Horrible, and not quality Mexican food! I can get a better carne asada burrio at Mr. Petes'. The meats just sit in heated pans for god knows how long. I ordered an adobada plate which was dry as tar and tasted of chorizo!? And worst of all the tortilla chips were COVERED in grease, the bottom of the brown paper bag it comes in was completely saturated with lard. I have had better in Saccramento, multiple joints in Sac that are better then this. It's not authentic and defiantly not a hole in the wall. I will not go back. Now I will go enjoy my heartburn, while my husband enjoys a decent trip on the toilet! Don't go hear!!!!
Review Source:I've been going to La Tiendita for 20 years now. To this day,I have never had a Carne Asada burrito that even comes close to it. I will admit though, the only thing I ever order here is the carne asada burrito, so, this review is to only recommend that one item. I can never bring myself to venture from my usual order when I make the trip to SC.
The way I always describe this place to my friends is; if I were to die and God said you can only have one item/meal for eternity what do you choose? I would say "God, I choose a Carne Asada Burrito with no onions and extra cheese from La Tiendita."
This place is the best fast food Mexican restaurant for the right price,1$ burritos and quesadillas, can't argue with that, and these people actually put cheese on your burritos unlike the burritos from pedros tacos, real authentic Mexican food made in front of you so you won't feel skeptical about how they are making your food.most defenetley my first choice for Mexican food when i got less than 5 bucks.
Review Source:BARF.
I was excited to leave Long Beach, California....Their Mexican food was horrible. I arrived in San Clemente with high hopes that the Mexican food would be better. Boy was I F-ing wrong. This place has 4 stars......FOUR F-ing STARS!! WHY?!??!!??
Have you people lost your mind? Drive 20 minutes South and have yourself some real Mexican food. I mean, REAL....
F this place. It is straight up nasty folks. How dare you rate it 4 stars? I am so angry that I even tried this place out. You are all fools. Food deprived FOOLS!
Saw the Yelp raves, and had to try it. 5S to Palizada to ECR to Victoria. I parked in lot up the hill, and I'm sure the tenents there disapprove, Not sure where LaT's parking is. Place was clean, inside and out, very well organized area. Ordered 2 breakfast burritos (hoping to save one for later) as take-out, with a glass-bottle coke. Took them home, and enjoyed the first. Great $2 breakfast burrito. Tucked into half the second, as well. I cannot wait to go back for a normal sit-down meal. Prices are low, and service fast and friendly.
Review Source:Oh Tiendita...how do I love thee? Best chips on the planet. So salty and greasy they put a clear hole through the lunch bag they sit in within 10 minutes. I love this place. It's hot, dirty and even sells toilet paper incase you get the sh$%z. (the owner must be an eagle scout for being prepared!)
Great nachos, great breakfast burritos, and even greater breakfast enchilladas. The family pack meal is a SUPER deal, and the carne asada meat you can purchase raw is excellent for taking home and cooking on the grill.
Best part about this place is the Wilford Brimley looking guy at the counter. Boy he makes me laugh. He can be super short with you, needs help on the register all the time and speaks the worst spanglish imaginable to the other employees making the food. Funny as hell.
The total feel and ora of this place may turn people off but it's how down home cookin, hole in the wall mexican food should be. It's like walking into your long lost aunt Lupe's kitchen. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the place can be humid and hot. I always order take-out instead of eating in because of this. AWESOME.
This place is in the heart of San Clemente that serves not just quality but quantity. And service is fast too.
The burrito itself weighs over a pound. And adding on more rice and beans on the side is going just a bit overboard. But it doesn't matter since you'll have leftovers for dinner or lunch for the next day.
And as for the carne asada, it's nice and well seasoned.
It's not just a restaurant, but it's also a mini-grocery store too so you can get your favorite Mexican coke, or chips and salsa on the way out.
The only thing that's fast paced here is the kitchen. Everything else is relaxed and chill. A casual restaurant where people come in with their flip flops and board shorts still wet from the ocean. It's one of those places where you tell someone from the midwest about as if it was no big deal but it kind of is.
Their chile relleno was excellent and their chips are not stale but crisp and tasty. http://www.yelp.com/biz_… So their lighter and with more of a lighter hue. I am not a fan of those overly-fried, cavity breaker chips some other Mexican restaurants give out.
Their windows are all open and the ocean breezes get to flow inside just right. It's definitely a place can really feel you're on the west coast with the ocean breezes and really laid back people.
Great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant/ grocery store. They had a meat section, so guess that gets them put under that category. I got the #3 combo plate, which consisted of 3 street style tacos, rice and beans. I chose carnitas as my meat of choice. They had several options including tongue and goat meat to go along with asada, chicken and fish. I will love to go back and be a little more adventurous with my choices of meat filling. I am always down to discover great Mexican food and I think I found another keeper.
Review Source:The only way I think I could ever enjoy myself in San Clemente is if most of the people that lived there committed auto erotic suicide. Â Especially the Christians. Â As for the children of San Clemente, stop it with the heroin and the Xanax, already before you choke on your own vomit. Â There is nothing "cool" about that. Â You have not even finished High School yet. Â
Now on to this little store. Â I used to have a weekend home pretty close by this place and found myself eating here frequently. Â My neighbor was Darryl Gates. Â Imagine that. Â Two mistakes that I don't care to repeat in this life. Â While the burritos consist of a lot of food, they do not include any quality ingredients. Â For certain, Â you are going to get a football sized mass of shit wrapped in a tortilla for under $5.00 and it is going to fill you up until you can get to a town with a real Mexican restaurant (17 miles North of here in Santa Ana). Â Caution: do not order a fish burrito here. Â It is a good place to take a bunch of hungry teenagers to eat if you are sick of In n Out Burger and unable to leave this culinary/cultural wasteland. Â To be fair, the people that work here are pretty nice. Â A nice destination if you want to get into a bar fight, San Clemente is.
This is a decent and cheap Mexican food place in what is normally an expensive area of San Clemente. I had the carne asada burrito and it was ok. My gf had a wet bean and cheese burrito which she liked. Pretty good size burritos for about 4-6 bucks. We also shared a bag of freshly made tortilla chips and salsa for 3 bucks. The bag was huge. Overall, good portions and good prices. Food was just ok to me. Oh yeah and they have a small market and a butcher right there cutting meat, so if you don't want to see where your food came from, I'd sit somewhere in the corner towards the street or get it to go.
Review Source:Sadly, I've only been here once. But I can say, with confidence, that the burritos here are top-notch! And, for the amount of food you get, the price is just right. I ordered a breakfast burrito for lunch, and quite frankly, I would love to love to change the name of "breakfast burritos" to "brunch burritos." Seriously! Breakfast burritos for lunch are a great way to start my midday!
Review Source:Don't get me wrong, the folks behind the counter were super nice and friendly, and very helpful, even the Wilford Brimley-lookin' dude who manned the register.
But, as a vegetarian, I asked for frijoles de la olla (from the pot) to avoid the manteca (lard) in their refried beans, which they were all too happy to provide.. without heating them up, though. Â By the time we got home with our foil-wrapped breakfast (less than 5 minutes away), it was cold, and flavorless. Â The potatoes were flavorless. Â The rice was flavorless. Â The salsa - BOTH green and red - was largely flavorless. Â Wish it weren't so.
I had a carne asada burrito w/potatoes and a carne asada quesadilla here. Â They were pretty quick in getting it to us. Â The meat was salty and it wasn't good at all. Alertos has better food...
They do have meats in the display case which you can buy. I don't think i want to try this place ever again.
I go to bed with the vision of breakfast burritos dancing in my head. I wake up every morning craving these 1lb foil-wrapped bundles of joy -$1.99 is more than worth this incredible hangover cure! These babies are priceless...
La Tiendita!!!!!! Everyone knows how much I absolutely LOVE this hole in the wall. Better than any other market from San Clemente to Costa Mesa! The best one-stop shop for bbqs, hands down! The al pastor is TO DIE FOR! Do not forget this - marinated to perfection! The carne asada is also mmmucho bueno - and the hot carrots es muy importante taco condiment with the ideal amount of heat! They even have real Mexican coke and lots of mexican candy - Love this place!
If you're looking for fine dining you're probably better off going elsewhere, but for quick Mexican food at a great price this place is outstanding.
.
The portion size is huge, it's open late and the food is very good. Â In fact, when in a pinch for time I've pretty much used the place as my dinner meal plan for the past two years now. Highly recommend it for getting your greasy Mexican fix.
This place is bad.
I ordered the Carne Asada Burrito, and honestly, I think I would have gotten the same taste out of a tortilla filled with canned beans.
Everything is pre-made so it's not fresh, and there is a serious overload of beans and rice. I'd rather have a small burrito with some actual meat. I think I would have been better off going to freaking Chipotle.
I have read the the other reviews and with those who don't like the place - you have to remember this isn't a place for fine dinning.
This is the type of place you go if you are strapped for cash at that moment, its late, your a little tipsy, or want food with a "home cooked" flavor. That is what La Tiendita is. Ill be the first to admit when I walked in it looked shady but the food is great the portions (on certain items) are huge for cheap. I recommend the Carne Asada Nachos with everything on it (like $5 for a lot of food) or a Carne Asada or Chicken Burrito - as big as a chipotle burrito but nearly half the price.
La Tiendita.....The Little Store........Little YES, a store? well...............
So this little store is selling Mexican food and had a 4.5 average star rating, must be pretty good!. Let's see some comments from other reviewers.
"I've had just about every burrito they serve here and they're all AMAZING!"
"If you want authentic tasty Mexican food, this is the place to go."
"This is about the best mexican food you can find around.. It is so yummy, and filling!"
"The BEST MEXICAN FOOD I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!!!, Not many people have had as much Mexican food then me... so I'm SERIOUS!!!"
WOW he's serious, so let's check it out!. I ordered two tacos and a breakfast burrito since it was early morning.
Taco de Adobada - http://www.yelp.com/biz_… large chunks of meat that has little flavor, definately not cooked on a trompo, disappointing as Adobada or Pastor should be very flavorful. 2-Stars
Taco de Carne Asada - http://www.yelp.com/biz_… Not sure what cut of meat this is but definitely not any skirt steak, large chunks that are lacking in color and flavor. 1-Star
Some of the worst tacos I've had in a while....................
Breakfast Burrito Special $1.99 - http://www.yelp.com/biz_… I was surprised at this one as it's a good sized burrito for $1.99, filled with 2-eggs, beans, onions, cilantro, tomato's, guacamole and sour cream http://www.yelp.com/biz_… you can add meat for an additional cost and since they did not offer bacon I chose not to and glad I did, the burrito has good flavor, it's good sized and great price. 4-Stars
Salsa - http://www.yelp.com/biz_… was also very good!
Breakfast Burrito - 4-Stars

The BEST MEXICAN FOOD I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!!!
Not many people have had as much Mexican food then me... so I'm SERIOUS!!!
WOW!!
HEAVEN ON EARTH IS HERE AT LA TIENDITA..
AMAZING TAMALES, PERFECT TACOS, GREAT SOFT DRINKS....
NO KIDDING, THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD ANYWHERE!
STOP BY IF YOU'RE PASSING BY ON THE 5 FREEWAY.
Southern California Tradition. Every time we head down south we stop here. It is SO good!
You know you're somewhere good when the place is full and they're serving you on Styrofoam plates. Â The carnitas burrito is where my heart is. Its huge. Worthy of sharing. The regular Carnitas Plate is great too. The tacos are all good. The parents got the Huevos Rancheros thinking they were getting Machaca. Wronnnnggg. But they did still like it. Success.
Wow. Salivating right now...
Definitely hole in the wall. I stopped by to get a drink to go - jamaica with ice. After drinking the whole thing on the drive home, my tummy started to get upset about an hour later. I had a tiny bit of runs. Â
Haven't tried the food. Â But I don't recommend the drinks. Â Either the container / dispenser was not cleaned, or the ice was not clean. Â
Next time, go to El Campeon instead.
We love La Tiendita, or "Stinky's" according to the locals. My husband, a San Clemente native, has been eating there since they opened and had $0.50 tacos. Once in a while, we get food to go, but usually we go there for the marinated meat because it is tasty and cheap! Almost any time we need to make tacos for a group, we go there.
Our favorites are Pollo Asodo, Carne Asada, and Adobado, and the last time we went to buy meat (for Superbowl tacos) we bought 3 pounds of pollo, 2 pounds of adobado, and pack of mini tortillas (for street style tacos), and a macaroon for $16! We had tacos for days - so yum. Seriously. Now, you aren't getting Bristol Farms quality meat trimming, so if you have an issue with a little gristle, you probably want to trim it a little more before you cook it.
One more plus - it is a family run business and they are super friendly. We do love going there, and we wish they would open up a location in Aliso Viejo where we live. That white bread town needs some good Mexican food!
