This place was great! Who ever the guy was that wrote the review stating in his first few lines how the clear soup was not right. This guy was stupid. They didn't have a Caucasian manager either.
Take it from me. I am not form this area and on travel from California will say this sushi was great. The service was great. You wont be disappointed.
They would of gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for the music blasting in my ears and having to repeat myself and asking the chef what did you say?He did turn it down so we can talk easier.
This place is fantastic! I've been searching for a good sushi place in the area since I moved here and I FINALLY found it!
I've never actually eaten AT Kyushu but I regularly order delivery and take it. No disappointments!
My recent favorites are the crazy tuna roll and the white pearl, SO DELICIOUS! My good ole fav (spicy tuna) is also so very fresh and yummy!! The staff has also been very very friendly. My new favorite spot!
Went here for take out. Ordered 2 clear soups, gyozas, "rock shrimp" tempura (misrepresentation since they are actually overcooked prefrozen baby shrimp)a salmon and a tuna roll.
Upon entering I was very impressed with what seemed like a very trendy interior, a mix of NYC lounge and trendy sushi joint.
But unfortunately that is where the trendiness ended, because unlike the crowd at most trendy lounges in NYC the crowd here s what u expect from your typical corner bar up here in Garfield/Wallington lol. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I like your typical jersey dive bar as much as the next man. Lol it just seems like an ironic contradiction lol
On to the food. . . It was not good.
I honestly think, the 4 stars this place is averaging is a misleading quite generous stretch. When considering the number of stars an establishment has, they should consider the number of 4 star reviews that were written by ppl with less then 6 reviews.
Kyushu is far from anything special and has awful customer service.
The salmon wasn't a good cut, It seemed to have seen better days and those days have long past..... it was void of any decent fat lines and it had an unappetizing dryness to it, the nori was equally as dry to the point it was causing the roll to come apart. The sushi rice was either stale or it was not completely cooked through, it had a very unappetizing texture to it. The salmon was of sub par quality, so much so that after one bite I had to put it down.
The maguro was no better. It seriously should not be classified maguro, simply based on the lack of quality and the fish being borderline supermarket quality fish. Again with this roll the rice and nori were equally as unappetizing. It was like if they took the scrappings of the tuna and threw it together, as the tuna was chopped into oblivion.
The food was awful to the point that I bagged everything back up and drove ten minutes back to return this atrocity.
I figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was an off day.
I found the customer service that I received was quite unbecoming and for better or less words quite rude.
The general manager, a Caucasian man, was very rude and condescending. He argued with me, that I must not know good quality sushi and that I must be utterly nuts to say the food did not taste good and the sushi did not taste right.
I thought that was funny, since I spend thousands of dollars yearly at some of the best sushi places around the country; from Nobu, Morimoto, Oiishi in Boston, Sagami in SNJ and in my opinion the best sushi in NJ at Sakura Bana in Ridgewood..
The sushi chef then put in his two cents in and in a huff stated that he prepared sushi at some of the best restaurants in NYC.
They seemed insulted when I pointed out that the supposed "rock shrimp" were in fact soggy frozen baby shrimp.
I wanted to give these guys another shot, but after the rude treatment from both the GM and the sushi chef I have written this establishment off.
Hopefully they ownership reexam their management options, bc the current staffs attitude is robbing the owners blind with their aloof knowledge in Japanese food and non existent customer service.
My two cents, if you want high quality extremely fresh sushi skip this place and drive 15 minutes north to Sakura Bana in Ridgewood!!
Tried this place tonight on a groupon deal, and for once I was not disappointed! The service was great! Waitresses were passing by offer refilling cups and were very polite and amiable.
We started with the rock shrimp with was loaded with flavor! A little zing and spice but sweet from there orange zest! A must try!
We had two traditional rolls, a spicy salmon and spicy tuna. Both rolls were good. Held together while dragged through soy and spicy mayo! We also ordered two specialty rolls, the Hudson and the fushion. Both packed with flavor and different from any roll I've had before.
If anything is to be said about this place, it's that the food is super fresh, the music and ambiance is great and the overall experience is pleasant. A definite must try! Will be back!
Bland sushi - I did not think it was possible for a roll containing a unique mix of ingredients to be so lackluster. Everything we ate there (also using the Groupon) was pretty in presentation, but completely lacking in flavor! The service was eh, made worse by annoying women taking lots of pictures while being loud and flirting with the bartender. I usually leave sushi joints with a smile on my face, but I left here wishing for an empty stomach so that I could go elsewhere and eat good sushi. Despite it being close to home, I will not go back.
Review Source:Like others, we checked this place out on a Sunday for a late lunch taking advantage of a Groupon offer. We really enjoyed our meal.  The entire restaurant, especially the bar area, looks great.  Casual and not stuffy feeling.  Service was excellent.  We started with a seaweed salad, which was very good.  We chose the calamari as our appetizer.  Came out hot and delicious.  All of the sushi rolls were fresh and looked great plated.  They are not stingy with the pieces of fish here.  Hubby also had a pork katsu, which was very good.  Our only small complaint was the sake  It just tasted cheap.  Still, if we are in the area, we both agreed we'd definitely come back.
Review Source:Eh....Very nice décor...slow service, went there with a groupon, it included a small bottle of sake...Honestly the worse I ever tasted, now if you're trying to impress people and get more business through groupon, why give cheap sake? I don't care about the prices, give me good food!
All was good except the one roll, I don't remember the name, but it was the most expensive on the menu I believe it was $18.00 made with tuna, tuna was chopped and really soft, I didn't care much about it, everything else was good...oh and if you ask for a spicy mayo they will charge you a dollar...might go back if I'm in the area, but won't go out of my way to go there.
We watched a really great documentary on a Sushi Chef from Japan called "Jiro Dreams Of Sushi". The movie is about a master sushi chef from Japan. Watch the movie, it's incredible. But the flick also put us in the mood for some Sushi and we went back to Kyushu Sushi and we are glad we did...
The owner as well as all the people who work there are accommodating and very service oriented. Good people.
We sat near the sushi bar and the chef looks at me and recommended the Aji appitizer. I said sure, why not. We never had the dish and were curious about how it was going to be prepared. The Aji came out and it was a work of art and it even tasted better than it looked. He made an Aji roll from the fish as well as a nice slice of Aji Shashimi in a tasty sauce. He also deep-fried the fish after filleting it. The chef said taste the bones. He was right. We picked at it like a chicken and it was so flavorful. We wiped the fish clean  I have attached a picture of this dish prior to dismantling...
We then ordered the sushi and shashimi for two. It was an incredible selection of fish including Toro (fatty tuna), lean tuna and white tuna shashimi as well as a nice selection of sushi and rolls. The quality was really really good as were the flavors of the fish. It was worth the money.
The place also has a nice bar with TV's if your in the mood to watch some sports and have a few beers or cocktails.
If you want really great sushi and great service, go to Kyushu and have some fun.
I was excited to see a new sushi lounge and was hoping to try some delicious dishes based on their menu. Â Buuuut it fell kind of short.. who makes FROZEN fried calamari? Â I felt like I was eating from a hospital cafeteria.. Â sushi was average and the pork and chicken katsu was a little on the bland side. Â The greatest part of the meal was the fried ice cream... The other sushi places in the immediate area may not have the same trendy ambience but have better quality food.
Review Source:It is very good especially considering the location. Yeah the bartender is cute but you really should come for the food. I am a sushi connoisseur so I know my raw fish. This is about as good as you can get without going to NYC to a really expensive restaurant. Go for the food and enjoy the eye candy.
Review Source:Went in on a groupon deal over Christmas break with my brother, so I can't comment on their pricing, but the food was excellent in terms of both presentations and deliciousness. Â I highly recommend the sushi pizza with tuna, and (as always) to sit at the sushi bar in the back. Â That's where the show is and you can chat with the chef.
Review Source:I bought a Groupon deal for this place and went there with my sister couple days ago. Â They were very friendly and most importantly, their sushi was pretty good as well. Â I tried their green tea fried ice cream which looked pretty and were pretty amazing as well :)
The only thing that caught me was the price...I mean I know sushi is pricey, but if it hadn't been the Groupon deal, I don't think the meal that we got was worth the whole 60 bucks...but like I said, I got it off of Groupon so it was a pretty good deal there :)
Came here with a GROUPON that we had bought, but it turned out that I was 3 days late on using it and when I asked if they would honor it anyways, the "Manager/Owner" said "no" flat out. That kind of put a damper on the experience, but I can judge honestly about the meal.
We wound up getting 1 Cold Entree & 1 Hot Entree instead of the "Groupon Deal" then.... Â The cold entree was a trio of Spicy Sushi (Tuna, Yellow Tail & Salmon). The sushi tasted fresh and it was quite delicious and flavorful, with sesame seeds around on the outside of it, which I loved. But, I couldn't taste the difference Between the three different types of fish, it all tasted the same....
The Hot dish was the Yaki Udon Noodles with Shrimp, and that was a complete disappointment. It had no flavor at all - literally, the shrimp tasted like it was boiled in water with no seasoning put on it at all. I could've prepared that dish better at home.... All the guy had to do, was add a little soy sauce or teriyaki sauce or just salt and pepper alone, to make it taste a little bit better. The only thing that I did like about it was that it had shredded cabbage, which I always love in Asian dishes. The portion was tiny and it cost $18 - definitely not worth the money!!!
The bar is a nice addition and the drinks are reasonably priced (I had a small carafe of Hot Sake for just $5) but, that's the only good thing that I would say about this place.
Oh, and the waitress was friendly, she was pretty nice & quite attentive to our needs.... But there were only 2 other tables of customers in the place.....so how hard is that?? She was really sweet though & it seemed like she felt bad about us not being able to use the Groupon that we had bought. I tipped her over 20%.
The lunch special prices look really high & expensive as well, so I'm not sure if this place is worth going to at all, unless you want to get some drinks at the bar and split some sushi.
Hi Funny Charming Bartender! (I told him I would write a review of the food instead of the hot blonde bartender)
Atmosphere: Very bright and lively. They had pop music on and it added to the lively atmosphere. The place was decorated with christmas and holiday decor and it really made things sparkle and shine. I really liked the modern and glittery yet cozy atmosphere. (see pics)
You don't often see a separate bar in a sushi place with a sushi bar already. I imagined people in the area can stop by here for drinks and quick sushi bites instead of only coming for sit down sushi meals. It's a nice touch.
Food: we got a few rolls and they were all quite delicious.
- Shrimp Shumai: appetizer was yummy, as usual.
- Shrimp tempura: different from ones I've had. This one had lettuce, avocado and cucumber in it as well as the shrimp. It was very good--considering even filled with more veggies than other ST I've had. Nice a thick-good deal.
- East Rutherford-it had eel, salmon, spicy tuna and avocado. Very great mixture and soft and delicious.
- Dynamite: spicy scallops with wasabi cavier and white tuna on top. This was a unique roll...never had something like this. I was hesitant to try the wasabi cavier because I'm not a spicy wasabi person but it turned out to be really tasty. It just gave a small kick, not too much and it definitely added to the flavor of the roll itself.
- Spicy yellow tail-nothing special but good.
Overall, I really enjoyed this place. They add little touches like they give you a wet nap to wipe your hands at the beginning of your meal. The wait staff were all very nice and friendly. This was definitely a cool place to be with its nice decor. I recommend it!
I had a Groupon coupon and brought my sister with me to try this place. I'm not sure why everyone rated this place so high. To me it was just average. Service was fine at the beginning, the host and server were nice and courteous. However, after we finished our meal, we felt like we were rushed out of there. They took the bill, and then just basically ignored us. No one said anything as we stood up and walked out. No thank you, no good bye...
As for the food, it's all right. Nothing great about it. Maybe it's good in the Wallington area. I'm not from there so I don't know what other options there are in Wallington for sushi. However, I will not be going back there again.....
Their decor is nice, maybe that's why people like the place? It might be a nice dating place as it is dark in there. If you are going for the romantic vibe maybe give this place a try. I've had better sushi elsewhere though.....
Found this place through Groupon and saw great reviews here, so we decided to check it out. Â It seemed like everyone around us was there with the Groupon as well. Â :)
First impressions, smells yummy. Â Nice bar right up front and the sushi bar in the back. Â With the Groupon, we got a small sake, any appetizer, 1 special roll and 2 regular rolls. Â We took full advantage and tried a few other things, starting with the saketini....very good. Â Next, we had the yellowtail appetizer, and some rolls. Â All very tasty, fresh and not over-the-top crazy (some sushi places try too hard to shove everything but the kitchen sink into every roll). Â Pleasant service. Â Would definitely go back.
Love this place and eat here about once a week. Really good Lunch special deals. Â Has a NYC sushi lounge feel right here in Bergen County! Â Have been there for the "Sushi After Dark" events which are a real treat! Â Drink specials & sushi specials with a fantastic DJ turn this daytime eatery into a night time hotspot with a little dance floor and delicious food. Â You won't be disappointed.
Review Source:I'm so happy my brother found this place. Â I have not tried the food yet, but Sonia the bartender is extremely talented. Â Her palate is exceptionally sophisticated, which means she makes amazing drinks. Â It also means she won't be there too much longer, so I would recommend going asap. Â A true gem to experience in Jersey. Â You can't beat top-mixologist skills at neighborhood prices.
Review Source:Very hot blonde bartender... with a very sexy accent but not overbearing... extremely friendly and personable.
Oh, the food is delicious too. Â If you enjoy tuna tar tar or spicy tuna, you absolutely need to try the sushi pizza with tuna, it is amazing. Â It easily trumps the other local sushi places, like Akasaka, where I can never been very happy after any visit, or Nizi, which is cheap but just terrible.
I visited the restaurant on a Saturday night. Â It wasn't too busy. Â The food was good but the portions are extremely small. Â If I didn't have a Groupon, I would have been very upset to pay for their prices considering the lack of food. Â I asked the waitress what seasonal beers they had in stock, and she did not know. Â She told me to walk over to the bar and ask the bartender. Â Not a good look. Â I walked over to the waitress at one point to make sure that she got my order right, the owner walks infront me and asks me if he can help me. Â Not knowing he was the owner, I replyed "No." Â He loudly replies to me "Well, I am the owner". Â Overall, I highly doubt I will be returning there. Â I did not enjoy the atmosphere, not to mention the table next to us was talking loud and cursing.
Review Source:I found Kyushu through groupon. $61 worth of sushi and sake for only $10? I think so! I took my boyfriend and it was absolutely worth it.
This is the best sushi I've ever had. Get the Wallington roll and the rock shrimp. Their flavor combos are unique, and some of the rolls use really interesting ingredients (like jalapeno caviar). But if you wanna stick to spicy tuna or your normal go-to, they have that too. They have the potential to be on the pricey side depending on what you get. I found that the regular rolls you could find at any sushi place were priced fairly. The presentation was was beautiful, and the only thing better than the sushi was the service. Everyone who works there is extremely attentive.
Also, the atmosphere was modern, yet still comfortable and casual.
I would highly recommend it.
i dont write reviews, ever, point-blank, period. but i felt so strongly about kyushu i created an account on yelp just to let everyone know how awesome this place is. kyushu is very very clean and has a very laid back atmosphere. the music is is good and isnt too loud and theres a full bar in front and a pretty good sake menu if you would like to try something different. never had sake? ask the waitress to recommend something and she'll gladly oblige. the entire staff is super friendly and helpful. ive only eaten here twice but the food is simply amazing! i lived in japan for 2 years and the sushi at kyushu is the best ive had outside of japan. the sushi is super fresh and the rolls actually have a good amount of fish unlike most places where its a bunch of rice and a sliver of fish. the prices are good for the quality/quantity of food u get. they also offer omakase which is a few different courses of the chefs choice and it is awesome! my fiancee and i had the omakase and ate a ton of food such as spicy tuna tartare, yellowtail sashimi with miso dressing, fluke sashimi, spicy king crab, tuna "dumplings"(tuna tartare stuffed with crab and shrimp) and a bunch of other delicious sashimi and rolls. theyve only been open for a month so most people havnt heard of them, but kyushu is now my favorite sushi restaurant around. check it out. oh, and they deliver. but id recommend actually going in to the restaurant to get the full experience.
Review Source:Upon the entrance we were greeted by a friendly hostess who was also doing a duty of a bartender.
Menu was featuring many sushi dishes which had "Jersey" in their names. I though it was quite amusing. I ordered a salad which needs a bit more work, but the ginger dressing was fresh and tasty.
I had Godzilla roll with eel, soft shell crab, avocado and spicy crunch tuna. The combination of a warm eel the rest of ingredients which were chilled had sent my taste buds high up in the sky. I highly recommend this dish and it also looked very beautiful on the plate. I do not remember the name my friend's dish, but I tried it and it was delicious too. We also had seaweed salad-larger that average portion and fresh too.
The only drawback-their menu is set in hard to read font. I left my glasses in the car and I had to go back to get them, but still, with dimmed lights it was a problem. Decor is very simple with good taste and very modern.
This is a restaurant to put on ones Favorites list.
Great atmosphere, friendly service, AMAZING food! Â My boyfriend and I go to a lot of sushi spots and are always looking for our new "regular" place as a go to that we know will always be a great time and this looks like it's exactly that. Â There's a bar which is great because most sushi places are BYOB, makes things convenient. Â There's a great selection of appetizers, this time we tried the grilled calamari which had such a great flavor and so tender, and the tuna tartare is a must have. Â The fish in the rolls and sashimi/sushi were so fresh - we really enjoyed our entire visit there. Â Great prices for amazing food, we'll definitely be back!
