My first time at John Holly's and I must preface by saying I ordered delivery - I'm right next door at work.
1- I ordered by phone, the person answering was very pleasant, very quick, very professional and the entire transaction took about 1 minute. Â :-)
2 - I recieved my food delivery in less than 10 minutes from ordering. Â I was dumbfounded and expected to find half cooked food or a soggy mess.
3- the food was delicious! Â Crab Rangoon, Dumplings and Ginger Shrimp. I only sampled the Ginger Shrimp as I wanted to save it for tomorrow. The to-go plate was JAM packed with shrimp.
Anxious to try John Holly's again to see if there is consistancy.
Simply and briefly speaking, this place is good. They offer an array of Chinese dishes as well as a Sushi Bar with quite a variety.
Chinese: they have 2 menus: main stream and an authentic one. We have tried both and they are tasty: the sea bass and filet are great. The authentic menu (in Chinese but they can help translate) has a few pretty yummy offerings albeit spicy. Tofu hot pot and fish in their special sauce are very good.
Sushi bar features the typical fare with a few creative rolls: we are mostly sashimi and more traditional sushi customers and thus are happy with fresher fish in Colorado.
This a neighborhood spot with many return customers who seem to go here as their weekly go to spot.
John is always around with his friendly smile and is quite welcoming, service is always on par and prices are fair. I would avoid this place on Friday night as wait tends to be longer than usual. Overall, a definite yes in Lone Tree and the little known fact is that they deliver!
Enjoy.
Some guys at work swear by this place so I decided since I was in the neighborhood, I would check it out. Â We had the seafood combo with shrimp and scallops and since both of those seafood items are so easily hit and miss, I'm glad to say that it was a hit. Â Great flavor and classic American Chinese. Â They served it to us family style which takes the edge of the bill and the servers were hopping and hustling. Â There were a few miscues on service that makes me drop them down a star, but I've got no complaints about the food.
Review Source:This is the second time I've been here and the first at lunch. First of all it was very busy however that doesn't excuse what happened.
when we arrived we told the waiter one of our party would be along in a couple minutes but we wanted to order. A couple minutes later our friend came in and waited and waited even for water. It took forever for him to get his order even when the expediter brought my soup.
I was served miso which had such a fishy taste I could barely eat it. I had ordered the baked fish off of the lunch menu and simply said "no butter". There was no other description of the baked fish on the lunch menu. What arrived was the most disgusting meal I've ever had.
The salmon was drenched and an. Orange colored mayonnaise that was horrible tasting. It was lathered on so thick that my first bite was nothing but mayonnaise. Apparently it was a sauce of some sort my friend thought it looked like thick cheese. I scraped off what came to about 1/2 cup of this so-called sauce. When I finally got to the salmon it was very dry and definitely overcooked.
When the check arrived I told the waiter that it was the worst meal I've ever had and that I had no idea it was going to be placed in mayonnaise. When he brought back my check he made a smart ass remark that the manager told him I should have looked at the description in the dinner menu. While I didn't have time to deal with immaturity and ignorance I looked it up on the online menu and there was no description of the baked salmon on that either.
Our friend that arrived late never got his soup until after he completely finished his meal. Well his basil chicken was good my other friends sushi was not very good.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to rank this a zero star restaurant and will concede to one star only because when I had pad Thai here at night I had a great experience.
Based on the managers supposed that comment I simply won't return.
When my wife and I want sushi, this is where we go (usually for lunch). We've never been for dinner but we've been countless times for lunch. We've never been disappointed. Along with the sushi, the Pork Spring Rolls are fantastic. Some of the best I've ever had. I also really like the pork fried rice and anything from the tempura portion of the menu. Like I've said, we've tried many things on the menu and have never walked away regretting it. Wonderful service, nice atmosphere and the prices (at least during lunch) are not too bad. I'd certainly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys sushi.
Review Source:Here is a spot that fills that void between "$1.35 scoop or buffet" chinese, and overpriced ok chinese food from PF Changs.
I go here for lunch like everyone else in this area, and for about $10 after tip you will have 2 meals worth of food AND IT"S GOOD.
I had the Kung Pao shrimp. Could have been spicier, but truly flavorful. Lunch came with soup and an egg roll, standard for chinese places.
I will try the Hollie's Chicken next time. Everyone else at the table got it, it is their take on sesame chicken and it was excellent.
It's about time I enjoyed chinese food again!
Very underrated sushi. The famous carpaccio roll is well deserving of its reputation.
The Asian influenced entrees are hearty, generous and well-executed. I've been to both Denver locations on several occasions and have never had a bad outing.
An ideal place for large parties, as the staff is extremely accommodating and highly attentive. I'd take JH's over frauds like PF Chang's any day of the week.
Consistent and comfortable. Â It's simply one of the most reliable restaurants in town.
IN LOVE with John Holly's Asian Cuisine in Lone Tree, CO , our new favorite sushi restaurant! Super fresh, extremely tasty and some very creative maki rolls. It has been busy each time we've gone, but never waited more than 5 minutes for a table (worth the wait!).The Chinese and Asian food looks good, but we we've never ordered it because we don't want to cheat on the sushi chef! Â P.S. the complementary super sweet fresh pineapple for desert that tastes like it has been flown in from Hawaii!
Review Source:Yes it is good as it gets! I love the "hidden" bar around the corner from the Sushi bar where you can have the entire area for yourself, watch TV and enjoy great Sushi. Take my word for it if you want to get away from the crowds and have time grab a seat at the bar and a beer, some Sushi and take your time. Heck take the afternoon off if you can as next time I plan on doing just that!
Review Source:My family has been eating here (almost) weekly since we moved to CO in '09. Yes, it is that good. Being from so Cal, I can be a snob when it comes to my raw fish. Great news: Manager Michael is pickier than me! He sources from multiple suppliers and cherry picks the best of the best. His brother, John, owns the restaurant and is also the head chef. The sushi is really top notch here.
Favorite Rolls: Brandy roll, Thunder Roll, Lollipop roll
Must have: Super White Tuna Sushi or Sashimi - It's Incredible
Chinese Food: John Holly's Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef
Become a regular and Michael will definitely take notice. He's a fantastic manager who really understands how a little customer recognition goes far when you're deciding where to eat in the neighborhood.
This place is awesome for lunch!! They have crazy good lunch specials and their meals are more than enough for one!! I always get two meals out of one lunch. Most of all the lunch specials are served with an egg rolls and your choice of miso, egg drop or sweet and sour soup. The shrimp fried rice on the lunch menu is AMAZING!!!!
Review Source:They have a diverse menu from great Chinese to sushi. Â I must say I've been going here for 4-5 years and it's always consistent. Â John Holly is frequently onsite making sure the food is good and service is good too. Â I'm almost there on 5. Â For real authentic you need to go to Aurora or Federal to get real Chinese. Â What they do they execute very well. Â In my 4-5 years there has never been a bad meal such as too greasy, too much salt etc. Â The wait staff cares about you and works to attend. Â I've done business entertaining or just lunch or dinner with the family. Â John Holly gets my vote! Â I've even had people from out of town say its awesome Chinese! Â Get the Ivy Roll if you're into sushi rolls. Â It's all good bordering on great. Â I'd say 4 working on 5!
Review Source:Ugh - what a waste of caloric intake. I'm flabbergasted that this place gets any decent reviews. Every dish we ordered was terrible, most had too much soy/salt, too little real flavor. Everything was oily. Next time I really am craving Chinese, I'll wait to visit any of the number of truly authentic places near Federal/Alameda. Or even Panda Express.
Review Source:John Holly's is like a comfortable pair of jeans.
Sure, you have uncomfortable pairs that everyone compliments (ala Sushi Den). You have really comfortable ones that have seen better days (Sonodas). And then you have the pair that never lets you down. John Holly's is my comfortable pair of jeans. They're not super flashy, but it's consistent and fresh. I really like their special rolls, too. I encourage you to try the Heartburn roll. It's a jalapeno stuffed with spicy tuna and shrimp and then deep fried. It's not...healthy.. but it's SO good.
However, the greatest thing about John Holly's is that when you've had a long day at work, dinner isn't ready, and all you want to do is crawl into to sweatpants with a glass of wine... you can CALL John Holly's and they'll DELIVER SUSHI!
I promise, it makes your day exponentially better.
My boyfriend introduced me to sushi at John Holly's years ago and ever since it has been my favorite sushi destination. Â The Grand Canyon Roll, super white tuna sashimi, and Fuji Apple Sake are staples. Â The service is courteous without being intrusive. Â The sushi is fresh, portions generous, and always delicious. Â John Holly's has the privilege of employing a truly professional Manager, Michael. Â Michael always remembers us and treats his regulars like royalty.
Review Source:I was a bit skeptical about this place because let's be real, a man named John Holly making Asian food? Seems a little off but I was willing to try it out.
We went here the other night and for a Tuesday night it was hopping in both the main dining area and at the sushi bar. For as spacious as the restaurants are, the tables were really close together and while that's a bit annoying, it's also fun at the same time because you can eavesdrop on others conversations (haha, kinda). I was craving sushi but also wanted a little more substantial so we ordered a ton of food at once-- lobster spring rolls, edamame, pepper steak and the Kimberly roll.
Enough food to feast on for awhile in proper order right? Well, almost. The timing of the food being brought out annoyed me because the apps didn't come first, the pepper steak did....then the apps....then the sushi roll. So we were just sitting there with a ton of food in front of us unsure of where to even start. The Kimberly roll was absolutely fantastic complete with salmon, avocado, asparagus with seared tuna on top. Everything that was supposed to be hot was hot, everything fresh, fresh and apparently that wasn't enough food because I ended up ordering another roll-Brandy Roll-which was brought out within a few minutes. After taking a bite of that did I truly understand the party that was going on in my mouth thanks to the spicy tuna and crab on top along with tempura flakes and scallions. Everything seemed to be at a reasonable price as well so we definitely like that.
Honestly, I wouldn't have known this place even existed had I not been in the Park Meadows area and thanks to Yelp but I will definitely head back again if I'm in the area!
Had dinner here last night. Â As always the food was great. Â When it comes to sushi we love their soft shell crab roll, but my favorite thing about this place is that not only is the sushi great but their Japanese food us top notch. Â Make sure you try the Scallop appetizer it is the best. Â They take four decent sized scallops and pan sear them then top them with a little gaucomale for $8.98.
The only the only thing that keeps this review from a 5 was our server. Â She was new so I won't mark down more than 1 star.
It doesn't matter where I go, I always end up coming back here when I want some good sushi.
Love sitting at the sushi bar and watching the masters at work, rolling delicious concoctions together. Â
Went Saturday night, and it was so busy we couldn't sit at the sushi bar (sad face), but we still managed to enjoy an incredible meal. Â I truly believe this place has it priced right and does their sashimi cuts the best in Denver. Always quality here!!
Only reason I didn't give them 5 stars, is that no one's perfect.
First time to eat here, not the best experience.
1. Price of food did not equal quality of food. Chicken was questionable. Dark meat, skin on and squishy. We ordered a crispy chicken entree.
2. California roll 8 piece done as a "hand roll" turns into a mini horn of plenty fit for a Barbie.
3. Â Delivery was super fast, which was great.
I've only eaten here once but I did enjoy it as someone who loves sushi and my friend who was eating it for the first time. Â The fish was fresh and it was presented well with full descriptions and suggestions from the staff.
We started with Spring Rolls that were both tasty and larger than expected. Â As for the rolls we sampled the Alaskan and the Scallop rolls, both were as fresh as anywhere else and certainly filling. Â I'm looking forward to trying the sushi bar during my next visit in town.
A fantastic Asian bistro. I am a real fan of their sushi--especially the sashimi. The sake is succulent and buttery and the best you'll find in the southern suburbs. Just fresh fish and so nicely prepared and presented. Â The serving size is more generous than that of many other sushi venues I've visited. Service at the sushi bar is personal and I have always enjoyed the attention.
My "don't miss selection" for sushi lovers: Lollipop roll, mixed new style sashimi, 5 Season roll. For the more adventurous eaters: Sweet raw shrimp (they preserve the heads and bring them tempura--delicious ) and spicy octopus. Â
If you're not a sushi fan, I recommend John Holly's Chicken or their pad thai. Both are a good choice. Oh and the baked salmon is very good, too.
John and Michael truly treat their guests like guests. When Michael visits your table to thank you for your patronage, you can sense his sincerity. He makes the experience whole.
I've only ever had one "issue" with a plate, and they more than made it right. You know, everyone makes a mistake...the class and grace they display while correcting a mistake is where a business makes and keeps customers.
My favorite local Asian bistro. John isn't there as much as he used to be but has figured out a formula that works whether he's there or not.
Always a great choice for date, night out with your loved one, family, friends, business lunch/dinners, etc.
I've never been disappointed. My highest rating.
I was really excited to come here after reading all of the reviews, and my friend said it was really good, but I ended up having a poor experience. I have a food allergy and I mentioned this to the waiter as I was ordering but he assured me I'd be fine to order the pad thai, we got some edamame and steamed dumplings and the dumplings were not very good. Very low quality ingredients inside, and I expected more of a restaurant setting, especially one that looks this nice.
It was almost 25 minutes after I ordered that a manager came over to inform me I couldn't have the pad thai with my food allergy so I asked what I could have, and he made a few suggestions, I told him I wanted something spicy and he assured me he could make this vietnamese dish spicy. When I got my meal about 10 mins after my friend had hers, it was basically flavorless. A light pink watery sauce covered everything and it had zero spice. By the time I was eating it I decided just to have enough so I wasn't starving and leave.
They give you this odd pineapple with powdered sugar as a dessert at the end of the meal, but that just tasted weird. I just wasn't impressed at all, I wish I had an experience more like the other reviewers!
I have been coming here since they opened and is still the place my wife and I end up ordering take out from when we don't know what to get. Â I don't think it's the best sushi in town nor is it hardcore Chinese. Â It's an Asian restaurant with very good sushi. Â As far as sushi goes, I don't think it's too expensive but fairly priced. Â My particular non-sushi favorites are the Mongolian Beef, the Black Pepper Beef, or the Udon noodles. Â For sushi, I prefer the Rainbow Rolls, Red Dragon Rolls, or the Five Seasons Rolls. Â
The staff is always friendly, and it's usually very crowded on the weekends. Â They have pretty good lunch specials, and I believe a decent bar. Â On a weekend, parking can suck in this area, but you can usually find something. Â
It's a solid sushi/Asian place and worth putting on your rotation if you live in the vicinity.
This is a large restaurant with a number of Asian food items. Â I'm usually not big on places that combine every Asian food under the sun, but I will say the crispy honey chicken was delicious with a few hot Thai chilis to balance out the sweetness. Â The chicken was good quality with great breading and fantastic crunch. Â The service, for our large table was also very good. Â
I'll definitely be back at some point. Â The prices are a bit higher as it's a bit fancier of Asian cuisine, but still a good value for the quality of the food.
I like John Holly's for lunch. Â You get a well-made, semi upscale, plate of Chinese food. Â The staff are professional, and the decor is very nice. Â The pepper beef has been my favorite dish on my visits.
I have not actually had dinner at John Holly's. Â However, having checked out the dinner menu, I doubt that I would. Â Although I believe the dinner entrees would be quite tasty, the prices make P.F. Chang's seem reasonable.
Went for a UYE lunch last week, which was my second time at John Holly's. Â They did very well accommodating our large group and even did separate checks for us all. Â
I had the Basil Beef, which was delicious! Â The beef was tender and with the jalapenos it definitely had a kick. Â It was just as good reheated for lunch the next day (the portions are large). Â Looking around the table, I'm going to have to go back to try something Yushan (think you can get a variety of meats done that way) and the Honey Chicken as they both looked fantastic.
It's wonderful having good Asian food so close to work that's so affordable.
John Holly's is a really swell place for lunch. They have a gazillion options and it's so very affordable. It's big enough for groups, casual enough for dining alone, and nice enough for business meetings. All of which are pretty cool aspects for a tech center lunch spot.
I went with a Yushan pork dish which cost me about $8 and came with soup of my choice, a vegetable spring roll, and rice. It was quite flavorful and such a big portion that I took home leftovers and had it for lunch again the next day. My only complaint was that the menu advertised it as hot and spicy, but it was not spicy to me at all. Oh well, next time I'll follow Kat's lead and order mine extra hot and sweat it out.
It's definitely a nice lunch option with good food that comes out relatively quickly and super friendly service.
I cannot offer an honest "first impression" dining experience here because it was so long ago I can't even remember! Let's just say that during my employment next door (SkyVenture Colorado), other indoor skydiving instructors and I ate at John Holly's so frequently that we were on a first name basis with almost all the folks there. I'm talking 3-4 times a week at JH and it still wasn't enough. In my opinion, this restaurant is the quintessential example of Yelp's "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" fifth-star rating. Great food, great staff, great place. Not much more to say! Simply the best kind of place to be whether you're hitting the sushi bar in need of some fresh salmon sashimi and a Sapporo or you're sharing huge Chinese dinners and a tall Asahi or three with friends.
A few things to try: Carpaccio Roll, Mango Roll, Grand Canyon Roll, Pad Thai, Purple Haze Sake and Michael's (infamous) Mojito's. Occasionally they have specials that are so good they'll ruin all other food for you forever. Anything that involves tuna, basil and jalapeños... just get it. You will not be disappointed. They will take good care of you here at John Holly's... they want you to leave full and happy so whatever you want, just ask! Chances are they might be able to whip you up something special, especially if you've been there before. To John, Michael & all the friendly folks that work there: thanks for helping to make several years of working next door one of the tastiest times of my sushi life so far.
Its the MEMORIAL DAY long weekend FRIDAY, MAY 27th 2011... Made a reservation for my foodie group, thru http://meetup.com. Â There were 12 of us. Â Thankfully, when I arrived for the dinner, our seats are ready for us. Â Time for the dinner was 1830hrs. Â I was there early as usual @ 18:00hrs. Â We were seated at the extended building, of the left wing of the building. Â Man, since its the MEMORIAL DAY long weekend, this establishment is indeed jam packed.
My group is divided into 2. Â Coz one group that is in my group prefers to have FAMILY STYLE Dining... in which I prefer. Â While the rest opt of individual dining aka ON YOUR OWN FREE WILL Dining options etc etc.
So this review is based mainly on the FAMILY STYLE DINING.
Our waitstaff was an Asian male. Â Pardon me, I cant recall his name. Â Lucikly he managed us, since I am quite picky about what to have for Family Style Dining. Â To note, this is NOT in the menu. OPT FOR THE SPECIAL MENU. Â So feel free to ask your waitstaff, on what they have in their kitchen, so they can whip up their culinary delights for family style dining.
From what we had if I could recall properly were :
* Â Tofu Hot Pot with Seafood
* Â Green Vegetables with Garlic, if I am not mistaken, this dish is more like the Kang Kong vegetables that I am used to back in Singapore.
* Â Fish with their Special Sauce
* Â Beef with Mushrooms
* Â A Pork dish, that I did not taste so I cant review that.
Since its a Memorial Day weekend, the place is packed, so I can understand the long wait say like 30 minutes after our order to arrive. Â Yes to some, this may not be acceptable. Â But the WAIT is worth the WAIT for my personal observation.
All the food they provide us, was flavorful. Â I like the fish dish the best. Â To console myself, since I cant taste the pork dish, I opt for Uni and Spicy Octopus nigiris. Â I like both of the Nigiri's I order.
Why the 4 STARS? Â Okies, since the waitstaff promised me, he wont bring in any PORK dish to my table, he did. Â Though he apologized to me personally, but at least he could compensate with another dish for the family style dining.
Another pet peeve, though I think there were some misunderstanding with my other frens at the other table with the other waitstaff, the service was slow for them, what nots. Â Some like the choice of food they had, some did not. Â Oh well, you cant pleased everyone, right?
To end our dinner, the waitstaff presents us the "pineapple boats", in which I forgot to take any pictures of those. Â Note to self, that evening, should ask for the receipt, in which I forgot.. then I PAY WAY too much, on which I should not. Â Ohh, well... perhaps that evening I was feeling "Generous"...
3.75 STARS since I am feeling "Generous".... and I push it to 4 STARS...
To return, YES, but definitely not in a hurry.
I was skeptical at first. But then the food started coming out and I couldn't believe my eyes.. Lobster smothered in chili, steamed fish in a delicate sauce, claypot with fried tofu.
Best Chinese food in Colorado, hands down.
That said, I've eaten here there times and have never eaten anything off the menu.. except the sushi, which I found to be good quality and well made. None of this non-sushi rice or tough fish you get at other denver sushi joints. For what you get, sushi or chinese, the price is fantastic.
This is now the only place that can satisfy my cravings for Chinese, I'll make the drive out to Lone Tree any day
