Went here on the way back from a 20 mile ride on the Cape Cod Bike trail. Â Walked from the trail to Land Ho which is right down the street. Â
Excellent place for lunch. Â I sat at the bar on a weekend when they were slammed for service; 30 minute wait for a table! Â The bar was free so we sat there. Â The bartender was really busy but she was very attentive to us. Â
I had some very good clam chowder and the cheeseburger special had a homemade onion compote on it. Â Unexpected, nice touch, and shows that they think about the details with their food.
Good chowder, slow-ish service - not terrible, but when you go in for "just two cups of chowder" and come out an hour and a half later, it wasn't exactly the quick lunch we wanted before shopping. Â C'est la vie. Â Tasted good. Â Tater skins were very dry; Â Definitely had to have sour cream on them.
Review Source:This place is definitely looks very cool inside. It's pretty loud but that's what your going to get at a bar. I orders the special burger, I asked medium rare and it came out medium. One side was pretty crispy. Otherwise very good, I tried my friends dish which was BBQ pork and the was very good, I would recommend it.
Review Source:My wife, son and I were taking a day drive on Cape Cod and were recommended to stop at Land Ho for lunch by a friend of a friend of my son. Â It was a good recommendation. Â While the wait looked daunting (30+ minutes we were told when we arrived) only turned out to be about 20 minutes. Â
The menu is varied enough to meet anyone's taste. Â My son had the fish and chips and said it was outstanding. Â
Some have complained about the prices but you're in the middle of a tourist destination so that's to be expected.
We ate here. Had to ask the waitress twice for water. My fried clams were tender and juicy but so many french fries (all that fried food, wow) and the cole slaw was good...their clam chowder was full of clams and excellent tasting, my husband had some sort of grilled fish but he wasn't impressed with it and they had also run out of baked potatoes, daughter had some sort of fried fish too and wasn't thrilled...all in all it was ok but we probably would look around for another place to try to see if other places are better or not.
Review Source:I give it 4 stars for the food. Good quality, pub lunches and dinners. I take away 1 star for the loud, crowded conditions. However, if you enjoy being crammed together at a too small table, in a too small dining area, you may like it. And if you want to have a conversation during the peak dinner hour be prepared to yell it across the table. Finally, during the summer, be prepared to wait up to an hour to get seated, unless you go at off hours.
Like I said pretty decent food but not a dining experience for the faint of heart.
Easy to pass driving on 6A but don't. I stopped in after a long bike ride on the CCRT. I was just wanting a cold beer and some food, I was very delighted with the quality of food and good locals being friendly. Everything we ordered fried was lightly breaded as not to take the taste of seafood away and we made talk with locals very quickly. The decor was fun to look over too. Only reason it wasn't a 5 was because we sat at the end of the bar and the locals can chat a bit too loud.. no ones fault really. I actually saw the owner chatting with patrons.. keeping it personal. That was nice
Review Source:I Go to the Ho only a few times out of the Year, as with any other Bar and Restaurant.
But and this is a Big But, if, it was't, there, I know it would be a Hard, Hard, winter for a lot of People! Â As well as in the Summer, it would be Totally Missed! Â Those People, do a Public Service! Â For those, Fussy, Complaining people, Hope you stay home, and complain, or maybe even try to run your own Year round business, and see how you do! Â Let me know when you do, so I can come in and fuss, and complain! Â But please Stay Home! Â Â Â Â FIVE STARS, and Two, Thumbs-Up to the Land Ho!
This is a cozy Irish Pub style place that I have visited only twice during off peak season. Â It seems to be a local favorite and it was packed at 2:30 in the afternoon when we visited it a couple of days ago. Â We had to wait about 15 minutes and had a drink at the bar which was nice.
The seating is very tight and we were on top of the people on at least 2 sides of our table. Â We ordered the lobster roll (so so), whole belly clams (sub-par) and fish and chips (I think it was bad). Â My son and I both had stomach aches the entire evening. Â Our onion rings were forgotten and brought at the end of our meal. Â They didn't even ask us if we still wanted it. Â They brought it and charged us.
The first time I went here was a much better experience. Â I recall the food being much better. Â Above average for a bar/eatery at that time.
They get 4 stars on the cozy bar atmosphere with vintage signs and vanity license plates hung all over the place - very cool to look around and great conversation pieces, 2 stars for average service and 1 star for yuckie food. Â I'll probably give this place another shot during the off season when I stop for a beer. Â The bar is cool. Â I'll think twice before eating any seafood though....
I've had a year round place in Brewster for 17 years and of all the local places this is the most fun. Rating it on the basis of a Cape Cod Bar/Restaurant I have to give it 5 stars. I've never had a bad meal or a missed order. The staff has always been great to me and friends seem to enjoy being taken to a funky local joint with character. Yep it gets crowded in the summer at dinner time. That's good news.
Review Source:I'm actually shocked that I haven't yet reviewed Land Ho - I've been going here for as long as I can remember, and that's a pretty long time. It's a great spot and much loved by both locals and tourists alike, with a long menu of fried seafood and daily specials like grilled local tuna or seared scallops. My favorite things on the menu have always been the fried clam strips, the stuffed quahog and the kale soup - all tasty and stick-to-your-ribs kind of food.
While I remember the food being a lot better in the past, the spot itself is still a draw. The tasteful kitch of the decor is charming, and the bar is pretty great, with tons of draught beer options and any cocktail you can come up with.
Be warned, though -this place is an absolute mob scene in the summertime, and the staff get cranky. I get cranky, too because the wait is long and the quality of the food suffers. Remember to steer clear of the burgers, as the last time my mom and I split one, the beef was certainly off and it shouldn't have been served. Stick with the fried seafood and soups, and you're good to go!
This was my second visit to Land Ho! Â Pretty much the same experience both times. Â Nothing outstanding, nothing that would run me off. Â Typical Cape menu... lots of fried with fries & slaw. Â The fried oysters were nice and plump, not overly fried, and they certainly served more than I could eat. Â The fried flounder was good, too. Â Their chowder seemed to have a lot of bacon, almost over-powering the clams, so I'd pass on that next time. Â The place was busy, but the service was still fast & friendly. Â Yeah, I'd probably go back, but if Mahoney's Atlantic Bar & Grill is open, I'd go there instead. Â Definitely.
Review Source:Very busy restaurant. I was here once before in the past, I believe I got the fish and chips which were okay.
This time I started with the soup of the day which was Broccoli cheddar, it was okay, not a lot of flavor. I also ordered the Giant Stuffed Clam app, it came out and looked burnt, I still tried it, it was very dry and didn't taste very good. The waitress was nice about it and took it off our bill and offered to get me something else, so I opted to try their Clam Chowder. The clams were tender but the soup didn't have much flavor, but it was edible and I had an empty belly to fill. Doug got the hot dog, nothing special, just a hot dog, which he likes no matter how bad it is. Lol. I'd probably go back for drinks, it seems to have a lively bar, but I'll remember to skip it for food.
I went to Land Ho as the first stop on a Bachelorette party bar crawl. We had so much fun there that we stayed until they closed up! We know bachelorette groups can be a bit obnoxious but the bouncers, bartenders, band and patrons all embraced us completely. Than band even let us take over the microphones and host a dance-off and they listened to our song requests. Our cocktail waitress, Meghan, was absolutely amazing! Not only was she friendly and quick with the drinks, but she even helped us complete our scavenger hunt - convincing other guests to pose for funny pictures with us, buy us shots, give us piggy backs, etc. When we were stranded there at the end of the night, Meghan made sure we made it home. I can't say enough good things about the Land Ho. They made what would have been a rainy bachelorette bar hop one of my most memorable nights!!!
Review Source:Wow, this place (or it's employees) totally discriminates against Asian people. We called ahead and were told dinner is served until 10pm, bar food after. We were excited and celebrating our engagement. We arrived at 9:50pm and the "bouncer" wouldn't let us in without ID even though the rule doesn't begin until 10pm. Then we were told by him and the lady working there sitting outside was no where else to get food except for Chinese Take-out and that we were out of luck.
This happened on 5/26/12 and if the owner would like to know what happened, they should contact me. This should never happen to anyone.
A great spot. We came on our weekend away up to the Cape and it really gave you that feeling of a local bar and restaurant. The food was fantastic and the service was great. The only real drawback is that there aren't a ton of tables, but we were fortunate to have only a 5 minute wait (spent at the bar so no complaints). We ordered the steamers to start and it tasted like they were picked as you ordered them. Two of us had the fish and chips and two had the crab cakes and all was nothing short of fantastic. Definitely a place we'll go back to the next time we're up there.
Review Source:Ho-No! Â I really wanted to like this Orleans hot spot, but after repeat visits, the food is just not that good. Â Top of the list would be the burgers, and those are pretty much average. Â The clam chowder tasted like it came out of a can, and the ribs tasted like they were covered in jarred BBQ sauce you could buy at the supermarket. The bar is fun and always a good stop for a beer, so that gave the Ho another star. Â If you just wanted a beer after the beach, this would be a good spot. Â Otherwise, look elsewhere for good eats
Review Source:I was brought to Land Ho by a year round Brewster resident who said, "This is where the locals go to eat. Everything on the menu is delicious."
I was glad he picked Land Ho for our lunch stop. There is a handwritten specials chalkboard near the bar. One of their specials for the day was a fried haddock sandwich and it was very tasty.
I'd stop by again, but would be prepared for a wait when the tourists are back on the cape. The restaurant was even crowded in early February.
Hubby and I were staying in Orleans for the weekend, sans car. Â We needed something close - we stayed right near Main St. and this was close. Â Food wise it was great.
Was very busy - which is to be expected since it is Friday night. Â The ambiance was very fun and the food was good. Â We only had to wait about 10 minutes - seemed like it was mainly filled with locals eating tat the bar. Â Seemed like a nice place to hang if you lived down there - would see everyone you know.
I had fried calamari - delish, but I wouldn't expect anything less on the Cape. Â Hubby had the special - chili cheese burger. Â He said it was good but not enough chili. Â LOVED the french fries - shoe string! Â YUM!
Pricing was very fair.
My only complaint was our service - our waitress seemed overwhelmed and didn't really seem nice - she didn't even give us her name. Â I'm the type of person that typically doesn't mind not being waited on hand and foot, but this was just bad service. Â Was she overwhelmed by the crowd? Â Maybe, but don't work a busy night then. Â It wouldn't hurt you to smile, to ask if I wanted my water refilled, to ask my husband if he wanted another beer (empty glass for about half the meal!), and to even tell us to have a nice night. Â Definitely not impressed!
This place still deserves 4 starts b/c the atmosphere was fun, the hostess was a sweetheart, and the food was really good. Â Would come here again.
There really wasn't anything thing that I can say I liked about this place.
Service - no issue. Standard service.
Ambiance - casual, if not a dive/hole in the wall for food (I didn't get any drinks).
Food - little flavor, simple presentation, and generally overpriced for what I got ( Salmon special with rice and an unknown and unidentifiable vegetable).
I don't generally like to judge a book by it's cover, but I probably should have here. I was really hoping for some type of awesome seafood being in Orleans, but that just wasn't happening.
Maybe the food might be good after several drinks, at which point I'll probably care less about the food.
A visiting friend wanted to take us out to dinner on a Tuesday night in mid-may... we suggested the 'Ho and she'd never been, so she agreed. Â There was a lively crowd, a few of whom smelled rather strongly of a certain smoked herb. Â
We had a decent dinner... twin filets in a brown peppercorn sauce priced in the low $20s, and fried scallops and clam strips for my visiting friend, which were fine. Â A couple of drinks... and lo and behold the bill somehow crept up to $130 for 3 people before tip... I was actually kind of shocked, and I saw my friend staring at it for a long time, but it was her treat, so i didn't ask to review the slip for errors. I hope it was accurate. I offered to pay the tip but she insisted it was her treat, and then just kept staring at the bill like she wasn't quite sure she was reading it right. Â So I bought the last round of drinks... stingers (brandy and creme de menthe, quite delicious actually). Â
The waitress was OK during the early part of the meal but basically abandoned us towards the end... she definitely could have sold us more drinks and earned more tips if she'd come around more, and displayed any type of upbeat fun personality.
The highlight of the evening was the Tuesday night trivia contest. Â I don't even know what the prize was. Â We ended up with a mid-pack score by sharing answers with the Canadian couple at the adjoining table, despite receiving lots of disapproving stares from an elderly threesome against the wall. Â The winning team of about 8 guys at a round table actually had their own baseball caps embroidered with their team name, so if you want to win, you'd better bring a lot of friends for your team and realize that apparently this is serious stuff in Orleans in the winter.
All in all, we had a lot of laughs, so it was a good choice.. particularly if you can catch the tuesday night trivia contest with friends.
I found this place in the local news on a recent trip to Cape Cod. Â A local hangout, this place was PACKED in the middle of the winter with my favorite people, New Englanders who have lost all ability to pronounce the letter "R". Â They have the normal variety of New England food, meaning lots of fish, grinders, and beeah (yes that's a word. Â I think).
I started with the kale soup, which was highly recommended and ohmygosh was it good. Â Sausage, beans, veggies, it was fantastic. Â So much in so that I tried to replicate it at home a few nights later. Â But that's another post. Â I had fish and chips for my lunch, which were quite tasty, and though most fried fish tends to taste the same, I could tell this fish was extremely fresh. Â It tasted like fish, not batter. Â Emily had fried clams, which were great, and her mom had a really nice pastrami sandwich. Â Her dad had flounder which was just alright, but the soup we all had more than made up for it.
My 2 stars are solely for the bartender, his service and the hostess of the restaurant. Â
Our waitress was HORRIBLE, all caps. Â She took our order, forgot our water. Â Brought our food, never checked in on us. Â
REPEAT.. NEVER checked in on us. Â Also, never brought us our check. Â And didn't check in on us. Â EVER. Â The hostess did. Â WHAAAAT. Â
Now, we didn't have a scowl on our faces, we were super excited.. and as a former waitress, I always tip 20-30%.. so I was HORRIFIED at this service. Â
I went there on a Tuesday night in August a couple of weeks ago for dinner. Â We were sat within 10 minutes, grabbed a drink at the bar and chatted with some locals. Â I was SO excited, as I was only on the Cape for the night, and I LOVE THE CAPE! Â They had a great menu + specials board... Come on, clam chowder, lobstaahhh, steamers..
Sigh.
The clam chowder was watery and warm.
Sigh.
The steamers were warm at best, and extra sandy. (I'm not a sand prude, but these were SO sandy.)
Sigh.
My friend's lobster.. he also said barely warm.
Sigh.
My friend's salmon special, mediocre at best.
Sigh.
What's up with that Land Ho!?
With the good, the hostess was adorable. Â What our waitress didn't do for us, she did. Â She got us the check, checked in on us, etc. Â Always friendly. Â I don't know her name, but she had a slight accent.
And the bartender? Â Friendly. Â Gave me hints/tips of where to go, as I'd never gone this far out on the Cape. Â I got smushed by a local that wanted to just give me a "sexy" hug.. umm, okay.. and the bartender saw my weirded out look on my face, and cut me a deal on the bill because he felt bad. Â
I'd go back for the bar.. but not for the food/waitress.
Holy Awesome. And my date and i cracked the f*ck up reading the menu. "Ho' Made Clam Pie." Oh yeah. The lesbos in the corner ordered that one. Â And the "Ho' Made Crab Cakes" too.
Cute little bar/restaurant, but get there early. By 6:00 on a week day there was not an empty seat in the joint. The food is great. Thanks to yelp we tried the Kale Soup and were extremely pleased. Everything the ho made for us was tasty, fun and nicely priced. She can service us any time.
I lived in Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod for a couple years year-round, and for a couple summers after that. Â And, as anyone who's been there will tell you, that place sticks under your skin. Â
I eventually left because it's a small-ass town and I felt like I had no anonymity and I was hitting a serious glass ceiling financially. Â
But I miss it all the time. Â Cape Cod in the winter is my favorite time to go, and I go every New Year's. Â
And I used to go more after I moved away. Â Because I would think about Provincetown every single day for a long time. Â I still think about it frequently. Â A friend of mine once went kayaking in late winter/early spring and a whale came up right next to her and swam along side of her for a while. Â I have never lived in a more beautiful place. Â
So when I made the horrible decision to move to Northampton, MA, the first time I went back I went with my friend Toni and was dying for a stuffed clam. Â
The drive to Ptown is horrendous. Now, if you're a tourist who comes once a year or something, that's different. Â You get all excited as you get closer and closer and the trees get smaller and more scraggly and dirt turns to sand and you can smell the ocean. Â That's cool. Â
But if you just want to freaking get there, it sucks. Â The highway sucks and then that one-lane 30-mile-an-hour nonsense that happens towards the end of the trip.
Also, Provincetown is really expensive. Â Really REALLY expensive. Â SO the best thing to do if you're dying for some seafood like a stuffed clam and you've driven several hours is to stop at Land Ho. Â It is the most reasonably priced food for the area, and right off the Orleans rotary and has great food and drink.
And that, my friends, is how start your winter vacation in Cape Cod.
Best. Fried. Clams. Ever.
Went to the Cape during the April "heat wave" to kick off the summer and found ourselves looking for a seafood joint around town. The seafood is definitely fresh, the vibe is very cape-y (for some odd reason you really feel like you're on the water) and, lets be honest, nothing beats the first sip of a Sam Adams Summer draft.
Next time I head to the cape, I'll be Land Ho!
My rugby team was looking for a nice place to have team dinner while out on the Cape for a rugby tournament in Eastham and yelp led me to Da' Ho. Our party of 10 plus a baby was seated immediately on a Friday night. Our server left us a pitcher of water to make sure we stayed hydrated.
The food was pretty good, however out of the 10 meals, my teammate that chose the clams got a bad batch. She got lots of sand in some bites and was sick later that evening, along with another teammate who had eaten 4 of her clams.
The staff was gracious, tolerating our skit practice which involved singing an altered rendition of "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls. The locals were kind as well. My food was pretty tasty, had a fish dish.
Land Ho! Â is another Orleans institution -- it has been here for years, with the same basic menu and rustic dining room crowded with wooden signs and snappy license plates. Â The food is very pared-down --chowder, seafood and humble burgers & sandwiches rule here -- but deliciously prepared, and the service is good as well. Â There is a bar area in the back, complete with a jukebox, which is great because the waits here are legendary.
My family has been coming here for years, and it's always an enjoyable experience, whether on a bustling evening in high summer or on a frozen February afternoon.
Really the only thing wrong with this place is that it is ALWAYS crowded. Â I'm sure that's a good sign for business, but sometimes that's a pain. Â Especially during the summer when it's filled with annoying-kid-toting soccer-mom tourists.
In general though, the food is very good, and if you manage to hang out with the locals, a great place to watch a Sox game.
This is an Orleans staple and always a guaranteed good time, be it at the crux of summer time or any old time throughout the year. Â The family that owns and runs this local joint are darling and always looking after you to make sure you are enjoying their establishment. Â The other servers are equally as kind and as laid back as you find them on the Cape.
The decor is fun with local business sign-age hanging from the ceiling and funny license plates/bumper stickers/etc on the walls.
There is always great live music on the weekends, that provides for a good atmosphere and a chance for you to put on your dancing shoes.
The drinks are more than generous and surely take you to your happy place; reasonable to boot. Â The food is good; especially their "Stuffies," Reuben, Kale soup and seafood specials.
There is a reason the "Ho" is always a happening spot, as it aims to please with great drinks, good food and great people.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can visit the other "Ho" in Costa Rica.
