I discovered this place last spring break when i as board and wanted to venture off campus a bit. Since then, i have absolutely love this place! this is the most authentic mexican food you can get in the area and not one have I been disappointed.
I come from the land of taco trucks and taquerias in california and this place would def give some of the places back home a run for their money. I love taking my friends here, but I do have to warn them that its in the middle of a convient store so they dont get scared off. Everyone I brings here loves it and it surprised that a place like this exist in WL (so am I).
There is not a lot of seating here, so if you come when its busy you might want to get it to go or be like me and sit with a stranger with an empty chair. The service isnt the best, it can be a bit slow but I am OKAY with that. They cook everything fresh when you order so that can take some time too and I am still okay with that.
I love their tamales, not the traditional ones i am used to. But a lot more moist with this almost silky mesa texture. Pazole is soooo good, especially with a torta.
The burritos are HUGE, and for $6 it beats any burrito my friends get from chipotle and qdoba (roughly about the same size-ish). This place is def a 5 star.
Authentic Mexican food. In the middle of a bustling Mexican grocery store sits La Guadalupana, one of West Lafayette's best kept secrets.
Please try something that you wouldn't normally order. The tongue tacos are fantastic, as well as the menudo. You can tell this has been made by a family adhering to the quality they would make for their family. The food takes a while because it's made to order, so make time to wait. Â
The grocery is stoked with awesome imported foods and a wide selection of beautifully kitschy prayer candles.
Great authentic Mexican food!! I am a Mexican food lover, and this is some of the best I've had. Â Walking in and heading to the back counter of a grocery store and ordering a few tacos, to be made right in front of you by the old Mexican woman who speaks no English, just seals the deal. The people are amazingly friendly as well.
Review Source:A word of warning, this place is situated in the middle of a convenience store, so if you're planning on a romantic candlelit first date you'll have to bring your own candles and ask your date to think of the atmosphere as "cozy".
That said, the food is outstanding, the waiter we had was friendly, and the employees seem genuinely happy to have you as customers.
I am fairly adventurous when it comes to eating, but I've had some bad experiences with Mexican food so I was wary of anything that wasn't Chipotle. Our waiter smiled pleasantly at my neuroses and I absolutely loved my tacos.
My boyfriend was more adventurous and also loved his meal. The meal was inexpensive, and the convenience store prices are also good.
I definitely plan on making this place a habit.
La Guadalupana is one of those restaurants that brings forth the feeling of authenticity without the irritating habit of trying too hard. The food is excellent if you love to eat meat. If you're vegetarian, you should look elsewhere unless you are satisfied with cheese and avocado quesadillas.
My personal favorite are the steak tacos with cilantro, onion and lime juice. They are absolutely delectable, and I can feel my salivary glands kicking in as I think about them. If you prefer, you can get your tacos Americanized with tomato and lettuce, but trust me, get the cilantro and onion, then squeeze some lime juice on top. The tastes are strong, but they meld into a wonderful combination. If you like hot sauce, both the green and red are an addition you should consider.
I highly suggest getting a meal from this restaurant; however, I prefer to get take-out simply because (the last I saw) the dining room is currently closed, and I don't typically like to dine in a crowded area that is surrounded by groceries.
Best Mexican food in town. Â It's located in small grocery store (my kind of place) and not only sells great things, but makes delicious food. Â I grew up near Mexico, and this is as close to authentic that I have gotten in the area. Â The salsa is fresh, the sauces always taste just slightly different because they are made fresh every day, and the whole meal is always fantastic. Â The service is good and friendly, and their green enchiladas are awesome!
They are working on expanding (and adding another location I believe) but they also do delivery and carry-out.
We went here based on the feedback here at yelp and also that my dentist is nearby. Â Nothing like getting your teeth cleaned and then having a meal to make them dirty again!
We had the steak enchiladas green. Â They were good. Â The flavors were good except I wasn't expecting the canned parm type cheese to be all over the top. Â I've never had this at a restaurant before--maybe this makes it more authentico? Â I wasn't a fan of it and tried to scrape it off but it was everywhere. Â The food was still good although while I found the salsa to be good the chips were not. Â They were thick and seemed stale.
The owner is very friendly and talkative. Â He said they are opening another restaurant where the old La Bambas was on campus--should be nice.
This place is fantastic. They're expanding to have an actual restaurant, but, as it is now, you're literally sitting in a tiny area between the kitchen and the counter, alongside the convenient store that makes up the bulk of the establishment.
The staff couldn't have been friendlier; we had three different waiters check on us frequently, and even the owner talked to us a bit and showed us the new space and spoke of his red tape difficulties.
The food was fantastic, too, and inexpensive. I even ordered off-menu and was obliged without any fuss (I wanted chorizo for my enchiladas, which was on the menu elsewhere but not for that dish).
I only take a half a star off because although I found the setting cozy, it definitely isn't for everyone (although once the restaurant seating opens up this will be resolved), and also because both of us went through some gastronomical discomfort in the hours after our meal. However, this probably has as much to do with the amount of food we were served and our determination to stuff it down because it was so damn good, so take that with a grain of salt.
As a side note, the convenient store side has all of my favorite hot sauces (Cholula, El Yucateco, Tapatio) for unbelievably cheap prices, as well as a nice selection of Jarritos. So my 4.5 stars gets rounded up to 5 for this review.
This is connected to a little grocery store of the same name. Â Both the grocery store and restaurant are my kind of place:-) Â This is the sort of place that you grab your own drink out of the cooler in the grocery store and the food is made back in the butcher/deli area of the little market.
PS.... They now deliver anywhere in West Lafayette and have a few specials on the menu each weekend (Rellenos, tamales, etc).
One sentence: Best pozole ever!
First time I had it, a friend brought it over to Chicago from Lafayette because she was worried about my cooking -- She saw that I buy mostly vegetables from grocery stores. But hey I cooked meat for her. Anyway, it was delicious! I loved it.
The second and last time I had it, I drove over to Lafayette to see my friend and consequently asked her to take me to this place because I remembered how good it was. Unfortunately we're no longer friends and so now I don't have any reason to travel that far away, not even for pozole (it would seem a little ridiculous, don't you think, to travel 2.5 hours away for some simple pozole? I'll need to find a place nearby).
So if you're in the area or nearby, go check it out! :)
