Childress, Texas is severely lacking in the restaurant department. My father and I arrived into town late as we trekked cross-country. We arrived at 9:30 PM on a Tuesday night. Upon checking in to our hotel we were told our dining options were McDonald's or Kettle. We obviously opted for the latter.
The restaurant is old and run down. There is no real ambiance or theme. A few booths and tables scattered with a salad bar as a centerpiece. Entering this establishment, I was taken back at how smokey the place was even though there was a "No Smoking" sign posted and no one was smoking.
The service was nice and friendly, which is no real brainer, Southern hospitality, y'all! The food was on par with Denny's. Not the worst, nowhere near the best, but palatable.
What that did well and was suggested by another Yelper, was their pies. I devoured their pecan pie as soon as it hit the table. I definitely recommend it.
This place is nothing to write home about, but I'd recommend eating here than at McDonald's.
This place is so smoky! There is a door separating the smoking area and the non-smoking area but it doesn't accomplish much. I hate tasting cigarette smoke while trying to enjoy a meal. And it certainly isn't pleasant for those of us with asthma.
There are always flies in here year round. I haven't seen a fly in a few months, that is until I went inside the Kettle.
So why 2 stars? Because they are open when no one else is in this tiny restaurant-deprived town. They are there for you 24 hours a day. And for that, I grant them 2 stars. I know what to expect when I go there, but at least I can expect them to be open.
I hear their pies are good but haven't tried that yet.
