Thank goodness the food here is decent.
My boyfriend and I have been to Jake and Al's many times and have had an enjoyable experience, but this past week we went out for my birthday and definitely had a different experience. There was one server for the entire restaurant, and that was expressed to us when we sat down (saying that there would be a 10 minute wait or so until our order was taken, which was fine), but once our orders were taken, an hour passed before the server came back to let us know that they were out of fish tacos. Oddly enough, I had wondered why an hour after we ordered, the cook had either just then taken a look at the order itself, or the server hadn't been told of what menu items were unavailable that evening. Either way, we ordered something else, and about an hour and a half after we sat down we were able to eat.
Now, I'm sympathetic to the fact that they had only one server, but it was a Tuesday night...you don't have anyone else you can call to help out? It's not as if the restaurant was packed. Additionally, we understood the fact that the restaurant was understaffed, but the waitress tended to be sharp and rude as she was taking down our orders, and even pointed out that she was unprepared for the rush because she was wearing bedroom slippers!
I'm not sure if we will be going back to Jake and Al's after this experience. I like the fact that it's a locally-owned spot, but we really felt like we were putting the entire staff out simply by BEING there, and it put a sour note on what was otherwise a great birthday. There are other places that will gladly accept our business, and for the prices, I think we expected a little bit more care to be taken of the patrons, regardless of staffing issues.
Was a good place to take the family for dinner. Â The cheese fries appetizer needed a little longer to melt the lower cheese layers, but it didn't really affect the quality. Â I has the ribeye/crabcake special which was cooked perfectly. Â The cut of steak wasn't the best (a little grizzly) so only three stars, but the crabcake was AWESOME...back to 4 stars! Â Waitress was attentive and kept everyone happy. The bar was only partially full (it was a Tuesday night) so no complaints about noise. Â Overall a good place for a decent steak and some really good crabcakes.
Review Source:The food that I have had here has been pretty good if a bit high in price. The menu isn't the largest however the NY Steak I had was delicious.
The service was pleasant but slow in the resturant. The bar can get pretty loud but thankfully the resturant is separated so that you can talk if your havig a nice sit down meal. They have a large bar with a nice selection of different beers on tap and in bottles.
Almost a brand new establishment, (opened 2006, I believe), great (close) location to the Chesapeake Ranch Estates and to a smaller extent Drum Point. Â They have nice decor and a large bar with multiple TVs on every wall tuned in to a variety of sporting events and a fairly decent beer selection, though their top shelf liquor section is direly in need of being addressed.
The restaurant is adequately separated from what can be a very noisy bar area and they have an OK menu selection from burgers, a few steaks, appetizers like steamed shrimp, a few sandwiches, and so on.
It's unfortunate, however, that it seems like they have kids working in their kitchen because the food quality, presentation, and attention to detail varies from visit to visit.
For the most part, the wait staff has been good and attentive; usually finding a seat there isn't a debacle and the food comes out quickly.
They are a nice diversion for the area, but their prices, especially given the quality, are higher than they should be (for instance their filet mignon is similar in price, if not more than Outback's, yet the consistent quality of Outback's filet is not what you get).
One cannot help but to wonder if this is yet another place who is trying to fill in a niche in the lower Calvert area and gouge the locals while they can get by with it (or maybe doing business in Solomons and Lusby exceeds the cost in DC: say DuPont or Georgetown...who knows).
We'll go back because it's just so darn convenient, but you really must make wise choices of what you order and take advantage of specials, etc. to get a half way decent deal there.
