This review will be short and far from sweet. The Masked Consumers chose Jim's Restaurant in Prunedale for a Friday night dinner out on July 12th. Due to being delayed in heavy traffic, we arrived around 7:45 p.m. and had a choice of three empty tables, each still dirty from the previous diners. We sat down and waited for our table to be cleaned which was done with the swipe of a hand over the glass top, leaving streaks from food and liquids. No kidding. We should have walked out at that point, but we didn't and instead ordered the Sea Food in Lobster Sauce priced at a hefty $16.50, Kung Pao chicken and steamed rice.  Mostly-broken, fried won ton skins with a sweet dipping sauce were brought to the table. Opting to not choose a libation, we instead ordered water and iced tea, the latter looking like tea but tasting rather...unusual. The chicken in the Kung Pao was old and smelled and tasted as such. The seafood dish was fishy-smelling with a minimal serving of fish, including unopened mussels with bits of shell throughout. The only plus to this dish was the sauce. The rice was cold and old. The menu is gigantic and one wonders how so many dishes could possibly be prepared in a kitchen the size of a postage stamp, so to speak. But that's not all. In order to get to the bathroom, one must traverse the kitchen, leaving us to believe that the Health Department hasn't stopped by in quite awhile. While Jim's Restaurant touts, "Best of Chinese and American Food", we give it  1/2 star.
Review Source:On the fly my friend and I went to Jims and had their Dim Sum. Â Well, I have eaten Dim Sum from San Francisco to different restaurants on the Peninsula, Â Jim's was the BEST!. Everything was fresh, made to order and the largest pot stickers I have ever seen. Â Their cilantro and shrimp dumplings were unbelievably fabulous. Â I am definitely going back. Â I have eaten there numerous time and have never been disappointed. Â He really needs to move to Salinas as there are no good restaurants there, but he is worth the drive to Prunedale, especially on a beautiful and sunny day. Â Thanks Jim.
Review Source:I've been here 3 times in the past year. Â Apparently, from reading older reviews, I missed out on their hey-day.
The food is pretty good. Â I love the fried won-ton type chips with the sweet-hot dipping sauce they bring out every time. Â The noodle bowls are pretty good.
My main complaint is how long they take to get anything out of the kitchen. Â It takes FOREVER. Â The wait alone had deterred me from wanting to go back.
Upon trying Jim's the first time, we were very impressed - so much that we took family and friends there multiple times and it was all great. Â Then one of the friends we told to go eat there, told us it was awful. We couldn't hard believe it but sure enough the next time we went there, it was not the same. It was not even like the same place. Maybe the regular chef was gone?? We gave it a few more chances, but unfortunately it did not return to the original Jim's we came to love when we first started dining there. It's too expensive to eat out and not enjoy it so we won't be giving it another chance. Sorry Jim's! Â Was also disappointed in some miscommunication with service.
Review Source:I'm sorry to say I  have to down grade my review of Jim's.  I took my husband there for dinner.  I recommended the porkchop to him since I heard they were excellent.  I took a bite of it and was very disappointed.  They were very tender but  it was so over brined it didn't have meat texture; it was rather spongy.  If this were my first time going to Jim's I would probably not go back.
However, I ordered the Jim's Chow Fun and I was happy with it. Â I will probably go back but I'll probably get the Chinese food.
Don't let its location and exterior fool you. This is some GOOD food. (Just ignore the fact that it's in Prunetucky and right off the freeway.)
I liked the batch of hot crisps brought to the table while we perused the menu. The homemade chili sweet and sour available for dipping was top-notch. There was a variety of food to choose from -- traditional Chinese and American "bistro" fare. We decided to stick with Chinese and we were not disappointed.
We had:
Hot and Sour Soup - Piping hot and perfectly spicy.
Salt & Pepper Shrimp - Hot and crispy, right out of the fryer. Perfectly seasoned with salt, pepper, chili, and other spices that make your nose run. The shrimp was mixed in with some green onions, thin-sliced bells, and some onions. All very, very flavorful.
Jim's Egg Foo Young - I think it was called Jim's. It was the "special" egg foo young. There were three, large, fresh egg patties filled with mung beans. The patties were topped with crisp, fresh veggies (celery, broccoli, zucchini, asparagus), BBQ Pork, Shrimp, and Beef. I couldn't stop eating it...and I hate eggs.
We were too full for dessert, but asked for the dim sum and brunch menu and vowed to return in two weeks. The tough choice will be...do we have bacon apple sausage and waffles? Or dim sum?
Jim's has dim sum on the weekends, and since there isn't a huge crowd for dim sum, he cooks to order. Amazing food. There is both Chinese and American food, and both are wonderful. Authentic Chinese and tasty American food. I don't know where the chef was trained, but I know that he used to work in a hotel in San Francisco, where there are foodies abound. You can't go wrong with the menu since everything I have had is very, very good.
I keep missing the winemaker's dinner nights. I didn't realize that they occurred on the last Sunday of the month until I read the other reviews. I will keep this in mind since we love the food here, and I love wine tasting.
WOW Â I am was suprisingly impressed with the food in this tiny little restaurant that read chinese cuisine and the location i think should be in a busier city, but the food amazing i had the garlic lamb cooked med rare, and my boyfriend had the jewish fliet and they were both amazing and the dessert chocolate tart was even more of a treat i would definetley go again in a heart beat really good food!!
Review Source:We went here for dinner last saturday night, and the food & wine was outstanding. Â My husband had the steak and fries, and the fries were thin and crispy-Parisien style.
My dish was a chicken pasta with carbonara sauce with white wine cream sauce which was absolutely delicious. We also tried the fried shrimp with the panko bread crumb coating. Â Very fresh and tasty....Everything was great, and the server was friendly and outstanding. We ended dinner with a nice homemade cheesecake with lemon sauce and homemade vanilla bean ice-cream. Â It was a perfect dinner after visiting the aquarium. The prices were awesome too, and we will definitley be tempted to come back again.
I was lured in by the banner reading "Dim Sum, 10:30 am - 3:00 pm, Sat & Sun." Having to go to South San Jose for the nearest dim sum once a month, I was excited to see food culture arrive in Prune-tucky!
While the diversity of items could never rival a dim sum palace like Grand Fortune, it was a respectable offering of the old classics. What made this special is that it was so obviously house made. Sometimes the thickness of the noodles varied showing that it wasn't a Costco special, but rather made to order. The siu mai was some of the best I've ever eaten. The shrimp rice noodle could have used a bit more filling, but overall, everything was fresh and delicious. And, in true Prunedale style, by the time we'd finished eating, everyone at the  five filled tables were chatting with each other about dim sum. Fun!
So i love the food, you really can't get anything better in prunedale. i mean, its prunedale what else really is there, fast food? But the post is alwasy amazing and the calamari appetizer is perfect, its the only calamari i have ever actually craved. so if your looking for good food in good 'ol prunedale stop on by and don't be detered by the look of the place.
Review Source:I cannot tell you just how amazing of a find this place is. I mean, we don't really expect truly great food in good 'ol Prunedale. Really. The nickname for the "town" is Prune-tucky for pete's sake.
Anyway, you really can't go wrong with the food here. My favorite is the "prawns and penne pasta" which is a very sedate name for a luscious dish. When we want a carb load that is oh so good, we head out for that one.
I had lunch for the first time today with a friend, and a regular suggested the Black Angus hamburger. OMG!!!! I have not had a burger that good in ages. The chef/owner Steven even makes the buns fresh. Unbelievable.
Then there's the Chinese food. Get risky. Order anything. It's bound to be awesome. Many of the Western dishes could be found at a 5 star restaurant. I don't know how they jump from french fries and a burger to rack of lamb over beautiful potatoes.... but they do. If you ever need to stop off in Prunedale, which you might want to if you're down that way because the cheapest gas around is at the station there on the West side of the highway...anyway jump into Jim's. You won't regret it. It's right where the Burger King is, and a 100 times better.
OK, this place was *fabulous*! Â Was here for a friends bday, and we celebrated on a winemakers dinner night. What a great evening! My friend was running late... damn Red Barn traffic, so I went in to see how timely they start. They were so welcoming and accommodating... even told me a short cut so friend cut out at LEAST 30 minutes of traffic and wasn't even late. Â The featured wine was Hahn, and they started pouring a Rose all most as soon as you walked in the door. First course was a Salmon Confit Roasted fennel tart..... this was out of this world yummy!!! honestly. I could of eaten about 4 of these and been set for the night. But, one apiece then onto next course which was a tomato basil salad, tomato sorbet, and a cheese bread stick. also very yummy, ...AND grown by Gordon the host! The second course was served with a Tolosa Chardonnay. Â Then came an Intermezzo with a Grape Granite.... ohhhh man was this delish!! tiny little red grapes and sugar at the bottom and sorbet on top... you'd normally think these little grapes to be sour but these were sweet as could be. So onto the main course. now pouring the Hahn Merlot, and it was actually pretty good! I had the Olive oil infused chicken and grilled prawns over eggplant puree and crispy potato pancake. It was wonderful! Friend had the veal cutlet with poached artichoke in truffle oil with whipped creamy potatoes in Madeira sauce. Â I don't eat beef, but judging by the sounds that escaped her mouth every now and again, i was almost tempted to try it! Shame on me! They also offered a veal cutlet which I hear was wonderful. I actually ended up having a bite of this and it was wonderful! it pays to sit next to the host! ;) Â The dessert was a combo... restaurant had a strawberry creme brulee tart with vanilla ice cream. My birthday friend had a German chocolate cake. Ohhhh man... not even a fan of german chocolate cake, but damn if i didn't eat ALL that chocolate frosting. Â So what's another mile tomorrow???ugghhh
The host ~ Gordon and Annie were so pleasant and easy going. Â The owners and chef ~ Stephan and Annie~ awesome job!
I definitely plan to revisit this place. What a cool find!
By the by, they host the winemakers dinner on the last Sunday of each month!!
