The only thing I wish is that this place took reservations because it can get packed on weekends. Other than that this is a great local steak house. It's not exactly up scale, but everything is extremely tasty. The meat and potatoes sort of people won't be dissatisfied and certainly won't be hungry.
Oh! And even if you aren't a dessert person, saved room or at least bring home a piece of their cheese cake. It's sooooo yummy!
Wow! I actually like a chain restaurant, What I am smokin  Big portions great prices and really good food. Go with the marinated skirt steak (yummy almost fork tender and not overly  marinated ) or the baby back ribs(fall off the bone not drenched in BBQ sauce, and  better than most so called BBQ places I've  been to.)Even the  Calamari Rings where actually quite tasty and tender. I've been to Steakhouses where I have paid up to $50.00 for a Rib-eye or porterhouse and  served by some dude in a Bow tie with the personality of a douche  and haven't enjoyed it as much as the $15.00 steak  at J&Rs.
Review Source:So the prison warden says to the prisoners, "Boys I have two pieces of news for you some bad and some good. Â Bad news is all we have for dinner is gruel. Good news is we have plenty of it!". Â
That's about reflects my feeling about J&R.  No matter when I go or what I get its always just food. Nothing ever stands out, nothing ever completely flops. On this run I had a surprisingly good chili. I wasn't expecting very much from this and when I saw the spray cheese on top my expectations sunk even lower. But overall it was decent.  A hearty mix of beans, beef and some pieces of steak in a thick sauce serves with enough chips to practically scoop out all of the chili without using the spoon. Even the sour cream topping was cold giving a nice balance to the plate.  After a couple of bites you forgot the spray cheese was even there  (this is aided by the fact that spray cheese is not known for its strong flavor).
I pass on the cold noodle salad every time, they could be serving me the same bowl over and over as far as I know. Â The pickles are usually good though. Â My steak was the 26 OZ porterhouse. Â Nice from a size standpoint but not a outstanding cut of meat. Â I tried the marinated version this time. Â IMO the marinade is sickly sweet. Â One of the few times I have left any steak on the plate. Â My wife's JR steak was much better. Â Another positive note was the onion straws. Â A huge plate with a nice dipping sauce. Â to much for me and my wife to finish together.
So we will be back to J&R because for a steak dinner with the kids the price is reasonable. Â But I'll stay away from the marinade. Â When we don't have the kids we'll head to any one of another 4 star steak places around town.
If  you're in Riverhead and lookin for steak...well you've got yourself J&Rs right on 25.  Just a few mns from the outlets.
Good amount of parking and a pretty large place. Â There's a lounge dining area and the main dining. Â If you walk in a see a bar and people sitting and staring, you've entered the lounge...just head to the left to the hostess (whoops!).
Main area has high ceilings and kinda barn style. Â This place is super casual and made for large groups. Â Bring an appetite and know the priciest steak is probably $24 (porterhouse). Â And yes, you get what you pay for.
Service is very friendly and food comes out fast (we were here after 9pm on a Monday so not sure how good that gauge is). Â Steaks come with either soup or salad and choice of potato and the veggie of the day. Â Before your meal comes you'll get your drinks, bread/butter, pasta salad (all i could taste was raw onions but fiance loved it) and pickles.
*8 oz Prime Rib w. salad, baked sweet potato and steamed squash julienne'd: Prime rib was juicy but had chew (not exactly melt in your mouth variety) although it was still nice to mop up the au jus they poured over the plate. Â The crisp edges had good flavor. Â 8 oz was perfect portion for me. Â Asked for medium rare but it came out more med/med well but was still tender. Â Baked sweet potato wasnt all that sweet which is what i was lookin for but the veggies were good. Â Salad to start was chopped iceberg/tomato/radish/carrots/purple cabbage w. ranch and was a nice simple start.
*Marinated Porterhouse: fiance opted for this since he wanted a bone-in steak. Â The marinade sounded interested so he opted for that. Â Also ordered medium rare and his actually was. Â Steak was very tender but the beef taste was different than other steakhouses.
We were pretty much full so no dessert for us. Â The specials board did have some interesting choices on it...but doubt we'll be back here unless we're in the area shopping and have to get dinner quick. Â I think from when we entered til we left was like 40 mns. Â Super fast but we were not rushed at all. Â Everything was just that fast and yes we practically inhaled our food. Â Late dinner after a day at work then outlet shopping :p
All in all it was ok for me.  As fiance said "you get what you pay for" and yes you do.  Good value for portion size ($39 for 2 of us and that includes tax & tip).  And oh ya, he loved their steak sauce which every table has  a bottle of.
So cheap and so good.
I think this is better than Texas Roadhouse. But Texas Roadhouse has better bread.
I had the T bone medium rare. Amazing. Cooked to perfection.
My friends had the filet and it was also cooked perfectly. Full of flavor. Possibly better than my T bone but I enjoyed my meal.
Large portions. They charge $10 for sharing an entree. So expect leftovers!
too bad that this place is hours away from where i live, or else i would be abusing happy hour (all day: 11am-7pm) and the lunch specials everyday!! no wonder everyone there seemed a lil overweight.. half off all drinks and a whole lunch, including soup/salad and dessert.. you can't explain that O.O
maybe it's me. i'm not used to those kind of deals up here. i visited the place twice. the first time was when we decided to find a spot to eat after being denied to skydive by mother nature. and the second time was after we successfully jumped out of a plane!
i think they have these good deals bc the place is out in the middle of nowhere. sounds like i'm exaggerating, but i'm really not. i'm pretty sure that everyone must know each other over there lol
decor was pretty good. they had that wild, wild west theme going on. very fitting. there's a lounge-y section with tvs and a bar and a more family oriented section for larger parties.
the steak sauce really lives up to its name. i don't know what their special formula is, but it def has a lot of heart in it... i think that's what it is.. :O
i'm tellin you, if you happen to visit this area bc of the skydiving airport down the street then pass by before/after and eat like a king/queen for less than $20, including a few drinkz ;)
Had a late lunch here on Wednesday 8/8 after a round of golf at Calverton Links. The food here is cheap and the wait staff young. When I entered most of the wait staff was loitering around the hostess' podium. Food here is on par with the prices(think diner) there were mostly seniors doing early bird dinners at 3:30pm when I was there, I ordered the 16oz T-Bone marinated medium well, my husband ordered a Julie's Black Angus medium rare. His burger came well done, mine was as I ordered it.He took two bites of his burger and gave up, ended up eating half of my steak which tasted great. The marinade was soy sauce based I'm thinking teriyaki. After awhile it does get kind of salty. It would be great if they lighten up the sauce a bit. I would definetly go back for the steak 16oz at $15.99. Now the reason for 3 stars instead of 4, the wait staff... they were not shorthanded the place was less than half full and had a waitstaff of about 7 not including the 3 busboy/food servers. It took more than 10 minutes b4 our waitress Katie showed up(did I mention they loitered around the hostess' podium?) Took our drink order, 1 Hofbrau draft at $7.50 which  was almost as much as the Julie burger at $8.99 with a glass of ice (my husband did not get, had to ask the busboy who didn't understand? and didn't call for our waitress) and 1 soda, we also gave our order at the same time knew what to order bc we sat there 10 mins with our menu. The onion straws were really nicely fried the sauce not too good will ask for ranch dressing next time. Husband asked for cup of ice  after we flagged down waitress when she was at next table collecting her tip. She didn't apologized for forgetting the ice. Now the strange part was the waitstaff only took orders and money, but the busboy/ servers did most of the work and they worked hard and was very quick.I observed that as soon a table vacated they came right away and cleaned up. And they served the food. I've never seen busboys serve food b4. My husband mentioned that our food was served by the busboys so said maybe he was doing our waitress (who was pretty) a favor. But nope the busboys were also servers. I do hope that they share the tips.Or at least for the owners to recognize  how hard they work and pay them more. At least that's what I observed durng my hour lunch there, the waitstaff only too orders. Regulars correct me if I am wrong.
Review Source:I've never been here without having to wait for a table, which is a testament to either the quality of the food, the size of the portions or both.
The plastic cactus decor should be removed and brought to some western themed mini golf course !
When you sit down, the waiter brings a bowl of pasta salad and pickles and a loaf of warm brown bread and butter. The pasta salad is a bit under-seasoned for my taste, but after the wait in the lobby, we all dug in.
Order the crispy onion straws, but ask for them "extra-crispy", otherwise they are a bit limp (nothing worse than a limp straw).
The steaks are cooked to tender perfection. When ordering you get a choice of marinated or non-marinated. I've had both in the past and I feel that the marinade is a bit too salty for my palate and tended to overpower the other flavors of the rest of the meal.
The cheesecake is creamy an delicious, but the pecan pie was disappointing.
This is not a high end steak house, but for under $20, you get a good meal and decent portions and a comfortable down home feeling.
Enjoy !!!
Bunkhouse setting for okay BBQ. Review is based on 5-10 visits. Last visited in December, 2011.
Atmosphere      75   (cowboy land in Suffolk county)
Service          80   (always on target)
Food            75   (we keep going back so it must not be bad)
Value            80   (always tasty, always plentiful, no surprises)
Not many eateries in the area make this a number one choice - if you are in the area.
One thing I do love about staying over my girl's parent's house for a visit now and then is they usually take us to J&R's Steak House out in Calverton, LI. It's one of pop's favorite places, and is one of those spots that is made for one thing and one thing only -
GOREGASM!!!
Good god! The amount of food you get here is ridiculous for the price. I guess living in NYC we are so used to over paying for everything that J&R's seems to be a terrific bargain. Plus, the food is actually pretty good. Just good old fashioned "stick to your ribs" comfort style food served up in large portions at a reasonable price point. Daily specials on their chalkboard are a good deal too.
On the day we came here during Christmas week I wanted to do the 76 ounce steak challenge, but it was not being offered anymore. Something about not enough people doing it, so it was removed.
What kind of world are we living in when real Manly-Men don't want to take on the challenge of engorging on a huge slab of meat?!!! Oh, the shame! Do it for valor. Do it for love of God and country! Do it for AMERICA!!!!
Alas, I had to settle for a 24 ounce marinated t-bone steak. It was one of the specials of the day where it came with shrimp scampi, soup/salad, and two sides. I think total price was a silly amount of around $20! Still, this was a pretty big, and juicy slab of beef. Prepared just right with a nice pinkness in the middle, and a tasty marinade. This was hefty! Adorned with succulent shrimp, baked sweet potato, green beans, and delicious lobster bisque soup. Also, pumpernickel bread and pasta salad with pickles are placed on your table. This is a lot of freaking food!
Another thing I love here is that there is a large bar area to sit around - and they serve up Hofbrau beer on tap at all times! Yes - love me some German beer! We came here on this day during happy hour, which is all day by the way, and I had two mugs of awesome beer to wash down my meal with. Yes, I did fall asleep in the car on the way home after all this. Good thing I was not driving.
Hey, it's no upscale steak house, or authentic Texas BBQ joint, but it is solid food with great prices in a fun cozy atmosphere. If you are one of those stuffy poo-poo type diners then skip it and go elsewhere. Seems like you are sitting in a road house decor. Service has always been fine by me, and the quality of the food is quite acceptable. A big plus is that it is very easy on the wallet! Check it out if ever way out east on LI.
Quick service kind of place that's great for families - especially if you have young kids and need to move fast.
Food is ok, and certainly good value. I ordered the T-bone special, marinaded and med. rare. Probably not a good choice. Steak was served up well done, and I found the marinade to be an overly sweet teriyaki type flavor. Next time I will go with a non-marinaded rib eye and return it if it's over cooked. This time I had Cranky kids and needed to eat and go.
I'm from Texas and happened to stop by this joint because I was starving and the parking lot was full (which means yummy food)
I ordered the 12 oz steak for $14.99 which came with veggies, mashed potatoes and I ordered a side of chili. The sides were bland, but the steak was pretty great. I highly recommend you get the steak marinated.
Sadly, the food doesn't compare to Texas BBQ hence the 3 stars.
I've been numerous times and I'm never dissappointed. I was suprised recently with the nachos as an appetizer. IT WAS AMAZING!!!. There wasn't a dry chip on the platter, tons of chili, cheese, salsa, sour cream and the portion was huge. I prefer the Calverton location if I had to choose, there is a very cool country vibe there.
Review Source:This is the chain's newest property in on Montauk Highway in Islip, NY. Â Formerly the Seascape, Â this JR's has some big shoes to fill.
Frank Gillespie ran a tight ship for about 40 years on this sight. Â Now it has fallen to a 17$ chop house with bad to fair food and very mediocre to bad service.
On July 20th wednesday, 2011, Â at about 6:30 pm, we were a party of four. Â The place wasn't 1/3 occupied. Â
The little man inside told me there were going to be problems when my wife ordered tonic water and limes and then got just lemons in water. Â That should have been the tip off and right there and then, we should have just dropped a couple of bucks on the table and left.
Instead, we ordered supper. Â I had the broiled seafood combo, consisting of; a piece of swordfish, salmon, and some shrimp. Â The sword was overcooked like wood, the shrimp were a close second, but the salmon and the creamed spinach were OK. Â The Mrs. had steak thumbits and shrimp combo. Â Meat was very overdone for medium and her shrimp were rubbery also. Â Our guests said their steaks were OK.
I did not complain because it would've caused a bad scene and embarassment to my guests whom originally reccomended the joint.
I will not ever go back again. Â The service is very poor. Â The food runners harrie you thropugh the meal and auction the food at table side because they have no communication or system with the ordering waiter who we hardly saw all night. Â The food is bad to mediocre. Â They may fool the folks out on the eastern ends of LI, but here on the South Shore, especially in this tougher economic climate, they have to play their "A" game or suffer he consequences.
Loved the free appetizers: (bread, pickles and pasta salad)
Loved the 24 oz J&R steak: $19.99-comes with soup/salad and 1 side of your choice: (the lobster bisque which came with this meal was so hearty! Sweet potato fries were good as well!)
Loved the BBQ combo (ribs, chicken and 5 fried shrimps): $14.99 Â Ribs were marinated very well. Chicken breast was a bit dry but edible. It was marinated with their BBQ sauce.. Â
What more can I say? They open til 11/12 at night. They have friendly staff. Happy hour specials, early bird specials, and senior citizen discounts! Affordable comfort style food!
Meal: Very good.
Service: Horrible.
The details:
On July 4th, the boyfriend and I walked in and were given a table. Not going to exaggerate, there was no service after that. We talked and waited a good amount of time before I had to stand up and walk to the front desk and ask where our waiter is.
It turns out that there was no one assigned to our table. Someone finally arrived to take our order. Unfortunately, there were no July 4th specials. The food arrived in time. Both of us ordered the Monday special, 24oz Med Rare marinated house steaks. The meal was great. However, again, there was no more service after the meal was delivered. No one came to check up on us or our drinks. Any other JR steakhouse would notice when you're done with your plate and take your plate away and ask  how the meal was and also giving you the chance to ask for the bill.
Sadly, we sat with our empty plates and empty glasses and I had to flag down someone else's waitress for the bill.
I assume the service was so bad because of the holidays but it was unacceptable. We felt ignored and unwelcome. Even though the meal was delicious, I would not sit down and eat there again.
I shared a lot of memories with the J&R's located in Stony Brook. As a poor SBU student, eating at J&R's was a life saver! It was one of a few first places where I ate off campus as a freshman and where I ate my last meal after graduation. So yesterday after my first skydiving experience, my friends and I wanted to celebrate by eating a fat steak for cheap because everyone knows how expensive jumping out of a plane can be. Â Lobster bisque and mussels with garlic bread should be on everyone's appetizer list. I usually get the double cut marinated Romanian skirt steak which also comes with bread, soup or salad, today's veggies and one side order for under $20. The marinate can be a little sweet for some but I personally have to get it this way when I'm here. I must've been out of my mind that day and I got the au jus prime rib with garlic mushrooms for $9.99.. I should have ordered my usual or any grilled meat but you can't complain for the price. J&R's (maybe not this one depending on your location) is worth the mini road trip for good affordable steak!
Review Source:Love this place ... the lobster bisque soup is great !
Our waitress who I think her name is Amanda was great from the moment we sat down till we got the check .. she brought things without even asking and my husband said he thinks subs reads minds lol
Even though everytime we go there is a 45 minute wait I think its worth it ... I was scared that $14 for filet mignon I was going to get a not so good piece of meat however it was so tender and cooked perfect, also the marinade made it even more tasty ..
Oh yes I just travel 20 miles to go to this JR's Steak house.
I ordered the Rib Eye 24oz Med-rare marinated and it came out soooo freaking gooooood. I usually order the Porterhouse steak but this rib eye was amazing.
My usual Jr's Steak house is located in Stony Brook but I ventured off and tried this one.
We also order the mussels in red sauce. The mussels are so good and fresh. The Sauce is good not great.
For me and the wife it cost us 55 with tip for 2 amazing steaks, app, sodas, and tip. Not to bad. Plus we have leftovers for tomorrow.
Great deal better than the Stony Brook location.
I took my parents, fiance, best friend, and best-friends boyfriend to J&R on Saturday night. Parking isn't the easiest of experiences here, as a large gravel lot that's not all that well lit made it tough to walk (thank goodness for moonlight). The wait was only about 15 minutes long at 7:30 PM - a huge surprise to us all. We sat comfortably in the waiting area.
We were seated at a round 6-topper in the corner of the restaurant. Ambiance was fabulous, with a rustic, deep wooden feel with softer lighting throughout with a hint of seasonality by evergreen garland and LED xmas lights. A bit loud inside, which isn't all too bad for the crew we were with. However, I did feel like my family "put baby in the corner" as I was pratically pinned to a corner.
Our waitress, Jennifer, wrote her name on the paper tablecloth and promptly took our drink order. Wine was OK, not all that fabulous, and I barely was able to see what kind of Cabarnet I ordered. I don't think that they supplied much Long Island varietal wines, or at least they didn't highlight that at the table. Nothing goes better with steak than a fabulous glass of red, but not wine pairing suggestions could be found on the table, or Jennifer didn't suggest.
Our dinners all came bundled with a salad, a rarity in this day and age. My mother's fish of the day dish also came with a dessert. Nice to see that they can still create a pairing like that.
I ordered the 7 oz marinated filet mignon with a side sweet potato and a starter house salad with Italian dressing. Salad was OK, filet mignon was delish, and sweet potato wasn't cooked as thoroughly as it could have been. Also, my steak came out with a toothpick in the middle of it, which from what I learned in the restaurant industry as a teenager, you should always remove the temperature gauges and picks in steaks. Although I devoured it all, I have to say...I've had better.
Here's the kicker, literally. My mother, who claims to be one of the most MSG sensitive people in the world, wanted to ask for no MSG but forgot. She insists that they included MSG on her fish because that night she literally kicked my father in a restless sleep. Moral of the story - all those people who are MSG sensitive may want to request no MSG at J&R for fear of night sweats, restless sleep, and vivid dreams.
Three stars seems appropriate for J&R for pretty tasty food, good ambiance, attentive service, and relatively inexpensive prices for a steakhouse.
Had the surf & turf today and was blown away by how awesome the lobster tail was. Â I'm almost always disappointed whenever I order lobster tails at a restaurant bc it's either over or undercooked and lacks flavor. Â This was on right on the money. Â The steak was great as usual, it's no Bobby Vans but it is what it is. Â They have the best creamed spinach around and kids eat free Mon-Thurs! Â Very kid friendly as it's a very loud and casual atmosphere so you don't feel so bad when your kid is yelling and throwing stuff bc nobody seems to care or notice. Â Always a bonus when there's a diaper changing station in the ladies room - score! Â Our waiter, Jay, was friendly and attentive. Â J&R has always been a treat for my family for a cheap yummy steak on a special occasion.
Review Source:Amazing deal!
J&R's Steak House is a must-visit joint whenever I'm out in Riverhead for Tanger Outlets. What better way to top off your day of high quality shopping on the cheap than with high quality food on the cheap?
If you choose to be seated in the bar/lounge area, there's a perpetual 35 cent wing special as well. That's $3.50 for 10 wings. Yeah, that's a pretty good deal.
If you know me at all, you'll know that I almost always have to go for the rib eye steak. Well J&R's does not disappoint! For merely $17.99, I got a 24oz ribeye steak, a soup, a vegetable, and a side. And that's one of the pricier entrees!
As a steak purist, I tend to skip the marinated steaks. For my taste, the marinade is a bit too sweet and not tart enough. Needs more Worcestershire sauce.
Mention-worthy sides are creamed spinach, sweet potato fries, and garlic mash. Lobster bisque is more of a crab bisque but damn it's good.
Excellent lunch and dinner specials and a happy hour that runs all day long. Â Lots of value for the dollar, unless I'm extremely hungry I usually wind up taking half of my meal home. Â The steaks and barbecue are very good. Â If you're there for lunch the Yankee Pot Roast lunch special is fantastic. Â Expect a long wait on Friday and Saturday nights.
Review Source:GOREGASM.
Good food & great value. Hofbrau on tap doesn't hurt either. Nice interior and a large space that always seems packed but there's space. Wait staff is typically friendly but someone always seems to drop something to the delight of gawking guests; maybe it's a calculated sacrifice.
Most recently: Slammed on a Saturday post-graduation rush, our beeper didn't work, twice. Once called, we were seated in a table too small for its patrons. The Southwestern decor is surprisingly not too offensive and slightly charming. Our waitress wrote her name and a special? (both illegible) on the paper tablecloth. There was no normal pasta side salad/pickles to start? The warm pumpernickle dipped well but we received agitated service by our waitress. Everything else was pleasant, venue-wise, aside from a papercloth cut.
We all got the lunch specials...I went with the stuffed filet of flounder with mac & cheese & lobster bisque on a sweltering day. (We chose The Texas chili cheese fries -- subpar even when lathered -- to start with an e-coupon comp'ing them) We forged forward to tack on just $1.99 for respectable dessert & coffee. Apparently the normal choice of plain-or-marinated was never offered to the carnivores, to their dismay, as drier and less flavorful steaks than to what they were accustomed arrived in front of them.
Join their e-club for an instant coupon to use day-of or within 30 days and to get a special treat on/around your birthday. Keep an eye on local news sources for hard coupons too, complementing omnipresent daily specials.
Meat.
Wow- this is my second J&R location to hit - I knew of one other but apparently there are 5. Â
For the meat lover out there, this is meat nirvana (meat-vana?) They have a huge selection of steaks / chops / ribs / chicken and all the fixins that go along with that.
The prices are dirt CHEAP but you are getting damn good grub for the ridiculous low prices. Â For instance, I started off with a bowl of mussels in a garlic wine sauce for $6.99. Â Ha! Â There were enough mussels there for 4 people. Â $6.99 - I'm still chuckling!
The place is located along a desolate stretch of highway across from the Calverton airfield- I don't think they use it much these days since Grumman moved away. Â Parking is in a hodgepodge of dirt lots - a pickup truck might be handy here on a winter day.
The place is much larger than it looks from the outside but beware, they get PACKED out real fast with people waiting up to an hour and a half for their steaks. Â We hit the bar and chowed down as we watched the games. Â Since we went around 4 pm, we were lucky to get two seats.
Great bartenders, loads of great food and cheap prices - what the hell more could you ask for? Â Oh - maybe to be like 40 miles closer to my house! Â That would be sweet!
Yum Yum! Check this place out for sure. Â 10 oz Filet Mignon for $12.99 unbelievable. Â I have been to the fanciest steak house to the cheapest steakhouse, and this is an incredible deal for your money!! Their marinade is A+ , their garlic mashed potatos are delicious. Â I took 1 star away because sometimes people I have with have gotten the same cut of meat and had completely different reviews because one got a good cut and one got a bad cut. Â My only complaint : they have a table tucked away in the corner for the employees to eat, so most of the time when you are sitting around waiting for your waiter for way too long, he is indulging himself in good food and conversation with his colleagues.
