I wanted to love this place. I did! An Irish pub on the north shore is like fiding a unicorn.....But unfortunately this was more like finding a donkey's ass.
The food is NOT PALATABLE. This isn't "oh, he just doesn't like pub fare" comment. I love pub fare, but this stuff isn't edible. They asked how we would like our burgers cooked and we should of just said as black and hard as a hockey puck because that's how they came out regardless of our orders. The waiter was HORRIBLE. He had to come back several times because he kept forgetting our drink orders (because a pint of Guinness and a Bud Light is so unusual), forgetting silverware, our food orders and seemed to spend more time texting on his phone than giving a crap about us on a TUESDAY night?!?!
Also, could someone tell me why the men's room is written in Englisn and the women's room in Irish? If you're gonna be a paddy trap get it together.
I Â gave this place two stars only because the onion rings really are the best rings I've ever had and they serve the large bottles of Magner's Irish Cider which are rare.
So, come here only on a week night and only order beers and onion rings.
We went here to use a Groupon(which my husband says he sees every so often for this place). Â We got a salad, fish and chips, and a sandwich(sorry it's been a while, don't remember the type). Â The Cobb salad was good, the chicken was cooked well and was moist and flavorful. Â It missing blue cheese but it was fine without it. Â The fish and chips were disappointing. Â The fish tasted rubbery and oily but the french fries were good and crispy. Â I thought my husband's sandwich was probably the best(I want to say it was either pastrami or corned beef). Â The beer selection outweighed the food. Â The place was a little small, but it made for cosy conversation with my husband over beers. Â It wasn't packed when we went and the waitress had to come back after a minute taking our order to ask again what it was(mmm, off day?). Â Overall okay, might just come here for beers and shareable appetizer. Â Prices are reasonable and portions are generous.
Review Source:hey kitty's.....we live in America...If you have a drivers license from another state ,,,you should have served these people....If you served them and then decided not to,,,shame on you ! Â you could have called the cops and had them check there licenses. Â like the guy said, you are bucking tourists.......turning away people who pay salaries etc.....not sure why that yelp popped up on the guy who you turned away with friends did,,,but it left an impression with me that I will not support your pace.
Review Source:I grew up in Beverly. I live in Somerville now so it's still easy to frequently return to the North Shore for a weekend with friends or family. In any case, one time I brought a group of friends here. Mixed crew - a reunion of sorts, but several people live in NY now so they have New York ID's. Not only would Kitty's not serve them, but they asked that our entire party leave the bar after we finished our first beer. Some of the New York guys already had been served a beer, while others were denied. Regardless, we all HAD to leave. I asked what they hell they do when tourists stop in for a pint from out of state? Surely with Montserrat and Endicott nearby they must cater to all kinds of ID's. Guess a good ol' American drivers license doesn't cut it at this place, gotta be a straight up MA ID. Took our wallets up the street to some other place anyway and had a good night. With Cabot street seemingly getting more and more quality stuff popping up (really enjoyed Barrel House recently), I can't find a reason to duck into Kitty's anyway. Kind of a last resort.
Review Source:Do not eat here!!!!! I am a Beverly local, been here 5 or 6 times, ever time something is wrong.
Last night with a group, I ordered Buffalo Tenders, came out extremly raw. the watress said she couldn't belive it. when the new order came back, they were extra over cooked and not buffalo anymore, just breaded. It took so long it end up coming with the meal, so our meal got cold while eating the appitizer.
This is the 5 or 6 time I eaten there and will never again. This was the 3rd time I got absolutly no beef in the beef stew, it was all bread from the bread bowl and a few potatos. The stew taste good, but its just broth.
I was there with six people. Every single beer was warm and lipsick all over wine glasses. The waitress had no knowlege about any of the 3 beers we asked about and seems upset we asked. When the waitress greeted us, she even told us she was tried because she was there all day.
We were charged for the raw chicken appitizer, even though it was brought with the main meal and raw! When we all payed and left a tip, she came back to the table saying it wasn't enought when infact there was plently plus tip even though all the problems.
NEVER ORDER FOOD or you might get sick.
I have lived in Ireland. I have been in Irish pubs, eaten Irish food and enjoyed Irish culture.
That said, I have been to Kitty's more than I should, simply because it really reminds me of home. The food is amazing (Guinness beef stew, curry fries!), the space is cozy and inviting. They have a few TVs, but there aren't glaring. You can play darts if you so wish.
Kitty's is cute in that its decor is very fun/sarcastic/Guinness related. I love it. Drinks are great, atmosphere is lively and they have live music. It gets crazy cramped in there at night, so go in the daytime if you dislike the crowds.
4.5 stars, really. Comfortable and clean pub interior with a couple of large flat screens. Great pours of Guinness. My meal of a mixed green salad with steak tips was delicious with more steak than expected. The prices were very good. Fast, open Wifi. What's not to like? If they knock two dollars off a pint of Guinness, I'll give the place 5 stars!
Review Source:The decor is wonderful! Does look like an Irish bar. Ordered a classic Reuben. Thats when disappointment set in. The fries were under cooked and cold (maybe oil wasn't hot enough?). The sandwich was likewise. Cheese not melted and a piece that fell out was actually stale. The corned beef itself was very tasty and if the sandwich had been cooked properly (actually grill it so it gets warm folks). Then this would of been a nice meal. The problem was all in the cooking. And a grilled sandwich and fries isn't fine dining so time to review the basics back in the kitchen. Now I did see someone else get the stew and it looked really good. Think Ill give the place another try, but will peek in to make sure its a different cook in the kitchen!
Review Source:Kitty O'Shea's has pub trivia and typical pub food. The food is mediocre and the prices are a little above average for the area. The service is terrible, so don't plan on smiles and a refill on your drink in a reasonable amount of time. The bartender is incredibly rude, so I'd suggest sitting at a table. Overall, not recommended. The bar is on Cabot Street in Beverly which has a lot more to offer.
Review Source:Kitty's is not the bar you want to go to on a Friday or Saturday night. I agree that it's small and gets very crowded, and if there's a band, it's impossible to hear anything. I don't think it's quite the high school reunion that you find at the Pickled Onion every night, though.
Kitty's is perfect for a weekend afternoon or early evening. The beer selections are varied enough to appeal to everyone (I'm a big Sam Summer or Blueberry fan), and the bartenders are great.
My boyfriend and I are regulars, and the bartenders know exactly what we want and where we'll sit when we come in. That time of day has a nice mix of Irishmen watching soccer matches and other regulars coming in for lunch or for a drink.
The deck is really nice in the summer time, and if you do go at night, it's a good place to escape the crowds. I also have to applaud the bathrooms which are ALWAYS clean, and, for a bar, SO NICE.
I see a lot of complaints on here about the food, and I'll echo others when I say it's bar food and you get what you pay for. If you want something nice and greasy to coat your stomach for heavy drinking, you're in luck. The beef stew is EXCELLENT and I've known men who can't stomach the buffalo sauce -- so good! Also, they have the best onion rings I have ever had.
Another perk to Kitty's is that they have a Kitty's Card which saves you $10 for every $100 you spend at the bar. Points accumulate over time, and I won't tell you how much money I've saved with the card - it's embarrassing how often we're down there.
Extra points because this place was open during a snow storm. We walked down and got a seat at the bar.
The beef stew was delicious. Very thick gravy in a bread bowl. French onion soup was ok. Too much beef broth. Â Â Caesar Salad was ok. Taco special not so great.
Good beer selection. Black and tan was a bit too heavy on the tan. Cocktails were good- not a martini place but ok for a vodka soda or something like that.
Fun atmosphere- live music and fireplace. Very typical pub here.
3 stars
Small and not as authentic as its press would suggest.
In colder months, the ambiance is discounted by it being too crowded and too loud. Â On the nights when there is a live performance, it loses its intimacy. Â
The patrons vary: too often a young (even under-aged) college crowd establishes a foothold on the establishment. Â At other times, the "pub" strives to be too ethnic.
On the whole, Kitty O'Shea's "Irish" Pub is too pretentious and too expensive for what one gets out of the entire experience. Â The pub food is average and predictable; the food is good but nothing is remarkable. OK selection of imported brews.
For novelty, try out one of Beverly's Indian, Thai, or Mexican restaurants.
Ok so here's the thing about kitty's I love his place! I love the staff and all the locals. I however don't love the HORRIBLE loudmouth 21 year old meatheads/bimbos that tend to congregate there on karaoke nights and on sat. I have a deep love of this bar and have been going there for at least 11 years now but can not stand when a tipsy loudmouth orange skinned girl is screaming and taking pictures with all her other whit-less bimbo friends. Please, please if this sounds like you just go down the street to the onion you will just be ending up there in the end! If you are a true adult Wed night has one of the best local bands and the bartender ROCKS!!
Review Source:Kitty O'Shea's is by no means a fancy or even classy locale. Â It is an Irish Pub that is a popular hangout for local professionals and professional bar flies. Â Beers will run you $2-$5, depending on your taste (I'm a fan of the blueberry myself).
It's a tiny place that is surprisingly well-suited for groups (have been there with a group of 8+ that fit just fine- tables are easily moved).
Service is great- very friendly. Â Pretty attentive.
Food is mediocre and a bit overpriced for being so mediocre. Â This is a bar, so I'm not expecting great things, but I also don't want to pay huge prices for it.
Bathrooms are well-maintained and big.
Parking can be an issue.
Overall, this place is just fine for a beer or two on a Friday afternoon with friends. Â It's a staple and as such, it will keep me coming back.
I really wanted to like this place. Â I grew up in Beverly and many moons back, as I ventured towards my 21st birthday, I remember thinking that it would be cool to make that place my bar. Â Unforunately, everyone else had the same idea.
I've tried and tried and tried with this place over the years. Â It was completely intolerable when smoking used to be allowed in bars, now it is just a hair above being completely intolerable. Â Too small of a bar, nowhere to sit, everyone just milling around the small open area that exists as a route from the front door to the back.
Beer selection is pretty decent, but nothing mindblowing. Â Always loved the Bellhaven on tap. Â The Guinness, and this is what a faux Irish pub should be known for, always comes out sour. Â I've tried to drink a Guinness there on several occassions for the better part of this decade and each time I have been served a sour pint. Â Gross.
I have never been there for food or outside of the night time hours, so take my review with a giant grain of salt. Â On the rare occasions I have snagged some seating, it hasn't been a bad time. Â I withhold hope that someday I might actually venture in there during daylight hours and enjoy a pint or twelve along with some food and friends. Â Maybe that will change my stance on the place.
I just moved into this neighborhood and have found myself here twice so far for a quick meal and a drink. Â Both times I have been in here it has been practically empty, but I was there at odd times, so I won't judge it based on it's value as a happening scene. Â The three stars are for food and drink only.
The food is average pub food. Â On my first visit I had the monte cristo sandwich served with "a delicious dipping sauce". Â I think the secret sauce was just parmesean peppercorn salad dressing, which I liked, but what happened to dipping a monte cristo in maple syrup? Â It's a sandwich on French toast! Â It begs to be dunked in sugary maple goodness. Â Moving on, the fries were pretty standard and came unsalted. Â Not that that's a terrible thing, but I like my fries salty and if you wait too long to put some on, that lovely glistening frialator grease that helps the salt stick has somehow retreated to the interior of the fry, leaving the crisp outer shell salt repellent.
On visit number two I tried the Irish rueben and curry fries. Â I never thought of curry as an Irish thing, but I've seen it at several Irish pubs and liked it each time. Â The sauce here had a nice taste to it, but I wish it were thicker, more like ketchup, for dipping. Â
Overall, both meals earn three stars. Â I'm still a little on the fence about the drinks. Â This seems to be a very beer-centric place, but they do offer a full bar, although with limited selections. Â I did see some higher end vodka and tequila, though, so you can get your Patron shot or Ketel One martini if you desire. Â I ordered a vodka tonic and got a pint glass sized drink. Â Thinking "damn, they pour a big ol' drink here" I sipped it and it was pretty weak. Â Then again, it wasn't that expensive either, so you get what you pay for. Â I'm looking forward to coming back here sometime when it's a little busier and seeing what the nighttime vibe is like. Â If it turns out this is a fun place to hang out on a Friday night, it may have four stars in its future.
Despite how unbelievable tiny this joint is, I still adore it. Â Most nights it would be packed with Beverly locals and/or college students. Â I attended Endicott just down the road from Kitty's, and so it was a hot spot on the weekends.
The best nights are the ones where you can see a live band, share some nachos, and chill with your friends, but those are the busiest. Â The Klapp, a band that included some of my Endicott classmates, played Kitty's frequently and always put on a good show.
Most nights they have some sort of drink and/or shot special posted on the chalk board. Â They have a small (wicked small) patio that you can hardly get to thanks to the wall-to-wall bros blocking the way. Â The best nights to go are earlier in the week when it's just you, your brew, and a few locals chillin' at the bar.
Kitty's is a weird place. Not in a bad way though, but in a "I'm torn between loving it and hating it"
I tend to avoid it at night when it's rowdy because it's mainly filled to the brim. It's also rather small and claustrophobic. Also, don't expect to eat on busy nights as someone might be standing on that table you're eyeing... or a band or DJ will be using the front door and two front tables as their stage.
Best pint of Guinness in this country though. I've drank from the tap at St James and Kitty's is the closest thing to it. They keep the lines clean, they turn over the kegs frequently and the mix is always set right. Only problem is traversing the wall of people to get to the bar to place your order. (It's REALLY small)
Now, while I tend to avoid it at night, I LOVE going during the day. The food is rather good. Very authentic Irish food (read: sometimes a bit greasy) but it's an Irish pub, don't expect truffle oil and crushed pepper at the table. The menu is small, but everything is well executed. There's almost always a good match on the TV. I prefer going during Rugby season personally.
The hidden jewel of Kitty's is Sunday Breakfast (served until about 1pm I believe). Now, one thing you need to know about the Irish... Breakfast means a very particular thing. There are a few choices at Kitty's but the only 'Breakfast' is called 'Full Irish Breakfast'. If you ever visit Ireland, just order 'breakfast' and you'll get round about the same thing. Two eggs (your choice, but over easy is the best way), sausages, rashers (effectively thick bacon, kinda ham-like. you can get it in the US as 'back bacon'), black and white pudding (don't ask, just eat it... then google it when you get home), beans, fries (the only thing non-authentic, it should be fried potato slices) and buttered toast.
Everyone eats breakfast a bit differently. I prefer to make the largest mess I can on the plate using the eggs and beans... then you use all the non-messy items to wipe it up and eat leaving the toast for last.
Is it the best Irish Breakfast, no... but it's the only one around here I know of. And it's cheaper then buying the ingredients yourself.
Also, check the cream before you pour it in your tea. We've had a few spoiled cups of cream in the past.
i don't think i'm  21-years-old enough to like this place. i'm not from beverly but i'm told it's a total high school reunion every weekend night. you can't move around in here on a weekend night. once we went in for a friend's birthday with about 8 people and had to turn around immediately because we literally could not get past the entryway. we went to the press box instead and really classed it up.
decent cheap beer list, though.
Huh. I live within walking distance, and it took me a year and a half to try it. Â
Since I went in on Friday afternoon after Thanksgiving, there was no crowd. A friend and I sat at the bar and ordered up Harp Lagers, which came crisp and cold in clean glasses. I liked the decor; it felt more Irish than the Pickled Onion down the hill.
We watched the Bruins and ordered food. I had an "Irish" Reuben that had plenty of good lean corned beef, and the friend had a burger. He ordered curry sauce, which we shared.
Another friend arrived and had a Bushmill's shot to catch up. We'd  spent about two hours there when we began to get cell-phone calls from the women, back from Boston.
I don't know about the crowded Friday and Saturday nights, but I'll be back--and soon.
small, dark, nice bartenders, GREAT selection of on-tap beer, smoking on the back deck. Â The food is awful. Â We stopped going here because it's loud and crowded and dangerous. Â By dangerous I mean once you go in you usually don't come out until closing time. Â Hangover city and that will be $100+ please!
Review Source:I just moved to the area and really wanted to try this place. I thought the environment was very neat and the beer menu was impressive. The food was just okay and my friend ordered the Shepard's Pie and it was very obvious the fat wasn't drained from the beef. Half of the dish was swimming in ground beef fat!
But what do you expect I guess when you order shepard's pie at a bar? So overall, I'd definitely come back again.
Ohh and it was cool they had live music... one guy playing the guitar I liked that.
I'm sure the days have changed since my goings here, but Thursday Karaoke was my shit. There is a good following here that helps make a great atmosphere. Many of my friends have since become regulars, creating bonds with the town people and friendships with the bartenders... Kitty's is an easy place to settle into, if I stayed in Beverly I would have surely done the same.
There was, maybe still is, a vegan bartender, John, who helped me find out what I could and could not drink.
I thank and curse him for taking Jagermeister from me.
I spent a lot of time here my senior year of college so like most Montserrat students I have a soft spot for this bar. Â I admit, the rating I'm giving it is probably inflated just because of the nostalgia factor.
The atmosphere is  a lot cozier than any of the bars I go to in Boston now and the food and drinks are more reasonably priced.
Ideal place for a burger and a beer in the afternoon.
I love this place - only 4 stars because the food is just passable and the service can get nonexistent on busy nights - mostly just because of understaffing I think - the waitstaff always seems super nice and hard working.
My friends and I affectionately call this Shitty Okays.. . .the food is shitty, but the beer is OK!!! The Guinness is great, the atmosphere is great, the aesthetics are great - very nice and authentic. No bull. Just don't expect snap your fingers service or gourmet grub. It is a great local watering hole.
I used to live across the street from here. Â I think I've spent more time at Kitty's than at that apartment. Â However...i like a nice cold Newcastle draft. Â they do have Newcastle, but its never cold enough. Â Sometimes it tastes like the tap hasn't been cleaned in a while. Â But, that is the only negative of this place. Â it is cozy, and the Irish bartenders and waitresses are so great. Â The pub food is ok...If you want some cheap fried munchies get the appetizer combo and a basket of fries. Â Or if you're into a hearty Irish pub meal, order the Shepard's Pie.
Review Source:i have given this establishment plenty of my money since turning 21, and I am ok with that.
Great place to go after work with decent food beer beer beer and big tv's. Â the porch is an added bonus in the summer time for the smokers- and for us that dont, it is still nice. Â i remember a big dog hanging out with the drunks on this porch most nights. Â i wonder where he is now?
i consider this a beverly hot spot.
I usually go to a place more than once before I review it but these days I'm not drinking and driving as much so....
I liked this place a lot. Good beer selection, friendly Montserrat students and locals, cozy place with a great atmosphere!
I only wish I lived up this way, or it lived by me.
Kitty's is a good hometown time. I was there last night for karaoke and it was out of control! It's like everyone in the North Shore area flocked to karaoke night, I'm telling you, it was packed! But I had a great time, the karaoke lady was quite nice and gave everyone their turns (no karaoke Nazis here) and even with such a packed bar, the vibe was super fun (ya know, sometimes a packed bar is hell, especially in sandals, but this was not) I've come by other nights to find a super chill environment and personable bartenders (often Irish lads and lasses). If you went to Beverly High School you're bound to see a few alumni there, I always recognize many faces, not so much names, but definitely faces. Yes, as I said, Kitty's is a good hometown time.
Review Source:Small, little hole in the wall place...I was there on a saturday night I think, and they had a live band which was neat. There was a wide variety of people there. There was a bachelorette party (not so sure I'd want my friends taking me there for such a big event, but to each there own), some drunk souls trying to dance (but mainly swaying), a few older couples enjoying a drink at the bar, and some 20 somethings. Overall, a nice environment for a chill night out.
Review Source:Having been to Ireland, finding a true, authentic Irish pub is great. Every bartender I have encountered has been Irish, and the atmosphere is definitely authentic Irish. The food is good for pub grub and the beer selection (both on tab and bottled) is great. It's a good, neighborhood pub.
