We came here for some after dinner drinks to celebrate our recent engagement. The bar seats about 15 people and is located more or less at the center of the restaurant. Why I feel compelled to write a review on just having drinks is because of a certain bartender. The man behind the bar on this Saturday evening was amazing. It was like watching a show. I have lived in and visited many major cities and sat at 100's of bars and I can say that this man had it hands down. A true professional at his craft. Â In the time we sat at this bar he worked his way through half a bowl of fresh fruit adding juices and using rinds as decoration. They did not have my go to honey whisky but he suggested an alternative that hit the spot. While working on our first drink we noticed him making a drink with Champagne and we got the idea to order a couple to celebrate. We explained to him our situation and asked for some drink suggestions with Champagne. He whipped us up two different drinks and presented them to us with a congratulations and that they were on the house! Both were delicious and had my mind spinning that a man with his talent is working in such a small town. He was a gentleman and a delight to watch and I am so glad our lives crossed paths that Saturday night. Cheers!
Review Source:I've been reluctant to review the Jack of Hearts until they changed their menu (which has just happened). I'm pleased with the changes, though still not overwhelmed. Went there on Saturday afternoon with 4 friends for a meeting/lunch time. The wait staff were very nice and attentive, a deffinite plus. Many new additions of sandwiches, salads and appetisers. Their new fried pickle chips are a real hit, some of the best I have had (and I am an authority on the fried pickle!). Unfortunately, I had a ruben sandwich and wasn't really excited. It was a bit on the oily side and the kraut was not up to par, but otherwise was okay. The others were satisfied with their meals, so I'll go back and try something else.
My conclusion is this is a great place for a drink and a snack. Being, essentially, the only bar in downtown Weaverville, I hope they succeed and I think their new menu is a step in the right direction.
My experiences at Jack of Hearts have always been subpar, but after my last visit I will never be going again, which is unfortunate because I live within walking distance. I have worked in food service for many years, and because of this I always try to be courteous and compassionate with those in the restaurant industry. That being said, despite my best efforts to make myself enjoy the experience at Jack of Hearts, it was unsatisfactory the last time I went, to put it mildly.
My boyfriend blames it on me; I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and, according to him, this was the wrong choice to make at this restaurant. It arrived without any sort or sauce, and devoid of flavor in and of itself. A friend of mine who was dining with me also ordered the same thing. We both asked for barbecue sauce, and the waiter reported back that they didn't have any and that the chef would have to whip some up, special, just for us. I felt guilty to put him to the extra work, but the sandwich was completely bland, so it needed something. After everyone else at the table had finished their meal, the "barbecue sauce" finally came. It was essentially hot ketchup. I ate most of my sandwich because I was hungry and desperate. My friend chose to take her sandwich home because she knew it would be better with actual BBQ sauce at a later time. The waiter asked me how the sauce was, and I lied, saying it was good. He retorted with a snooty comment about how he would let the chef know since it was such a bother to make it for us in the first place.
When my friend took a bite of her sandwich the next day, she was greeted with a nauseatingly long hair right in the middle of the sandwich.
This place is a sinking ship, and I welcome the next restaurant that will take its place.
In town on business and wanted to try something locally, was warmly greeted and seated immediately, the menu had some good selections although the prices were a little more than what I was expecting, I tried the "Wild Boar Sausage hoagie with kettle chips, food was hot and had a great flavor..This would be a great place for a business lunch or an evening drink, would give it another go when I'm back in the area.
Review Source:We are locals and we tried Jack of Hearts for a quick lunch since it was across the street from my daughter's school. Â Huge mistake. Â If you'd like to pay $13 for grits and cayenne pepper...this is your place. Â If you'd like to see your debit card charged for your meal and the meals of everyone else in the dining room...this is your place! Â They even used off-brand malt vinegar on the tables with the fish and chips. Â
I will never recommend this place to anyone. Â To top it off, I will not be able to get the money that was inappropriately charged to my account restored for SIX days! Â Thanks a lot Jack of Hearts. Â Maybe they should consider changing the name of the pub to the Joker instead of the Jack of Hearts. Â Oh wait...the only joke is the amount left in my checking account after eating there! Â I'm neither amused nor satisfied with this establishment. Â Eating here is one gamble I'll never take again.
A local recommended this place to us, and it was a perfect spot. Â I had the Fish and Chips, which was awesome. Â Fresh, crispy, perfectly cooked. Loved the portion size. Â I had a salad appetizer with the Champagne Poppy Seed dressing that was excellent. Served with the Tempranillo wine which I never tried before - perfect combo. Â My only complaint is I wish there was acoustic music or something similar during the dinner hour. Â The music apparently didn't start until 9pm, so it was a little disappointing to arrive at 7 and there was no music. Â But giving 5 stars for the food and service.
Review Source:Meeting some new friends and some old friends, someone selected this establishment rather than risk the crowds and lack of parking in Asheville for some annual event or another. A good choice, as the Jack has a reasonable menu of food but an excellent menu of beers.
A plate of blue corn chips and a fresh pico de gallo was on the table. The chips were fresh and crisp, the only problem with the pico was that there wasn't nearly enough of it. I like salsa and a single bit of a chopped tomato on a large triangle of chip doesn't do it for me. So for my main, I went with the fish tacos. More of that yummy pico de gallo on it and a tender piece of fish on a lovely soft taco. Really good, but it left me wanting more.
An order of the shrimp and grits was ordered by one of my tablemates and I've posted a picture of it. Now THAT was an excellent five star looking meal. Lots of big shrimps in there and a lot of food. She really enjoyed it!
As for the beer, some great choices in uncommon drafts including some locals. I really like drinking different beers that I've never seen and probably won't ever see again.
Good service, but the waitress seemed to be happy to see us done - she never asked if anyone in our party of 8 wanted dessert. And I did, but when the checks were presented I took that as the opportunity to depart.
Loved eating on their back deck!
Yes, I'll return.
Suggested as a good place for dinner by my sister, who's a local. Â The three of us went.
I had the Fish and Chips. Â Now a good "English pub" style place, which is somewhat the deal here, will provide malt vinegar without being asked. Â The waitress did just that.
The service? Â TOP NOTCH! Â Not only was the waitress very cute...she was knowledgable about the entire menu (both food and drink) and provided great information.
Parking was easy in the back lot, and you can just walk up the stairs to the restaurant.
I will be back in the fall on my next visit.
We are locals and have finally given this new restaurant a shot. Â I waited a while hoping they would work the kinks out. Â I have spent 15 years working in downtown Asheville and am a long time fan of laughing seed. Plus have been to jack of the wood as well.
The space is beautiful and HUGE. Â We went for lunch. Â It was busy but not crowded. Â Maybe another 30 diners due to a couple big tables. Â
This is a good place for a business lunch. Â You are not rushed, the space is beautiful and the menu is diverse.
The owner apparently has read the reviews. Â They no longer offer the fish sandwich and the fish and chips plate now offers two pieces of fish plus plenty of fries. Â The side of coleslaw is a joke. Â It's maybe a tablespoons worth. Â Come on slaw is cheep... Why not offer a real side of it. Â This is a $14 lunch item. Â The fish was overlooked and the batter was nearly black from excessive cooking.
The firehouse chicken sandwich was tasty.  It's on decent store bought bread, toasted and buttered with a very thin smear of goat cheese, bacon and chicken.  Instead of a chicken breast, it's thinly sliced chicken breasts that appears to be cooked after it was sliced.  I think this was so they could serve a smaller portion of meat.  I wish it had been a whole  breast so that it would have been more juicy. Â
I asked the waiter...which is better the home made fries or chips. Â He said fries. Â They are the type I like. Â Skin on... But these were a disappointment. Â They must have been fried a while before we got there. Â They were very dark (almost burned), limp and cold. Â Like they were under a cool heat lamp for a while. Â
The beer selection is huge but we didn't partake as this was a week day lunch.
We will give another try but not likely to make the regular rotation due to prices. Â Lunch for 2 with no beer, no desert and no appetizers ran $35
Tried it again... Food was better. Â The homemade chips are much better than the fries. Â Still pricy!
We have only been once, but already I heart this place hard. Â Â As former residents of Weaverville we had to check out the new place in town. Â We both had fish tacos and shared a salad about two weeks ago, and I have been dreaming about going back ever since. Â The fish tacos had a pickled cabbage on them that was just done perfectly. Â The service was awesome, the atmosphere was fun and modern without being hipster-pretentious. Â Also, they are all about farm-to-table and who doesn't love that? Â Who would ever think two Ashevillans would drive to Weaverville to get great eats?? Â But that's just what we plan to do- often!
Review Source:We went here for a Tour de France party. It was nice they went to the trouble to do this and some homemade ice cream that was on the house was excellent. Hardly anyone showed up for the party though, so the word must have not gotten out. The TV wasn't big enough to enjoy the race, but we had a good time nonetheless. The menu created for the party was fun and creative. We definitely would go back next year for another Tour de France party, so I hope they do it again. I love what they have done with the building. it's beautiful, plenty of space and inviting. Will have to go back some time to order off the regular menu and hear some music.
Review Source:Great new restaurant in the heart of Weaverville! Â Owned by the same folks that did Jack of the Woods and Laughing Seed in Asheville, this is an impressive spot for lunch, dinner or drinks. Â Renovated from an old fire station, Jack of Hearts has a great location and their space is fantastic. Â The restaurant is very open, keeps some of the original elements of the building, and has a modern yet casual feel.
The menu is adventurous. Â I had an Asian salad with lots of udon noodles, grilled shrimp, and greens. Â For the price it was filling and a great lunch entree. Â Also tried some of their chicken sandwich with apple, bacon and brie(?). Â The service was great, and as we left they had live music. Â Their outdoor patio looks like a great place to grab a bite, a drink and sit back and relax.
Would definitely recommend Jack of Hearts if you're in the Weaverville area.
I had been looking forward to trying this new restaurant but like many of the other reviews I agree that this establishment is way over priced for what you get.
The first thing I noticed is that they are charging $3 more for the same fish and chips that are served at Jack of the Wood in downtown Asheville. Secondly, we witnessed problems at other tables all around us. The table next to us had their entrees arrive minutes after their appetizer and the customers complained about the timing of their orders. Next we went to the bar after dinner and a gentleman told the bartender his fish and chip where terrible and way to greasy after only having eaten half his dinner.
My wife ordered a grilled vegetable over quinoa dish that tasted good but for $15 was very small. I had the rueben which was a very small sandwich with a tiny amount of ingredients with a few fries for $10. Both of our meals came on a plate the size of a salad plate. We are both people who exercise regularly and watch what we eat but the sizes of these portions where small even for our standards especially when you consider the price.
I think this restaurant concept for a small town is a miss and the owner should take a serious look at rethinking the menu.
Our first experience at this new restaurant was not great. Â My friend and I went for lunch one day last week and were both disappointed.
We were greeted  by a very pleasant young man.  We were immediately given a bottle of water for our table which was a nice touch.
I ordered a shrimp salad which was very mediore. Â The noodles on it, obviously cold, had greasiness to them. Â There were very few spinach leaves (that was the only green salad on the plate) few slices of radish, some baby tomatoes and shrimp. Â The shrimp was okay, but slightly undercooked. Â This dish would be better served hot as it really did not represent a salad.
My friend ordered Fish and Chips. Â Having a lot of time in Britain and Australia we really know what good Fish and Chips is. Â The chips were just Okay. Â The fish batter was delicious, but the fish was most definitely under-cooked.
My friend is shy, unlike me, and will not complain, but she was not happy especially  as it was rather expensive for a lunch dish.
Our total bill was over $30 and the food and water was all we had.
That is pricey for a lunch that was not great.
We visited this restaurant for several reasons. Â One, it was new, Two, our families always have enjoyed the Laughing Seed and Jack of the Wood and have been patrons of both places for years.
I believe in giving restaurants a second chance so at some point, in the future, we may visit them again. Â Several other friends are going to give this place a try in the next couple of weeks so I am looking forward to hearing their experience.
