In a nutshell: nothing to write home about.  Overpriced for the value, with the meat very tough.  Everything doused in garlic to the point of presenting me with intestinal discomfort, and I REALLY like garlic.  I guess people come for the ambiance and the booze, so, have your drinks here and then go to dinner elsewhere.

So I decided to try this place on Saturday afternoon for cocktails and lunch/early dinner.  We walked in and were greeted and decided to sit one of the tables in the bar area.  We finally after about 5 minutes were greeted by our waitress who was pretty mediocre in her service.  She gave us menus and asked us if we wanted to start with any drinks, I asked her if she has tried any of the ones I was interested in and she replied "I usually drink things just straight up on the rocks" - as a waitress (which I was one) you don't answer questions like that.  How is that trying to sell your items? Anyway - we ordered the fried pickles since it came with a wasabi cream on the side (that's what sold us) - when they came out the fried pickles didn't even look fried, they looked like they had a thin coat of glass on them and the wasabi cream tasted like sour cream..there was no hint of wasabi.  Next for entrees, I got the Nori Ahi Tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes and some sort of "Asian slaw" on top.  First things first, the ahi tuna should NEVER taste like fish. And mine did.  It was somewhat edible after I peeled a black layer off the sides which I assumed was the skin.  The wasabi potatoes were okay, nothing to rave about and the slaw for me just didn't connect, it was missing some sesame oil or something to tie the "Asian theme".  My boyfriend got the Skyscraper sandwich.  The bread was stale and the pulled pork was eh.  The one you get from Costo tastes much better in my opinion. Once the bill came we paid and for some reason another waitress came to take the bill and when I looked for our waitress she was in the back making up silverware.  The place was empty.  I don't like when other waitresses tend to a table when there is no need for it.  All  in all the food was nothing I would go back and try again and the service was not that fantastic either.  Next time I'd rather eat at the Jefferson Diner next door.

The food was great, beer selection was great, and the atmosphere was amazing! This restaurant in no way resembles its neighbor, the Jefferson Diner. The J-Towne Tavern makes you feel like you're in an authentic English Pub! The service wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible. One of the cleanest, nicest bathrooms I've ever seen in a restaurant too!

Can you say Ahi Tuna Cannoli's?  Phenomenal! Not to mention the outstanding service from the front of the house manager to the waitstaff and the personal service from owners who came over and said hello to us and asked how everything was... just a great experience overall to quote my 5 1/2-year-old daughter "the people are so nice here"... The Decore and ambience is as warm and inviting as the family feel the staff presents ... Looking forward to eating our way through the rest of the menu...we will be back again and again thank you so much!

The menu was a pleasant surprise, in that it had some interesting and unusual dishes and some really intriguing beers. However, the food was merely average and it was pricy.

We had the mozzarella half moons to start, which were pretty basic. There was free bread as well. For main courses, I had the grilled salmon rustica, which was a little salty but still worth eating. The portion was generous. It came with an assortment of veggies in the tomato sauce, which I really appreciated. I eat mostly veggies, and I hate when they're an afterthought,  but this dish was definitely built with them in mind. Points for J-Towne.

My companion had the shepherd's pie, which also was a little salty but the gravy had a deep meatiness to it that was appreciated. Overall, the food had potential but didn't quite reach it. It's just average.

The desserts were not good. I had fresh berries with cream on a flaky pastry crust. It was all parts, no actual synergy. The berries were too tart, the cream was bland, the crust was just a random shard. The deconstructed tiramisu was also just a bunch of ingredients that happened to be in the same cup. Not worth the calories at all.

My companion had a Monty Python beer which was just meh, but wow, we've never seen it before, so that was cool. I had some cocktail I can't remember, but I do recall there were enough cocktails that sounded good that I had trouble picking one.

This place has potential but they need a better chef or something. I prefer the diner. Somehow I feel the food is better! Maybe it's because my expectations are lower on the other side of the wall.

The food isn't really any better than the diner next door, but at least you can get some drinks with your meal. The only other positive it has over the diner is that you can eat without being bombarded by all the Food Network references.

While my wife and I have never sat down for a formal dinner, we've had many meals/ drinks at the bar.
We really enjoy the "micro brew" selection, especially the IPA Lagaunitis.
We tend to order a bunch of apps which are always fantastic....nacho's, calamari, sliders (cheese burgers & short ribs), pizza, etc..
It's definitely a great place to watch a game, have some great brews and apps.

My husband and I stopped in at J Towne today on a whim. The place is very pretty and we had high hopes, however we did have some technical difficulties right from the start.  First impression was poor because as we walked in the host saw us,  walked passed us with no greeting and then spent some time changing the TV station at the bar rather then seat us. (I guess he had his priorities). That left us standing there for a few minutes for no apparent reason and without acknowledgement.  A waitress finally started to seat us when the gentleman finally came over to do his job.  After we were seated the waitress came right over and asked for our drink order.  I ordered a specialty martini found on their menu (some kind of pepper martini).  She returned to tell me they didn't have the ingredients for that particular martini.  I then ordered another martini and it came in a very large glass not a martini glass (tip: if they are loosing money at the bar and can't figure out why-it's because you are serving HUGE drinks). Also, their martinis are over priced for the usual customer base in Sussex county.  I am from the city so $10 martinis seem almost normal to me but the locals don't feel the same way.  We ordered the fried pickle appetizer.  It was fine but could have been better.  The pickles were cut too thin and the batter was bland.  If they had use tempura batter, the dish would have been amazing.  The Cubano sandwich was tasty and the steak sandwich was also good but very light on steak.  About halfway thru our meal we both could have used a refill (another martini for me and beer for my husband) but the waitress never returned to see how we were doing so the restaurant lost out on that revenue.  All in all a pretty expensive dinner ($70 for 2) that wasn't worth the money.  We will probably not return which is disappointing since the place seems to have potential in both the look and menu-just horrible execution problems and over priced food and drink items.

Stopped in with my GF while we were passing through... Nice place and atmosphere but food does not match.   She ordered a Cubano sandwich which was super greasy.  I ordered a basic salad... Stacked 6" high on a small plate.  6 bites in I realized I was eating rotten spring mix.  Gross.

I visited the J-Towne Tavern last night with my boyfriend and his parents.  We got there just before closing time (10pm), but they were nice enough to seat us and said the kitchen would still be happy to cook for us.  Our server was okay; found her to be rude at times.  I know we were her last table, but if you aren't going to provide good service, just tell us you're closed and we will go elsewhere.

The menu was extensive; appetizers, salads, pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, steaks, chicken.  My boyfriend's parents tried the ahi tuna cannolis - tuna inside a cannoli shell served with a special sauce, sprouts, and sliced avocado.  Points for originality.  We also tried the mixed seafood in a nest (seafood served inside a semolina bread bowl - rated "very good" by boyfriend's mom), wild monkey burger (peanut butter, banana, and bacon atop a burger - rated "strange, but good" by boyfriend's dad), fig salad (arugula, figs, goat cheese, portabellas - dried figs, not fresh), and spare rib nachos (spare rib meat, jalapenos, cheese, sour cream, and guac atop tortillas - NOT homemade guac).  A restaurant that can't be bothered to make it's own guacamole loses major points in my book.  I was unimpressed by the food although appreciated the attempts at adding a unique twist to typical bar food.

I won't be visiting this place again anytime soon.  It wasn't horrible, but certainly nothing special.

Drinks were OK and reasonable, Menu was a little pricey for the amount you get. I was surprised when I read the other reviews about the Salt & Pepper shakers, It took me 3 trys to get my waitstaff to bring them. She told me that there were only 4 sets for the whole restaurant !!!!!! Cant figure that out !!!!! Dessert was brought over from the Diner, that's not a surprise because its the same owners. Overall it wasn't worth the value but the food was "Ok"

I always say those who cannot cook use lots of garlic.  We did a careful menu read through and noted that some of the dishes mentioned the use of garlic. We felt fairly comfortable that our selections the shrimp/scallops in a dijon cream sauce and the pulled short rib sandwich would be garlic free.  Alas it was not to be.  Spinach accompanied the shrimp/scallop dish and it was absolutely loaded with garlic.  I took a few bites of the short rib sandwich and thought garlic?  I opened it up and the sandwich was covered with garlic. The straight out of package house salad was served with too little salad dressing.  There were no salt and pepper shakers on the tables.  If you like garlic you might like this place.

Spouse asked me to add that the shrimp/scallop dish would have been very good if the restaurant used nutmeg on the spinach instead of garlic. The dijon cream sauce is good enough to stand on it's own. The shrimp and scallops were properly prepared.

The staff is very young but they are friendly and efficient.  The place is new and looks fresh and clean  the decor is comfortable.   Most items on the menu are moderately priced, but there is wide range of prices.

I would recommend this place for drinks.  They served a really nice Margarita and the beers were reasonable priced.

We went to J-Towne Tavern for the first time this week. Walking in, we were impressed with the ambiance and decor of the restaurant. We sat down, and our server was very attentive - We got our drinks and warm bread right away. The menu is limited to a few selections of appetizers, salads, and dinners with some daily specials as well. We ordered the fried calamari which was good, along with the ceasar salad. For dinner, I ordered the Blackened Tilapia and Shrimp Special and my husband ordered the Chicken Special with spinach, mushrooms, and cheese. He asked for the mushrooms to be put on the side but when the server brought the dish out, the dish was covered with mushrooms. He scraped them off of his food instead of making a scene and sending it back. My blackened Tilapia and shrimp special came out just that way - black! It was completely charred and didn't have the balsamic sauce that the menu had mentioned.  I tried scraping off some of the top layers of the charred food but it was so dry underneath that it had no taste... even with a few lemon wedges. I was disappointed because the dish really sounded good in writing. I ended up not eating it, or wrapping it up because I don't think it'd get any better after heated up again. The server took the dish and didn't care to ask if I enjoyed it or anything. We had room for desert so we ordered the brownie desert... which was also dissapointing - tasted like something I could've ordered at the diner next door. Again, it sounded great on the menu but it came out as a brownie with vanilla ice cream in an ice cream bowl. Nothing special! All in all, we've decided that we won't be coming in for dinner again. There are so many great restaurants in the area that can give us a lot more for the $100 we spent that night at J-Towne Tavern.
