Here is a bar that is barely making it because for the Flint area Mediocrity is accepted as above average. This bar used to be packed on the weekends and had a steady regular crowd. Now weekends are a bit busy and during the week it's pretty much dead! WHY?
JW's is billed as a 364 day a year Karaoke Bar. Which has decided that their KJ's (Karaoke Jock) work too hard. So now every hour on the hour they break the Karaoke rotation so that the "Invisible Dancers" can dance.
One might think that they are attempting to please all people as best they can. So if you came in to sing and have been sitting there through 2 rounds of the "Invisible Dancers" and still haven't sang. You're not really excited about even being there or coming back anytime soon. Now if you say anything to the Bar Owner. He'll tell ya "I'm trying to run a business." Taking this remark into consideration let's look at what he's doing to run the business? And what direction he is running it. If you have customers that want to dance or have asked to dance that's where a good KJ would slide in some dance music at the top of the Karaoke Rotation! NOT HERE! Â
Now as he is sitting there at his "Chair" with his "Manager" at the bar. Instead of having customers sitting at the bar spending money! He's tying up space from paying customers. Now what are they doing at the bar? Are they watching their staff? are they paying attention to the customers? NOPE! I came in with a friend and having to go to the bar in order to get our drinks. I'm only pleased with the fact that I didn't have to leave a tip since I spent the whole evening almost three hours going to the bar to get my own drinks! If you're running a BAR shouldn't you actually pay attention to what is going on in it? What's he care as long as he get's his turn at singing. Yes it's true. He will sing in his bar before his customers get a chance to! And doesn't see a problem since it's his bar!
But I can understand why that is so difficult to watch in this bar. Since the lighting in here stinks. I find more and more people are bringing flash lights or are using their Iphone apps to be able to see. What good does it do to have a Karaoke song list if you cannot read it at the table, or for that matter. They have put little letter sized triangle paper ad's on the tables. Don't ask me what's on them. Not enough light to even read it.
Now for a Bar that's business revolves around Karaoke they don't seem to understand why people come out to sing? Many different reasons. But, mainly it's to be the star of the show for that 3 - 5 minutes that you're up there singing. Â So one would think they have the most attentive KJ's and Sound mixers working to make sure you sound like a rock star when you're up on stage. NOT HERE! Main qualification to be a JW's KJ is work cheap! You don't have to have an ear for sound You don't have to have any sense of urgency to get the next singer up and singing so that the show keeps moving along. I've timed average transition times. This place takes the longest of any bar in flint averaging a minute and a half to announce the the next singer and get them up there. It's not rocket science but if the owner is too busy running his business I can see there is no sense of urgency to keep the evening moving along so people don't get bored. Also, the KJ can't even hear what it sounds like in the room. They have them in a sealed off area where they can't hear. And having a 4 inch speaker in a side room doesn't give you the effect of what it sounds like out in the bar!
Believe it or not they actually have food. Typical Bar food nothing special. But you have to ask for a menu. (hell that could be what those advertisements are on the tables that no one can see clear enough to read! But their burger is pretty good!
I can't mention all this stuff without mentioning the prices. Above average prices for the Area. If they were in Rochester Hills their prices would be average. Â But I don't understand what the problem is. But I've never been to a bar where the Draft is constantly NASTY! It's skunky, tastes like vinegar. Now it used to be that this was only Miller Light. But after one of my recent visits It was the Bud light and Budweiser. However. Â I've called the Distributor! How can any bar consistency have nasty tasting beer. Honestly, They don't care. All's they seem to care about is selling it to them. I just know if I was their distributor I'd cut them off. I'd stop in once a week to test their beer. I wouldn't mind paying their high price for Draft if it at least tastes good. But on my last visit I had the Waitress taste it. She agreed! It tasted like crap. She went back Emptied out what would probably equate to a couple pitchers just to get ONE GOOD MILLER LIGHT! Now something is wrong with their system. The first pour was warm! She noticed it before I did. I just drink I'm not selling it. If I was I'd know everything about it. Including how to keep it cold!
