Stopped in here on the way home from backpacking and gave it a try.  Wonderful place.  Very earthy, authentic "home cooking" style Mexican dining.  What is lacking in atmosphere is wonderfully made up for in the warm, friendly cooks, their obvious skill in what they do, turning out an impressive array of fantastic dishes.  I decided to be up for the challenge of ordering a ceviche tostada in landlocked Central Washington and the tostada was heaped with briny, fresh shrimp and an assertive, complex mix of ingredients.  At $4, a steal.  Equally delicious, (but not as cheap) was something I had never had before, a chiles rellenos soup.  Hearty with a nice medium heat.  Truly Mom's home cooking.  Highly recommend stopping in here, especially if you don't freak out over a place that significantly makes up for any lack of ambience with authentic, rustic excellence.

We rolled down to Toppenish at the recommendation of a friend to try Las Palomas (formerly La Petunia), and knew good things were in store when we were greeted by a chihuahua yapping at us in Spanish.

At least I think it was Spanish.  I speak a little Spanish, but the canine accent made it hard to be sure.

Anyway, Las Palomas is a hybrid lunch counter/taqueria/convenience store.  It's not entirely clear if you order at the counter or sit down, but you can apparently do either.  When we arrived around 11:30 we were the only group, but by noon the place was packed with patrons enjoying some hearty relatively authentic Mexican fare.

It's a little on the pricy side for what I was expecting (prices aren't listed anywhere), but the plates were loaded up with more food than you should finish in one sitting.  We split the coctel de camarones to start, and each had a different entree.  At my friend's insistence I went with the mole de pollo, which was two large and tender pieces of on-the-bone chicken in a soupy sauce that must be a mole from part of Mexico I haven't been to.  It was clearly homemade, but lacked the robust earthiness I usually associate with mole.  However, it was still fresh and flavorful with a nice spice character that was better suited to the beans and rice.

Finish it all off with their self-serve housemade salsa picante in a big molcajete, a cold Jarritos or Negra Modelo, and a pack of cacahuates japones for the road, and you'll be good to go.

Las Palomas probably isn't the best Mexican food in the Yakima valley, and it certainly isn't the cheapest.  But for a low key, satisfying lunch, I bet it will do the trick for you.

This restaurant is really like no other. It features home style Mexican food.  Homemade tortillas are served with menu items. A variety of sauces are provided with the meals. I wish it was less than an hour away from the tri-cities. The atmosphere is shabby at best. The food is literally awesome. Specials are also available. Only open for breakfast and lunch. Beer is available with meals. A must try for someone who enjoys the real thing.
