I'm with Sophia B. on the 3.5 star rating... La Milpa is pretty good, but can definitely be outdone in Denton *cough* Mazatlan *cough*. There's never been anything wrong with what I've had here, but also nothing that I've reordered regularly because it was so amazing. The Queso La Milpa (white queso) is pretty delicious, but gets a bit thick after a few minutes on the table. That didn't keep me from diving in, though! This past visit I had the combo lunch fajitas for 1, which was easily split between 2 adults with leftovers. The beef was a bit tough and chewy, so stick with chicken. They now offer all homemade corn or four tortillas, which was a nice touch. Our server, who I got the feeling may have actually been a manager, was absolutely phenomenal and took great care of our table. He kept our drinks full, quickly attended to any requests, and kept the table clean of finished plates.

It saddens me that I've never seen more than 2 or 3 tables in there at once. The location isn't doing them any favors- the restaurant is attached to a rundown Value Inn or something, but the 2 businesses are not connected and the restaurant is clean and well-decorated. For the low prices and great service, it's a great place you can have a nice sit down lunch within a work hour.

Specials: $2.00 margaritas all day Tuesday, $1 street taco Thursday (3pm-close), and a live Mariachi band Friday nights

I would give three and a half stars if I could. The food is pretty good! Fair price and good food. I've been here twice. The first time I can't remember what I ordered-- but I also got sopapillas. Yum. On the second visit I got steak picado. Very good and generous helping of steak. The service could use a little help though. The first visit was ok, kind of slow, but the manager had explained that our waiter was new. On the second visit service was slow, and not many other people dining. I don't mind waiting for good food, but me and my friends' glasses went empty.

I went here for my birthday dinner. The drinks here are more than amazing. I'd actually expect to find that quality of drinks in a classier joint, but I'm glad I had them here that night :) Our service was great. Very attentive staff and we even got a free pitcher of shots since it was my birthday. The good was good. I got the skirt steak. Very nicely spiced. I can't stand bland food and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the Scarface in New york picture in the bar, but that's about it cause the decor was ratchet!

Overall I had a good experience for my birthday. Thanks really cute bartender at  La Milpa for the birthday shots

First of all the service sucked, and the overcharged us with items we didn't buy and when I told our waiter this, and denied and said we did purchase a margarita (totally did not)... totally stole our money.
The food sucked too. The rice was bright pink I will never got back ever.

I really wish Yelp would let u give zero or negative stars because La Milpa really deserves it.

A large group of us (9 adults, 8 kids) went to this place Sunday around 1pm. Despite the restaurant being almost empty, it took a good 10 minutes to get us seated. On to ordering...some of us chose fajitas, some enchiladas. Both were a disaster...the chicken in the fajitas was more dry than an old pair of boots but at least we could eat it. The rice with all our dishes was way undercooked, the charro beans were straight from a can with a few onions and tomatoes thrown in. The enchiladas were from the freezer...how do I know?...well they couldn't even microwave them fully to room temperature because several of us had enchiladas which were frozen in the middle.

The waitress didn't see overly concerned when we bought these to her attention...she got us some more plates of rice (I guess just nuke them for another couple minutes) which were still undercooked. Seriously someone could have gotten sick from this food. Any positives?....Hmm...can't really think of any.

Please do not go to such places...there are a ton of better places in Denton like Chuys. I wish such places would just go out of business. BTW..don't let the nice food pictures on Yelp fool you...they are just from the restaurants website. The real thing didn't even look anything like that...and far from it on taste.

Went with a group of 8 (7 adults - 1 child). The margaritas were good, as in, there was actually tequila in it and you could taste it, I had to limit it to one but it was good.  Nothing special about the food, typical attempt at mexican, lots of processed cheese sauce, im not a fan of that but you can order around it. The guacamole was very good. The highlight of the night was a singing mariachi band. There must have been 7-9 people and they took turns singing.  Normally I'm a pry pooper and find this type of thing terribly annoying while I'm out trying to have dinner and conversation but this group was really good.  We even just sat and listened to a few songs before taking off.  I will go back and try it again and see if I cant find something off the menu that will increase the rating.

This is my favorite TEX MEX restaurant in Denton. My friends and I will always go to drink a margarita after being stressed out from finals. Margaritas are delicious and they come in a great size for a decent prize. They have $2 margaritas on Tuesdays. Also, I LOVE their chile rellenos and enchiladas. I currently live in Ft Worth but whenever I visit Denton, this place is my first stop.

Okay so lets start off by saying that this isn't the best Tex-Mex in Denton, but compared to many others it is above and beyond.

So the food is quite good, but there are times that the food is sub par. The economy has really hit this little place hard and between staff cuts and food quality, this great restaurant has really started to go downhill.

This place is officially gross. I came here for a defensive driving course and the place wasn't even cleaned from the night before!! There were dirty dishes everywhere, empty beer bottles on the table, crusty ass food on the floor and table... It was just vomit-worthy!! I also had the misfortune of having to eat here (it's part of DD school) and had the nachos. The chips were stale, the cheese was old, the beans were from the can. I had 2 bites and pushed my plate away.

My first impression of this place was pure disgust. If they are ok @ leaving their restaurant in a complete pig sty overnight, I can only imagine how everything else looks. ...I mean, imagine their kitchen!!!

Eat here at your own risk. You will never see me here again - even if I have to take another DSC course. Gross gross gross!!!

My husband and I have enjoyed this restaurant several time as the food has always been good. However on our last visit we ordered Patron Margaritta's. The drinks were missing the Patron. When the waitress asked and we told her she laughed at my husband. We simply asked for our bill. 25 minutes later we received our bill and the manager came by and asked. We told him the same thing and he simply said on our next visit let him know and he would make our drinks personally, no apology or anything.

Needless to say, we will not return due to the simple fact of customer service. I work in the hospitality industry and will deter others from visiting this location.

I have now been here twice, which is preferable to me (as opposed to once) when reviewing a place. I like to also check a restaurant's consistency. La Milpa provides a good example.

Our first time was very pleasant. Good salsa, great queso, and our entrees were very flavorful and plentiful. I ordered the Steak a la Mexicana. She ordered the Tamale Dinner. Service was very attentive, yet unintrusive. This, however, may have been due to us being the only table being served at the time. Overall, very pleasant find that delivered an awesome meal.

Our return visit was not as smooth as the first. There seemed to be a fewer number of employees than needed to be, which created long waits between table visits. We tried to get there early for their Happy Hour specials, and were met with a lot of "we're out of that right now". We ordered the same dishes but, while our food selections were still plentiful, they lacked the explosive flavors of our previous experience. The waiter was very apologetic about the long waits and the product outages, and even presented us with a pretty significant coupon for our next visit. Not exactly the meal experience we were hoping for, but they still were able to have us leave happy-ish.

When this place is on its game, it's some of the best Tex-Mex in Denton. When it's not, there are better options.

This place is very close to where I live, so we decided to give it a shot for lunch today. The food was very tasty, and the quantity is pretty good for the price (especially at lunch). Loved the taco salad!

The only hitch: their lunch menu promises a free soup with any eat-in lunch order from 11am to 3pm. We asked our waitress about this and at first she said no, there was no such deal. We pressed and she went back and checked.

She disappeared for a while and we were a little concerned, but then she showed up with our soups, and our meals shortly thereafter.

So all in all, a pretty positive experience.

We went in a group of four. One of our group was apparently a fan of this restaurant, but by the end of the meal she was apologizing.

The waitress was... how should I put this? a child. She didn't look like she was old enough to wait tables, and she dropped the entire tray of food on the floor. That's forgivable generally, but we had already waited a long time for the food.

The chips and salsa were unexceptional. Attention to our table was poor, especially considering the place was mostly empty.

When the food arrived we were underwhelmed and it was very late, so it was also surprising that the manager didn't offer us anything to make up for it. We didn't get it comped, nor were we offered a discount.

    Sorry, but forget this place.

After several recommendations and checking out the reviews, I found some time to stop by for lunch.  At the recommendation of the waitress, I ordered the Tacos al Carbon... and also got to sample the chicken quesadillas and the tamales.

The tacos and the quesadillas were delicious.  The juicy meats melded perfectly with the other distinct flavors in each dish.  The one miss of the meal was that the tamales were rather bland.

My friendly and helpful server claimed that the food here leans more on the side of traditional Mexican cuisine than Tex-Mex.  Being ignorant of such matters, I'll take her word for it, figuring that either way, La Milpa serves some pretty good food.

My boyfriend and I tried this a couple weeks ago and we really enjoyed it. As Jonathan G and b f. have said, the food is great. I ordered the Puffed Tacos and they were deliciousssssss. I thought they were going to be beef tacos, but no(!) brisket was hidden inside. So good! We tried their new queso recipe where they use Monterey Jack instead and that was very tasty -- spicy, but tasty.

I feel La Milpa is a great place to go if you want great food and great service.

Just ate here.  The food was great and so was the service.  On Friday nights there is a mariachi band and salsa dancing.  If you like Tex-Mex and good atmosphere, then La Milpa is for you.

I noticed that nobody else has reviewed this place, even though it's been around a while. And it's a shame, because it is actually a pretty special place.

The food is really good and unique to our area of Texas. It reminds me a lot of some of the places you find in New Mexico. They make great use of chilies, especially green chilies, and it's pretty rare to find that style of food in this area. They use green chilies in several of their dishes.

This place is also nice because it is attached to a bar (I believe the whole thing is part of a hotel). They advertise salsa dancing on certain nights of the week. I'm not really sure what that scene is like currently, but it sounds interesting. I haven't checked it out myself.

Anyway, the food is great and fairly unique, the service is great, and it really is a bit of a hidden gem.
