good" to say about our visit. Â The wait-staff (we had two, a girl who introduced herself, and a man who did not) was aloof, though relatively attentive to our needs. Â Our friends had a few questions about items on the menu, and out waiter answered them knowledgeably, but in a really "put-off" manner.
I ordered my standard, which is the triple filet (two Bearnaise, Â one mushroom sauce), along with a shrimp cocktail and a wedge salad. Â Kiddo ordered the kids filet ($12), and the wife ordered a baked potato and a shrimp cocktail as well.
My steaks were done correctly (medium), and the Bearnaise was good. Â The mushrooms have changed from a mushroom in a wine reduction to wine-soaked mushrooms (not good). Â The sides were fine, though unremarkable. Â
The shrimp cocktail has changed significantly since I was there last. Â In the past, the shrimp was served on a bed of tortilla strips and peppers with a vinaigrette. Â This is no longer the case, though. Â Instead, the shrimp was served over a bed of ice "diamonds" (hard to call them anything else, because the clarity of the ice was actually quite impressive). Â The shrimp was served with traditional cocktail sauce (with fresh horseradish-- a nice touch), and a remoulade, as well.
Quality of the shrimp was good, with the exception of one of them that still had a leg attached. Â Not a big deal, but also not the quality I expect from JGs'.
This is where things went downhill. Â My daughter's steak was served, and though it was a decent portion for a filet, it had an odor about it. Â At first I chalked it up to either the wood smoke from the grilling, or from the other food.
After I cut it up, she tried it and told me she didn't like the flavor (which is really unusual for her). Â I tried it as well, and found the flavor "off" a bit. Â She ate about half the steak, and finished up her chips and grazed at some of the items on our shared appetizer plates. Â I tried another piece and found the steak to be "sour." Â
I took a piece over to my wife, had her smell it and taste it. Â After about two bites, she had to spit it out.
I took a piece to the manager, and he declared the smell to be "fine", but graciously offered to remove the entree from our bill (which I accepted). Â However, the more I think about it, the more I believe that the beef they served my daughter had begun to go bad.
This is the quality I absolutely don't expect from JG's, and hope this was a one-time occurrence, but for more than a hundred bucks for the meal, I want to be wowed, not disgusted.
One of my favorite restaurants in Columbus, for sure. Â This was our second time here and even better than the first. (We went for the bar's happy hour last time - ditch the durango shrimp, get the filet. The chocolate "souffle" - more like a lava cake, was pretty good). We went for the regular dining because they mailed me a $25 coupon for my birthday.
We started off with the maytag potato chips because of a foursquare deal - I thought it was pretty good, the girlfriend thought it was just ok. I normally don't like blue cheese, but the dressing had a great bite and aged cheese taste to it. SUPER greasy though.
Our meal was then followed up by a sourdough bread with two different types of butter. Neither of us like sourdough, so it was meh. Though the 2nd type of butter - not sure what it was - smelled and tasted great. Some other reviewers got pretzel bread.
My gf got the 4oz filet mignon combo with crab cake, lobster mac and cheese, and sauteed spinach. The spinach is what you'd expect, nothing mind blowing. Crab cakes were delicious, although a little dry. However, they have a tasty tangy dipping sauce for the crab which more than makes up for it. The lobster mac and cheese...omg, they was heaven in a dish. I've never tasted mac and cheese so good. Also had these breadcrumbs or something on top that gave it such a nice little crunch. She got her steak medium as her jaw was a little sore and didn't want to get medium rare. Still extremely juicy, in fact, I thought it was juicier than my medium rare (though she thought the opposite). For my filet, I had the garlic brocolini and mushroom risotto sides. The risotto was pretty good, creamy and lots of mushrooms. The brocolini was about average.
Since they knew we were going for my birthday, I was also offered a free dessert, score! They brought out a tray with all their dessert offerings and we got the almond canoli because the pile of berries was speaking to me. Excellent, excellent. Great crunch to the canoli, the chocolate mousse filling wasn't too heavy (though it kinda tasted like dark chocolate nutella as the consistency was about the same), berries were very sweet (probably soak in sugar?), and the white sauce wasn't overly sweet.
We also got a "pearly white" wine flight. Some amazing smelling (fruity) wines that tasted pretty good.
Our service was some of the best I've had. I didn't catch our server's name, but he was extremely nice and was just great all around. There was a bit of a wait time in between being seated and seeing our server though.
Our ~$90 meal came down to about $50 after my $25 coupon, free appetizer, and free dessert. They even have a promotion right now of a free $20 GC when you buy $100 - we're planning on coming back. They send you offers in the mail all the time if you sign up for their emails. As we were leaving, the employees at the entrance actually gave us a $25 off $75 coupon =D.
Overall - Great food at a price point you'd expect to pay much more in larger cities.
Stopped by with some friends for happy hour and appetizers.  Bar was over crowed. My first drink was while standing.  Once our group found a table, we ordered more drinks and appetizers while telling the waiter we needed separate checks.  Our appetizers were special happy  hour price but were no better that what you would find at Applebees. When we asked for our checks the waiter returned with one check.  We asked once again for separate checks.  He said it would take some time to divide the check.  He was told we had another event to attend and we could only wait another 10 min.  When he returned with check they were all wrong.  It took the manager to correct the problem and about 30 min. Â
Will not be back.
Visited for Thanksgiving day lunch. They had a special menu for the occasion. I ordered steak and scallops. Do they EVER know how to make scallops, yum. Very class place. Steak wasn't medium rare but rather medium. Oh and their new thing is recycling wine corks. Different and cool. I am a fan. Worth trying out.
Review Source:We went here on Thanksgiving and were expecting more from it. We had the onion rings for an appitizer which were nothing special and 4 rings for $8 is a bit expensive. The salad was fine, nothing special, not enough dressing and very small portion. My hunsband had a steak which was overdone and he had asked for medium. They took it back and brought a fresh one and took his meal off the tab which was nice. For sides we had brocolli which was 4 tiny pieces of rabe and I had the Salmon which has good and the veggie platter which was alos good but too oily and half of it was mushrooms (cheaper I guess). Dessert was good, we had the berry cobbler, carrot cake and choclate cake, in all we still paid $100 and were neither full nor really satisfied, I recommend going to J Alexanders next door for a much better meal that satisfy you more for less!
Review Source:So I've been on a steak kick and I've been told time and again that J Gilbert's was an excellent choice.
Unfortunately, not in my experience. Â I got the fixed price menu with the filet and salmon combination. Â
My salad was good, sure. Â
The steak was overdone to start, and surprisingly devoid of flavor. Â I had the same issue with the salmon. Â The mashed potatoes were good, the roasted corn I substituted in due to my asparagus aversion was just kinda icky. Â
Dessert was chocolate cake, which was ok as well. Â
The service was excellent. Â Marcus helped us out and was a pretty damn cool guy. Â
With the balance of good and bads in this review, I might have given this a 3-star rating for "A-OK"...whch kind of means "Just OK" in my head, but at $85 for the two of us...I should have been wowed. Â So, I've experienced better and was unfortunately disappointed.
I went here for dinner last week. The ambiance was not what I expected for a steakhouse; it almost reminded me of a lodge. The service is great (although our meals took forever to arrive), and the servers are very helpful. Shortly after ordering, warm sourdough bread arrives at your table. While extremely tempting, don't finish it off before your meal comes!
I started with the Caesar salad, which was pretty good....just a standard Caesar. For the main course I ordered the combination, consisting of a  6 oz. filet and substituted the lobster tail for salmon per request. It was served with their chipotle mashed potatoes and asparagus. Unfortunately, I forgot to order my filet mignon medium rare (and the server failed to ask), so it was a tad overcooked for my liking. Regardless, it was still pretty tender.
The salmon was quite tasty and had flavor from whatever kind of wood was used to smoke it. The asparagus was cooked to perfection, and the chipotle potatoes definitely added some heat to the meal! You may want to steer clear of those if you can't handle much spice.
Dinner was finished off with the creme brulee for dessert. It was a tough decision between that and the chocolate cake, but the server recommended the creme brulee, so I went with it! No disappointments, but I'll have to try the chocolate cake next time...if there is one.
I got the bone-in ribeye and was expecting much more. Â I'm no butcher but the meat seemed to be really poor quality. Â Very sinewy. Â Not tender at all. Â I ordered it medium rare, it was cooked medium rare, but my jaw was tired. Â Someone else got the fillet and it looked really unimpressive but I was told it as "ok". Â The potatoes and the lobster mac and cheese were good but that was about it. Â A steakhouse with crappy steak. Â My guess is that their trying to reduce costs because business is down due to the economy. Â I can get a better ribeye under cellophane at Kroger. Â Very little quality for the money. Â The service was good at least.
Review Source:Completely satisfied with this meal! I have been to Morton's, and I much prefer J Gilbert's to Morton's. We tried the Calamari, which was really good. I went with their Pre Fixe menu (I'm a sucker for these) with the Caesar, petite fillet and salmon and creme brulee.
The fillet was to die for. I don't think it had much, if any seasoning, but it melted in my mouth and that tells me they have really good meat. I always ask for steak rare, because I love it rare and I really like it med. rare, so I figure if they overcook it a little I'm fine. My "rare" was more medium rare, but it was amazing nonetheless. The mashed potatoes that came with the meal were cheesy and wonderful. The salmon was not the best piece of fish I have ever had, but it definitely was not the worst. I really like pre fixe menus for the diversity, but if I went back I would just stick to seafood or steak- not a combo of the two.
The Caesar was a really nice rendition, it came with anchovies for the people out there who like that kind of thing. The greens were fresh and crispy, and it was a really large portion.
The creme brulee was not the best I've ever had--that coveted position is reserved for Cameron's. It was still pretty good for a pre fixe meal dessert.
Service was really good here, which always adds to a dining experience. There were six of us, including my Dad who likes to rib servers-- she took his jokes in stride and had some fun with us.
The lobster Mac and cheese is to die for! Pair it with asparagus and steak and you have a perfect meal. Great wine selection. Monica served me both times I was here, made great recommendations and was attentive to my needs as a customer. She even remembered me after I had not been in for 4 months.
Review Source:This was a great experience. Â We had visited J. Gilbert's years ago, but somehow it had fallen off our radar. Â We decided last night on a whim to give it a go, and we were NOT disappointed.
To start off, we had an excellent server who was able to make some great wine suggestions. Â Of course, my husband had to point out he did recommend one of the more expensive selections. Â Well, I think it was well worth it.
I had the house salad, a very nice mixed greens salad with pine nuts, etc. Â It was fresh, tasty, and served on a chilled plate with a chilled fork. Â It was a nice touch that many other restaurants fail to do.
The main course for me was the BBQ pork chops with the chipotle mashed potatoes was fantastic. Â The chops were not especially thick, but by the time I was done, I was nicely full. Â I would recommend this dish to anyone.
For dessert, we shared their apple and cherry crisp (with a nice dip of ice cream on top). Â It was a very generous portion, but was perfect for sharing. Â We cleaned it up, even though we were pretty full. Â We just couldn't help ourselves.
All in all, I can't think of anything bad to say about our experience. Â It was a friendly, warm, and welcoming atmosphere. Â The restaurant was nicely full, but they still had room for us even though we didn't have a reservation on a Friday night. Â Give it a try if you've never been. Â I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I noticed no one mentioned that J. Gilbert's is owned by the Houlihans chain, which blew my mind (because I never liked that restaurant) and it was a little disappointing when I learned the news. Â The upshot is that there are only a handful of J. Gilberts throughout the midwest and east coast- and Columbus is lucky enough to have one at Worthington Crosswoods. Chain or not, it is a great restaurant.
The dining room is classic steakhouse and the bistro-like bar is chic. Don't even get me started on the steaks, which are top notch. I can't say it's my favorite steakhouse in town, but the quality and portions are great for the prices. J. Gilbert's happy hour food specials are awesome too... The surf and turf special can't be beat.
Boy, do I ever miss this place! After I moved to the eastside, I haven't been back, but the memories linger on.
I like this place much more before the fascist smoking ban went into affect. This was the best cigar bar on the North End of Columbus. The bartenders were always friendly and professional. They knew what they were doing and were very good at it.
Did I mention the martinis? Wow - are they good here! In addition, the food is incredible. Whatever they grill - steak, chicken, seafood - it is remarkable. You'll love the flavor and the ambiance.
Whether you need to wind down or wind up - J Gilbert's is the place to go. It's an exquisite upper-shelf establishment that caters to your every appetite. Enjoy!
This is one of the few steak houses you can get Prime CAB (Certified Angus Beef). Â About 1% of the beef out there makes this grade, plus, the meat is wet aged about 21 days.
So, needless to say the meat should be tasty, right? Â Well thankfully, in this case, this is right. Â They try to add toppings like blue cheese, shitake mushrooms and bernaise sauce, but I'd encourage you not to add these things - they just detract from the meat flavor.
The steaks I'd reccomend are the fillet and the strip. Â I haven't had the bone in fillet yet, but I'm imagining it's just as good.
Appetizers to try are the blue cheese chips and that's about it. Â Stay away from the Calamari, crab cakes and especially the muscles - they all lack flavor and zest.
